Bombers defend titles with younger crew

Braund, FR G John Larson, 6’3” F Connor Tschumper, G Cris Olson Braham takes on a very new look after graduating multi-season players the past two years, including recordbreaker Tyler Vaughan and center Cameron Braund moving on to college teams off last season’s section championship squad. Hollenkamp

(9.6 ppg, 40 three-pointers) and Dahlman (5.6 ppg, 110 rebounds) are called upon to shore up the middle and rebound hard each night. Stigen nailed 46 three-pointers and will help lead the defense at guard. Larson, coming off a season learning leadership as the Braham football varsity quarterback, takes over point from Vaughan. R. Braund adds athleticism in the backcourt.

Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Bob Vaughan– “With our limited numbers in the upper grades, we will be playing freshmen this season. We are very skilled for being so young. The boys will work hard to maintain our winning tradition.”

Great River and Section 7AA Outlooks: Braham is on a 42-game winning streak in the Great River Conference and will be the favorites until another team can snap that run. Coach Vaughan foresees Hinckley, Rush City and Aitkin to field competitive squads this season.

In Section 7AA, Coach Vaughan calls last year’s runner-up Esko to be the heavy favorite when March rolls around. The Eskomos have their three lanky junior shooters back who caused fits in the ‘12 section finals.

Mora, who Braham travels to Dec. 7, and Moose Lake-Willow River also have athletes who could make a difference in the section brackets.

The Vanderbilt recruit also contributed 360 rebounds, 185 steals and 158 assists.

Kayla Nickles (10.0 ppg, 52 three-pointers, 137 reb., 118 asst) is the other returning starter and strong link to the 2011 State champion team.

Dani Braund (4.2 ppg, 105 reb., 26 steals) came up big for the Bombers with strong middle defense in the playoff run last year.

talent lost through graduation, including 1,000-plus point scorer Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow.

Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Tim Malone– “We hope to be competitive in both Section 7AA and in the Great River Conference this season. We will be shorter and faster than we have ever been.”

Great River and Section 7AA Outlooks: The Bombers head into the 2013 season on a 48-game winning streak in the Great River Conference. Isle, who gave Braham two good challenges last year, is Coach Malone’s pick as the top contender. He also sees Aitkin making great im-

provements on the court this year.

In Section 7AA, Esko begins the season ranked 5th in Class AA, while Braham is ranked 7th.

Coach Malone–“Esko is stacked with a very solid senior class.” At the top off that group is 6’8” shotblocking C Savanna Trapp (signed with UCLA) and very swift G Marissa Shady who placed 5th at the State Cross Country Meet this autumn. The Eskomos would love another crack at the Bombers after falling to them the past three 7AA championship games.

The Rush City-Braham wrestlers graduated just three wrestlers from the Section 7AA Individual

tourney lineup which wrapped up last season.

With the mix of the returners and many new faces signed on to the program, the Tigers have the look of a stronger lineup for the 2013 campaign.

Positives for 2013 season: Coach Jake Shockman– “With 43 kids out, we’re going to be able to fill spots that in the past we struggled to fill. We have close to two lineups this year which will allow us to move and jockey for positions. It’s nice to see the hard work (coaches) Josh, Dan and I have put in paying off with more interest.

Plus, our Braham Warriors youth wrestling club which starts this month has large numbers of kids signed up, too.”

The Tigers opened the season with a 4th-place showing at their own Rush City Invite on Saturday.

Isaiah Johnson (171) and

Logan Johnson (195) both placed 2nd in the invite which was won by 2012 Class A runner-up Kimball (totaling six 1st places).

Finishing 3rd at the Invite with wins were James Kelling (145), Dan Johnson (152) and Jacob Lynch (220). Placing 4th for the Tigers were Dylan Mielke (113) and Bryce Bodell (126). Adding 5th-place wins were Dalton Mielke (106), Bryce Lanhart (138) and Blaine Blazek (160).

