Marshall Sward and Kevin Strelow

will be new runningbacks this season. SR tackles Cameron Braund (GPB Honorable Mention) and Nick Hammond bring back the most experience on the line which graduated four starters.

On defense, Vaughan returns to safety where he was third in tackles (63) and led with 5 picks.

Sward (58 tackles) and Strelow (47 tackles) lead the linebacking crew in experience, and Braund is the leading returning tackler on the D-line (20 tackles, 3 for loss) Great Polar Blue and Section 7A Outlooks: The Bombers will be gunning for Pine City since the Dragons are the defending champs in the Great Polar Blue. The Dragons graduated MVP halfback Adam Olson who was a perennial thorn against foes.

Coach Kuhnke: “All teams in the conference and section bring different strengths.

It will be strange since we get one year in Section 7A, then next year we are back in Section 7AA. But we will also have a different alignment to our conference in 2012, moving into the smaller group of the Great Polar Conference (White division), so our regular season schedule that fall will be completely different.”

Barnum is the defending champion of Section 7A, closing its season in a first-round loss at State to Minneota.

East Central won the section back in 2009, and Ogilvie is another familiar member.

Britne Engelking: “This will be a year in which we will grow with every match and every new experience. The girls have great chemistry and will not let the ball touch the floor without a strong fight. They all have the passion and fire to play the game. The mental game may be a challenge for some, but with SR Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (GRC Honorable Mention in 2010), JR Becca Dahlman and SR Kayla White all returning to their third year on the varsity team we do have players that have handled the mental challenges that the elite level of play brings.

“It would be my hope that the girls enjoy every match they get to play together and that we end up at .500 or better at the seasons wraps up. We will look to Becca, Kelsey and lefty SR Sarah Tomlinson to be the big hitters for us this year. Look for SR Amanda Sybrant and Becca to set up some big blocks this year in the middle. Becca will also be playing in the back row which will speed up our game immensely. Kelsey will also be playing all the way around adding some great passing, as will SO Kayla Nickles who has really turned up

her game this year. Kayla White will be the libero, adding great passes and a level head to the game. Having the ability to make less substitutions this year will give us a chance to get into a fasterpaced match which has been something Braham athletes have been notorious for in other sports. I am excited to be able to bring that dynamic to the volleyball court this year. Although we have lost the majority of our starting lineup I am very excited to see what this years team produces.”

Great River and Section 5A Outlooks: Rush City caught the Bombers in a wild five-game match near the end of last season to take the GRC championship.

But the Braham girls turned the tables on the Tigers in the section playoffs, rallying for a 3-1 win. Coach Engelking predicts Rush City and Onamia to bring back strong volleyball skills again this autumn.

In Section 5A, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (28-4) knocked off defending champ Nevis in the 2010 finals to reach State.

The Jaguars then went 1-2 at the Class A tourney to finish in 6th place.

Anderson, Abby Salmonson Boys returners– Jacob Rajkowski, Connor TenNapel, Thomas Warner, Nick Jones Positives for 2011 season: The Bomber girls bring back their entire varsity which competed at last year’s Great River and section finals. SR Austyn Eng has been running CC since 7th grade and brings back strong leadership. JR Jessica Westman, SO Rachel Eskuri and JR Sammy Patterson all earned GRC Honorable Mention last season. Eskuri began this season by running a personal-best 17:24 at the Milaca Invite.

SR Jacob Rajkowski is back for one last season after placing 16th at the GRCs in 2010. SO Connor TenNapel and 8th graders Thomas Warner and Nick Jones gained valuable experience running in the Section

5A finals a year ago.

Head Coach Joe Rajkowski: “The girls have a number of years of experience.

Hopefully, that will help them place in the top two at the conference finals, along with gaining more All-Conference honors. The boys will see the young members learn more as this season progresses, and hopefully we will get All-Conference honors in that race, too.”

Great River and Section 5A Outlooks: The Pine City girls aim to defend their title with their entire lineup back, including medalist JR Abby Cummins. The PC boys graduated their top 4 off their GRC champ team; Rush City returns its top two runners. St. Cloud Cathedral swept the titles at the 5A finals.

Positives for 2011 season: Head Coach Josh Lowman: “The boys will have to replace the top three spots and will also have to look for significant contributions from those who have served time on the JV squad or are newbies.

Replacing Billy Eifert (three-time AllConference, two-time individual State entrant), Sam Westerberg ( two-time Allconference, State entrant) and Brandon Simon (M-8 Honorable Mention) will be tough, but I think that we may have the legs to do it. A handful of guys logged miles this summer and that should pay dividends down the road.

“There is a lot of potential on this squad, and the next couple of weeks are going to help us learn what we have.

