Welcome to Many Faces of Isanti County
Even though it is March and the color has yet to return to our landscape, there is still beauty everywhere with the promise of more to arrive soon as the warmth of late spring and summer returns. Those of us who live and work in the area sometimes forget or are too busy to see this beauty and a quick break to rejuvenate ourselves is in order. For me, that means packing up the canoe or kayaks for a trip down the Rum River, the main river in Isanti and neighboring counties. My family and I have divided the river into 2-3 hour segments that gives us time to enjoy the beauty while still being able to meet the demands of busy schedules. There is nothing better than getting up early in the morning, when everything is quiet and still, to put in along the banks of the Rum with the steam of a new day wafting from the water. The dark colored water flows swiftly over the sandy bottom as it reaches out into lowlands, creating pools of still water alongside the main channel that winds its way back and forth for miles. Deer can be seen standing along the banks; ducks and geese quietly seek shelter under a fallen trees as you wait for the first one to sound the alarm and take flight to escape; bald eagles, young and old, soar from tree to tree letting you catch just a glimpse of their majesty as they stay safely ahead of you; fish seem to roll like a barrel as they jump out of the water in front of you. With beauty like that, it is easy to forget about the mosquitoes and gnats who sometimes do their best to distract you. And before you know it, the end is in sight and it’s time to move on with your day. I can’t wait! I hope you have something fun that you like to do and make living in Isanti County enjoyable. Maybe it’s the

That is why we gather all of this information and put it into the Many Faces of Isanti County Community Guide. This guide is perfect for long time residents, those who just moved here, or those just visiting. We would like to thank all of the advertisers in the Many Faces of Isanti County guide. Without them, we would not be able to publish this book. Please take the time to patronize these businesses as a way of thanking them for this book. I would also like to thank the news team at the Isanti County News, the sales team for working hard again on this year’s book, and the governmental agencies in the area for providing this information to us. Also, thank you to Darcy Bodin, who spends endless hours in the production and layout, making sure the Many Faces of Isanti County is the best it can be. City of Cambridge
Cambridge was founded in 1866 with a name carried from New England and a population carried from Sweden. The city flourished with its combination of burgeoning businesses on the Rum River and sedulous Swedes. Today it is the county seat for Isanti County and a bustling commercial hub for the east central region of Minnesota. Cambridge City Council is comprised of a mayor and four council members. All members serve four-year, staggered terms, so elections are held every two years. Municipal elections are non-partisan and members are elected at-large. Cambridge also employs a city administrator which is a nonelected position to handle administrative functions. Council members do not hold administrative power individually, but as a unit the council has full authority over administrative processes. The council is responsible for city ordinances, managing Cambridge’s financial operations, and appointing administrative personnel and commission members. The council also serves as the Economic Development Authority. In that capacity they market Cambridge and its industrial parks to companies from around the world, administer housing policies for Bridge Park Apartments, and work to enhance the city’s economy. In addition to her role in the council, the mayor serves as the city representative to the Minnesota legislature, federal agencies and other city governments. She is also the official head of the city and responsible for declaring emergencies. Council meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 3 p.m. and the third Monday at 6 p.m. at Cambridge City Hall, located at 300 Third Ave NE. Questions can be directed to 763-689-3211.

Cambridge Community Center
A dream came true in 2009 when a community center opened in Cambridge. Residents had hoped for such a place for decades. The Community Center offers residents a place to gather for meetings, classes, volleyball games, basketball tournaments, indoor soccer, and receptions. To reserve the gymnasium, kitchen or classrooms, call 763-689-3211. Fees range from $40 an hour to $500 for a full day for the assembly hall and $20 to $40 per hour for the classrooms. Discounts are available for non profits, athletic associations, schools and community service groups. For rental
information, call Karen at 763-689-3211 or email kfoss@ ci.cambridge.mn.us. The existing community center is a joint project between the National Guard, Army Reserve and the city of Cambridge. The Guard and Reserve occupy one section of the building and it is closed to the public. The 150-member Minnesota Army National Guard 850th Horizontal Engineer Company and a 50-member U.S. Army Reserve unit hold regular training sessions one weekend a month. Guard and Reserve staff work daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cambridge Police/Fire Departments The Cambridge Police Department employs 13 full-time officers, one full-time secretary, one part-time transcriptionist and 12 volunteer reserves. The officers are responsible for criminal investigations into matters like suspicious deaths, narcotics and property crimes, among other things. They also serve the city on patrol, providing assistance to citizens and enforcing state and local laws. The department has one designated School Resource Officer. This officer strives to reduce crime in Cambridge schools and establish healthy relationships between students, educators and the police. Cambridge Police began the Reserve Officer program in 2004, training citizens to serve as support officers in special circumstances. These officers are crucial to the department during the region’s many crowded events, like parades and Fourth of July celebrations. The Cambridge Fire Department has 30 paid, on-call members. For equipment, the department boasts three pumpers, three grass rigs, one ladder truck, two tankers, and our newly added QRV (quick response vehicle). Our state certified fire fighters proudly serve our community with fire suppression, technical rescue, high angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, first responders, search & rescue, auto extrication, hazmat operations, and decontamination. Our newly completed 1000 square foot emergency operations center offers cutting edge technology with dedicated voice and data, interactie smart board, and
hi-performance multi station computers. Fire Chief Sean Okerlund can be contacted at 763-286-8633.

Cambridge Swedish Festival Cambridge Swedish Festival says Välkommen!
Cambridge is the most Swedish city for towns over 5000 according to the 2000 US Census. Area residents remember and celebrate that heritage through festivals and events sponsored by the Cambridge Swedish Festival. The goals of the Cambridge Swedish Festival are to raise awareness of Swedish culture and heritage and to strengthen connections between Sweden and Swedish- Americans by sharing experiences and information. The festival is an opportunity to celebrate Cambridge’s Swedish heritage at a summertime community festival. In 2010 the festival planners voted to come under the umbrella of CHEF, the Cambridge Humanities and Education Foundation of Minnesota. Through CHEF the Cambridge Swedish Festival will continue to offer a variety of events featuring Swedish music, children’s activities, traditional foods, church services, and interest sessions on Swedish culture, arts, and heritage throughout the year. The weeklong festival is taking a vacation for 2012. Area residents should pay attention to notices in the local media about concerts by Nordic performers. Location for many events: Cambridge Lutheran Church, 621 Old North Main Street, Cambridge, Minnesota 55008 Contact information: Susan Jacobus, Cambridge Humanities & Education Foundation 645 Old Main St. North Cambridge, MN. 55008 susan@chefmn.org 763-691-9679 www.cambridgeswedishfestival.org

