PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT
CamCat Publishing CamCat Publishing is an independent publisher of quality genre fiction--print, digital, and audio. Their books regularly receive glowing trade reviews and awards. Sue Arroyo
—
Publisher & CEO, CamCat Publishing Photo by ©Neville Simpson
What will make CamCat stand out from other publishers? From the beginning, we have tried to be an author-centric publishing house. Many on our staff have been on the author-side of the table and understand the frustrations of trying to get published – it’s a tough business! Our relationship with our authors starts with our Submission Questionnaire – we want to know a lot about our authors – and it continues through Editorial and Production. We hold regular town-hall meetings with the authors, to let them connect 4
with each other, to tell them what we as a press have done for them, and for Q&A. Many of our authors have gotten together on their own to crosspromote their books. Is there a specific message or vision your books will convey? We are after an immersive reading experience with what we call Books to Live In, books that invite you to walk in other people’s shoes, that let you live adventures vicariously. Those are the books you read over and over because you can’t get enough of the story and the characters, the books on your shelf that you’ve read so many times the spine is cracked and almost illegible. What is the backstory or inspiration behind the name of your company/ imprint?
The imprints are named after my daughters, Camryn and Cathryn. We had several iterations of the imprint names but kept running into trademark and branding issues. Finally, an editor who knew my kids’ names threw out “CamCat,” we were certain we wouldn’t have branding issues with that! The ladybugs in the CamCat Publishing logo represent Camryn and Cathryn. Do you have a formal acquisition process in place, or are you relying more on emotional reactions to a book you’re considering? We do have a formal acquisition process in place. It starts with an extensive Submission Questionnaire – we don’t only ask about the story, we ask about the author, the author’s perceived audience, and the author’s marketing plans. Then, our Submissions Manager takes the first pass to filter out submissions that just don’t fit CamCat – we frequently get submissions that are outside our age groups and genres. After that, it goes to first-round readers, and if they like it, the story goes to a senior staff reader. All in all, submissions that get to my desk usually have had
3-4 different people reading. At the end of the day, though, the team has to love the book – we’re going to be working with the book and the author for a long time, and so it needs to be enjoyable. What has been your favorite or most-rewarding experience as a publisher so far? Without question, being able to make the call to an author and tell them we want to publish their book has been exceptionally rewarding. The sheer delight expressed by these authors, sometimes after years of trying to get their story published, and being able to share their joy, has been the most gratifying aspect of becoming a publisher. And being able to bring these stories to readers, stories that might otherwise not have seen the light of day, is a fantastic feeling.
Sue Arroyo is the founder of CamCat Publishing. She lives with a “ferocious” guard dog and is tolerated by her grand-cat Gandalf the Gray.
