Keynote Speakers Kakenya Ntaiya Kakenya Ntaiya was set to follow the traditional path of girls born in the small village of Enoosaen, Kenya. Engaged at the age of 5, she was to participate in a female circumcision ceremony as a young teenager and then be married. But she had a different plan. First, she negotiated with her father and willingly agree to be circumcised, only if he would allow her to finish high school. Later, when she was accepted to RandolphMacon Women’s College in Viriginia, she negotiated with her village elders to do what no girl had ever done before, leave her village to go to college in the United States. She didn’t leave forever, though. Deeply proud of her heritage and of her community, Ntaiya returned to the village after school and worked with her elders to establish a school for girls there. The Kakenya Center for Excellence was established in 2009 with 32 students. A primary grade boarding school just for girls, the curriculum focuses on academics, leadership and female empowerment, along with cultural preservation and life skills. While families that can afford tuition do, Ntaiya also works with donors to provide scholarships for others.

Keynote Speakers Peter Dalglish Peter Dalglish is the founder of Street Kids International and is a leading authority on working children, street children and war-affected children. After graduating from Stanford and Dalhousie Law School, Peter Dalglish organized an airlift of food and medical supplies from Canada to the starving African nation. His encounter with emaciated and destitute refugees seared him for life. In Khartoum in 1986, Peter Dalglish began the Sudan’s first technical training school for street children, funded by Bob Geldof of Band Aid. Pickpockets, petty thieves and housebreakers were transformed into carpenters, welders and electricians; the graduates were hired by local businesses. Inspired by the tenacity and ingenuity of kids society had written off, Peter Dalglish returned to Canada in 1987 to found Street Kids International. Armed with $200, a borrowed office and an American Express card, he launched an agency that has become a global leader in designing creative self-help projects for poor, urban children.

Sustainable International School Governance (SISG)
Utrera
Joined by a diverse peer group of board members, heads and other senior administrators you will examine how today's boards, school owners and heads are contending with profound questions about anticipating and managing change. You will be exposed to the latest thinking on Leadership in Action, and discuss skills and strategies that can be applied to future and current projects and activities. Through a combination of presentation, case studies and debate attendees will gain a deep understanding and mastery of group and organisation dynamics. We will discuss the importance of change management . Just why has project change management become such a critical part of the successful repertoire of a leader ? All businesses today need to accept the reality of constant, fast change in the global environment , be it economic, political or social. For profit and not for profit organizations are constantly confronted with the potential of financial instability, new competitors and operational challenges. This can only intensify and all of us can expect to face an ever-increasingly complex range of challenges and must develop capacity to lead responsibly. The capacity for project change management is not a skill that will serve once, but throughout your career and that of the school you represent. The workshop will include Coffee Breaks and Lunch. Vegetarian options will be provided, but should you have any special dietary requirements, please inform the ECIS staff in advance. The iPad Effect: what the research is telling us
Nervion I
Tablets in general, and the iPad in particular, are rapidly becoming the must-have tech in schools fearful of being left behind in the rush to embrace mobile. But what are the educational benefits of adopting iPad implementation schemes in schools, and how can heads and principals ensure that they don't become the next IWBs - expensive tech toys with mostly untapped potential used by teachers unevenly or not at all? ACS Schools are entering their fourth year of using iPads in the classroom and our implementation was accompanied from the very first days by a longitudinal research project mentored by advisors from Harvard Graduate School of Education, ACS Schools' own Centre for Inspiring Minds and two Scottish universities. This project now includes ten schools in the UK and elsewhere that are providing consistent and usable data about good practice and optimal pedagogical effectiveness using iPads in classroom settings from Early Childhood through to High School. This presentation presents some of that data alongside the voices of teachers who demonstrate how the iPad has guided them on a journey from the substitution stage to the redefinition stage of the SAMR model. The focus is on four specifically defined aspects of pedagogy that have traditionally proved challenging for schools introducing technological initiatives and that are now yielding insights that directly benefit teaching and learning. Richard Harrold, ACS Cobham International School

Reflection, Responsibility and Inspiring Action
Giralda VII
The session will consider issues of leadership and how we as leaders need to reflect, take responsibility and then act to inspire those in our community. One particular leadership skill that can support a community uniting behind an inspiring educational idea, is an awareness of how to create and maintain intercultural understanding within the community. Without understanding there cannot be unity or combined energy and drive towards a shared goal. With shared understanding, a school can grow and their community achieve great things. The session will explore issues of leadership in different contexts, some ideas about intercultural understanding, reflection, responsibility and action. There will be interactive group discussion and activities to explore these ideas, and some resources shared for future collaboration and development. The role of the Alliance for International Education in supporting this sort of collaboration will be provided in brief. Darlene Fisher, AIE

The Evolving Curriculum: Recognized Leadership Approaches
Nervion - Arenal III
