The Douglas County Agricultural Association is proud to present your 2023 Douglas County Fair.
We have 4-H exhibits, FFA exhibits, DIY (open class) exhibits, Master Gardeners, senior citizens, the Hubbard Radio Stage, Knute Nelson Stage and much, much more.
Visit each building on the fairgrounds to see what is new. Many vendors, crafters and businesses will be anxiously waiting to share with you what they do and have to offer.
When you are done visiting commercial vendors don’t forget to stop at one or all the food vendors found on “Calorie Lane” and elsewhere throughout the fairgrounds.
Then stay around for entertainment such as Mollie B & Squeezebox, the Fabulous Armadillos, Eli Alger and The Faster Horses, and Runestone Rebellion all on our Alomere Health Stage, located just east of the Lions Bingo Stand. These shows are free with paid fair entry.

You asked and we listened, so this year we have a Glenwood State Bank grandstand event featuring recording star Jameson Rodgers. Saturday’s evening event is a ticketed show and tickets can be purchased for this show along with daily and season passes on our website at dcmnfair.com/tickets.
Along with Jameson Rodgers tickets, we will also have an opportunity to purchase daily and season passes and “Golden” tickets that include east gate parking and a season pass on our website at dcmnfair.com.
Some of the returning events include a lawn mower demo derby, Viking Speedway’s Friday night demo derby, Pork Producers pork chop feed, Glacial Ridge Cattlemen’s steak fry, and beer garden.
The carnival opens each day at 1 p.m.

I invite you to join the Douglas County Agricultural Association for a $5 annual fee. As a member and a Douglas County resident, you can vote for the county fair board. Your membership will allow you to have input on future county fairs and determine if the tradition of our Douglas County Fair continues.
Several years ago, when I was first elected to the fair board, a fellow fair board member challenged us with this thought “Why do we have a fair?” Since its inception in 1888 when the first county fair in this community was held, fair boards have probably been asking that same question.
Over the years, the history of the fair tells us of some of the struggles and the many successes of a county fair. We believe that the Douglas County fair brings people from all walks of life together. At the fair, we are honored to see the projects of the many fair exhibitors that we would not have had if there was not a fair.
As fair goers, we can socialize with fellow fair goers, bringing together people with a passion to “see what’s new at the fair.” Over the years, “entertainment” has been a bigger reason for some people to go to the county fair and more entertainment has been added.
So, we determined the answer to “Why do we have a fair?” is anchored in tradition and change. There are many benefits to Douglas County and this part of the state because we have a fair.

Leadership and discipline are just two of the learned virtues that we see at a county fair. Our county fair board is currently working to continue the tradition beyond 2035.
Why that date you ask? That date is the last year of our lease on the current fairgrounds. We have been active over the past 5-plus years in determining the best way forward beyond 2035. There are many parties that must come to a mutual agreement to enable our fair to continue beyond 2035. I think it should. Our community is a better community because of the county fair and its many supporters.
If you see or have an opportunity to thank someone that you know for supporting the fair, please tell them so and ask for their continued support. We need them and you as fairgoers to be successful.

