Tell Me

Tomáš Jodas

An interview with Export Manager at Albatros Media

Tomáš Jodas has seven years’ experience in the publishing industry, starting as a rights seller. Today, he manages two editorial teams preparing books for the U.S. market.

Q. Was there an “aha” moment in your decision to launch your distribution in the United States after years of publishing experiences?

A. We historically sold rights of our books to the whole world, with very little sold in the U.S. Nevertheless, it was our dream to have our books published here, so we decided to act on it and set up distribution for them.

We were not certain if the market would accept our titles at first, but the stable growth of our sales has reassured us that we made the right decision. We have also received very positive feedback from our readers on social media, had two titles selected by Junior Library Guild, and received positive reviews, among other rewarding instances.

Q. How do Albatros´ books stand out from other books on the library shelf?

A. With a long tradition of graphic design in our country (the Czech Republic), we never compromise on the visual composition of our books. Our motto is “smart books – smart kids,” which says it all. We offer great educational content hidden in a highly entertaining book

Q. Why will librarians want to support and buy your books?

A. Libraries play an essential role in supporting literacy and education, which is our goal as well. Through our books, children learn about the world around them in a refreshing and engaging way. Whether it’s science, social emotional development, or another theme, we hope librarians will appreciate the innovative approach of our titles as they build or update their collections.

Q. Did you feel there was a gap in the library marketplace before your company launched in the U.S.?

A. Many titles are written as if children are not able to form their own opinions. We consider children to be equal to adults in that they can form their own opinions based on information presented to them. Our titles are therefore more challenging than most, but we believe that young readers will appreciate it.

Q. Has your company’s vision or mission changed over the years? If so, why?

Our publishing house was founded on April 11, 1949, with the mission of helping young people explore new perspectives. Our name, Albatros, is the Czech translation of albatross, the bird that has perhaps the largest wingspan. We wanted to fly as far as possible on the wings of fantasy, and we are quite proud of having kept to this mission and vision throughout the years.
