Monthly Book Boxes

by Tara Montoney —

Youth Services Coordinator Seneca Falls Library

Tara Montoney is the Youth Services Coordinator at the Seneca Falls Library in Seneca Falls, NY. She has been enjoying this position for nearly 10 years and

Here at the Seneca Falls Library, we are extremely proud of the variety of programs we offer to our patrons! Recently, we have had to be more creative and resourceful in order to continue providing meaningful programming to families. One of the new programs we’re offering is our Monthly Book Boxes. We have two types of boxes: a Teen Book Box for kids in middle & high school and a Lazy Day Box for kids in grades 3-5.

absolutely loves reading with children, creating all kinds of engaging programs for kids, and doing whatever she can to develop a lifelong love of books in children!

Each box contains 1-2 library books, pre-packaged snacks, kid-friendly recipes, and a variety of activities (word searches, rebus puzzles, even 3D-printed items). Kids must register each month for a box, and we try to prioritize kids who have not yet received one. When kids are finished, they simply return the empty box, the library books, and a short survey that tells us more about what kinds of books they’d like to read. We also created bookmarks that we put in each book that have a QR code so the kids/parents can easily scan in a book review!

26 AUTHOR Q & A

Tell Me

More An interview with

Laura Amy Schlitz author of Amber & Clay

Q. What is your writing process like? A. I write first drafts with a fountain pen, and transfer each chapter to the computer. I’m a bricklayer writer. I rework chapter one for days before I start chapter two. I usually write in bound books with good quality paper, and I write sequentially—unless I’m writing a play. When I write plays, I write the scenes out of order, and cobble them together like patchwork. “I went to Greece. I tried making clay pots; I talked to a bear trainer. This book took four years to write and I never stopped researching.” Amber & Clay was more like a play than a novel. My rough drafts refused to stay in a bound book, and ended up in scrap notebooks and on loose sheets of paper. It was very messy. I wrote scenes out of order and threw them out. I changed points of view and alternated between verse and prose. Q. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book? A. This book was research-heavy. I reread Plato and Euripides and Sophocles and Homer and Aeschylus and Aristophanes and Greek verse. I went to museums; I went to Greece. I tried making clay pots; I talked to B R O A D A R T L I T T L E O N E C ATA L O G

a bear trainer. This book took four years to write and I never stopped researching. Q. Is there a specific message you want to share? A. No. I like ambiguity. Books with specific messages remind me of the Trojan horse; there’s that fabulous horse (the Story) with the treacherous army inside (the Message.) I like stories like A Midsummer Night’s Dream or The Odyssey: books in which you fall under the author’s spell and can’t pinpoint a specific message. Q. How long have you been writing? A. I remember dictating a poem to my mother before I knew my letters. So I’ve been writing for sixty years. Q. Did you always want to be a writer? A. No. I wanted to be Sarah Bernhardt. Q. What is your favorite part of this book? A. I loved writing about the bear; that was luscious. But my favorite part of the book was the end. I knew my two main characters would meet at last. I trusted that their meeting would be the heart of the matter, and would draw the story together. But I didn’t know what my characters

would say. I didn’t dare think about it. I put off thinking about it. It gave me a sense of almost physical vertigo, because I was putting all this work into a book that had an empty hole at the end. When the day came to write the ending, my stomach was all knotted up. I set my writing pad on my knees, and moved my fountain pen over the page. The ink flowed out of my pen, scrawling all the wrong words. But that bad draft was all I had, so I worked to make it slightly less terrible, and one by one I exchanged the wrong words for slightly better ones. At some point, the ending took shape, and I liked it. I'm still not sure that ending is mine, but I like it the way I like stories that were written by someone else.

W ELCOME TO THE WORLD OF

GRAPHIC NOVELS:

GUEST CONTRIBUTOR

How did we get here?

Though it may seem as if graphic novels are suddenly everywhere, this moment has already been decades in the making. Almost all the growth for this format is thanks to librarians who

BY JOHN SHABLESKI

understand that graphic novels, along with manga (Japanese comics), bring readers into the library and drive circulation. But before we get too far down the path, here’s some clarification on the use of the word ‘comics.’ You may hear comics incorrectly described as a genre. Comics, like music, is a medium. Graphic novels, comic books, and Sunday funnies are used to describe bindings or formats. And as you have with prose books, there are just as many genres to read.

—---—---—---——---—---—---——---—---—-----——-------------—----–––––––--— a very brief history of graphic novels in libraries …and now, schools. When the American Library Association’s YALSA librarians launched the Graphic Novel Task Force in 2004, the conversation about comic books and graphic novels in public libraries had already been underway for at least a decade prior. In 2007, the YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens group released their first annual list of recommended titles. This list was immediately considered by the publishing world as an award vs. a simple recommendation.

Graphic novels bring new readers into the library! IIn the mid-2000s, the conversation shifted from defending graphic novels as a new form of literature to ‘These things put our circulation into turbo-mode!’ This showed publishing houses that a new kind of reader was growing with middle grade or younger teens. These developments also encouraged librarians to create special collection displays, which created an additional boost to circulation.

With the arrival of books like Bone, Babymouse, American Born Chinese, Smile, Naruto, and even Wimpy Kid*, librarians were seeing new faces coming through the doors. Furthermore, these are books that kids were asking for, begging for, demanding. Not far behind these famous books would be series like Big Nate, Geronimo Stilton, and Captain Underpants . . . and now, Dog Man. As more graphic novels made their way into the public library space, another invasion began in another place: schools. More specifically, in the middle school world. As students clamored for the likes of Naruto, Avatar, Dog Man, Smile, and Guts, teachers and librarians soon realized these very books were allowing kids to LOVE reading!

Allowing yourself to love digital… For many of us, there’s nothing quite like the smell and feel of a brandnew book, or even an old, dog-eared copy of a title we love. It is a very tactile experience that we relish. Having that emotional bond to the

hard copy version can make it difficult to accept a new reading format. I will freely admit that I am a reluctant reader of any book on a device, but I also realize that digital brings a new kind of freedom to reluctant and challenged readers. While graphic novels can foster incredible levels of engagement, digital platforms and devices allow that struggling reader—be they a middle school kid or an adult with reading challenges—the opportunity to conceal from others, books that help establish confidence in their own reading abilities. On a digital device, that struggling reader has a new sense of freedom. Freedom to read any book they wish, any book that brings them joy, and any book that helps them find the kind of confidence that will encourage them to read more books. Once they have that confidence, this newfound joy for reading leads to even greater joys in learning. So, with that, we welcome you to an incredible world of graphic novels!

—---—---—---——---—---—---——---—---—-----— *Diary of a Wimpy Kid was initially and mistakenly catalogued as a graphic novel, which actually created an awareness of buyers for the graphic novel category.

John Shableski is a founding member and current president of Reading With Pictures, a global literacy nonprofit organization that promotes the use of comics, animation and gaming to foster a joy of learning.
