Is that medical test really needed? Have you ever had a CT scan or lab test that you didn’t think was needed — or wanted antibiotics for a possible sinus infection, but your health care provider wouldn’t give you one? Next time, ask why. CentraCare Health has joined a national effort that encourages health care providers and patients to talk about medical tests and procedures that are not needed, overused or may be harmful. It offers easyto-understand information about health conditions and helps patients know what questions to ask to receive appropriate care. In Minnesota, this campaign is called Choosing Wisely Minnesota and is supported by the Institute of Clinical Systems Improvement, Minnesota Medical Association and the Minnesota Action Group. The goal of Choosing Wisely Minnesota is to reduce the overuse of health care services that
may cause harm and increase health care costs. It also provides a list of procedures and tests to avoid or limit, such as: Don’t do imaging for low back pain within the first few weeks, unless red flags are present.
CT scans are not always needed to evaluate minor head injuries. Don’t do imaging for uncomplicated headache. Don’t plan to induce labor or C-sections before 39 weeks unless
medically necessary. Don’t routinely give antibiotics for sinus pain unless symptoms last for seven or more days, or symptoms worsen after improving. Do not repeat colonoscopy for at least five
years for patients who have one or two small (<1cm) polyps fully removed by colonoscopy. Avoid routine pre-operative testing for lowrisk surgeries without a clinical sign. For the full listing of
procedures and services to avoid or limit and other educational materials developed with the help of Consumer Reports, visit centracare.com and search “Choosing Wisely Minnesota.
