Jim and Margie Hess were like many Minnesota couples that are nearing retirement. They had their hearts set on a new home to spend their restful days. They wanted a home that would be uniquely their own where they could enjoy one of Minnesota’s greatest features, a glistening, peaceful lake. For 18 years, the couple had enjoyed a lakeside home during weekend visits from their permanent residence in the metro area. As they prepare for retirement at their jobs as optometrists, they knew that their weekend getaway didn’t have the space they needed for year-round living. As they began their search for a new residence, their realtor and neighbor suggested a 1950’s rambler on Lake Koronis in Paynesville that he believed was just what they were looking for. “This place had me at the driveway,” said Margie. “I’ve always wanted a newer house. A bigger house. A place that our grandchildren and children would like to visit when they see us. It didn’t even matter to me what the house looked like. I was just thrilled with the view of the lake and the trees.” The property came with many amenities that cannot be added to lakefront property any longer, including a boat house and a large landing. ate need of a new look. “I don’t think this place had been remodeled since it was built. The rooms were small, making the house choppy. It didn’t have an open concept, which is what we wanted,” said Jim. Leaving the shell of the house, the couple tore out every wall and feature from the inside of the home to it’s studs. They now had a blank canvas to build their vision, but coming up with a vision can be a challenge in itself. Aside from an open floor plan in the kitchen, dining room and living area, the couple didn’t have much of an idea of what they wanted. With only the dimensions of the rambler, they reached out to the local lumber yard for help in designing their new home. “Scott Schaefer with Bork Lumber and Steel was the backbone to the whole thing. He helped us every inch of the way. We didn’t have much of an idea ourselves, and he was awesome in helping guide us to the right suggestions,” said Margie.
It wasn’t only the lumber yard that helped the Hess family design their dream home. Ron Mehr Construction, Haines Electric, and B.C. Excavating are all local laborers that made the process fun and easy for the couple.
The kitchen was Margie’s biggest focal point within the home. She knew she would be spending a great deal of time there and wanted to make sure that it had the features she needed to make

To help accomplish the look and functionality that she needed, they hired Schlangen Cabinets of Eden Prairie. “Boy were they helpful in designing the cabinets,” said Margie.“The kitchen is the spot I needed to be most comfortable in. Now I have a kitchen that I love. As I stand at the island in my kitchen, I can look out the window and see the lake, then look out the other window and see green, thick forest. It’s very user friendly and has a big peninsula that has overhanging cabinets so that if I’m working in the kitchen, people can sit and visit with me.” It took only four months for the internal remodel to be completed. The hardest part was the paperwork needed to build their 10-foot addition onto their lakefront property. The basement of the home was left incomplete, but they do plan on remodeling it next winter. Although the home is technically a remodel, the amount of work

Three bedrooms is plenty of space for the couple. A master bedroom is 17x14 with a 7x14 master bath. There is a 14x11 guest bedroom, and the grandchildren get an 11x11 space all their own.

Burtrum builder branches out with treehouse for rent

Dean, Kendra and Donna Lange are a family that stays together by building together, and hope to finish their latest project by July 1. By GABBY LANDSVERK Correspondent Money may not grow on trees, but apparently houses do, at least for one tenacious family of do-ityourself builders in Burtrum. Dean and Donna Lange, and daughter Kendra Lange, have been hard at work for the better part of a year constructing a vacation cabin of 850 square feet, 18 feet in the air. The tricky part, though, is that the Burtrum family has constructed the treehouse almost entirely by themselves from raw materials; every board comes from lumber that was milled (sometimes from trees on the property) for the family, which they then planed and sanded themselves. Everything but the roof, built by carpenters, has been a labor of love for the family, masterminded by Dean, who has long dabbled in construction as a hobby. “Everything that happens here is Dean’s idea,” Donna said with a
laugh, referring to numerous other buildings on the property Dean designed and built. Although he went to school for a five-week course in log home building in British Columbia, Dean said most of his skill in construction comes from practice. “Just trial and error, and talking to people ... asking questions,” Dean said. He’s consulted other carpenters for projects over the years, but this has been the most challenging. “Nobody’s been able to give me an answer,” Dean said of some of the more difficult parts of the house, such as the angle where the rafters intersect. As a result, he’s had to use a little creativity, a lot of hard work and long nights spent in the shop, sometimes until 3 a.m. Some of his best thinking, he said, happened in the shower or as he’s trying to fall asleep. “It has to be a bit of a gift,” Donna said. “I’m always amazed at what he comes up with.”
The process of building the treehouse has been a trying and sometimes overwhelming ordeal, the family said, but their sense of accomplishment has kept them going even when it seemed impossible. “I thought, ‘We’re never going to get this,’ but by noon the next day almost everything was up already,” Donna said of one particularly tough bit of building. The family has worked on the treehouse for just about one year, beginning last spring and with a brief hiatus from the start of hunting season until January. “Last summer we decided we weren’t going to play at all, we would just work,” Donna said. Even more amazing is that the family fit their treehouse building into an already-full schedule. Dean has his own heating and cooling business and Donna runs a salon in nearby Upsala. She said even after a long work week, building the treehouse can sometimes be good stress relief. Continued on Page 26

Even with all the attention it’s been getting, Donna said, there’s a lot more to the treehouse than meets the eye. “There’s so much stuff, nobody will ever know how much time it took,” Donna said. The family did everything they could by hand, investing a lot of time but saving money in the process. “If we had needed to buy all the lumber, it would have cost thousands ... but we had it all milled and did it all ourselves, like everything we have here,” Donna said. “It’s never really been done before,” Dean said of the huge scale of the Langes’ treehouse. The couple said other treehouses are impressive in their own way, however. “The one in Wadena is very different than ours. It’s very cool,” Donna said. The Langes’ is by far the largest of local treehouses and may be the best furnished, fully equipped with electricity, and plumbing (installed by contractors) as well as heat and air conditioning. “Hopefully it will be something that people will enjoy,” Donna said. The family is still ironing out the details, but plans to rent the space by the day, with discount rates possible for a whole week or weekend. For now, they just want to be finished building to enjoy a hardearned break. “We are going to sit down for at least a year,” Donna said. “But he’ll never be done.”