Impactful curriculum is an evolutionary process and its success is dependent on a variety of strategies to support teacher engagement. This interactive workshop will provide school leadership, interested in curriculum, a valuable framework for thinking through and measuring overall development of their curriculum efforts. We will explore keys questions and strategies to guide the journey: How is your curriculum design approach evolving with the changes in your school? How does your curriculum influence decisions and daily practice? How is the school community engaged in the process? This workshop is presented by Rubicon International and will include tools such as Atlas, the web-based platform used by schools to support their curriculum renewal efforts. We will provide a forum for discussing possible strategies and considerations for addressing key aspects of the curriculum work. Participants will walk away with new ideas to invigorate their process and resources that will be developed based on the unique goals and priorities of their school. The Benefits and Challenges of Thematic Learning in the Middle Years
Giralda III
Neurological research findings increasingly emphasize the particular needs of the adolescent learner, challenging existing secondary school approaches to their learning. Therefore, more and more secondary schools are asking themselves how a thematic approach can work in practice for middle years students and within the existing structures of a secondary school. In this session we will discuss why a thematic approach is helpful, how it has to differ from similar approaches in primary schools and share some practical advice. Workshop Enhancing Board Performance
Santa Cruz
This session will look firstly at how important it is for the board as part of an aligned and strategic thinking organization to set and implement meaningful and measureable annual goals and to embrace systematic evaluation of their performance. This should ideally be done not just through self-evaluation. Secondly, without the right membership, boards simply cannot play a major role in shaping how the institution should flourish and grow. The best boards are composed of individuals with different skills, knowledge, information, and time to contribute. Given the diversity of expertise, information, and availability that is needed to understand and govern today's complex education institutions, it is unrealistic to expect board members to be knowledgeable and informed about all phases of the business. It is also unrealistic to expect the board to be outstanding without uniting behind a common vision and accepted code of behaviour. How do we achieve the necessary balance? How Ambitious Are You for Your Communication/Admissions/Development PR/Marketing and Alumni Office? Some professional functions in schools are in permanent flux and the expectations the different stakeholders have for them change over time. This is the case for the communication, admissions, development, PR, marketing and alumni functions. Professionals in these roles often have a lot of expertise, experience and intuition and sometimes suddenly discover a disconnect with their Heads or Board members. ECIS Heads have been invited to fill out a survey on what they would wish their communication, admissions, development, PR, marketing or alumni professionals would know, do or initiate. The results will serve as reality check for all parties involved (Trustees, Heads, above mentioned professionals) and will be presented and discussed during this session. Finding Another Path
Giralda I-II
Peter Dalglish has spent more than twenty years working in the front lines of Afghanistan, the Sudan and Nepal designing and managing projects for some of the poorest children in the world. Among his most dedicated volunteers have been recent graduates of international schools in Europe, Asia and North America who have opted for a gap year before continuing their studies at university. Peter believes that international schools can play a key role in 'preparing young people not merely for lives defined by materialism and consumerism, but rather so they are equipped and eager to address some of the biggest challenges of our age'. He often quotes Kurt Hahn, the founder of Outward Bound and the United World Colleges, who cautioned his own students about 'the paralyzing effects of wealth and affluence.' The presentation that Peter will deliver, drawing on his extensive experience connecting international schools with projects in the developing world, will both provoke and inspire. The DNA of Teaching and Learning
Giralda III
It's well recognized that, at the heart of good learning, the DNA, is a set of practices that 'work best'. Among these are the processes of establishing clear learning purposes with students, finding out where they currently stand, establishing goals at the right level of challenge, and giving formative feedback on their progress. Simple to say, and critically important, but remarkably difficult to achieve consistently with every learner. This workshop offers information on, and open debate about, assessments used as a tool to support teachers in measuring learning progress, the distance travelled from baseline to current level, for diverse learners. The conversation will be contextualized with reference to different curricular models including the Common Ground Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate. Off Site Venue
The Alcazar of Seville ( Spanish Reales Alcazares de Sevilla or Royal Alcazars of Seville )is a royal palace in Seville, Spain, originally a Moorish fort. It is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe, and it was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with the Seville Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies. The Almohades were the first to build a palace, which was called Al-Muwarak, on the site of the modern day Alcazar. The palace is one of the best remaining examples of mudejar architecture. Subsequent monarchs have added their own additions to the Alcazar. The upper levels of the Alcazar are still used by the royal family as the official Seville residence and are administered by the Patrimonio Nacional. The buses will depart from outside the Melia Hotel at 19:00 promptly, so please gather in the Main Lobby by 18:50. Striking Accord - a new take on the old conflict problem
Giralda V
