SERVICE cycle for sight
Clara Lockhart, University of Ottawa
On Sunday, June 4th, the annual Cycle for Sight bike ride took place at the Carp Fairgrounds just outside of Ottawa. Members of the University of Ottawa Circle K Club enjoyed cheering on racers, handing out much deserved treats, and helping clean up afterwards. This year, Cycle for Sight Ottawa raised over $45,000 for vision research and to top that off, more donations are still coming in! We are proud to support this inspiring event and look forward to next year.

SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. RUN FOR WOMEN. Ann Pham, University of Toronto
On Saturday, June 10th about one thousand participants came out to either run or walk at the second annual SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. Run for Women event in support of Women’s College Hospital and mental health programs for women. Members of Circle K at the University of Toronto served as pre-race kit pickup attendants, gift bag attendants, and medal distributors to support the hospital, make new connections and have fun. In our roles we provided participants with their race bibs, a gift bag as a token of Shoppers and Women’s College Hospital’s appreciation, and a medal to acknowledge participants’ 5K or 10K race completion.

SERVICE IN THE
SUMMER If you’re active as a club over the summer, try for an event a month, whether it be a social or volunteer event! Overall, keep in contact with your members and help connect them wherever they may be!
Reach out to your local Key Clubs and the Lieutenant Governor for your area! They get summer off, so plan events with them and help promote Circle K as the worthwhile transition from Key Club.
One of the easiest ways to successfully have an interclub (at least 2 members from each club) is to connect with the local Circle K club when you’re back home for the summer!
It’s easier to say hello to Kiwanis clubs when you don’t have school. Introduce yourself, see if you can help with any upcoming events, maybe even ask to attend a meeting to talk about CKI!

Hi! My name is Lyndsay-Marie Talon and I am your 2017-2018 District Governor. I am a third year student at Western University studying International Relations and I am so excited to serve with all of you this year. Our board has a lot in store, so be on the lookout for the many ways that you can get involved. I am here to support you, and your club’s initiatives, so never be afraid to contact me! I am also looking forward to getting to know many of you through online training and information sessions (soon to be announced), and if you have any topics you want us to cover, let me know. Once again, I am so excited to see what we can all accomplish this year. Hello! My name is Jessica Ambat and I am thrilled to introduce myself as Eastern Canada's District Secretary for the 2017-2018 Service Year! I'm currently studying my third year at the University of Ottawa for my Bachelors in Health Sciences. I discovered Circle K during my second year in university and I am so privileged to be involved with an amazing organization. Along with my interests with service, I enjoy traveling, shopping and binge watching Netflix series (especially Grey's Anatomy & Friends). I'm looking forward to an amazing service year with an incredible group of people!
Hi everyone, I am Ivy Leung from Western University and I am serving as your District Treasurer this year. I have been involved in the Kiwanis family since I was in grade 11! I joined CKI solely because of the amazing experience I had with Key Club and all the friends I have met within the organization, who are all great both inside and out. Those in the K-family really showed me what a great leader is: people who are always willing to serve others without asking for anything in return. Through my board experience last year, I was able to meet numerous peers across universities, districts, and subregions, and share insights on improving our club and district’s performance. My CKI experience taught me that I can really make a difference not only by volunteering, but also influencing people around me. Though I am not in Canada this summer (which means no board volunteering unfortunately), I am still volunteering in Hong Kong every weekend and it is a lot of fun! Hello everyone! I hope that you are enjoying the first issue of The Current so far! My name is Christina Moica, and this year, I am serving as your District Editor and Marketing Chair. With so many new ideas and initiatives to explore, I can’t wait to meet you all throughout the year – whether it be at FLC, DCON, or even online! The 2017-2018 service year will provide many opportunities for you and your club to shine and be featured in our district publications and social media accounts. Submissions make us happy – and more importantly – make other college and university students interested in learning more about Circle K!
Hello Eastern Canada Circle K Members, My name is Jordan Dunlop, and this year it is my privilege to serve as your District Club Development Committee Chair. My job as a member of the District Executive Team is to work with developing Circle K Clubs to help them charter, grow stronger, and become part of the Eastern Canada District. If you have any questions about my committee, or have heard about interest in forming a new Circle K Club, please feel free to contact me!

