Bombers aim to defend Great River title Braham 2011 records: 13-5 overall, 11-1 Great River Conference (1st place), Lost in second round 5A playoffs. Top returners: SRS Cory Ambrose (P/ SS), Nick Hammond (1B/P), Kevin Strelow (2B), JRS Sam Stigen (C/P), Casey Grell (CF/P). Team depth: SRS Jerry Griggs (3B), Jamin Storlie (IF/OF), Tyler Vaughan (OF), Nick Mattson (OF). The Bombers have a solid core of returners to take on the defense of their 2011 Great River title. Cory Ambrose is the leader on the mound, and he also was an offensive igniter in the lead-off spot last spring. He will take over SS when not throwing, giving Braham a veteran infield with Nick Hammond,
Kevin Strelow and Sam Stigen behind the plate. Casey Grell showed nice range in CF and also had several clutch hits in the No. 9 slot in the order. Tyler Vaughan brings back his athletic skills to the outfield after being locked into AAU hoops the last several springs. “Last year we were pretty set at our positions; this year we’re trying to put nine out there with a few unknowns, trying to fill the holes made from our seven graduates,” said Bomber head coach Aitor Leniz, who like all the spring coaches, appreciated the early chance for outdoor practices from the onset. His Bombers are ranked 9th in the Class A pre-season poll. Great River Conference Outlook: East Central was hot on the Bombers’
heels last season, but the Eagles lost much to graduation, too. Coach Leniz sees Ogilvie helped out by a strong youth program, and Hinckley-Finlayson was a young team in 2011 which should be much improved. Aitkin usually sneaks in with a competitive team each spring, too– placing 3rd in the GRC last season. Section 5A Outlook: Eden ValleyWatkins out of 5A is the two-time defending State champ in Class A– going 50-3 over those two seasons. The Eagles are righfully ranked No. 1 to start ‘12. Section runner-up Browerville could also be a team to watch this spring, along with Legacy Christian who was the team that clipped the Bombers in the east subsections last year.
Braham Baseball 2012 (Row 1, l-r): Avery Nystel, Richard Hanson, Sonny Foote, Noah Bone, Jacob Ambrose, Drake Held, Ryan Riesing, Shane Parson, Allen Ramstad, (Row 2) Jake Stello, Trent Anderson, Tyler Stromlund, Nathan Scott, Jordan Bone, John Clemes, Chris Pinatro, Tristan Marthaler, Eric Jones, (Row 3) Alex Sutton, Jamin Storlie, Casey Grell, Sam Stigen, Cory Ambrose, Nick Hammond, Tyler Vaughan, Jerry Griggs, Nick Mattson, Kevin Strelow.

Top returners: SRS Taylor Bowker (SS), Katie McCann (C), Kate Hammero (P), JRS Amanda Hanson (1B), Kendall Sandberg (3B), Leah Ponting (OF), Jessica Golden (OF/P), Hannah Thiry (OF), Erica Epsen (OF). Team depth: SRS Nicole Bielick (OF), Ronnie Risch (P), SO Josie Potrament. Kate Hammero takes over on the rubber from three-year varsity pitcher Bailey Bakken, bringing good control and a fighting attitude. She will have a strong defense with the entire outfield back, along with Taylor Bowker, Amanda Hanson and Kendall Sandberg providing strong gloves in the
infield. Katie McCann is back behind the plate where she brings savvy leadership at both catcher and the lead-off spot in the batting lineup. “We have several infielders and outfielders returning this season, so we are expecting a very solid defense. Our hitting should be improved if we approach every at bat with a mission and with confidence. While our pitching staff is a little inexperienced at the varsity level, they have been working hard in the off-season on a good mix and location,” said Bluejacket head coach David Hanson. Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: The conference should be even tighter than last year’s grinder since the two weakest teams– Princeton and Zimmerman– moved off to the Granite Ridge. The Bluejackets will have to come out of the gate
fast and aggressively to stick in the race. “Buffalo will be a favorite with their junior ace pitcher. All of the other teams in the conference played pretty young last year, so we are expecting everyone to be very competitive,” said Coach Hanson. Big Lake also has its tough pitcher returning. Section 7AAA Outlook: Forest Lake will be gunning for a fifth-straight State trip after finishing as the Class AAA runners-up in 2011. The Rangers return seven starters and 13 total varsity members for Coach Angie Ryan’s club. Anoka, who upset C-I in the opening round, went on to finish as 7AAA runners-up, and the Tornadoes should be in shape to challenge again with their young squad. St. Francis is another team to keep an eye on this spring.