At the fair, tickets will be sold from kiosks.
Once again, Senior Day will land on the first day of the Douglas County Fair, Wednesday, Aug. 16, and those age 65 and over will receive a reduced admission price of $7 at the gate only.
As usual, many activities are planned for them around Kathryn LeBrasseur Heritage Square and Knute Nelson Heritage Stage.
“Heritage Square is home place for the seniors,” said Kathryn LeBrasseur, for whom the square was named. “It’s a place to gather. It’s a place to sit and enjoy ethnic food and enjoy watching the old-time crafts as well as the music.”
Did she say old-time crafts? That’s right. The crafts are back this year after taking some time off. These
volunteers who excel in oldtime skills like spinning wool or carving wood will sign up for four-hour shifts, so that there will be demonstrators each day of the fair from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Also back are agencies that can help seniors who might not be able to connect with them online or through any
other means. These agencies will set up tables around the log cabin, even providing specially designed phones to those with hearing or vision impairments.
Among these agencies are Habitat for Humanity, which will offer information about its remodeling programs to help seniors stay in their homes longer. West-Central Minnesota Communities Action will explain how seniors can get help making their homes more weather resistant.
At 2 p.m. on Senior Day, century farms and outstanding seniors will be recognized at the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage.
This year, there will again be live music on the Heritage Stage, but there will also be activities intended to draw all
ages, including the kid’s bike give-away each day and the Douglas County Fair Princess Pageant on Thursday, Aug. 17. It will provide something for grandparents to bring their grandchildren to.
Of course lefse, Rømmegrøt and other ethnic foods will be available in the log cabin. Seniors will be able to get free water courtesy of Henry Foods.
LeBrasseur said she is hoping that fairgoers will remember that the covered area around the log cabin are for seniors, those who have purchased heritage foods, or for demonstrators. It’s not intended as a dining area for people coming in from Calorie Lane, as eating areas are set up elsewhere for that part of the fair.
4-H isn’t just about raising animals. 4-H youth develop skills they use throughout their lifetime in a positive youth leadership environment. Douglas County 4-H has 15 clubs with 645 members between traditional 4-Hers and the after school club 4-Hers who bring their best to share during the Douglas County Fair.
Come on out to the fair and see what wonderful things can happen when youth are provided positive outlets for their energy and potential.

Open Class
Open Class contests are open to anyone of any age who lives in Douglas County or neighboring counties. Open class registration closes on Saturday, Aug. 12. Pre-registration is required. Deadline for mail-in registration is August 7th.
Open Class entry day is Monday, Aug. 14, from 1 to 7 p.m. Open Class will be released on Sunday, Aug. 20, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
In a continuing effort to streamline the Open Class entry process, the Douglas County Fair is pleased to announce that it has partnered with Fair Entry to offer an online registration/ entry process. Advanced registration is required.

Here’s a rundown of the various musical acts during the four-day event:
Wednesday, Aug. 16
10 a.m.-Noon. Nathan’s Oldtime Band on the Hubbard Radio Stage
Started in January 2012 by a group of young musicians, this band’s polka and country music unites all age groups in dance and having fun.
12-4 p.m. Katy’s Swing Band on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage
These musicians, based at the Alexandria Senior Center, play music of various genres including swing, rock and roll, big band dance music and show tunes. They perform for various community events throughout the year.
7-10 p.m. Fabulous Armadillos on the Alomere Health Main Stage
This St. Cloud band recreates songs from many musical genres, including country, Motown, heavy metal and 70’s soft rock. They are known for their themed shows at Pioneer Place On Fifth Theater in
St. Cloud. Their name derives from a nickname for keyboardist Greg “Gary D.” Armstrong, once a member of the Bobby Vee Band, and they call their fans “Dilloheads.”
Thursday, Aug. 17
4:30-7:30 p.m. Rick Fiedler on the Hubbard Radio Stage
Raised in Wheaton, Rick Fiedler has been playing guitar and lending his vocal talents to audiences since he was a young man. He is best known for his 80s and 90s country show, along with classic rock.
8 -11 p.m. Eli Alger & the Faster Horses on the Alomere Health Main Stage
This band plays both kinds of music – country and western. Eli has opened for major acts like Randall King, Lorrie Morgan, Jesse Keith Whitley, Tyler Booth and James Carothers
Friday, Aug. 18
Noon-2 p.m. Mikko and Friends on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage
Mikko Cowdery of Osakis has been a miner and a newspaper publisher. He is now known for the Celtic, Irish and folk music he performs on a multitude of instruments, alone and in groups.
7-10 p.m. Runestone Rebellion on the Alomere Health Main Stage
This local band plays music ranging from Motley Crue to Creedence Clearwater Revival and Merle Haggard to Poison. Sometimes, they’ll even throw in an original song for good measure. Saturday, Aug. 19
4:30-7:30 p.m. Blonde & The Bohunk on the Alomere Health Main Stage
Well-known locally, this country band often entertains at benefits and for happy hour and dinner crowds. They have performed at numerous locations, including Moondance Country Jam in Walker and just recently at the Alexandria Rotary’s Summer Sounds by Brophy.
1-4 p.m. Mollie B & Squeezebox with Ted Lange on the Alomere Health Main Stage
Put your dancing shoes on and get ready for an afternoon of entertainment. Mollie B & Squeezebox with Ted Lange is a collaboration of award-winning musicians with extensive performance backgrounds, and is led by National TV and recording star, Mollie B, and two-time Grammy Nominee Ted Lange. Performing several engagements a year all across the United States, they’re able to accommodate requests that bridge generations, nationalities and musical styles.
Mollie and Ted are the first and only husband and wife to be both inducted
into the International Polka Association Hall of Fame. They also host one of the only two polka shows on Sirius XM. And since March of 2020, their YouTube popularity has grown due to their weekly Tuesday night show. Mollie is the host of the popular “Mollie B Polka Party” on RFD-TV, which is currently broadcast into over 48 million households via DISH Network, Direct TV and over 600 independent cable systems.

