LIBRARIES TODAY: Gwen Vanderhage
FICTION
I am so excited about this fall issue of Little One. We have a fantastic array of author interviews, from Sara Pennypacker to Gail Jarrow. Time and care are taken in choosing categories and titles that are fresh, new and interesting. This issue contains a wonderful list of fiction and nonfiction titles to take little ones through the fall with fun and educational books to read. You will find nonfiction titles for early and middle readers, along with a separate section of tween and teen titles with a variety of themes. These books build curiosity and creativity, increasing cognitive and emotional aptitude. I do hope you find something new, different, and surprising to share with your young readers. Large, medium, and small publishers are represented. The titles in these updated lists are curated by our experienced Collection Development librarians.

Featuring Social Emotional Learning in the Library Children’s books have always served as both entertainment and education, whether characters are transported to a joust during King Arthur’s rule, exploring the Arctic, or experiencing the unique solutions offered by Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, there are sprinkles of history, science, and social skills throughout. Picture books for the youngest have especially focused on making friends, sharing, and gaining mastery over emotions. Over the last several years, school districts in 29 states have adopted Social Emotional Learning standards as part of their curriculum. As my son’s first grade teacher said, “I’m focused on teaching kindness.” Authors and publishers are rising to demand, with more books than ever that focus on these topics.
by Gwen Vanderhage —
Social Emotional Learning, or SEL, has become a buzz-term; what exactly does it include? SEL equips children to: • Manage emotions • Collaborate with others • Communicate effectively • Make responsible decisions
Gwen has worked with
Librarians can support community efforts to help kids with these skills by featuring titles around emotions, growth mindset, and inclusion in displays and book lists.
Collection Development Librarian, Brodart Co.
books for children and teens for 17 years. She has worked in libraries from Virginia to Colorado and even served on the 2019 Caldecott Award committee. She joined Brodart to share her passion for children’s literature with as many different libraries
As the 2021 school year opens to continued stressors caused by the ups and downs of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers and parents will be looking for resources to help kids revive dormant social skills and deal with anxiety, grieving, and life changes. Understanding and coping with the current social upheaval in our country also falls within the SEL framework. Encourage staff to face-out attractive titles that focus on diverse experiences from around the world and around the neighborhood. These include not just racial or religious diversity, but also poverty, neurodivergence, and different kinds of families. Those of us who love and use children’s literature in our work are so fortunate that books continue to entertain and educate no matter our circumstances.

AUTHOR Q & A
Tell Me
More
An interview with Sara Pennypacker Author of Pax, Journey Home
Q. What made you want to return to the world of Pax and Peter? A. Well, I actually never left it. You see, usually, when I finish a book, I miss the characters, but it’s clear what happens to them after that final page so I don’t keep wondering. But I’d deliberately left the ending to Pax a bit open-ended, so I kept imagining different futures for them all. A year or so after the release, I shared my favorite with my agent – in so much depth that we both realized I had another book. I was so happy to return to Peter and Pax’s worlds, especially Pax’s. It’s a real privilege to write from a fox’s point of view.
from your normal writing, or different from Pax’s perspective in the first book? A. I’m so glad you noticed that – having a main character experience parenthood was one of the most interesting aspects of writing the sequel. I know that most of my readers won’t be in that place themselves, so what I hope they take from it is an insight to how their own parents might feel about them. That feeling of loving your children so much you realize you’d do anything for them, even if it meant a terrible loss for yourself. Also, I felt it rounded out Pax’s re-entry to the wild.
Q. In Pax, Journey Home, you write from a perspective not usually in children’s books, that of a parent. How was that experience different
Q. As with Pax, a strong theme in Pax, Journey Home is spotlighting injustice. How did you want to frame this for your audience? A. In Pax, I tried hard to avoid an overt anti-war stand (it’s not an author’s place to proselytize) but instead to simply explore the question What are the costs of war? and ask readers to answer it for themselves. In the sequel, I explored some possible responses to having suffered injustice. Peter has lost his home, his pet, and now his father to a war he never had a chance to weigh in on. His first response is to close himself off, so he’ll never be vulnerable again. Other characters have had losses, too, but they’ve chosen different responses. After encountering them journeying home, Peter ultimately decides to try something braver. Another aspect
is shown in the Water Warriors – I wanted to look at ways that an organization previously involved in destruction could be repurposed to healing.
“In the sequel, I explored some possible responses to having suffered injustice.” Q. Jon Klassen has once again lent his stunning artwork to bring the world of Pax and Peter to life. What is your favorite part of Jon’s depictions of your characters? A. Where do I start? His drawings are gorgeous and evocative of course, but what I love most is the respect he shows for the foxes. Pax and his kit are drawn with a dignity that mirrors how I came to feel about them: the more I researched red foxes the more I admired them and wanted to be respectful in telling their stories. That final illustration is my favorite… just, wow. Q. Do you feel like this is the end of Peter and Pax’s story, or at least what readers will get to discover? A. It is definitely the end! All the characters are now set firmly on their paths, and we can trust they are going to end up living their best lives.

PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT
Read Woke™ Books Lerner Publishing Group is excited to introduce Read Woke™ Books, created in partnership with Cicely Lewis, the Read Woke librarian. Inspired by a belief that knowledge is power, Read Woke Books help readers challenge their perspectives and motivate them to make a difference.
Cicely Lewis —
Librarian & Creator of Read Woke™ Books
Cicely, what is a Read Woke book? I started Read Woke in 2017 for my high school students. Our school is 80 percent Latinx. My students wanted to do something about the things they were seeing on the news, but they didn’t know how to organize or have the information they needed. I wanted to channel their social activism by getting them to read and talk about books, so I started the Read Woke reading challenge. B R O D A R T L I T T L E O N E C ATA L O G
A Read Woke book challenges the social norm, gives voice to the silenced, provides information about groups that have been disenfranchised, disrupts the status quo, and shares perspectives from underrepresented or oppressed groups. I use [these standards] in my curation, and even in my programming, because it’s important to not just have these books, but to make sure your program is reflective of the standards as well.
Your reading program led to the opportunity to develop books with Lerner. The first set—Issues in Action—addresses heavy issues like gun violence, mass incarceration, and immigration. What inspired you to tackle these topics for kids in grades 4-8? These topics do seem heavy, but kids are watching all of this on the news—they're hearing information that may or may not be correct. They have family members that may not be documented. They've lived through things we have no idea about. I feel the best way to [help] them is through knowledge with facts and statistics and data. The only way to combat racism, sexism, homophobia, all of that—is through education. That’s why I wanted [a broad] age range. Read Woke is rated “E” for everyone. These young readers are going to be leading our country one day. Having them know about legislation and how it affects people of color and disenfranchised groups is so relevant. My hope is that these books can get our kids energized, mobilized, and ready to take action in their
communities, making change and “good trouble,” as John Lewis said.
Tell us about some of the book features. Another six-book series is coming in January 2022, American Slavery and the Fight for Freedom. So much information has been left out of history books. We hear about Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks—and that's it. This series introduces students to other amazing people who have led the fight for our freedom.
Cicely Lewis is a school librarian with a passion for creating lovers of reading. She was named the 2020 National Librarian of the Year by School Library Journal and Scholastic. In 2017, she started the Read Woke challenge in response to the shootings of young unarmed black people, the repeal of DACA, and the lack of diversity in young adult literature.

