Red Comet Press
PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT
After three decades in children’s publishing, Angus Yuen-Killick has realized a dream with the debut of a new publishing house—Red Comet Press. Eager to learn more about his vision, we asked him five insightful questions about the new boutique press.
Angus YuenKillick — Publisher
Was there an “aha” moment in your decision to launch your own imprint after years of publishing experiences? This is something I’ve secretly dreamed of for a while. The lockdown gave me the time to seriously consider it and I literally woke up one day and realized it was time to make a move.
B R O D A R T L I T E L I T T L E O N E C ATA L O G
Why will librarians want to support and buy Red Comet Press books? Red Comet Press books are the type of storytelling that is important to me, and I think to librarians. These books are great read-alouds. Having read to my children every night for years, it’s something I’m very passionate about. I love that I’m adding new voices to the canon. The Secret of the Magic Pearl is an adventure infused with Italian flavor and transports you to an enchanting coastal village. It’s illustrated by a Texas Bluebonnet Award winner and written by an author being published in the U.S. for the first time. The Kirkus starred review called it, “Beautiful, remarkable, amazing, and wonderful in every way.”
Is there a specific message or vision your books will convey? The storytelling is multi-layered. Cat and Dog has a narrative that is communicated through masterful interplay between art and words. All of the books are extremely accessible. Before We Sleep imparts a message of friendship and comfort that feels so necessary in these times. And having stories that are inclusive and speak about
community and diversity are themes that mean a lot to me. In Mister Fairy we meet an endearing protagonist, searching for his place in the world. Kirkus called this one “A delightful, lighthearted tale of self-discovery.” And Robin Robin, a classic picturebook retelling of the forthcoming Netflix animated special, has all the markings of a new holiday classic— charming illustrations, loveable characters, suspenseful story—all while considering what it means to be a family.
What is the backstory or inspiration behind the Red Comet Press name? Naming a new company is really hard. Every name you can think of is taken. We loved that Red Comet felt modern and classic, literary and fun. But best of all, it communicates the awe one feels when seeing a comet crossing the sky. What better image to conjure up for a new children’s publishing venture?
What has been your favorite or most rewarding experience so far? The immense amount of support I have felt from the community. Everyone has been so enthusiastic and encouraging. It has been a very validating and gratifying experience.

AUTHOR Q & A
More Tell Me
An interview with Jerry Spinelli Author of Dead Wednesday
Q. What is the inspiration for this story? A. A letter received from a teacher years ago, telling me about “Dead Wednesday” at her school. I always remembered it and finally decided it was time to act. I looked for the letter--I know I kept it--and could not, cannot find it. So all I was left with was the title and a general gist. I took it from there. As I say in my thank-you’s, my only regret is that I cannot thank by name the generous and caring teacher who gave me the idea. Q. Is there a specific message you want to share? A. Yes! See opening quote from Emily Dickinson: “That it will never come again Is what makes life so sweet.” Q. How do you select the names of your characters? A. Interesting. This is an often-asked question, and I still
don’t have a satisfying answer. It’s a matter of fit, of feel. I have a sense of a character and then shop for a name that seems to fit. Examples are probably the best way to answer. See the Harry Potter books and Star Wars films and Dickens novels. Q. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process? A. Wow, good question. I should start by saying beginnings are the easiest part (for me); they’re a dime a dozen. But hardest? If I were copping out, I’d say “depends on the day.” Every new day, in at least some small way, it’s a new writer who sits down at the keyboard. But, to answer...I’ll say it’s what Eve Bunting calls the “miserable middles.” The excitement of the launch has worn off, you know how you want it to end, but you need to get from here to there, and not only get there but get there as dramatically and interestingly and page-turningly as possible. Q. When did you start writing? A. Age 16. Wrote a poem about a
football game and dramatic goalline stand; it was published in the local newspaper. A quarter-century later came my first published novel, Space Station Seventh Grade. Before that I wrote four novels that nobody wanted--rightfully so, they weren’t very good. Q. What is your favorite part of this book? A. The end.
Jerry Spinelli is the author of many beloved novels for young readers, including Stargirl; Love, Stargirl; Milkweed; The Warden’s Daughter; Crash; Wringer; and Maniac Magee, winner of the Newbery Medal; along with Knots in My Yo-Yo String, the autobiography of his childhood. AUTHOR Q & A
More Tell Me
An interview with Andrea Wang Author of The Many Meanings of Meilan Q. What is the inspiration for writing The Many Meanings of Meilan? A. For a long time, I had been thinking about writing a story that incorporated the existence of homophones in Mandarin. When I thought about writing a coming-ofage story about a girl who begins to wrestle with her identity as a Chinese American, I immediately wanted her to have a name that could have different meanings, and that those meanings could affect how she sees herself and how she behaves in different settings. Q. What is your favorite part of this book? A. There are so many things that I love that I put into this book, but I’d have to say that my favorite is the enormous “dragon tree” in the backyard of Meilan’s neighbor and new friend, Logan. She conjures up a tree spirit who lives in the tree and gives her advice. I’ve always loved trees and stories about dryads, so to include those elements as a symbol of Meilan’s magical thinking made me really happy.
Q. Is there a specific message you want to share with readers of The Many Meanings of Meilan? A. To be proud of their cultural heritage and identity, and to embrace all the different versions of themselves rather than trying to be who others want them to be. Q. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book? A. I probably spend too much time researching – there isn’t a rabbit hole that I don’t want to go down. For The Many Meanings of Meilan, I began the book before doing any research – at that point, I was writing based on my own lived experience. When I decided that one of Meilan’s name meanings would be “Basket” to reflect how she carries her parents’ hopes and dreams, I read articles and books on filial piety and Chinese philosophy. Only a fraction of that made it into the book. Q. What is your writing process like? A. My process has been different for each book, depending on whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, a picture
book or a novel. What stays the same is that I have a different notebook for each project, where I take notes on research topics, make lists of characters, draw timelines, and maybe do some freewriting or mind maps. Q. When did you know you wanted to write a book? A. A few years ago, I found a homemade book I wrote and illustrated when I was a child. In the back, I had written my first author bio, which said in part, “She wrote this book when she was nine-anda-half years old. She wants to be a writer when she grows up.” I can say with some confidence that I knew I wanted to write a book since I was nine-and-a-half!
Andrea Wang’s work explores culture, creative thinking, and identity. She is also the author of seven nonfiction titles for the library and school market. Andrea holds an M.S. in Environmental Science and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing for Young People.