I really want to make Monticello earn another conference title and not run away with it. It is a tall order, but I think that these guys are up to it.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Lowman: “As with the girls, the Monticello boys look to be the favorites in the M-8. Buffalo returns some strong runners, as does Rogers.

The 2nd-5th spots could be very tight with Buffalo, Rogers, our Bluejackets, and St. Michael-Albertville all vying for position.

“The boys also welcome Andover (6th at State last year) to Section 7AA. Forest Lake looks to return almost all of their runners off of their 14th-place State squad last year. In the section, our overall goal is to crack the top-two and earn a trip back to State. It will be more difficult with strong teams from Forest Lake and Andover, but it is not impossible. A top-four finish is very realistic.”

Experienced legs back for C-I Girls 2010 Cambridge Girls Cross Country records: 7th place Mississippi 8 Conference, 13th place Section 7AA Finals 2011 Lineup: Returners– Alex Nelson, Maddie Oullette, Taylor Ouellette, Amy Head, Andrea White, Brooke Thunstrom, Michelle Ziebarth Top Depth– Paige Muehlhauser, Erica Young, Kylie Guimont

Positives for 2011 season: Head Coach Josh Lowman: “We return almost everyone from last year’s injury-plagued season.

Injuries are exactly what we will be trying to avoid this year. We also have some newcomers that look to contribute right away as we aim to compete to our potential. It was only a couple of years ago that the girls were as high as 4th in the conference, and I really think with the right mind set we can accomplish that. As far as the section goes, I would love to see us get into the top 10.”

SR captain Alex Nelson is working to get back to All-Conference stature which she reached two autumns ago. FR Maddie Oullette is back as a three-year varsity runner for the Bluejackets. JR Paige Muehlhauser, and SR Erica Young are both new to the sport but are catching on quickly.

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Lowman: “The girls will be competing regularly with who I believe is the best team in the state– Monticello. The Magic should easily repeat as conference champs and may very well win the State title, as well. Following them in the conference are strong squads from St. Michael-Albertville and Buffalo.

“Section 7AA didn’t get any easier either for the girls. New section member Andover placed 5th at State last year, and old members such as Elk River (4th at State), Forest Lake and Grand Rapids (perennial State entrants) create quite a competitive section.

Still, we look to move up on our placing from last year, and I believe there are many teams that we can compete with.”

nator to head coach of the Bluejackets this autumn. He will have the benefit of a good corp of players who return with varsity experience in this 101st season of Cambridge-Isanti football.

This season also marks the beginning of changes to be seen in C-I’s affiliations.

The Mississippi 8 loses Princeton and Zimmerman to the Granite Ridge, with Becker to follow next fall. Eight teams remain for 2011, but due to a game arrangement with the Central Lakes and Granite Ridge conferences, the Bluejackets will have just six conference matchups this season. C-I travels to Zimmerman this Friday in the first non-conference game, then the squad will host St. Cloud Tech in a potential playoff preview on Bluejacket Homecoming eve.

Head Coach Mike Hennen: “The boys have been working really hard– practicing really hard and hitting the weight room.

We’re taking this season one thing at a time: one play at a time, one game at a time. We take care of all the little things and we should have a memorable season to look back on.

“At Saturday’s scrimmage at Eden Prairie, our first big positive was we came out all healthy. I thought the team competed really well. We asked them to get after it, and they definitely did that.”

SR Clayton Jennissen is back for his second year as starting quarterback (558 yds, 5 TD in 2010). Jennissen is an effective leader, but he will need more time from the line in the pocket to improve upon his 33-percent completion rate. SRS Cole Bakke (543 yds, 3 TD), Jordan Locken (235 yds), Trent Chromy (213 yds, 6 TD) and JR Chance Laidly will bring inspired running to the backfield this season.

Top returning receiver SR Tom Selz (12 rec/252 yds) is injured to start the season but could be back midway. Experience

returning to the O-line is found in SRS Jon Knowlton (switching to G), Jeremy Ham, Brennon Olson and Erik Lindgren.

The Bluejacket defense performed well most of last season, including only surrendering 21 points over two playoff games. C-I also shut out M-8 rivals Buffalo and St. Michael-Albertville. SR Grant McCormick and Chromy are back from that unit on the D-line, and Bakke returns to an outside linebacker slot. SR Ryan Epsen is back at corner where he led C-I with 4 interceptions in 2010. Locken also started at CB last year, and Jennissen is a returning safety.

Replacing record-setting kicker Eric Mielke are SR Aaron Kordiak and JR Joshua Rouse– both C-I boys soccer players, too.