Isanti County Fair The 2012 Isanti County Fair mark will mark the 135th year of this great community get-together; and with a theme of “Discovering Living History”, fair visitors will be able to take a step back in time and experience an era of days gone by. Thanks to the voters of Minnesota; the “Legacy Amendment” was approved and the Minnesota Legislature authorized the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) to provide grants to the state’s county fairs through the ‘County Fair Arts Access and Cultural Heritage Grant Program’. This funding was provided to “to enhance arts access and education and to preserve and promote Minnesota’s history and cultural heritage as embodied in its county fairs.” This year’s Isanti County Fair will be doing just that by using the funding to educate the public about our area’s history and culture. With historical attractions featured throughout the week of the fair; fair attendees will be able to learn about our heritage and the events and traditions that lead to the development of this area. The ‘Old West Society of Minnesota’ has been invited to set up an encampment near the fairgrounds pond during the week of the fair. Fair visitors will be transported back to part of history dating 1865 - 1899 and be able to

look inside a tent; watch cooking demos over an open fire or see a real working chuck wagon. They will be invited to witness the robbery of the Wells Fargo shipment and the gunfight at the OK corral; all presented in a historical, accurate, and entertaining way with wardrobe and authentic firearms typical for that era. Attendees will be able to continue their journey through history at one of the Great Lakes Lumberjack Shows. This family friendly show about Lumberjacks and timber sports will provide historic logging re-enactments with demonstrations on Axe Throwing, Wood Chopping, Crosscut Sawing, and Log rolling. Attendees will also learn historical facts about the logging industry in Isanti County during the 1800s; and be able to view antique logging tools used during that era. The Fair has also planned theatrical stage performances portraying the early years of the Isanti County Fair and the City of Cambridge and the Historic turn-of-the-century Stillwater Trolley will be on the grounds again this year, providing free rides around the beautiful Isanti County Fairgrounds. Make plans to come out to the 2012 fair and “Celebrate the Best Five Days of July” while you are ‘Discovering Living History’ at the 135th Annual Isanti County Fair.

Isanti is governed by a five-member city council, consisting of a mayor serving a four-year term and four council members serving staggered four-year terms. Members are elected at-large and elections are held in even-numbered years. The council is responsible for hiring city employees, establishing ordinances and managing public facilities. The administration department, consisting of a city administrator and city clerk, handles Isanti’s laws and day-to-day operations. The Isanti Economic Development Authority seeks to attract and accommodate businesses and bolster the city’s commercial tax base. The EDA commissioners are Tara Hallberg, Keith Dragisich and Larry Kuechle. The city of Isanti features a municipal liquor store, which helps control the sale of alcohol within city limits and the revenue from the store goes toward offsetting city spending. The store is located directly off Co. Rd. 5 at 400 W Dual Boulevard NE. City Council meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Isanti City Hall, 110 1st Ave NW. Isanti Police/Fire Departments Isanti Police Department The dedication of the Isanti Police Department can never be forgotten. Isanti’s Dahlin Avenue is named for Marshal Frank Dahlin, an officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a burglary. Dahlin passed away on December 23, 1926, but his memory will be forever honored in Isanti. Dahlin is an example of the level of integrity and service the Isanti Police force strives to uphold to this day. The department is staffed by eight fulltime officers, including Chief Ron Sager and Lt. Gene Hill, as well as seven part-time officers, two administrative employees and 11 reservists. The Isanti Police Department also contracts with the school district to provide an on-site School Resource Officer. For transportation and patrol the Isanti Police Department uses three Dodge Chargers. The department also owns two Chevrolet pickup trucks, which were added to the fleet at no taxpayer cost since they were forfeited by the previous owners after drunk driving convictions. The Police Department is located at 401 1st Ave. N in Isanti. The office is open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Chief Ron Sager can be reached via email at Chiefsager@cityofisanti.us. In a nonemergency, the office number is 763-444-4761. In the event of an emergency always dial 911. Isanti Area Fire District 2011 was another record year for 911 calls in the Isanti Fire District. In 2011, it responded to a total of 723 calls. This is an increase of 25.95% over 2010 and 31.65% over the past 2 years. The Isanti Firefighters are responding to an emergency call on an average of every 12 hours and 11 minutes. In 2011, Station 1 responded to 368 - 911 calls, Station 2 responded to 206 - 911

calls, Station 3 responded to 142 - 911 calls and the Fire District was called to respond to neighboring communities 7 times to help with fire emergencies. In December 2010 the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education completed the first set of criteria in the United States for Firefighter License’s. In January 2011 it licensed all of their firefighters with the State of Minnesota. Today that license means our firefighters hold a State of Minnesota Professional License for Firefighting. At this time there are 3,400 of the 22,000 firefighters in Minnesota that are licensed. 2,500 of those firefighters are full time firefighters, which leaves 900 of us volunteers in Minnesota that meet the professional standards of fulltime firefighters. Commitment, Dedication, Pride and Honor describes your Isanti Fire District Firefighter. In addition to fire and rescue services, the firefighters successfully produced the 36th Annual Firefighters Rodeo in 2011. This has proven to be a very successful fundraising event. Your firefighters gave up an additional 7,100 hours for the setting up, hosting and cleanup of this event. In the past 36 years the firefighters have donated $1,310,000 to the Fire District for the enhancement of fire protection in our area. March 1, the Isanti Fire District took delivery of a 105’ Aerial Ladder Truck of which the Firefighters Rodeo Association provided 50% of the funding for. 100% of the Rodeo proceeds go back to the citizens of the Isanti Fire District to enhance emergency services. For additional information of the Isanti Fire District and Rodeo visit www.isantifiredistrict.org. City of Braham
Isanti County Many Faces • March 2012
Braham, with its population of 1793, is the northernmost of the three major cities in Isanti County, sitting on Hwys. 65 and 107. The inspiration for the city’s unique name remains unclear: some maintain the moniker is a reverent tribute to the heroic U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, while others insist it is an affectionate nod to Abraham Swenson, one-time owner of the land the city sits on today. Despite the name dispute, no one can accuse Braham of an identity crisis. To this day the town remains dedicated to its history, its vibrant sense of community and perhaps most importantly, its panoply of pies, and famous Pie Day, held annually on the first Friday in August. Braham is governed by a five-member city council. Four of the council members serve four-year terms, while the mayor serves two years per term. The council meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at City Hall, located at 201 S Broadway Ave. City Hall is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and also contains the Braham Police Department and Fire Hall. City Hall is also the meeting place for the Planning Commission, which meets periodically on the last Wednesday of every the month at 6 p.m. The city administrator is Sally Hoy. Braham Police/Fire Departments Braham has had its own police department since the late 1950s, but instead of looking back on a half-century of success this department is focused and committed to preserving the safety and well being of the city and its residents well into the future. The Braham Police Department is staffed by two fulltime patrolmen, five part-time patrolmen, a transcriber and nine non-sworn police reservists from the community. The department is directed by Chief Robert Knowles. The officers provide full service police protection, conduct investigations, provide crowd control and assist
Page 17
the public with vehicle lockouts. Braham PD also assists with Isanti County’s Safety Camp and Braham’s Pie Day activities. For equipment, the department has four fully equipped squad cars and one Police Reserve Unit squad car. The Braham Fire Department comprises 22 volunteer members, 11 of whom serve as first responders. Braham firefighters respond to all medical and fire emergencies in the coverage area. The department uses three grass rigs, two pumpers, two tankers, one rescue truck and one slough pumper. Jeff Jones serves as fire chief.
Braham Police can be contacted at 320-396-3383 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On nights and weekends, please contact through the Isanti County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch, which can be reached at 763-689-2141. To contact the Braham Fire Department, call 320-396-3800 or for more information e-mail brahamfiredepartment@live.com. For Emergency Dial 911.
Braham Pie Day Braham got its first taste of fame in the 1930s as cabinbound travelers from the Twin Cities got their first tastes of Braham’s pies. Before long it was common knowledge that in order to make the trip from the Cities to Duluth a vacationer would have to take the “shortcut” through Braham to fill up on pie and coffee at the Park Café. The craving eventually spread to the state capital, and in 1990 Governor Rudy Perpich declared Braham the “Homemade Pie Capital of Minnesota.” The city received a tourism grant to fund a community festival and before you could say “à la mode,” Pie Day was born. The culture of pie is going to be reinvented for the 23rd time on August 3, 2012. Pie Day will feature an art show, a pie trivia contest, an amateur pie-baking contest, and the 10th annual Sweet as Pie Car Show, featuring vintage and collector cars. There will also be two of the traditional pie-eating contests, in which a competitor must eat an entire blueberry pie in under two minutes (winners receive a little fame, a little shame and a belly full of pie). Children are invited to the Kids ‘N Berries Tent just south of the bandshell in Freedom Park, where they can enjoy arts and crafts related to pie. Everyone can write a pie-ku, and compete for the title of Pie
Poet Laureate. Adults can combat calories preemptively with a one mile walk at 9 a.m. with Nathure’s Way Chiropratice Clinic before they set in to sample more than 1,000 pies. To find out more information on Pie Day and the events, call 320-396-4956, check out www.pieday.com or visit Pie Day on Facebook. Anyone interested may take part in the pie-making process on July 23 and 25 and Aug. 2 at the Braham Area High School kitchen. To volunteer, call 320-396-2089. Getting involved is as easy as... you know.

