Ericaʼs Corner
by ERICA SOMMERGreetings, librarians!
I hope you are all enjoying a post-summer reading respite before diving into your library’s fall programming plans. We’re looking forward to seeing this year’s Banned Books Week theme “Let Freedom Read” displayed and promoted in libraries. The above link offers free downloads, and we’ve created a selection list from ALA’s Top Thirteen Most Challenged Books of the Year 2022 that you may find helpful in planning your displays, as well.
We’ve recently been hard at work creating selection lists to help Refresh Your Nonfiction Collection. How do we define a nonfiction refresh? Having met with many of you to discuss your youth nonfiction selection needs, we identified several topics that are often weeded, and are therefore in need of an update in order to maintain a thriving, diverse, and up-to-date nonfiction collection. Topics include:
• Titles from series that are continuously updated, such as U.S. states, world nations, and cultures & traditions
• Biographies focused on current political and social movement leaders, pop music and pop culture stars, sports greats, and other notable humans
• Timely “Issues” titles on the environment, technology, and more
• Celebration and holiday titles about Chinese New Year, Christmas, Autism Awareness Month, and the like
• Graphic Nonfiction, including Graphic Medicine
Erica Sommer is the manager of Brodart's Children’s & Young Adult Programs. She is excited to share her insights in article form as a featured LittleOne contributor. Check our upcoming issues for more from Erica!
• Titles featuring fresh perspectives on a topic, with well-known authors or fulfilling a current thematic need
• Spanish nonfiction offerings that fit any of the above
Find title lists of these fall 2023 nonfiction titles in Bibz under Recommended Lists > Children > Nonfiction/Biography, sorted by BISAC in all but the Biography section, and click through here for the Graphic Novels and Spanish language lists. We hope you’ll find these helpful in making your “freshest” purchasing decisions. Watch for new lists covering spring 2024 later this year.
We’re here to help with your collection-building needs. Find publisher video previews for this fall’s youth fiction and nonfiction titles on our Collection Connection playlist, with selection list links for each presentation available in Bibz in the Children’s > Featured section. Reach out if you’d like follow along with an Excel title list. Keep up-to-date on all that’s new here by following Brodart Youth Services on social, and subscribe to our monthly BookWorm newsletter for fresh staff book reviews, series announcements, lists tied to timely topics and trends, and more. Need programming ideas? Our Resources page has you covered.
As always, I welcome your questions about our youth services offerings. Email BYS@brodart.com to get the conversation started.
Until next issue, happy reading!