Great River and Section 7AA Outlooks: Aitkin and Mille Lacs finished 1st-2nd at last year’s GRC Finals tourney. Coach Shockman predicts the Gobblers and

Raiders to be the front-runners again. Coach Shockman– “But we are getting closer to those teams, and I think we can give them a tight match once we get our lineup solidified. We have high expectations for this year, and we like how future wrestling years could look, too.”

In Section 7AA, Milaca is the reigning champ who finished as the Class AA consolation champs last March. The Wolves, ranked 6th in the pre-season poll, will have to get past strong contention from the likes of Grand Rapids and Hibbing, along with the rest of the section crew.

Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Brian Bergman– “The team has looked very good in practices so far. I am encouraged with how well the new girls are fitting in. Everyone is contributing this year, and we will have a very deep bench. It is also nice to have so many girls that have a lot of varsity experience. The addition of 5’11” Karly Wiek and the growth of 5’10” Kristin Bergman gives us more

height to work with than we have had in the past two years, so it will be fun to combine some height with our speed.

“Our opener with St Francis got off to a slow start as the girls looked a little rusty in the first half.

We were able to manage a 23-13 lead at the half. Our play picked up quite a bit in the second half, and we we able to win convincingly 46-22. I was very happy to see how well everyone contributed in this game.

The scoring was pretty evenly spread out: Shelby led with 10 points, Karly Wiek had 7, and we got 6 points each from Jerusalem, Emily and Seble. Kellie added 5, points, with Kristin (4) and Caitlin (2)

also scoring. Overall, not a bad game for our first one of the year.”

Christian Athletic League Outlook: Coach Bergman– “I expect the Rochester Area Home School Defenders to be the team to beat in CAL again this year.

They have always had a big height advantage over everyone in the league. This year, we have a little more height on our team, so I am hoping that will make a difference. Our goal will be to meet them in the championship again this year.”

The Warriors defeated the RAHS Defenders 48-38 at last weekend’s Coulee, WI tip-off tourney.

The Warrior boys basketball squad aims to keep the momentum rolling from the success several of the players enjoyed on the CAL champion soccer team this past fall.

Peter Maring brings his attacking style to anchor the middle for CCS. Josh Roble, Jake Bergman and Justin Roble are also returning starters, and Grant Taylor (last year’s sixth man) takes the place of graduated four-year starter Josiah Scheumann.

Anders Boyum moves into the sixth-man slot, and

Andrew Heidelberger and Alex Lecceardone provide more senior leadership on the court.

Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Jeff Bonkoski– “Our biggest strength is great team cohesiveness.

We have a strong group of juniors and seniors who know the system and play well together. The starting six guys are very hungry and focused. In our 65-20 opening win against St. Francis Christian, we played a great defensive

game. Plus we had only had one turnover in first half and played better than I expected.”

In the opener on the road, Maring led with 18 points, Josh Roble scored 11, and Justin Roble 10.

Adding 9 points each were Bergman and Taylor.

Christian Athletic League Outlook: Coach Bonkoski– “Rochester Area Home Schools (RAHS) will be our biggest challenge. We split last year during the regular season, then we lost

to them in the CAL semifinals. They match up very well with us and also have a strong group of juniors and seniors since they didn’t lose much from last year. Other teams that will be right there will be Immanuel Christian and Christian Life.”

At last weekend’s Coulee, WI tip-off tourney, the Warriors got in the first salvo on the RAHS Defenders in a 51-41 victory.

The Bluejackets are out to a 2-0 start on the strength of very solid team defense. Co-captain Brynn Liljander has paced the offense with 60 points total in the two wins, attacking the hoop well. Amanda

Hanson and Paige Muehlhauser bring savvy athleticism to their co-captain roles. Justine Larson, Lily Porta, Maria Vavra and Sydney Larkin are younger players who buy into the defensive scheme.

The C-I girls graduated six players off their 2012 roster, including 2,000-point scorer Whitney Olson and multi-season post players Natalie Larson and Emily Holboy.

Shelby Swanson and Alexa Wiese may be leaned on to help shore up the middle of the Jacket defense this season.