Braham’s Wastewater Treatment Facility upgrade on completion path
Greg Hunt Isanti County News The upgrade and expansion work at the Braham Waste Water Treatment Facility is heading down the home stretch this year, allowing the city to handle sewer needs well into the 21st century. The WWTF project follows a major infrastructure rebuilding stretch for Braham which included the recent new Water Treatment Plant and watertower on the city’s east side. The WWTF major overhaul was a necessary job, considering signs on one of the plant’s original buildings date back to work completed in 1939 and as a Work Progress Administration (WPA) Project in 1941. “It was a trickle filter years ago, with modifications done in the 1980s, I believe. Over the course of the town getting bigger, they were running out of room with such a small plant,” explained WWTF plant operator Mike Piha of PeopleService, Inc. “Because of that size, we had MPCA violations because there was not much margin for error when it comes to what’s going in the system and how you treat it.” Before the upgrade, Braham had only a pair of 25,000-gallon and 15,000-gallon sludge tanks. A big improvement was adding a 150,000-gallon sludge tank on the southeast side of the plant. “When those original tanks got full, we had to haul out. And we could only land-apply in the spring and the fall. And, of course, it costs money to haul out. So the original upgrade idea was adding the 150,000-gallon aerobic digester/sludge storage tank,” explained Piha on a tour in mid-February. “It’s going to be nice to have this ready to go this spring since it cuts down on the hauling trips. Everything’s piped and ready to go after we clean out the 40,000 gallons of sludge to make the final connection.” Also included in the upgrades is another aerobic emulsifier tank on the south side which will be completed this summer. A new primary clarifier in continual motion sweeps the sludge, with the solids settling and pumped through a repeating system. “We need the two aerobic tanks so we always will have one going if I have to take the other one out for draining or maintenance,” continued Piha.
The finishing parts of the system include the clear water going through the effluent trough which has a new UV system going online in May to perform a final zapping. Ultraviolet (UV) light can be used instead of chlorine, iodine, or other chemicals. Because no chemicals are used, the treated water has no adverse effect on organisms that later consume it. The crystal-clear effluent enters the creek which eventually flows southwest into Little Stanchfield Lake. Running the new system is a new bank of electronics in the Master Control Center (MCC), replacing the controls which were in one of the oldest buildings of the plant (and susceptible to corrosion). Piha also pointed out three new powerful 10 HP influent pumps soon to be installed to keep the system rolling, along with a new rag grinder which protects the whole system. All the new upgrades came with a high price tag. Fortunately in 2009, the city gained a $1.346 million grant and $778,000 40-year loan at 2.625 percent interest from the USDA Rural Development program – with funds coming from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act – to support the plan. To satisfy the grant/loan requirements, sewer rate increases in Braham were implemented in 2011 ($.60/1000 gallons) and 2012 ($.70/1000 gallons) to ensure loan repayment and increased operation costs due to the upgrade.

Isanti County Sheriff’s Office The Isanti County Sheriff ’s Office provides a variety of services throughout the county and beyond through its various units. The office employs three sergeants and 12 deputies to make sure the county is patrolled 24 hours a day. All are required to meet Licensed Minnesota Peace Officer standards and receive annual training in matters like the use of force and firearm use. In addition to law enforcement, the deputies’ duties include serving civil process papers, transporting prisoners and providing court security when necessary. The Investigations Unit consists of three specially trained deputies that handle the region’s complex crimes, covert drug operations and response to any death scene not involving hospice care. The Sheriff ’s Office also contains the county jail. Originally built in 1984, the jail was expanded in 2003 to raise the holding potential from 39 prisoners to 112. The facility is staffed by 28 correction officers, one jail administrator and three sergeants. The kitchen is operated by A’viands and prepares approximately 70,000

meals in a year. The jail also offers prisoners chemical dependency treatment, religious services and educational courses to obtain a GED. Sheriff Russ Monson has 27 years of law enforcement experience and has been working in the Isanti County Sheriff ’s Office since 1995. He oversees the office on a budget of over $5.7 million per year, which includes operations, 911 dispatch, volunteer services and jail expenses.

Isanti County History The region we know today as Isanti County was originally settled by lumberjacks from New England, migrating westward with their families in search of fresh trees to harvest. The combination of flourishing forests and the commercial fecundity of the Rum River caused the community to boom, drawing a steady influx of immigrants from Sweden and Germany who came seeking religious freedom and fortune. On February 13, 1857, Isanti County was officially born. As the once-dense woods waned, the livelihood of most people shifted to farming, particularly potato farming. Spencer Brook grew to be the largest town in the county, ahead of an assembly of small, crossroad communities. The arrival of the railroad to Isanti County in 1899, however, would bring major change to the area. Cambridge supplanted Spencer Brook as the foremost city and the latter, along with the crossroad communities, eventually faded away. Braham, Isanti and Grandy, in turn, were all birthed by the tracks. Modern Isanti County continues to grow, with a 25 percent population increase in the last 10 years to a current estimated population of 39,105 people. Isanti County is divided into districts represented by an elected board of commissioners, which currently consists of George Larson (District 1), Larry Southerland (District 2), Alan Duff (District 3), Mike Warring (District 4) and Susan Morris (District 5).

Other elected officials include County Attorney Jeff Edblad, who serves as legal advisor to the county board and commissions and as prosecutor on felony and gross misdemeanor counts. County Auditor Terry Treichel handles receipt and payment of county claims, payroll, voter registration and fishing, hunting and driver’s licenses. Sheriff Russ Monson oversees the Sheriff ’s Department and county jail. County Administrator Kevin VanHooser assists the board of commissioners with operations. He is also responsible for the management of county employees. The Isanti County Government Center is located at 555 18th Ave SW in Cambridge. Board meetings take place the first and third Wednesday of the month. For more information visit www.co.isanti.mn.us.