ence pay off when they doubled their victory count last spring, with pitchers Alex Moses and Anthony Lecceardone leading in innings. Alex Lecceardone, Grant Taylor, Jack Swenson and Jake Bergman are all back for a skilled infield. Tall Peter Maring is back to range in the outfield, with Charlie Swenson returning in left. “It think our pitching and defense are looking pretty good in our early practices,” said Coach Moses. “We have experienced bats on our offense, but we need to improve with our aggressiveness at the plate to score more runs this season. One of the biggest factors is we
can’t have the number of injuries which challenged us throughout last season.” The Warriors have a good home schedule with eight games stacked up this season. The big news for 2012 is Coach Moses worked with Christian Athletic squads and other non-affiliated teams to finally put together an end-ofseason tournament which will be a great carrot for the CCS boys. CAL rival Christian Life will host the tourney this year at its Farmington location. Coach Moses also expects good rivalries to continue between his Warriors and Liberty Classical and Rosemount Baptist.

Mikayla brings back experience and great leadership skills behind the plate, and we have a veteran pitcher in Annie KinCannon” said Warrior head coach Kim Aleckson. “With our limited numbers, all members will get more game experience this season. I see us as a hard-working team which will try to take that next step up.” The Warriors, like CCS Baseball, will get an end-of-season Christian Athletic League tourney for the first spring to test how far they’ve developed as players. That tourney will be hosted by Christian Life on May 19. Prior to that, the CCS girls continue to play their home games at North Isanti Baptist’s nice country field.

Team depth: JR Aaron Allen, FR Nate Cox The Bluejackets have a strong foundation to climb in the standings this season. Along with the conference meets, the team will gain experience at top-level events such as the Blaine TPC Invite, Coon Rapids Invite, Elk River Invite and the two-day invites at Pequot Lakes and Grand Rapids. “Matt Swanson was All-Conference last season, and he will be the key this season to our team shooting low scores. Jared Knutson has been a consistent golfer the past couple of years, earning Honorable Mention AC last season. Those two golfers along with Reggie Martin, Jonah Poppen and Austin Galligan will be looked upon for leadership. Freshman Nate Cox has been striking the ball well in the early going, as well,” said Bluejacket head coach Mike Hennen. Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: Rogers is on a long title-run in the M-8 and appears to lose no steam this spring. “Rogers will have an unbelievable team again as they come off of a Class AAA State championship. They return four golfers from last year’s team, including SRS Corey Muenzhuber and Jordan Rykal who finished tied for 10th at State. The rest of us will be battling for 2nd place,” projected Coach Hennen. Section 7AAA Outlook: Defending section champ Elk River has four-of-six varsity starters back to begin the season as the favorite. 2011 runner-up Forest Lake boasts JR Max Kelly, the reigning ‘AAA’ individual champ. Andover is another tough squad for C-I to overcome at the annual gathering on Hinckley’s Grand National GC layout.