Hello everyone! My name is Clara Lockhart, President of the University of Ottawa CKI club and this year's Membership Education Chair for the Eastern Canada District! The main goal of the Membership Education position is to assist in training both Club Officers and general members. I am also excited to be in charge of planning the Fall Leadership Conference, a fun and engaging Circle K weekend retreat, coming soon in Fall 2017. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to add me on Facebook or send me an email. I look forward to another amazing season with Circle K International! Hey everyone! My name is Ashley Westover and I am currently serving as Co-President of the University of Toronto's Circle K Club. I am also serving as the Kiwanis Family Chair! The committee is focused on improving the bonds and relations between different branches of the Kiwanis family. I am really looking forward to bringing you more events that feature another Kiwanis branches and create long last bonds with these branches. Keep an eye out for upcoming events involving Key Club and Kiwanis this summer! I hope to have the chance to meet all of you and help you strengthen these bonds! If you have any questions, email me! Have a wonderful summer and I hope to see you soon!
Hello ECD Circle K’ers! My name is Jaspreet Sagoo and I have the privilege of serving ECD as the Service Committee Chair for the 2017-2018 year. This year, the Service Committee will focus on establishing a District Service Project, assisting clubs 1-on-1 in service-related troubleshooting, and providing resources to make service projects/interclubs/K-fam relations less daunting. I look forward to working with all of you and hopefully we can make 2017-2018 a successful service year together!
Hello Circle K-ers! My name is William Zhang, and I’m a freshman at McGill University for science. My first year in uni, first year out of my home city, and first year being a little more independent. Hopefully, Circle K will be the one thing that connects me to both old friends and new ones, amidst all of the change that all post-high-school students experience. A little about me: I love reading (basically about anything), playing the piano, running, creating and observing art, bubble tea, Asian food, and hanging out with friends. Feel free to message me on Facebook anytime! Hopefully I’m not too busy chasing down those #doctordreams to chat you back! Key Club was so amazing for me, and I’m ready to serve in Circle K as your DCON Co-Chair!
Hi, my name is Eileen Kim and I am serving as the District Convention Co-Chair for this service year! I have been a member of Key Club throughout all of my high school years and I will be continuing my K-Family journey at McMaster Circle K this fall. Our goal this year is to make sure we have a memorable DCON that is convenient for everyone to attend! Hope to see you all in January, stay excited!

FELLOWSHIP LASER QUEST SOCIAL
Nanxi Huang, Western University
Interactive socials are always a great idea, and hosting such an event to wrap up a great school year for Circle K members was particularly exhilarating. This April, members of Western Circle K gathered in downtown London for two competitive hours at Laser Quest. After each round, members walked out of the maze sweaty, exhausted, and left feeling victimized by the proficient tactics of Christina Moica. The group was composed of executives, new members, and friends that have just recently informed of what Circle K International was all about. This wonderful bonding experience ended with warm embraces and farewells as each student departed to prepare for their final exams. No matter how big or small, find a way to let your CKI members and colleagues know that their efforts are appreciated!
SUMMER BBQS Yang Yang Xue, University of Waterloo
Summer’s the season for picnics and barbecues. For the University of Waterloo’s Circle K club, this means bi-weekly barbecues where we sell hot dogs. This event doubles as both a social event for members and a fundraiser for the club. There’s nothing like bonding over fallen hot dogs and the five second rule!

K-FAMILY WINE AND Cheese night Clara Lockhart, University of Ottawa
To wrap up an amazing school service year at the University of Ottawa Circle K Club, we organized and hosted a Wine and Cheese Night for CKI'ers and Kiwanis Club of Ottawa members to socialize and share details of what we've been up during 2016-2017. The evening, hosted at All Saints Church in downtown Ottawa, included a selection of fine cheeses, desserts, wine selections, jazz music, and raffle prizes. It was also a fabulous opportunity for many of our newer CKI members to meet Kiwanians who have generously supported our club for many years. The night was a huge success, and due to positive feedback from both clubs, it is sure to become an annual social event.
KIWANIS FAMILY PICNIC Hadi Tehfe, McMaster University
The 100th Anniversary Picnic was a celebration of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa’s successful centennial of service! Held June 10, 2017 at Vincent Massey Park, Kiwanis, Key Club, and Circle K members were invited to experience an afternoon full of food, music, and fun. Key Club LTG Jennifer, as well as Christina, Clara, Hadi, and Freya (from three different Circle K clubs – Western, University of Ottawa, and McMaster University!) volunteered with setting up and packing up the picnic, as well as creating and holding games that the children would surely enjoy. With the help of these volunteers, along with the amazing activities, food, and people, I believe the 100th Anniversary Picnic was most definitely a key event that those in attendance won’t soon forget.

KEY CLUB DISTRICT CONVENTION Ivy Leung, Western University
Christina, Lyndsay and I had the chance to return the annual Key Club DCON as Circle K’ers in April. With the aim of promoting Circle K among the graduating Key Clubbers, we participated in various DCON workshops to look into what most Key Clubbers look for when joining the K-Family, and educate them about the opportunities provided by Circle K. While sharing our university experience and our involvement with the club as formal Key Clubbers, we were also learning from the high school students; the passion that they have when reciting the Key Club pledge, the eagerness to meet new people and to learn new things, and most importantly the love for volunteering. I think this is one thing that university students always end up forgetting when they get too busy to manage a club, or to arrange certain club events to hit a target. I believe the goal after all, is to give back to the community while making it a worthwhile experience with our peers, and I am thankful that the Key Clubbers reminded me that. Seeing how much our home clubs have grown was also truly rewarding, we were glad that the passion that we all shared when we joined the K family remained in our clubs and inspired more young leaders to make Key Club wonderful.