Cambridge-Isanti Bike/Walk Trail opens
Page 23
Elizabeth Sias Isanti County News Summer 2011 marked a historic occasion for both the cities of Cambridge and Isanti. It was 20 years for the making, but community residents now have a safe path to travel on bicycle or foot between Cambridge and Isanti. Tuesday, July 19, marked the grand opening of the long-awaited Cambridge-Isanti Bike/Walk trail. Representatives from the two cities and Isanti County gathered to celebrate the opening of the trail with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Cambridge entrance, just west of Main Street South along 313th Avenue NE. Among those on hand was former Congressman Jim Oberstar, who played a key role in securing federal funds for the trail. Oberstar looked back to 1988, when a group of students came up with the idea to create a path between the two cities, allowing them safe passage to and from school. “The students said ‘why can’t we bike and walk to school and have an enjoyable experience, and be healthy in the process?’” Oberstar recalled. “And the students made it happen. It will be here for generations to come.” The three miles of trail are now part of 35,000 lane miles of bicycle trails across the nation, he said. More than 10,000 schools have safe routes to school, “changing the lifestyles of a whole generation of Americans.” Bill Carlson, project director of Isanti County Active Living by Design and chair of the bike/walk trail committee, discussed his excitement about getting people to think about biking and walking as forms of transportation, praising the project for the role it’s expected to play in helping Isanti County residents become more active. “It’s a nice space for exercise, for kids to get between schools and it’s really a nature viewing opportunity,” he said. “I want to get people out and exercising, to know about it, and to appreciate what they have by walking out their back door.” The idea of a non-motorized trail linking the two cities was originally proposed by students in 1988, but plans stopped a year later when the committee was unable to obtain easements from the townships. The project was resuscitated in 1999 by a vanguard of activists, including then-rookie Cambridge Mayor Marlys Palmer, who followed the trail through to its final form, which stretches nearly three miles for a cost of $1.2 million. The Cambridge-Isanti trail was one of 25 projects nationwide to receive a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to promote active living, and it received other outside funding as well. It also benefited from money appropriated in the Minnesota legislature’s bonding bill, while the rest of the bill was covered by Cambridge, Isanti and the county government. A large portion of the final price comes from costs associated with building in a wetland area, but Carlson said the selected route made the best connection between the cities. Future development plans include paving a section of gravel road on Central Drive to connect the existing trail within the city of Cambridge to the Cambridge-Isanti
Photo by Greg Hunt Bike/Walk Trail. After that, no concrete plans are in the works, but Carlson said his vision involves extending the trail to Braham to connect the three cities. His role with the trail is over, though, and Carlson said he’s happy to have passed the torch so he can relax—and enjoy the trail more himself. “I’m absolutely happy. It’s a great feeling to have something done that you started and worked on for 12 years.” he said. “It’s really quite lovely. There’s a lot of spaces for bird-watching, and nice wetlands there, and wildflowers along the edge. It’s really beautiful.” Following the grand opening ceremony in July, Carlson, Oberstar and others enjoyed their first bike ride along the new trail, stopping at the center of a long wooden bridge that extends across the wetlands. It will be named Oberstar Overlook, Carlson said. Palmer looked back on the people who worked on the project over the years, thanking them for the contributions they made. “If you’ve ever heard that it takes a village to raise a child, well, let me tell you, it takes the township, the county, the cities, the state government and the federal government to build a trail,” she said to applause and laughter. “On behalf of the Cambridge-Isanti bike trail committee, happy trails.” James Oberstar Overlook A sign on the James Oberstar Overlook will read: Congressman James Oberstar served the 8th Congressional District of Minnesota for 36 years. He has had a great impact on improving all the communities of the district. He is a nationally known expert on transportation issues: roads, bridges, aviation and aviation safety, shipping in all its forms—lakes, sea and river—trails and sidewalks

(bicycling and pedestrian). Here are some of Congressman Oberstar’s initiatives that relate to the completion of this trail: • Active Living by Design: A program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to reduce the incidence of overweight and obesity by creating communities which have ready access to sidewalks and trails for people to use for exercise in their daily lives. Congressman Oberstar served on the National Advisory Board for this program. • Safe Routes to School: A national program initiated by Congressman Oberstar. This program issues grants to cities and school districts for improving pedestrian and bicycling access to schools that encourage children to walk or bike to school. • ISTEA, TEA-21, SAFETEA-LU: Sections of the Federal Transportation Bills initiated by Congressman Oberstar that allocate a portion of transportation funds for bicycle trails and street amenities. This Cambridge-Isanti Bike/Walk Trail, which incorporates these initiatives of Congressman Oberstar, will exist for generations and is a testament to his service to this community, this congressional district and to the nation.
This trail overlook is dedicated to Congressman Jim Oberstar with immense gratitude and warm feelings for all he has done to make this a better place to live. Spirit River Trail Another sign Carlson would like to put up by the trail is information about the Spirit River Trail. The CambridgeIsanti Bike/Walk Trail is part of a large ancient trail connecting the Issati villages on Mille Lacs with the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes, St. Anthony Falls, St. Paul and the Minnesota River. The Manomin Trail was a logger’s segment connecting Anoka and Brunswick. Using canoes, the native Issati used the Great Spirit River (now the Rum River) as their main connection between Mille Lacs and the area around St. Anthony Falls. Cambridge-Isanti Bike/Walk Trail Cambridge Entrance: Just west of Main Street South along 313th Avenue NE, also known as 40th Avenue SW. Isanti Entrance: The trail comes into the city and turns west along 299th Avenue NE, then south along Jackson Street NE, before finally turning east along Cajima Street and into Bluebird Park.

Isanti Rodeo/Jubilee Days Jubilee Days It’s never too early to save the date for Isanti’s Rodeo/Jubilee Days. There will definitely be something for the young, as well as those ‘young at heart’ during the 2012 Isanti Rodeo/Jubilee Days July 5-8. The kick-off for this year’s festivities is 2012 Isanti Parade, brought to you by the Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for Thursday, July 5 at 6:30 p.m. Each year the parade features around 200 floats and proves to be the best in the area. The parade showcases area marching bands, community organizations and businesses, classic cars and tractors, area non-profit organizations and churches and many others. Isanti’s streets are filled during the parade, so get there early to get a good seat. Parade organizer Brian Strike is looking for sponsorships to support this year’s parade. If interested, contract Strike at 612-308-7089. Also on Thursday, the Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce will host its 29th annual pig and turkey roast, to be held at the Isanti Community Center from 3 to 6 p.m. Most of the Saturday, July 5 activities will once again be held on Isanti’s Main Street and behind Isanti City Hall. Isanti Firefighters Rodeo Performances Haul down that old hat and oversized belt buckle, and brush a mite of mud on those boots so they look like they’ve been worn since last year. The rodeo is coming to town. Tom Pagel, longtime volunteer firefighter, has served as chairman of the Isanti Firefighter’s Rodeo since 1978. In that time he’s watched the hometown rodeo grow into one of the top social events of the summer for Isanti County. Continued on page 26

Isanti Rodeo/Jubilee Days (continued) Now in its 36th year, the rodeo is the second longest running Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association sanctioned rodeo in the state, and one of the largest rodeos in the region. As such, it features favorite rough stock events like bull riding, saddled bronco riding and bareback riding and timed events like barrel racing, calf roping and teaming roping. But the rodeo has come to offer much more, with appeal for the rugged roper and the tenderfoot alike. Many come for the dance offered both nights of the rodeo, which this year will feature the Iron Horse on Friday night and Sterns County 17 on Saturday night. But the real benefit of the rodeo comes after the festivities are packed away, according to Pagel. “All of the proceeds we’ve ever made on the rodeo go back into the community,” Pagel said. “Nobody makes a penny on it.” The money raised from the rodeo is used by the fire department to maintain operations and enhance services. The 2012 rodeo performances will take place Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7 at the Isanti Rodeo Grounds. New this year will be Mutton Bustin’ beginning at 6 p.m. For more information on the Isanti Rodeo Association visit www.isantifiredistrict.org. For ticket information call 763-464-2508.

Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce Established 1982
121 West Main Street • PO Box 203 Isanti, MN 55040 Phone: 763.444.8515 • Fax: 763.444.4379 Email: admin@isantichamber.com Website: www.isantichamber.com Mission Statement: The Isanti Area chamber of Commerce is organized to advance the general welfare and prosperity of the Isanti Area so that its citizens and all areas of business shall prosper. The Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce is a notfor-profit organization with the purpose of helping our members and the community prosper. We serve the Isanti County area. The Chamber provides access to resources you might not otherwise have, and that access means power; the power to improve our community; the power to make your voice heard; the power to grow and succeed. Our Chamber of Commerce is compiled of businesses, civic organizations, and public entities that have joined to promote a healthy business climate and work to improve the community in which we live and work. We provide opportunities for our members to develop economically, while creating a positive environment in which to conduct business. We have a variety of programs that promote members, provide
name recognition, and help you or your business prosper. Most importantly, the Chamber of Commerce is PEOPLE. People who realize that through the Chamber they can accomplish collectively what would be difficult to provide individually. The strength of the Chamber lies in attracting the greatest number of members, creating a pool of resources from which ideas, energy, and finances can be drawn. The Isanti Area Chamber of Commerce is a member of other organizations, designed to provide added benefits to your membership, as well as being part of the larger business community and forming a working relationship with other local chambers.

Cambridge-Isanti School District #911
Cambridge-Isanti School District #911 is a comprehensive Pre-K through Grade 12 district serving the cities of Isanti and Cambridge and most of Isanti County, Minnesota. High quality education and academic success are long standing traditions in the Cambridge-Isanti School District and communities. They believe for all students to be successful in reaching their potential, a strong relationship needs to be developed between home and school. They encourage all members of the community to take an active role in their schools. Cambridge Primary School and the Early Childhood Program, grades K-3, serves the northern portion of the Cambridge-Isanti School District. The attendance area is approximately 140 square miles and includes the cities of Cambridge, Dalbo, and Grandy. The school works hard to teach students the beginning basic skills of Reading, Mathematics, and Language Arts as it contributes to the school district’s efforts to be an Academic Powerhouse. Isanti Primary School and the Early Childhood Program currently serves approximately 500 Pre K - 2nd grade students who live in the area surrounding the city of Isanti. They offer early childhood family education, early childhood preschool and early childhood special needs programs, as well as the traditional kindergarten through second grade programs. It has 35 classrooms, a full gym and cafeteria, media center, computer labs and office suite. Isanti Intermediate School and School For All Seasons is located in a facility built in 2006 that houses its traditional calendar intermediate grades 3-5 and its year-round program in grades K-5. The building has 40 classrooms, five conference rooms, a gymnasium, an art room, a large media center, a music room, a cafeteria that seats 250-300 people, two baseball fields, and a large playground. The school has an enrollment of 450 students in the Isanti Intermediate School and an enrollment of 215 students in the School For All Seasons. Each grade level and program has their own wing or house. The school is also home to the bus transfer station for the Isanti portion of the school district. The School For All Seasons is an option for Cambridge-Isanti students in grades K-5 that follows a year-round schedule that includes four sessions approximately nine weeks in length. Cambridge Intermediate School currently serves nearly 600 students in grades 3 – 5 who live in the northern half of the Cambridge-Isanti School District. It has 23 traditional classrooms, two gyms, three computer labs, a music room and a media center. CIS students and staff celebrate their academic and character education successes each quarter with a Blue Jacket Pride Recognition ceremony.

Cambridge Middle School, grades 6-8, is committed to quality education for all students. Students at CMS are encouraged to expand their talents in academics, athletics, and the arts. They are recognized for outstanding evidence of the five Character Traits — Honesty, Self-Discipline, Respect, Compassion and Responsibility. Isanti Middle School, grades 6-8, has two schools that reside within the building. Isanti Middle School is a middle school of 480 students that follows the traditional school calendar and Minnesota Center is a middle level optional program of 110 students that follows a year-round calendar from August to June. The calendar follows a 45-15 configuration where students learn for 45 days (nine weeks of school) and are on intersession break for 15 days (three weeks of vacation). Cambridge-Isanti High School, located in north Cambridge, is the home of the “Bluejackets”. With an average enrollment just under 1600, students in grades 9 through 12 attend classes scheduled in a modified block format. Students are offered required courses, a variety of electives, and may take advantage of college courses taught right at CIHS. Students can earn up to 1 1⁄2 years of college credit while attending high school. Extracurricular activities offer an assortment of opportunities from a rich variety of athletics and music options, to Mock Trial and Model United Nations, to multiple theater and speech options. In addition to classroom settings, computer labs, a swimming pool, and a career center, the CIHS campus has multiple athletic fields, tennis courts and a performing arts center to be proud of. Administrators, faculty and staff all work hard together to make Cambridge-Isanti High School the best learning place for students. Athletics Cambridge-Isanti Public Schools is a member of the Minnesota State High School League and participates in the Mississippi 8 Athletic and Activities Conference and Section 7AA. The Bluejacket Activities Department offers 26 athletic programs, along with Speech, Mock Trial, One-Act Play, Visual Arts and Music opportunities. Section and/or State Academic Team Championship gold awards have been won this year by Girls Basketball, Gymnastics, Girls Hockey, One Act Play, Boys & Girls Swimming & Diving, and Wrestling. 2010-2011 State team place winners were Boys Cross Country, Gymnastics and Boys Swimming and Diving (as of print date).