From new ticket deals to popular performers, the 2023 Douglas County Fair is trying hard to live up to this year’s theme: “More to See in 2023!”

Rodgers’ hits include “Some Girls” with 14 million YouTube views and has been streamed 80 million times. “Cold Beer Calling My Name,” a collaboration with Luke Combs, has garnered 16 million YouTube views.
If you like to polka, Mollie B & SqueezeBox will also perform on Saturday, from 1-4 p.m. on the Alomere Health Main Stage with her husband, Ted Lange.

The $15 price is about $10 cheaper than last year.
► Fairgoers are welcome to paint a barn quilt in the DIY building. Barn quilts are quilt designs painted on wood and displayed on the outside of barns or other buildings. When this one is fin ished, it will be donated to 4-H.
► Another public project is a large “Banner of Thanks” that fairgoers can sign to express their appreciation to members of the military.

The Alex Power and Equipment Lawn Mower Derby, a free event, will take place on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Glenwood State Bank Grandstand.
There is no entry fee to participate. The modified class will be run only if there are four or more tractors registered the day of the event.

Here are just a few of the many things that can be found during the four-day event:
FFA Barnyard – Children love to see all the different animals at the fair each year. Join the local FFA groups in the barnyard to learn about agriculture and participate in farm-to-market activities.
Balloon art – A balloon artist will be making free balloon designs Thursday, Aug. 17 and Saturday, Aug. 19 in the Glenwood State Bank grandstand.
Bike giveaway – Hubbard Radio will be doing its bike giveaway at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17. Must be present

Pedal tractor pull – The kids pedal pull will take place Saturday, Aug. 19, at noon in front of the Game and Fish Building. 12:30pm is start time. Registration begins at noon
Princess Pageant – The 2023 pageant will take place Thursday, Aug. 17, at 5:30 p.m. on the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage.
Andria Theatre performances – The cast of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” will perform at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18 and the cast of Disney’s “Newsies Jr.” will perform at 5:30 p.m. on the same day.
Chahinkapa Zoo – Zoo animals will be on display on Friday, Aug. 18, from 1 to 2 p.m. on the Hubbard Radio Stage.
Book reading and giveaway – Beth Leipholtz is an advocate for inclusion and accessibility who is raising her deaf son, Cooper, bilingually in hearing and Deaf cultures. She will be reading her book, “The ABCs of Inclusion” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, on

The fair’s annual contest is set for Saturday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Knute Nelson Heritage Stage.
There will be competition for three classes:
1st class will consist of anyone up to the age of 12
2nd class will be for ages 13 to 18 and
3rd class will be open to anyone
The winner will be able to move on to the Minnesota State Fair for their talent competition.
