Projects for the Year

Message from the Editor Hey everyone! My name is Ethan, and I am the District Editor of the Eastern Canada CKI District this service year. I joined the Circle K club at Western University last year as a first-year student, and I am so glad that I made that first step. In this first issue, you can look forward to learning about a few of our service partners, projects we have planned for the year, and a recap of CKIx 2019 by our International Trustee! I am so excited to see and write about all that our district will accomplish this year. I hope that you all have a wonderful November and rest of the semester. Make sure to be kind and take care of yourselves! 1

OCTOBER: Service Partner Spotlight In partnership with UNICEF, one of the anchor programs supporting CKI’s signature WASH project takes place in October every year: Trick-or-Treat for

UNICEF!

WASH

is

the

collective

term

for

Water,

Sanitation,

and

Hygiene. The WASH project aims to provide education, awareness, and funding to supply clean drinking water and sanitation education to schools and children in developing regions around the world.

Since 1990, UNICEF and partners have helped provide access to safe drinking water for more than 2.6 billion people!

This program reoccurs every October and is well known throughout CKI. In support of UNICEF and CKI’s WASH project collaboration, members go door-to-door on Halloween with collection boxes to fundraise for the WASH project. Next year, consider getting involved by showing off your little orange box on October 31 and asking people you know for donations. Or create your own initiative, such as an awareness or fundraising event!

NOVEMBER: Service Partner Spotlight For the month of November, we like to highlight the work done by one of Circle K International's preferred charities,

March of Dimes. This nonprofit

organization works to improve the health of mothers and babies.

Their mission is as follows: "We

believe

that

every

baby

deserves

the

best

possible

start.

Unfortunately, not all babies get one. We are changing that."

November is also Prematurity Awareness Month. Throughout the month and on November 17, World Prematurity Day, March of Dimes is shining a light on the maternal and infant health crisis. They aim to reduce the rates of preterm births and infant and maternal mortality through advocacy work and fundraising. On November 17, you can show your support for their cause by wearing purple or by donating to March of Dimes.

A

SUMMER

TO

REMEMBER

CKIx 2019 Recap By Chelsie Selena Higdon CKI Trustee 6

When I think about CKIx19, I have to say it was an event that was truly magical for me. Being CKIx Chair, I was super stressed leading up to the event and hoping that all the planning my committee and I had done was going to pay off, and it did.

Seeing our members come together from all over the world truly shows how big of a difference we can make when we all work together. Having over 300 members come together for fellowship, service and to interact with Kiwanis at their convention meant the world to me. Seeing our members come together from all over the world truly shows how big of a difference we can make when we all work together. Along with this being able to represent them and take that next step in my leadership roles reminded me why I love this organization so much.

I was able to give back to our members by helping plan CKIx 2019 and it will always hold a special place in my heart due to that. I always tell members that if they want to see what Circle K International is about come to International Convention. This next year in Vegas is going to be one you don’t want to miss! Keep an eye out for CKIx 2020 updates in a future issue!

Dues 101 International, district, and club dues are used to help Circle K International (CKI) function in a variety of ways. Dues fund member services (such as CKI websites), meetings and conventions, marketing and promotion efforts, administrative operations, and travel/visits. Paying your dues not only grants you the benefits of a membership, but also helps a leading international organization make positive change around the globe.

In

addition

to

understanding

where

your

dues

go

and

how

they

are

used,

you

may

be

interested in understanding how you can personally benefit from joining CKI. Here are just some of the direct benefits you get upon paying district dues:

Attending club events and having your service hours tracked Insurance coverage Access to district events Opportunity to network with students and professionals around the world who are involved with Kiwanis International Opportunity to work with CKI clubs at other schools Ability to run for Club Office, District Office, and even International Office Receiving a record of your service, proving your commitment to improving the world, from an internationally respected organization

Did you know CKI is on more than 550 college and university campuses around the world? By working with CKI, you have a great opportunity to

build your resume.

There are plenty of

opportunities to stand out as a leader because you can get involved on a local, district, or even international level. CKI along with several other service clubs are all part of Kiwanis International. When you work with Kiwanis, you can

make a real difference in the world.

Another major benefit of working with Kiwanis and CKI is

fellowship.

By attending service

events, conferences and conventions, members are always making new friends and building new

memories.

Our

connection

professional development

to

Kiwanis

also

promotes

career networking

and

as collegians and professionals across a wide variety of work

fields are involved in Kiwanis. Even if you are only looking to get involved with a few local service projects throughout the year, CKI is a notoriously welcoming and fun club that gives you the chance to

be part of something great at any level of service.

Contact your Club Treasurer for more information on how to become an official CKI member!

Support and Assistance Should you have any questions or concerns, please bring them to the attention of District Treasurer

The Tomorrow Fund Need funding for a service project or initiative? If so, you're in luck! Applications for the Tomorrow Fund are open!

The Tomorrow Fund offers grant money to clubs and districts in good standing that are in need of funds to complete a service project. Through a reimbursement process, clubs and districts can receive funds towards a service initiative that will positively impact their campus or community.

The committee typically funds those clubs asking for a portion of the total cost of the

project,

organizations

to

fund

must be submitted online

Welcome to the Kiwanis Family! Dee Fisher My name is Deanna Fisher and I am the Kiwanis Family Relations Chair for the 2019-2020 Circle K Service year. I will be giving updates to members on the world of Kiwanis, and all the different clubs that belong in the Kiwanis Family. October was a very exciting time in the world of Kiwanis. There are many events that members in all levels of the Kiwanis family can be involved in. On October 1st, Kiwanis celebrated the beginning of their new service year. Kiwanis Clubs inducted their new club officers, and have held their inaugural meetings for this year. I had the pleasure of attending a Kiwanis Caucus meeting where they celebrated the year that was, and started to make plans for the upcoming service year. This year will be full of service and fellowship, and culminate with the Kiwanis District

Convention in Fredericton, New Brunswick (May 14-16) and the Kiwanis International Convention in Indianapolis (June 18-21). I can’t wait to see what this new Kiwanis Service Year will bring! Kiwanis One Day is when Kiwanis Clubs participate in a day of service. This year’s Kiwanis One Day was October 26th. Kiwanis members engaged in different events worldwide with the main objective of helping children. Clubs sponsored by Kiwanis are encouraged to contact their sponsoring club and arrange an event to do together, or see if you can join their existing event. As always, if you have any questions regarding Kiwanis, at any level, contact me at kfamily.eccirclek@gmail.com.

Governor's Project This year, our Governor's Project is fundraising and raising awareness for Sign Fracture Care International, a humanitarian organization that gives the injured poor access to fracture surgery by donating orthopaedic education and implant systems to surgeons in developing countries. Their vision is to create equality of fracture care throughout the world.

District Service Project Environmental Awareness With climate change becoming a more pressing issue every day, we have chosen as a district to make this year's service project about environmental awareness. With this theme in mind, clubs are encouraged to create initiatives aimed at making positive change in the environment and reducing our carbon footprints or waste.