Cambridge Christian School
Now is the most pivotal time in history to recognize the importance of passing Godly values to the next generation. Parents won’t be able to pass on their faith or their values, or even protect their kids from the culture, unless they make the relational connections, loving bonds and intimate attachments that the children so desperately want and need. Cambridge Christian School strives to make those connections and bonds on a daily basis whether it’s in the classroom, in the hallway, or on the field of play. They take the education of each child seriously and endeavor to partner with parents in preparing each student to fulfill the wondrous future God has in store for them. Together they can mentor tomorrow’s Christian leaders today. Cambridge Christian School was founded in 1978 to partner with parents in educating their children within a Christian worldview. This has been the consistent mission of CCS throughout the school’s history. Their mission statement states that they exist “to partner with parents in providing a spiritual foundation through academic and extracurricular programs where children are challenged to become Christ-honoring servants.” At Cambridge Christian School they believe the most important thing one generation can do is equip the next generation to glorify God. To reach that end, they focus on four areas in equipping the next generation. They disciple students in learning how to follow Christ. They teach students to know and understand things they need to know and understand. They mentor students by serving as guiding friends and advisors. They coach students to successfully apply what they know. In short, what makes Cambridge Christian School different is that they make education personal. They build meaningful relationships, involve parents, have a purposeful and relevant curriculum, promote learning outside of the traditional classroom, and cultivate a Christ-like citizenship. They consistently strive for excellence in all aspects of your child’s education. As faculty and staff they truly believe that each child is a unique, one-of-a-kind, unrepeatable, never-to-be-seenagain, created-in-the-image-of-God, MIRACLE. Cambridge Christian School serves the whole family from Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Early Education Center provides both certified preschool and licensed daycare throughout the day. Their kindergarten through twelfth grade program provides academic, athletic and fine arts offerings as well as promotes active community service options throughout the school year. Cambridge Christian School, including the recently completed outdoor athletic fields, is located at 2211 Old Main Street South in Cambridge and can be seen from Highway 65. Secondary students meet in the core classes (math, English, social studies, science and Bible) four days a week while reserving the fifth day for superblocks of electives and service time. Both the students and staff have enjoyed this format and they are seeing the positive results it brings the learning experience. Cambridge Christian School has also demonstrated positive results through its Online Academy. The CCS Online Academy was created to offer a flexible way to meet the scheduling needs of high school students. The world is changing and the educational environment is changing as well. Students currently in college are finding their experience with online learning helps prepare them for
Page 49
higher education. Whether it is accessing materials in the libraries, managing the scheduling process, taking exams or prerequisite courses, nearly every student is expected to handle the online environment these days. One of the goals of CCS is to provide our students more experiences in an online environment. Each year CCS accepts new students from several different educational systems. Because of that, a particular student may find that they need a class outside of the normal sequence. Online education will allow us to meet that need. Certain students may need additional course choices or may need to be able to recover a lost credit. The CCS Online Academy also provides students the opportunity to participate in both Advanced Placement and Dual Credit college courses. Another benefit of Cambridge Christian School is having all their K-12 programs on one site. Older students enjoy working with the younger students in both reading groups and tutoring sessions. The elementary students benefit from the experience and knowledge of the secondary students. The older students also discover that their actions and interactions are observed and mimicked by the younger students. Few decisions will have as lasting an impact on the life of a child as the choice of his or her school. Cambridge Christian School believes that God has a wonderful plan for each child. It is the school’s goal to help students find their strengths and develop the intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual health to accomplish whatever road is set before them. If what you have learned about Cambridge Christian School fits with your family’s beliefs and needs, you are invited to make application for enrollment. Prospective parent tours are always available, and student visits can be arranged throughout the academic year. For detailed information on admissions, including grade openings and a current tuition and fee schedule, please contact the Admissions Office. Financial aid for grades K-12 is available for accepted students with proven financial need. For further information or to arrange a school visit, please contact: Cambridge Christian School 2211 Old Main Street South Cambridge, Minnesota 55008 (763) 689-3806 FAX (763) 689-3807 jdoble@cambridgechristianschool.org Cambridge Christian School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, national or ethnic origin in its educational programs, admissions policies or financial aid.

Braham Area Schools Braham Area Schools is located just north of the greater metropolitan area in east central Minnesota. The district contains approximately 140 square miles of territory in Isanti, Pine, Chisago and Kanabec Counties of east central Minnesota. It includes the cities of Braham (population 1,798) and Grasston (population 120+). Braham Area Schools has a tradition of strong family and community values and are dedicated to providing high-quality positive life-long learning to nurture each individual’s unique potential, talent and self-worth. Braham Area Schools also house the headquarters of the East Central Minnesota Educational Cable Cooperative, a joint-powers association of area schools providing interactive TV programming to its members. The district is also a member of the School-To-Work Partnership along with 12 other school districts/ communities that comprise the East Central Minnesota Workforce Council. The district is also a part of the I-35 Tech Prep Consortium, along with six other area schools. They invite you to take a look at what their district has to offer. Most importantly, they offer small class sizes with dedicated teachers to provide an excellent education to their students. Braham Elementary School Braham Area Elementary School, grades K-6, provides a comprehensive and challenging education to all students. Reading probes are done three times a year to ensure that all students are progressing in their fluency. Kindergarten students attend all day, every other day. First grade students gain reading strategies through guided reading and literature circles. Grades 2-6 use the SRA Reading Mastery Program; a direct instruction program that keeps students moving forward with their reading skills. Many elementary classrooms are equipped with Smart Boards that allow the students to become interactive with the curriculum throughout the day. This hands-on approach has been key to making the students understand the curriculum better. Supplemental programs such as Study Island and Accelerated Reading help differentiate and individualize the curriculum for students. Title One, ESL (English as a Second Language), DAPE (Direct Adaptive Physical Education), and Special Education help integrate students within the mainstream classrooms. Specialists in music, computer technology, physical education, and media enrich the students’ day and help produce creative thinkers. To provide a safe environment for students that need care before and after school the school has a program called “BASK” (Braham After School Kare). Braham Area High School Braham Area High School provides students with many opportunities to receive a well-rounded education. Along with the core subjects students have the opportunity to explore their personal interests through electives offered in foreign language, family and consumer science, industrial technology, business, music, art and science. Classes are also offered over the ITV system for stu-

dents who wish to take classes not taught at the high school. College bound students can get a head start on their college credits by taking classes offered through the College in the Schools program, AP US History, and concurrent enrollment courses offered through Pine Technical College. In addition to band and choir classes students can demonstrate their musical talents by participating in Echelon, Jazz Band, pep band and the school musical. Students interested in outdoor activities are given an excellent opportunity through the physical education department to participate in cross country skiing, snowshoeing and rollerblading. Students also can give back to the school by serving as peer tutors or teacher assistants. All juniors participate in a job-shadowing program to gather information as they begin to prepare for future career options. Students may also participate in a variety of athletic activities as well as established speech, academic bowl and school play programs. Braham Alternative Learning Program The Braham ALP is a school of choice where high school students are working on earning their high school diploma. ALP is a licensed, public, alternative high school. ALP also supports student-centered strategies, choice, and autonomy in many of its assignments, along with our core curriculum, utilizing technology, to increase motivation and engagement in learning. For 10 years now, the Braham ALP has worked with Tusen Tack, its local second-hand clothing store. Some of their ongoing Service Learning projects include loading two semi-trucks a year with clothing that is shipped to the cities. Students also clean up the local parks each year. They assisted in the planning and installation of their skate-park and multiple beautification projects of local gardens.