Fact 1: Wherever people gather together in groups there is a potential for conflict. Fact 2: If there is no-one present with an enlightened view and a desire to resolve the conflict it will flourish. Conflict appears in a variety of shapes, forms and degrees but inevitably it distracts people from their core work and detracts from the health and vitality of a work environment. We have spent a lot of time seeking and learning about tools to resolve conflict but this is rather like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. This is an interactive and enjoyable approach to an otherwise generally uncomfortable subject, offering a new insight into a fundamental cause of conflict and its reduction in the workplace. Why School Admissions and Curriculum Design Is the Same Thing
Triana
Of course, in most international schools around the world curriculum design and school admissions are worlds apart. But that is the problem. We suggest that there has been a structural fault in our schools that today means the people charged with telling the story of our school are disconnected from the designers and implementers of the learning programme. Equally, those of us who are educators may rarely give due consideration to the impact of market trends and consumer needs when designing the what and how of learning. Through a facilitated conversation, where participants will be encouraged to wrestle with a number of challenging questions and share their experiences, we will explore together a future in which both educators and admissions professionals can combine their skills and effectively communicate a learning vision to a range of community stakeholders. This workshop encourages participation from: Trustees, Heads, Principals, Curriculum leaders, Admissions professionals. In Flux: A New Approach to Enrolment and Money
Nervion I
As the population in many international schools continues to react to the ebb and flow of economic factors, political factors and the ever-changing expectations of the host country, schools often struggle to maintain mission and enrolment at the same time. In this session we want to focus on that struggle to balance need, expectations, enrolment demands and financial sustainability. We plan to share the newest ideas and models for serving multiple needs and masters, yet remaining true to the core mission and values of each school. The session will be interactive and the participants will leave with specific ideas/goals or questions to bring back to their board and leadership to facilitate a deeper conversation for the future. Professional Learning Network: Leveraging Learning
Nervion - Arenal III
In this hands-on workshop for school leaders we will explore and learn how to leverage Blogs, Twitter, Diigo, Google+ and Linkedin accounts to support your leadership within your respective learning communities. We will look at the mechanics of these accounts: work on settings, privacy and security. We will explore methods for you to connect with other educational leaders. We then will help you start building a Professional Learning Network (PLN). We will look at what it means to have a PLN, how to brand yourself, what aspects of the digital footprint you need to be mindful of, and how to leverage these social media venues for your own learning, sharing and collaboration across the globe with your school. In tandem we will look at how to balance all this information and resources so you have the time to digest and use this in your busy day. We then will discuss how this model can be supported within your own school learning community with a variety of different professional development structures. Please have a Blog, Twitter, Linkedin, Google + and/or Diigo accounts set up prior to coming to the workshop. Giralda I-II
Peter Dalglish is the only Stanford alumnus working in Afghanistan, where he serves as Country Director for UN-Habitat. His many years of experience working in conflict-affected countries, including the Sudan and Nepal, has shown him that education for girls is a right that cannot be comprised. As we approach the 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goal of universal primary education how well have we done in ensuring that girls and young women have access to classrooms, and are protected from violence and exploitation? What role can international schools and their faculty play in providing new opportunities for learning for some of the world's most marginalized citizens? Peter Dalglish, United Nations

Developing a Whole School Ethos and Vision to Actively Promote and Develop Students’ Cultural and Linguistic Identities We will first review the key lessons from the latest research on language acquisition. Our aim here is to build multi-literate, global citizens, who can contribute positively and flexibly to an international community. In addition, we should also give equal value and support to our children and families' cultural roots. In this session, we will stress the critical role of Mother Tongue in our international schools which extends far beyond language learning. We will also reflect on the leadership roles and duties necessary to embed these principles in our school practice. After establishing this theoretical understanding, we will then explore different ways of bringing the research to life: from starting off to further development steps. This exploration will take place within the constraints of our own realities and challenges. In particular, we will look closely at the broad approach of The International School of The Hague as a model. Following the current ESL/MT research, the ISH places high priority on translating the language acquisition theories into innovative programmes. Integrating Mother Tongue into daily practice helps their students to strike a balance between these two key perspectives and strengthens their total learning. This is a practical session where language initiatives will be explored through concrete, pictorial and video examples. Mapping our Common Ground
Giralda III
The Common Ground Collaborative (CGC) is a non-profit global network of leading international schools working together on a coherent learning continuum, The Common Ground Curriculum. The Curriculum is supported by a learning-driven ‘toolkit’ addressing all aspects of a school’s work, designed to support schools in the shift from working in silos to thinking in systems. This workshop will be framed as a professional conversation exploring all aspects of this new way of thinking about ‘the learning business’. We’d suggest that, to get the most from the session, participants explore the curriculum design in advance, available at www.thecgcproject.org .