Mississippi 8 and Section 8AAAAA Outlooks: Two-time defending champ Rogers swept its conference games last season. The Royals kept rolling to the Class 4A State title game before bowing to Totino-Grace. They lost plenty of talent to graduation, including three-year QB Bjorn Bloom, but Coach Hennen foresees the Royals to rebound well. Becker will be moving to the Granite Ridge Conference in 2012, so the always-gritty Bulldogs will be aiming to head out of the M-8 on a memorable note.

In Section 8AAAAA, two-time defending champ Brainerd is still the team to beat.

The Warriors knocked off Moorhead in the section finals, then they backed that up by taking down Eden Prairie in the first round of State. Rosemount ended Brainerd’s season in the Class 5A semifinals before losing to Wayzata in the championship. This will the Bluejackets’ last season in this affiliation, shifting over to Section 7AAAAA in 2012 when the new largestschool Class 6A comes into existence.

New-look Bluejackets take to the nets 2010 Cambridge-Isanti Girls Tennis records: 2-5 Mississippi 8 Conference (6th place), 8-11 overall, Lost in first round of Section 7AA tourney 2011 Lineup: Returning varsity players– Kate Lentz, Amanda Hanson, Madilyn Booth, Nicole Hallstrom, Erika Schmieg Positives for 2011 season: Head Coach Lee Orvik: “It is hard to say who will play where this season. We have a fairly inexperienced squad this season, so we will be playing girls in both singles and doubles to develop their strengths and to build their confidence.

“We have five returning starters from last year’s team. We graduated our top two singles players and our top doubles team, so everyone is going to be moving into new roles on the team. We have a good variety of ages on the team with a

large number of very young players. It is an exciting group of athletes to work with. They have great potential.”

All-time Bluejacket wins leader Tori Marlton was one of the grads off last year’s team. SR Kate Lentz and JR Amanda Hanson played primarily at Singles last season, with JRS Madi Booth, Nicole Hallstrom and SO Erika Schmieg seen at Doubles. But during the playoffs, the lineups were switched around, so the Bluejackets received experience at both positions. The team had the added challenge of traveling to North Branch this pre-season stretch since the CIHS courts underwent resurfacing this summer.

Coach Orvik: “We want to work our tails off to compete with everyone. We have a lot of new faces on the team this year -- girls from last year’s JV and middle school squads. We need to develop our players’ match-play confidence. We need to learn what it takes to compete and be successful at the varsity level. I am very excited about the young talent on this squad. This group of girls has a lot of success headed its way.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Buffalo swept its conference

matches to defend its M-8 title. Coach Orvik also predicts Becker and St. Michael-Albertville to be very tough, also.

In Section 7AA, Elk River won the championship for the fifth straight season. 7AA Singles champ JR Faith Lee is back to lead Andover.

• The Bluejackets opened the season at the Aug. 23 St. Francis Quad where they fell to Chisago Lakes 6-1 and to the host Saints 5-2. Then on Aug. 27 back at St. Francis, C-I held off Cloquet 4-3 before defeating Duluth Denfeld 6-1 to even their record at 2-2.

Head Coach Mike Galligan: “Our first priority is to stick together as a team and make sure everyone accomplishes development as a player and a person. Our initial hope for the season is to be competitive in the conference

and improve our conference standing. One thing I’ve seen already as I come back to coaching girls soccer after a seven-year hiatus is that this group of athletes is willing to work hard and give it everything they’ve got. Given that quality, we have high hopes of advancing in the section tournament.

“SR Brittany Skog, JR Michelle Cook, and SO Kallan Hartnett will lead the front line in the striker positions, and along with talented newcomer FR Melyssa Varsoke who are all fast with quick triggers. SRS Lexi Brown, Tiffany Krueger, Carly Armstrong, JRS Nicole Morgan, Jazzy Erickson and SO Megan Dawson give us a veteran midfield with plenty of game savvy. The backfield will anchor the squad with excellent leadership provided by SR co-captain Roxanne Holmberg and JR co-captains Emily Moore and Hannah Prigge. SO Justine Larson will serve as

our goalkeeper, giving the team a tenacious lastline of defense in the net.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Galligan: “The western corridor of the conference will be tough again with St. Michael-Albertville, Monticello, and Rogers providing a high level of competition.

“In Section 7AA, I look for Duluth East to be a formidable force with the entire squad made up of returning veterans.”

Rogers is the defending champ in the M-8, with the Royals closing last year’s 24-0 season with the Class A State championship. Duluth East (14-6-1) won the 7AA title last year and went 0-1 at Class AA State.

• The Bluejackets opened the 2011 season with a 6-1 loss at Chisago Lakes Aug. 25.

The starters listed in the 2011 Lineup opened the season, but Coach Rouse said there is very good challenges for starting spots from the rest of the team as the season goes deeper.

SR Skye Hunt-Schuft and FR Josh Samsa are more returning starters from 2010. The Bluejackets did graduate a large portion of varsity minutes.