The Origins of Isanti County For centuries, the natural offerings of the land comprising Isanti County drew settlers, both Native American and white. Going back some 16,000 years, two gigantic glaciers – the Superior Lobe from the northeast and the Des Moines Lobe from the west – collided northwest of St. Cloud, creating a glacial lake called Lake Grantsburg which covered all of Isanti County. It deposited a mix of silty clay soil on the northern part of the county and huge sand piles on the southern end, known as the Anoka Sand Plain. Moraines (land ridges), rivers and lakes were also left by the receding glaciers. The Rum River was the main drainage route for the county, supplied by tributaries Spencer Brook, Upper and Lower Stanchfield Creeks, and Cedar Creek. As years passed, a dense forest covered the land. Red and white oak, white birch, sugar maple, basswood, elm, tamarack, cherry and wild plum are among the trees which took root. Native Americans likely immigrated north through the Mississippi Valley, and projectile points and stone hammers dating back to perhaps 5,000 B.C. were found near Spring Lake and Lake Francis. The first white explorers to step foot in Isanti County were probably Radisson and Grossliers in 1655 and 1659, and Father Hennepin in 1680. Four tribes of Sioux inhabited this area, known as the Santee, Isanyati or Isantees (“isan” in Sioux means “knife”). Maple sugar and cranberry-filled marshes were abundant, as were game and fish. The Santees also planted a variety of vegetables. In the mid 1700s, the Ojibway (Anishinabe) moved into the area, pushed westward by other natives and white set-
tlers. Armed with muskets, they drove the Santees to the west and south, settling into the county with their wigwams after decisive battles were won along the shores of Mille Lacs Lake. As late as 1839 north of Anoka, one last victory assured Ojibway dominance of the area. Lumber rush leads to white settlement In 1847, lumber cruiser Daniel Stanchfield traversed the Rum, locating a huge stand of white pine four miles northeast of Cambridge. His reports of unlimited timber brought lumbermen from his native state of Maine and other Eastern states. These New Englanders named most of the towns and townships after the places they left behind: Cambridge, Athens, Oxford, Stanford and Spring Vale. Spencer Brook was named for Judge Spencer, who located a hunters’ camp at the outlet of Blue Lake around 1854. Elbridge G. Clough and Ben McKenzie settled in Spencer Brook in 1857 as the thriving community took on a New England air. Clough’s son, David, would later become the president of the State Agricultural Society, a state senator and the 13th governor of Minnesota. In October 1856, the city of Cambridge was first platted. On Feb. 13, 1857 Isanti County was officially separated from Ramsey County and was organized as a government unit. Comprising the first Board of Commissioners were E.G. Clough, Oscar Smith and Hugh Wylie. George L. Henderson was the first sheriff. Cambridge was designated the county seat, and the U.S. Land Office was moved there from Stillwater in 1858.

Recycling made easy in Isanti County Keeping a separate container for empty pop cans may seem inconvenient, and old newspapers stack up in a hurry. But considering that Americans throw away enough aluminum in three months to rebuild the nation’s entire commercial fleet of airplanes, and if we recycled all the newspapers printed in the country on a typical Sunday we could save 550,000 trees, maybe it’s time to start making an effort. About 80 percent of the things Americans throw away are recyclable, but with a little know-how it really is easy being green. To make it a little easier, East Central Sanitation offers single-sort recycling, meaning customers no longer have to separate different materials before setting them out for pickup. And speaking of pickup, curbside pickup of recycling is included with ECS garbage service. You can also drop off your recycling free of charge on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon if
you are not currently signed up for garbage service. ECS was founded in 1969 and has been taking care of the region’s recycling needs for the past 20 years. ECS, which is based in Cambridge, is licensed to provide service to all of Isanti County, as well as parts of Chisago, Kanabec, Pine, Sherburne and Anoka counties. ECS handles all the usual recyclables like tin and aluminum cans, newspapers, junk mail, cardboard, glass and plastic bottles, as well as special requests like tires and appliances. For questions about materials and pickup, call East Central Sanitation at 763-689-2171. The drop-off site for recycling is located at 225 McKinley St N in Cambridge. If you have questions about disposing of hazardous materials, oils and paints, call the Isanti County Zoning Office at 763-689-5165.

Cambridge Medical Center expansion project to increase confidentiality and operation efficiency
Dennis Doran, president of Cambridge Medical Center, and Jon Ward, district director for Allina Hospitals & Clinics, are excited about the Emergency Room expansion project. The new ER is expected to open for operations in September. Photos by Rachel Kytonen
Rachel Kytonen Isanti County News Cambridge Medical Center’s emergency room was built to accommodate 8,400 patients a year. That number was surpassed over 10 years ago, and currently the ER serves more than 14,500 patients annually. In September, Cambridge Medical Center broke ground for a new $10.5 million emergency room expansion and chemotherapy remodel. The new construction will include 15,000 square feet of new space that will be added to the medical center, adjacent to the current ER, and 1,000 square feet of existing space will also be remodeled. The new facility will transform the delivery of emergency care at Cambridge Medical Center through advanced technology, improved patient privacy and confidentiality, and patient-centered emergency medical care to meet the needs of patients both now and in the future. General construction for the expansion will be completed by mid-July, and the new ER is expected to open for operations in September. Features of the project include: • 21 patient treatment rooms—all private 13 exam/treatment rooms designed to prevent cross-infection and cross contamination 4 trauma/cardiac rooms to stabilize and treat critically ill patients 4 secure, separate mental health rooms for improved patient safety. • A decontamination room for instances of biologic, chemical or radiation exposure • Open nursing station that allows staff to see all patient care areas • State-of-the-art technology and patient care equipment • Individual patient registration area for increased confidentiality • Flat screen televisions in patient rooms • Quiet, calm healing environment • Private family consultation room
• Large ambulance bay for 3 ambulances • A new Short Stay Services entrance, reception desk and lobby will be added. • Four new chemotherapy/infusion therapy suites will replace the current therapy rooms. Dennis Doran, president of Cambridge Medical Center, noted the general contractor on the project, Kraus Anderson, has done a great job, as well as BWBR Architects. Doran explained Allina Hospitals & Clinics used as many local contractors as possible for the project. Doran said everyone at CMC is excited for the completion of the expansion. “There is much excitement surrounding this project with all of our physicians and nurses,” Doran said. “Our Board of Directors are also happy about this. We are very proud of this project, and are happy with the progress we have made so far.” Jon Ward, district director for Allina Hospitals & Clinics, said the overall goal of the project is to offer a state-of-the-art facility. “This expansion project will really improve our work efficiency,” Ward said. “We already have great doctors and nurses at Cambridge Medical Center, but this will help them do their jobs better, and more efficiently. This project was driven by the need for better patient confidentiality and better overall efficiency for operations.” Ward feels this project will serve the patients better. “Hopefully when our patients come in they will feel more comfortable due to the privacy they will now have,” Ward said. Doran and Ward would like to thank CMC’s patients and staff for all their patience during the construction. During the construction, the Short Stay Services entrance has been closed. Patients coming for short stay surgeries or chemotherapy/infusion therapy need to use the main hospital entrance during construction. Parking spaces have been reserved in the main hospital parking lot for short stay/chemo patients. Allina Hospitals & Clinics is funding the majority of the project. CMC will fund $1 million, and the CMC Foundation is heading up a $1 million Capital Campaign to help cover that cost. Doran said through the generosity of the community and others, about $500,000 has been raised. Donations of all amounts are appreciated and can be mailed directly to the Cambridge Medical Center Foundation. Naming and commemorative giving opportunities are available. For more information on the Capital Campaign, call 763-6889393.
The new Emergency Room at Cambridge Medical Center will offer 21 private patient treatment rooms.