C-I Girls coming out strong in field events Cambridge-Isanti 2011 records: 3rd place Mississippi 8 Conference Finals, 6th place Section 7AA Finals. Top returners: SRS Erica Young (sprinter, relays & long jump), Emily Santiago-Holboy (shot put & discus), Adelle Nelson (pole vault), Michelle Ziebarth (sprints), Alex Nelson (middistance), JRS Paige Muehlhauser (middistance & sprints), Emily Moore (middistance), Kylie Baas (high jump, relays & long jump), Danielle Page (hurdles & triple jump), Taylor Oullette (distance), SO Carlynn Galeazzi (relays, long jump & sprints), FR Lily Porta (sprints, long jump & relays). Team depth: FR Thessa Daniels (sprints), Melyssa Varsoke (hurdles), Anna Nelson (pole vault), Emily Baker (shot put). The Bluejackets are finding their way in the early going, led by the field events. Emily Santiago-Holboy is throwing well in the shot put and discus, and Kylie Baas is back as a top high jumper.
Lily Porta is rising in the long & triple jumps, along with Erica Young who also has been the team’s leading sprinter. Adelle Nelson has posted two 1st places in the pole vault already. Michelle Ziebarth, Carlynn Galeazzi and Thessa Daniels bolster the sprint talent. Melyssa Varsoke has been the leader in C-I’s traditionally-tough hurdle events. “We have a large number of girl’s out for track this spring and are hopeful that the strong numbers will payoff. We have several returning letter-winners who are strong in several events. Our depth will be our strength this season,” said new C-I girls head coach Linda Droubie. Coach Droubie, who has taught and coached at CIHS for 13 years, is a graduate of Austin H.S. where she excelled in track & field, volleyball and basketball. In T & F, she was an All-Conference performer and State qualifier. Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: Monticello had a dominating M-8 Finals last spring to defend its conference title. “Monticello looks to
be returning place-winners in almost every event, including the top-3 in both the mile and two mile, the top-2 in the 400, and the top-2 in the 800. With that kind of talent returning, they should be tough to beat and maybe even get close to. The true battle will be for the next three-to-five spots with strong teams in Buffalo, STMA and up-and-coming Big Lake. C-I looks to be in this fight, as well, returning two M-8 champs in Kylie Baas (high jump) and Emily Santiago-Holboy (shot),” analyzed Coach Droubie. Section 7AA Outlook: Forecast Coach Droubie, “The teams that will most likely be at the top again are Forest Lake, Andover, defending champ Elk River and Grand Rapids. All return substantial talent in multiple events with younger athletes looking to step up. C-I will take a hit with 72% of last year’s points lost to graduation (ie. The Bluejackets boast stars and workman-like athletes capable of putting up points this season. Aaron Kordiak shines brightest so far by sprinting to 2nd in both the 100 and 400 at last week’s True Team. Jumping veterans Jordan and Forrest Kalk are capable of having huge multievent showings each week out. Trevor Galligan is an M-8 contender in the 800 (3rd last year). The throwers also had a strong day at the C-I True Team with Adam Muehlhauser, Darren DeBaere and Clint Treichel all finishing top-10 in the shot put, followed by Jeremy Ham, Muehlhauser, DeBaere and Treichel placing in the top-8 in the discus. Patrick Jones and Ben Williams need a strong pole vault season in an event hit particularly hard through graduation. “We should have a very balanced team. Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: Buffalo continued its strong T & F tradition by defending its conference championship last spring before going on to place 8th at Class AA State. Great River Conference Outlook: Rush City is the two-time GRC defending champion after rolling to a 26-point win over runner-up Hinckley-Finlayson at last spring’s outdoor finals. The Tigers held off a good challenge from Mille Lacs (Isle/ Onamia) to win last week’s Ogilvie Invite.
the 300 hurdles. Rachel Eskuri is off to a good start in distance events, winning the 1600 and placing 2nd in the 3200 at last week’s Ogilvie Invite. Jessica Westman and Sammy Patterson also add distance depth off last fall’s cross country team. Jaclyn Hollenkamp is Braham’s leading sprinter, and Jenna Winter adds depth in the 800, high jump and pole vault. Athletes out for track for the first time are Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (sprints/throwing events) and Kayla Nickles (sprints). “We aim to have our girls earn a few individual conference championships and honorable mention awards, along with advancing four-to-six girls to sections out of a tough subsection,” said Bomber head coach Joe Rajkowski.
Section 5A Outlook: St. Cloud Cathedral is the defending 5A girls champ, led by 2011 3200-meter State champ JR Elena Danielson. Annandale and Foley were two more 5A teams which placed in the top-15 at the Class A State meet last June.

Dillon Arispe is adding strong placings in the 110 hurdles and 800, and Zach Dahlman is improving in the 400 and triple & long jumps. Thomas Warner is putting up the Bombers’ best distance times, and Luke Whitehead adds sprinting experience. Marshall Sward (sprints) and Cameron Braund (throwing events) are strong athletes competing their first year in track. “Having fun, staying healthy and keep improving are the keys to success for both track squads,” said Bomber head coach Joe Rajkowski. “We are challenged with low numbers again which makes it tough to fill all events, especially the relay teams.” Great River Conference Outlook: Pine City unseated Rush City as the GRC champs last season, but the Tigers out-pointed the Dragons at last week’s Ogilvie Invite. Bluejackets chasing Bison in Mississippi 8 Cambridge-Isanti 2011 records: 9-7 Mississippi 8 Conference (4th place), 1210 overall, lost in second round Section 7AAA playoffs. The Bluejackets take to the diamond
with a group which returns with much experience from both the 2011 high school season and the summer Legion ball campaign. Cole Bakke, with his strong fastball/slider mix, will aim to repeat his 7-0, 1.43 ERA season from a year ago. Clayton Jennissen and Tom Selz return as athletic outfielders who have their pitchers’ back, and Matt Ziebarth brings back a great contact-hitting bat. Ryan Miller is back for a third varsity season for C-I with his crafty pitching mix. The Jackets can hit, but they need to step it up with their gloves this spring. “With our experience and overall team speed, our defense should be a strength of the program,” said Bluejacket head coach Todd Smrekar.
Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: Buffalo rose to the top of the M-8 heap last spring after going 12-4 in conference battles and returns an athletic squad in 2012. Coach Smrekar also foresees 2010 champ and last year runner-up St. Michael-Albertville fielding another balanced team for his Jackets to chase. Section 7AAA Outlook: Forest Lake is the three-time defending champ in the section after defeating St. Francis in the ‘11 title game. The Rangers welcome new head coach Tal Gravelle and are ranked 6th in the Class AAA pre-season poll. Andover with its strong pitching and St. Francis are two more top 7AAA contenders this spring.

The Rangers are not as balanced as last season which could open the door for new member Elk River to climb to the top.