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Rogers had its

senior-led squad claim the Mississippi 8 championship last season with a 7-0-1 mark. Coach Rouse foresees the Royals, St. Michael-Albertville, Monticello and Buffalo giving his Bluejackets the most challenging games during the conference season.

In Section 7AA, Anoka held off Duluth East in the 2010 finals. The Tornadoes, Coon Rapids and Blaine are the favorites to start this season.

Joshua Rouse totaled 1 goal & 2 assists. Adding solo goals were Skye Hunt-Schuft and Sam Brown, with Travis Olson and Joel Hieserich passing for 1 assist. The Jacket defense played hard to keep the Tigers from the net.

Coach Olson is taking over as the interim head coach while Susan Kaspar is on leave. Her Bluejackets will have to make up for the graduation of a dedicated class of seniors which included State Diving entrant Anna Solbrack. SR Katie McCann is a past State relay entrant who placed 4th in the 50 Free and 10th in the 100 last year at the 7AAs.

More high finishers at sections included SR Sydney Johnson (Backstroke), JRS Hannah Thiry (Diving) and Carly Dupre (Breaststroke).

Altogether, there are 48 athletes out for the varsity and JV Bluejacket teams.

Head Coach Vicki Courts: “I would like the team to place in the top half of the conference, have a winning record and host a section game.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAA Outlooks: Coach Courts predicts St. Michael Albertville, Buffalo, Rogers and Monticello to bring tough teams to the court in the conference this season. The STMA Knights have won six straight M-8 championships after running the tables at 8-0 in 2010. Buffalo was a game back at 7-1.

In Section 7AAA, Andover (18-14) rolled to its fourth-straight championship and

State berth, finishing in 6th place at the Class AAA tournament. Duluth East was the section runner-up.

• The Bluejackets opened the 2011 season with a very tight loss to sectionpartner North Branch Aug. 25: 24-26, 27-25, 25-20, 25-26, 16-14. Walfoort led C-I with 30 kills, 5 blocks and 28 servereceptions. Baas averaged 11.8 assists/ game and knocked in 6 aces serves. Hedberg finished with 20 serve-receptions.

The C-I girls evened their record at 1-1 with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-18 sweep of former conference-rival Princeton Aug. 26, playing with an explosive style and working well as a team. Walfoort finished with 16 kills, and Korbyn Felde had 6 kills and 7 digs. Torgerson helped out with 3 aces serves, and Baas lofted 35 assists.

Sydney Larkin produced 9 digs and was 19-for-19 on serves.

2010 Cambridge Christian Soccer records: 6-3-1 Christian Athletic League regular season, 15-4-2 overall, 3rd place CAL Finals tourney 2011 Lineup: Forwards– Josh Roble, Anders Boyum, David Fryc, Jack Swenson Midfield– Jake Wold, Ellie Werlein, Bill Enos, Tyler Ellingson Defenders– Cheol Oh Park, Peter Maring, Charlie Swenson, Justin Roble, Hannah Solomon, Sophie Morris Goalie– Grant Taylor Positives for 2011 season: Head Coach John Newton: “I fully expect a championship this year. We have eight returning starters. Anders Boyum and Josh Roble will bring a potent attack, and Jake Wold

returns at midfield where he led the league in scoring in 2011. Josh Roble was second in scoring last year in the league. We also have a solid defense and Grant in goal. As long as we stay healthy, we should be in very good shape. We return the top two goal scorers and three of the four defense starters, so my expectations are high. We are our worst enemy at this point. Complacency and passivity are a larger issue than our opponents. As long as we stay motivated and hungry, we should be very good.”

CAL Outlook: Coach Newton: “Christian Life and defending tourney champ Mt. Lake should pose the most threats. Schaeffer, who was a perennial threat, is no longer in the league. Valley is also returning most of its starters, as is Faith Foreston.

CCS returns the most starters, however, so we should have a good shot to be the top team.”

• The Warriors opened the 2011 campaign with a 4-1 win at Mt. Lake Aug. 27. Josh Roble netted two goals and an assist, and Jake Wold added a goal and an assist. Warriors feeding off successful 2010 season

Positives for 2011 season: Head Coach Rachel Newton: “We aim to reach the championship game of the CAL league. The girls have the ability to challenge themselves to be excellent at a sport while focusing on teamwork and determination to accomplish goals. I would like to see us improve our kill and ace percentages.”

JR Shelby Doble returns as a twoyear starter at setter to bring experience quarterbacking the Warrior offense. SRS Annie KinCannon, Abi Hohmann and JR Caitlin Walburg are back with the most varsity hitting experience for the team. They will need to lead the absence of good hitting skills lost to the graduation of four quality seniors.