Hunting and Fishing in Isanti County
To many life-long residents, Isanti County has that “God’s Country” feel to it– a little mix of everything while situated not far from the metro area. There’s farms, woods, swamp lands and waterways across the acres. That mix helps foster a strong number of outdoorsmen who call Isanti County home. Fishing First off, anglers should be aware of the Rum River which courses throughout Isanti County. The Rum has an excellent source in Lake Mille Lacs, and there are many miles of tree-lined waterways for boaters or canoers to enjoy, along with several ramp and carry-in accesses. Primary fishing targets on the Rum are walleyes, northern pike, smallmouth, panfish and the occasional musky. Bald eagle sightings are a bonus! Isanti County river rats are not confined just to the Rum. Just over the county’s north border is the Snake River– another excellent fishery– and a short truck ride to the east is the wild & scenic St. Croix River. The lakes of Isanti County are also gorgeous resources. In the west-central side sits the county’s largest lake– Green Lake at 832 acres. The lake has a maximum depth of 28 feet and water clarity of five feet. Green is managed for walleye and northern pike. It also has a high quality population of largemouth bass. Adjacent neighbor to Green is Spectacle Lake– 224 acres of the clearest water around and a magnet for swimmers. Spectacle is also on a walleye-stocking program. Much of the mid-size to smaller lakes in Isanti County are panfish producers with the bonus of being decent largemouth bass stops. Little Stanchfield, west of Grandy, is a 138-acre backwater of the Rum River which can get hot on crappies or northerns. Blue Lake in the southwest corner is a 309-acre lake known for
Page 59
intermittent nice year-classes of crappies. Sister lakes Lake Skogman and Lake Fannie on the east side also give up crappies regularly with the occasional big bucket-mouth found in the pads and weed edges. A couple of gems off the beaten track in the northwest part of the county are 212-acre Lory Lake and 220-acre Lewis Lake – both which can hold some of the feistiest bluegills in the area. Hunting Isanti County, because of its healthy game populations and rural terrain, contains many resident hunters, and its proximity to the Twin Cities makes it a convenient destination for out-oftown hunters, as well. Upland bird hunting in Isanti County includes Eastern wild turkey, ringnecked pheasant, ruffed grouse, woodcock and mourning dove, and waterfowl opportunities feature rail, snipe, geese and ducks. As far as big game, the county contains black bears and plenty of white-tailed deer, and in the furbearing category there are raccoons, minks, fox (red and gray), coyotes, beavers, otters, bobcats and fishers. According to the DNR, the majority of hunting in the county takes place on private property because they contain the greatest proportional share of wildlife habitat. However, the Wildlife Management Areas of Isanti County also experience plenty of traffic during all hunting seasons. One of the newest WMA’s is the Becklin Family Park & WMA which caters to turkey and deer hunts for disabled outdoorsmen. For more information about WMAs and lakes, laws and regulations and places to buy hunting and fishing licenses, call the Cambridge Area Wildlife Office at 763-689-7104 or go online to www.dnr.state.mn.us.

East Central Minnesota Chorale
The East Central Minnesota Chorale is a civic choir representing more than 10 East Central Minnesota communities. Their mission: To bring fine choral music, performed at a high artistic level, to East Central Minnesota. Join the Chorale The Chorale welcomes all capable singers who love the challenge of fine quality choral music. Adults of all ages, young and older, sing in the chorale. If you are interested in becoming a chorale member please contact: Chorale director, Mark Potvin at ecmcdirector@gmail.com. Rehearsals are held September through early May on Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Cambridge Lutheran Church, 621 Old North Main Street in Cambridge. History David Clarke founded the East Central Minnesota Chorale in 1980. Clarke was choral director at Cambridge High School, and after leaving Cambridge, became director of music at Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina. Dr. Dennis Port, now the conductor of the Bethel University Choir, also served as director for a few years. In the spring of 2007, David Clarke retired as director of the chorale. Mark Potvin, Choral Director at Princeton High School, accepted the position of music director of the Chorale in September 2007. Throughout the years the Chorale performed in several cities in East Central Minnesota, and the Twin Cities. They also took regional tours, performing in Duluth, Grand Forks, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Rochester, Marshall, and other Minnesota towns. The Chorale performed at the state convention of the American Choral Directors Association, as well as the

ACDA regional convention in Lincoln, Nebraska. Over 150 East Central Minnesota residents have been members of the Chorale. Performances The chorale repertoire includes everything from classical Renaissance to Contemporary styles, including classic choral selections, oratorios, folk songs and spirituals, as well as Broadway and pops arrangements. In recent years, the Chorale has invited local high school choirs to join them in a Major Works/Scholarship concert, performed with orchestra and professional soloists. The concerts provide a unique experience for area high school singers. The Chorale annually awards two vocal music scholarships at this concert. The concert season typically includes 3-4 Christmas Concerts, the February Scholarship Concert, and 2 Spring Concerts. Occasionally there are additional special event concerts scheduled as well. Unum Vox, high school honor choir In 2009 the East Central MN Chorale launched a project for regional high school students. “Unum Vox” (one voice) is an elite honor choir designed to enrich the typical high school choir experience by allowing students from various schools to excel in a common pursuit of quality singing at the highest possible level. Open to 10-12 grade choral students, auditions for Unum Vox are held in May and June. Unum Vox rehearses from 6-8 pm on Sunday evenings at the Cambridge Lutheran Church in Cambridge. They usually perform in concert with the East Central MN Chorale. Mark Potvin also is the director of this choir.

Isanti County Historical Society When it comes to the history of Isanti County, are you smarter than your fifth grader? Don’t take it too hard if it turns out she is better versed in the subject than you— chances will be she had a chance to attend “Old Time School,” at the West Riverside School. This experience is offered five weeks out of every year to students from the first to eighth grades and takes place at a historical country school preserved by the Isanti County Historical Society. Originally founded in 1965, the mission of the Isanti County Historical Society is to preserve and promote the history of Isanti County. After nearly four decades as an itinerant organization, the Historical Society finally settled in the Heritage Center in the northwest corner of the Isanti County Fairgrounds in 2003. However, after 9 years the Heritage Center was totally destroyed by an arson fire on July 8, 2011 and the organization was forced to again relocate and regroup. It has been estimated that 80% of all archives and artifacts were lost, as well as the entire building and its offices, community room and kitchen. At this time, the Isanti County Historical Society is beginning the task of processing all historical items that were salvaged from the fire, both freeze-dried and handdried. Through the dedication of board, staff, members, and volunteers and historical aficionados, a new society will emerge and move forward in the 21st century. Embracing technology, ICHS plans to host a resource center and library, beginning with salvaged archives, family histories, and documents containing the history of the early days of the county. Executive Director Kathy McCully envisions a proac

tive organization working with individuals, organizations, and families to collect and share new stories, photos and family histories not only through the library, but on-line, and through living history programs such as Old Time School and Swedish Language and Culture Camp. In addition to the West Riverside School, ICHS collaborates with Isanti County to maintain Spencer Brook School and Historic St. John’s Lutheran Church, both of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. If you are determined to outwit your prideful progeny in the future, you can get involved with the Isanti County Historical Society and learn for yourself. Memberships start at $20, and volunteers of all skills and abilities are always welcome. For more information, call 763-689-4229 or visit www.ichs.ws.