AUTHOR Q & A
Tell Me
More An interview with Laurenne Sala Author of Mi Casa Is My Home
Q. When did you know you wanted to write a book? A. I have been writing books since 4th grade! My first book back then was about what the world would be like in 2010. I guessed flying cars. After writing a memoir at 28 before I had a good ending and a novel about online dating, I finally found picture books and realized that kids make the best audience. Q. What is the inspiration for this story? A. When my mom put my childhood home on the market, I went through a surprising amount of grief! I realized I was saying goodbye to a really old friend who knew me so well and watched me grow up. I began to think of houses as truly special places.
“This book is a love letter to my home and family.” Q. Is there a specific message you want to share? A. This book is a love letter to my home and family. And it’s written in Spanglish, my imperfect blend of two languages. I want to share the love and appreciation for mundane things as a way to always feel gratitude in your heart. Just like in the book, you can always look around and find something you love, even if you’re somewhere you hate. And focusing on those things make life so much better.
I also want to share that it’s ok to speak any language even if it doesn’t come out perfectly. I spent years being embarrassed of my imperfect Spanish until finally I realized I was cutting out a whole population I could potentially speak to. Once I got over my intimidation, life got so much brighter.
coziest part of her home is her family. Family you can take anywhere, so in the end... the sweet feeling of home can be wherever you are.
Q. How do you select the names of your characters? A. Most of my characters are named after someone I know and love as a way to say hi or honor them as long as the book is in print. Q. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process? A. The most difficult part of any writing for me is continuing on after I get stuck. It’s so much easier to say, “This isn’t working. Just forget it.” But books don’t get made that way. Q. Have you always wanted to be a writer? A. Yes! My mom was such a good storyteller, so I grew up loving stories. And after that first book in 4th grade, I knew writing was my calling. I’ve been writing for my whole life... from commercials to billboards to essays to now Mi Casa Is My Home, my fourth published picture book. Q. What is your favorite part of this book? A. My favorite part of Mi Casa Is My Home is the very last page when (spoiler alert!) Lucía realizes that the

AUTHOR Q & A
Tell Me
More An interview with Amal Author and illustrator of My Key
Q. What is the inspiration for this story? A. Baltimore libraries. I think there are about twenty in the area which means you’re never far from one. But one summer I wasn’t anywhere close to Baltimore. Keep in mind, I was no bookworm, just liked wandering around the buildings themselves and finding pictures in various books. That summer, multiple days of boredom set in hard and the word maybe translated into a sound that made me wince.
One afternoon a neighbor moved out of the building and piled picture books, hardbacks, paperbacks, magazines, you name it, in the mass outside her door. I assumed this meant she didn’t want them, so I collected the lot, created my own library, and started comparing book
covers—because covers count. Instantly, the world turned into a more interesting place. Instantly, with my whole heart, I fell in love my local home libraries. Q. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process? A. Finding models (and praying they don’t have a growth spurt before we finish). Once the text is near completion I begin to storyboard and work out thumbnails, but I often work from models and the searching for one and getting things coordinated part gets pretty tricky. I’m extremely fortunate to have met the little girl who acted the role of the character in My Key. She had her own ideas about how this kid went about using found objects to build herself a key! Q. What is the most satisfying part of your artistic process? A. When I’ve found the model! Not kidding. By that point the storyboard is complete, so are the thumbnail sketches, and often I’ve already decided which to use. BUT I won’t go beyond this point because magic can happen when someone other than the creator interprets a story. I can easily rebuild my initial sketch for any new interpretation then return to the drawing part, which happens to be on total par with my above favorite part, because I love the feel and look of pencil on canvas before getting into any painting.
Q. When did you start writing/ illustrating? A. In elementary school I think we were taken twice a week or so to the school library where Mrs. Hopkins became narrator to whatever books we put in her lap. She’d read until she couldn’t read anymore. But we weren’t allowed to leave her library until our teacher returned, so she let us loose. I was attracted to nicely bound books, my favorite was the Encyclopedia Britannica, but I hadn’t a clue what was on the pages other than a lot of words that seemed to be screaming out for pictures... Q. What is your favorite part of this book? A. When the main character goes about building herself a key out of the stuff she’s found. It’s something we used to do all the time and could pick our way into almost any locked door.
Amal is the 2020 Winner of Clavis Publishing's Key Colors Competition with My Key. A graduate of the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, she currently resides in Port Jefferson, NY.

PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT
Orca Book Publishers Founded in 1984, Orca Book Publishers is an independently owned Canadian children’s book publisher of award-winning, bestselling books in a number of genres. Orca strives to produce books that illuminate the experiences of people of all ethnicities. With 1,000 titles in print.
Kirstie Hudson — Nonfiction Editor at Orca Book Publishers
What kinds of nonfiction do you edit? Right now, I'm acquiring titles for several middle-grade nonfiction series. Orca Footprints focuses on environmental and social justice topics such as overpopulation, deforestation, invasive species, and fair trade. Orca Wild is about profiling keystone species including orcas, sea otters, salmon, and beavers. Orca Think is a new series that looks at issues making headlines around the world, with the goal of giving B R O D A R T L I T T L E O N E C ATA L O G
kids the tools to think critically about topics such as homelessness, animal welfare, and the right to a healthy environment.
What is the benefit of having these books in series? Reviewers and librarians tell us that Orca is known for the quality of its nonfiction research and design, and we look for authors who are passionate experts on the topics they write about. That means when you see nonfiction under the Orca series name, you know the quality of the material is high. Having the books in a series also enables librarians to include them on their automatic release purchases.
What have you learned along the way? I learn something new with every nonfiction title I edit––that's what makes this job so exciting. The longest beaver dam in the world is 2,790 feet (850 meters) long––about the length of 30 NBA basketball courts laid end to end! I also discovered that humans use the equivalent resources of 1.7 Earths every year. There are connections to be made between any topic and the state of our world today––anything from climate change to activism to biodiversity to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ rights.
Favorite moment? There are so many! I have a lot of conversations that start with “we should do a book for kids on…” food waste, activists, light pollution, voting, invasive species, or why humans have fun. It's exciting when a kernel of an idea turns into a fully realized book. And yes, all of
those topics will be Orca books in the future! We also get to connect with people you might not expect. For an Orca Wild book on sea otters, the author reached out to the actress Dame Judi Dench for the foreword and she said yes. It turns out she's a passionate advocate for the animals.
What attracted you to editing nonfiction specifically? I had an almost twenty-year career in journalism before coming to Orca. I've always loved uncovering a great story, so editing nonfiction feels like a natural fit for me. Only now I'm able to find those stories and think about how different topics can engage young readers to be active and compassionate citizens in their communities. What a privilege!

AUTHOR Q & A
Tell Me
More
An interview with Gail Jarrow Author of AMBUSHED!: The Assassination Plot Against President Garfield Q. What is the inspiration for this book? A. My Medical Fiascoes series began with Blood and Germs about Civil War medicine. For the second book, I chose an important event that occurred sixteen years after the War. I decided on this subject when I read an article in an old American Heritage magazine. During the summer of 1881, after only four months as the country’s twentieth president, James Garfield was shot in the back. His subsequent ordeal was a medical fiasco, and it pushed American medicine from the Civil War era into the twentieth century. Garfield’s fate and its influence on our lives today is a forgotten story.
Q. What is your favorite part of this book? A. The turning point of the book is the dramatic attack on Garfield in a Washington train station after he had been stalked by his assassin for
several weeks. To write the scene, I read eyewitness descriptions, newspaper reports, and more than two thousand pages of testimony from the attacker’s trial. My goal was to pull together the accounts and create a true picture of this significant historic event. Ambushed! is a thriller, and the shooting is not the end of the story. Q. Can you explain your research methods? A. As a first step, I read enough to get a broad view of my subject. I also start a running list of questions. These are points that I want to answer for myself, but they’re also questions that I think my audience will have. When I plunge into intense research, I read academic books and journal articles, following footnotes and bibliographies to crucial primary sources and experts. Among my other sources are newspapers and medical journals from the era I’m studying. Depending on the project, I travel to library archives and key locations in the story. As I work, I’m constantly teasing out information that’s accurate from what is not. I usually don’t begin writing until I’ve exhausted my sources and answered the questions on my list. Q. Is there a specific message you want to share? A. A theme of my books about the history of medicine and science is that even the most tragic situations lead to progress and knowledge. This hopeful message has become more
relevant as the world copes with a new disease—one that has profoundly affected the lives of young readers. Q. Have you always wanted to be a writer? A. I’ve been a writer since I was about seven and had the skills to put my thoughts on paper. From then on, I wrote all the time—not for teachers, but for myself. Although I edited and wrote for my school newspapers and literary magazines, I majored in zoology in college instead of English. In fact, I never considered writing as a profession until I was nearly thirty. But while teaching science to students of all ages, I learned more about the books that kids enjoy. I realized that writing was a way for me to reach a larger audience of children and teens. At that point, I began submitting to publishers.
