PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT
Second Story Press
Second Story Press is dedicated to publishing feminist-inspired books for adults and young readers.
Margie Wolfe — Publisher
What sets Second Story Press books apart on the shelf? I believe there is a consistent vision to our books where human rights, social justice, girls and women, and diversity are key. I also like to think there is bravery in the content, such as explorations focusing on same-sex marriage, family abuse, girl power, euthanasia, intolerance, and hate. We were one of the early publishers doing actively anti-racist and non-sexist books for kids.
Has Second Story’s mission changed over the 30+ years that you’ve been publishing books? Our mission has not really changed but has been enhanced. We have always brought a feminist perspective to our publishing, with
an understanding that our mandate is to reflect the diversity of people and experiences in our communities. Over the years, we have explored issues including the Holocaust, homelessness, and ableism, and the experiences of women, immigrants and refugees, Indigenous people, and people of color.
What inspires you to continue publishing feminist and diverse stories? In recent years, people have commented how “on trend” we are. The comment makes me realize why we need to continue with our vision. We have never really followed trends. The kind of books we do now very much reflects a pattern begun decades ago. I know some publishers want to follow current trends. That suggests to me they will turn away from the social justice and diverse titles in demand today to publish the next trend. Second Story will stay the course as we always have done.
What makes Second Story books an asset in libraries and classrooms? Sometimes sad, difficult, or controversial, but inspiring and full of hope, our books reflect the diverse realities of children’s lives today and in the past. There are no bunny rabbits, rather there is compelling storytelling
crafted with memorable content.
What has been your favorite or most rewarding experience as a publisher? For many years our kind of publishing was not regarded as appropriate for children. The books were considered “worthwhile” but didn’t have the “magic” of the classics. One of my most rewarding experiences was when, more than twenty years ago, we started the Holocaust Remembrance Series for Young Readers and the books began winning children’s choice awards. Hana’s Suitcase became the most-awarded children’s book in Canada, and was published in more than 40 languages worldwide. I believe it helped transform what “experts” considered appropriate and magical reading for children.
Margie Wolfe has been publishing women-focused, social justice, and human rights books for adults and young people since 1977, first at Women’s Press, and now at Second Story which she co-founded with several women including Carolyn Wood in 1988.
