So how does the catalog work
Q: Was there an “aha” moment in your decision to launch your own company after years of non-publishing experiences?
A: In a way there was an “aha” moment, but it developed over time. I’ve launched several companies in varying industries over the years, but I’ve always dreamed about owning my own publishing company. I’ve been an aspiring author so I know what it feels like: sending out queries, feeling the anxiousness over waiting several months for a decision, if you got one at all. When I was able to finally launch CamCat, I knew exactly what kind of publisher I wanted to be. One that was more accessible and direct, less bureaucratic, and more transparent for our authors—a family approach. I also wanted to put out books that were special, that readers would hold onto and cherish.
Q: Why will librarians want to support and buy your books?
A: CamCat is a woman-owned, awardwinning publisher that is author-centric and all about the reading experience. We publish “books to live in,” ones that we hope readers will return to again and again with the spines worn and well-loved.
Q: As you reflect on CamCat’s fifth anniversary, has your company’s vision or mission changed? If so, why?
A: Our vision hasn’t changed over the past five years. It’s more important than ever to be an author-centric publisher, and being understanding about what it’s like on that side of the table. Our focus continues to be on creating quality products for our readers and listeners.
Q: What do you see in the future for CamCat?
A: I see us still being a go-to publisher for writers where we’re always open for submissions, taking agented and unagented manuscripts. We’ve accomplished so much already in the past five years, including many awards and starred reviews, and we hope to see that continue. We’re very thankful for all the readers, reviewers, and librarians who have championed our books along the way.
I’m always on the lookout for new ways to promote our books (check out our podcast we launched in 2022, CamCat Unwrapped, as an example), so I’m excited to see what the future holds in regard to stories. It has been a dream of mine to expand our list to nonfiction categories like true crime, biography, self-help, and history, so that is our next big goal to achieve.
Q: What has been the most challenging experience in launching your company?
A: Breaking into the publishing world as, one a small press, and two a brand new publisher is a long uphill battle. You’re met with a lot of skepticism and obstacles to jump over, just because you’re new or you’re not one of the big guys. Every day is something different and always a learning experience. I’m eternally grateful for the ones who believed in us from the beginning and for those who continue to cheer us on after each milestone we reach.