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAAA Outlooks: Buffalo is the four-time defending champ in the Mississippi 8 Conference, but Coach Ledahl sees St. MichaelAlbertville and Rogers returning very strong teams to chase this winter. Monticello also finished well last season, advancing to the Class AAA State tourney.

Forest Lake, Andover and Anoka return much of their teams to be the frontrunners in Section 7AAAA at the start of the season.

Defending section champ Duluth East is awaiting the return of 6’2” center Emily Lushine (knee injury). The Bluejackets will work hard to climb that next step after reaching the section championship game the past four winters.

Returning starters Hunter Vavra, Matt Swanson and Jake Johnson bring a physical presence back to their forward positions.

Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Mike McDonald– “Matt, Hunter and Jake are older, stronger, taller and wiser. Look for leadership from them. Kyle McDonald was the backup point last year and an occasional starter. He had a great offseason playing against elite AAU players and should use that expe-

rience to be a great leader in the backcourt. Nate Cox also was a key reserve for us last season with the ability to score from inside and out. Aaron Allen played valuable minutes as a reserve last season. Sam Thomas and Max Knowlton are ‘glue’ guys who can defend, get a lot of 50/50 balls, and make plays. We also look for others on our roster to step up and be ‘stars’ in their role. Bill Baumann brings his wealth of experience to the Bluejacket Basketball program after a Hall of Fame career as head coach at North Branch. He can only help us to be more successful. Jeff Salo, a former Bluejacket guard, is also now our JV coach, and

his mentorship will be a big plus, as well.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAAA Outlooks: St. Michael-Albertville and Rogers snapped Buffalo’s five-year run atop the Mississippi 8 last winter.

Coach McDonald– “Buffalo should be strong again in our conference with SRS Ethan Freer, Jason Senger, Peter Cassady and Austin Youngs returning.”

Coach McDonald predicts Section 7AAAA to be as balanced as its ever been with no real preseason favorite. Defending champ Duluth East graduated much of its scoring and playmaking.

The Bluejackets roll into a new season with a new look on the appara-

tus since they return only three athletes who competed at State last February: Morgan Urness, Hannah Haight and Tayla Fletcher.

Varsity positions are up for grabs for the mix of returners and new members in the gym.

Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Wendy Rooney– “It will be very exciting to see how many gymnasts rise to the challenge and step up to fill those spots.

We are a very young team, and the girls are very excited and motivated to prove they can continue the winning tradition of Bluejacket Gymnastics. We expect to show tremendous improvement from the start of the season to

the end. Beam should start out as one of our strongest events, but the other three will continue to improve dramatically as the season progresses.”

Last Saturday, the Bluejackets opened with a 3rdplace 134.3 at the Perham Jackie Mann Invite. Urness placed 6th in the AllAround and was 2nd on the Floor with a 9.2. Hannah Haight returned from her wrist injury to take 6th on the Bars (8.55) and 10th on the Beam (8.6). Kaeli Kortan was 7th on the Bars (8.5), and Abby Schlenker scored an 8.55 on the Floor.

The Yellowjackets, who finished 4th at Class A State last season, won their meet with a 137.0 total.

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Coach Wendy Rooney– “I am anticipating that defending champion Big Lake will be extremely strong in the Mississippi 8.

St. Francis and Centennial finished 2nd and 3rd at the Section 7AA last year and should have strong teams again this season. We are hosting sections this year and look forward to having a chance to defend our title in our own gym.”

Big Lake closed last season by taking 3rd in the Class A State Meet, led by this-year senior Courtney Jensen (5th on State Bars).

Parker Brown made his first State trip in Diving after placing 4th in the section. Darren Codner was 8th in 7AA in both the 50 and 100 Free-

styles. Cody Hemmelgarn added 9th-place points in 7AA Diving.

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Monticello swam to its fourth-straight Mississippi 8 title last season, then kept rolling to finish 2nd in Class A State. Coach Gotz figures the Magic and St. Michael-Albertville will be bringing back the most experience in the conference.