Heading for Success
Giralda I-II
How can international schools make the most of headship transitions? New leadership has the potential to bring renewed spirit and school cohesiveness when there is a confluence of three critical factors: 1) the board hires carefully, 2) the board paves the way for the incoming head to be successful, and 3) the incoming head is strategic in handling the entry period. By ensuring that changeover is handled thoughtfully, schools can avoid a rocky start or short tenure for the new head and lessen the rapid turnover that can exhaust and demoralize a school's human and financial resources. The purpose of this study was to document the factors that incoming heads and hiring trustees identify as crucial to shaping the success or failure of the headship transition in international schools. Findings from this study should guide future research and practice aimed at improving transition experiences for international school heads. What is an IB education?
Giralda III
The recent publication What is an IB education (IBO 2013) describes the core values and principles that underpin all IB programmes with their mission to develop international mindedness. These are further explicated in the publication Programme standards and practices (IBO 2010) as requirements which should be clearly visible in all IB school communities. When policies are viewed as a set of dynamic practices they can be powerful in transforming whole school culture so that it embodies IB values. But in order to be so effective, the policy implementation must be a priority supported by the school leadership. This presentation will demonstrate the links between a school language policy and the development of international mindedness, highlighting the responsibilities and actions that are needed across the whole school for success in an IB education. From Foes to Friends: Hot Lessons from the Cold War
Nervion I
They say necessity is the mother of invention, perhaps then conflict is the inspiration of learning. We are after all, teachers, guiding our students toward problem solving on a daily basis. Many cultures share the wisdom of understanding one's adversary in order to be prepared for future conflict. Many of the greatest scientific and technological breakthroughs in recent decades, particularly in physics, communications, medicine - even the microwave oven! emerged from learning undertaken in times of war. When learning takes place in adversarial conditions, does that always lead to undesirable outcomes? When we study an adversary and seek understanding, are we not actually taking the same road described in the IB Mission Statement that seeks to create a better and more peaceful world through inter cultural understanding and respect? When we make an intensive study of an enemy, whether for academic, political, or military reasons, do we not sometimes find that other people, with their differences, can also be right? Two former 'Cold War Warriors', Dr. Malcolm Pritchard and Dr. Vladimir Kuskovski, are now heads of IB World School in China and India, two of the world's most populous countries. Both are fluent in languages they did not know when growing up in their respective homelands of Australia and Russia. Both studied the cultures and languages of the other nations intensively and emerged with an understanding and respect that is put into practice each day in their schools. In this session, these two former 'adversaries' will share some of their experiences learned on the road to becoming educational 'allies'. Transition of a New Director – A Practical Experience
Giralda I-II
Peter Mott, Doug Marston, and Jeff Paulson from Zurich International School will lead a discussion of transition by sharing their story of what ZIS did to honor and celebrate the transition of a long-term Director, yet welcome and transition the new Director for success. The workshop complements transition work done by Pearl Kane and Teachers College, Columbia University. The transition process used in ZIS practical experience involved three phases of recruitment, pre-transition for Peter and Jeff, and post-transition for Jeff. By sharing our unique transition experience, it is our hope other international schools will benefit by learning how developing a purposeful transition plan creates clarity and makes a huge difference to a Board of Trustees, Leadership Team(s), community, and to the departing and new Director of a school. The process at ZIS proved to be very successful and sent a positive message of the community working together in the best interests of the school community moving forward. Coaching Post-Conference Institute
Utrera
In its role of enhancing collaboration among the educational community worldwide, and with a focus on supporting excellent school leadership, ECIS is developing its capability of providing mentors and coaches to heads of schools around the globe. Who should have a mentor or coach? Daresh (2004) says that mentoring (and coaching) must be included in any experiential professional development programme. Guides...are needed to help professionals negotiate their way through a field and make sense out of what is happening around them ... as a result there is considerable potential to be found in applying the concept of mentoring (and coaching) to the professional development of school administrators (2004). With the ever increasing number of new international schools and new leadership in these schools, there is a growing need for a source of experienced and capable leaders who can guide and support these new leaders in the field. ECIS will be asking experienced and retired heads of schools who have worked outside their country of orgin in a variety of geographical areas, to take on some training to become coaches and mentors with well known trainer Steve Barkley Coaches and mentors will then be able to connect through ECIS with heads who are new to the role, or facing interesting new challenges and who ask ECIS for support. The ECIS coaches and mentors will be focusing on supporting heads in their leadership roles and in a variety of challenging circumstances, or potentially simply as mentors helping their school leaders with their professional development.