KIWANIS DISTRICT CONVENTION Jordan Dunlop, Western University
The 2017 Eastern Canada & Caribbean Kiwanis District Convention was held in Ottawa from May 18 to 20 this past Spring. Representing Eastern Canada Circle K at this conference were District Editor Christina Moica, District Membership Education Chair Clara Lockhart, and District Club Development Chair Jordan Dunlop. Our representatives spoke to Kiwanians about developing Circle K Clubs during two forums on Service Leadership Programs and Christina Moica also brought greetings to the entire convention on behalf of Governor Lyndsay-Marie Talon and the district. Additionally, our representatives spoke with Kiwanians from across Eastern Canada about their potential interest in forming or reactivating Circle K Clubs at their local postsecondary institutions. The Eastern Canada District of Circle wishes to thank the Eastern Canada & the Caribbean District of Kiwanis for its hospitality and congratulate them on another successful convention.

INTERNATIONAL FROM YOUR SUBREGION F TRUSTEE Hello Eastern Canada District!
SUBREGION F NEW YORK DISTRICT NEW England DISTRICT NEW JERSEY DISTRICT CAPITAL DISTRICT
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer break and preparing for CKIx. Can you believe that it is only a few days away? I know I can’t. This year, CKIx will be held in sunny Texas, San Antonio. The international board has been working extremely hard, planning out all the fun activities for each of you to engage in. I am excited for you all! On a different note, although it is the summer, don’t forget to continue volunteering. Volunteering never stops, there is always someone that can use your help. Your act of kindness may not change the whole world, but it changes that person’s world. Looking back at this year, I am extremely proud of how far the Eastern Canada District has come. Immediate Past District Governor Christina has laid a strong foundation for your district to build on. I believe the foundation is the most important part as it lays the track for the years to come. As my term comes officially comes to an end, next month, I want to personally thank you all for your service and dedication to not only your district but the entire international organization as a whole. We would not have been able to accomplish as much as we have without your countless hours helping out your communities. Again, thank you! I wish you all the best of luck on your future endeavours and feel free to reach out to me if you want to talk. Yours in service and care, Henry Wang Subregion F International Trustee

The Inner Circle – Advice for
FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS Sarina Gandhi, University of Guelph
Arriving to university for the first time can be exciting and thrilling, as well as intimidating and scary for a lot of students. This is the first time you’re venturing out into the world on your own, taking control of your educational experience, and similar to what people said in high school, “this is going to be one of the best four years of your life”. I’m sure you’ve heard scary stories about university while you were in high school, but I’m here to tell you that it’s not as scary as people make it out to be. Based on my personal experiences and learning more about university as I’ve gone through the years, I can tell you with confidence that if you put in the effort, you will not be disappointed. There’s something satisfying about working hard and actually seeing the results that you’ve achieved. The most important thing I’ve learned is to not fret the small stuff. You will have countless assignments, midterms and exams that will seem like a huge deal in the moment (I’m not saying that it isn’t a big deal), however, if you happen to not do as great as you’d hoped, don’t worry about it. This is one, two, or even three exams in a pool of 60+ exams. Things like this will not make or break you. And speaking about you, YOUR health is important! Students tend to get carried away with stress which is actually very detrimental to the body after long periods of time. 4 months in a semester is a really long time to be constantly stressed. It’s important that you find effective and time efficient study methods. It’s also important to take breaks while you’re studying. Go for a walk, go to the gym, spend 2 hours after a long day and watch that TV show you’ve always wanted to watch. It’s important to give yourself mental breaks. Also, find ways to be physically active. This has been proven to be beneficial for your brain (and body of course), and it helps retain the information that you’ve studied. Be sure to have a social life. Join clubs, meet a friend for lunch, and don’t be afraid to join those intramurals. I’ve experienced both sides, where I’ve cornered myself and studied ALL the time (no exaggeration), but I’ve also learned from it and realized the importance in working hard and also getting out there and doing activities that interest you. After a year or so, I was able to find that work-life balance and a better version of myself came out of it. Lastly, make sure you’re eating healthy. Freshman 15 is a real thing. However, with the options available to you on campus, be sure to make the best decision for yourself. Your brain and body will thank you for it in the long run. Anyways, good luck to all of you first years! University isn’t as hard as people make it out to be, so again, don’t worry about the little stuff. Enjoy what you’re learning and enjoy this experience, because one day, you will miss it!
Congratulations 18