The Bluejackets are out to an 0-3 start to the season, recently running into swift Duluth teams East and Denfeld under firstyear coach Mark Kissner.

Early-season scoring has come from Collin Anderson (hat trick against Denfeld), Mitch Renstrom, Elliott Simon and Levi Miller.

Frank Maslow has logged most minutes in the net, with Tim Schultz backing at goaltender. Finnish exchange student Veeti Uuttera, “The Flying Finn,” adds speed up front. Renstrom, T.J. Pagel and Preston Simon are co-captains for the 2013 season.

Positives for 2013 season: Head Coach Mark Kissner– “We’ve been in our games so far. Now we just have to start playing three strong periods each night. To help that, we need to play sounder team defense– backchecking and hustling more.”

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Rogers won its thirdstraight Mississippi 8 crown last year, extending their winning streak in conference games to 21. The Royals, who advanced to the Section 5A championship before falling to Hermantown, should still be the team to beat in the M-8.

Duluth East reached State out of Section 7AA for the fourth straight year last winter and finished 29-2 as the Class AA consolation champions. The ‘Hounds are fast again.

Jumping out in the GRC Bombers shut down Tigers in opener

By Greg Hunt Braham continued its run of smothering play in the Great River Conference when its new-look boys basketball team rolled past visiting Rush City 79-39 in the Dec. 4 season-opener.

It took 1:30 into the game for the Bombers to get on the board when Shawn Hollenkamp took to the hole for a three-point play. The senior returning starter then finished off a steal for a 5-2 edge, and Braham picked up steam to create a 51-22 advantage heading into the locker room.

Dealing with a ton of talent graduated from last year’s team, Coach Bob Vaughan showed his young lineup of

freshmen contributors– but he always had at least two veterans on the floor with the kids in the half to ease the way into the 2013 season.

Returning starter junior Zach Dahlman hit back-toback field goals (one off an offensive board) to force an early Tiger timeout. Stigen then made a steal and fed freshman transfer Chris Olson for his first bucket in Braham. That began a stretch where the freshmen took over the scoring, which included Dahlman finding Connor Tschumper with a good feed.

Olson scored six more fast points includng knocking downing a three-pointer.

Tschumper finished off an Oboard and a good pass from freshman point John Larson to make it 27-14 Braham.

Returning to the floor, the

seniors took back over again when Dylan Altendorf drove for a bucket then popped consecutive ‘3’ attempts, sandwiched around four more points from Hollenkamp. Stigen’s steal and finish forced RC to call timeout again.

The Bombers had a nice punctuation mark to the half when Larson held control with 45 seconds to go, then he broke for the hoop and dished to Tschumper who finished off his 12th point of the half– very pretty.

The Bombers limited the Tigers to 17 second-half points while Hollenkamp, Altendorf, Tschumper and Olson all finished with doubledigit scoring in the victory.

Braham gets a good Section 7AA-preview test this Friday when they travel to Mora.

Senior guard Sam Stigen scored off a steal and racked up 5 assists in the first half alone when Braham began the 2013 campaign with a home win over Rush City.

C-I Wrestlers bolt out to 6-0 start Cambridge-Isanti’s new lineup attacked the mats for six wins in the wrestling squad’s opening action of the 2013 season.

At Friday’s White Bear Lake Duals, the Bluejackets began by thumping Virginia 84-0 with 12 falls and Mahtomedi 60-24. That set up the feature match between 3rd-ranked C-I and the 10thranked Bears.

Brady Kuntz stuck his 106 foe, and Travis Swanson got a late three-point nearfall to win 9-7, but White Bear later took a 17-10 lead. Nate Nassif began the Jacket rally with a 3-0 win at 145 which was followed by pins from Travis Holt at 152 and Codie Auren at 160.

The Bears’s 11-5 decision at 171 had them within 2320, but Cody Skog answered with a quick stick at 182. Dakota Johnson’s 3-0 decision at 195 and Kyle Chromy’s 7-1 win at 220 sealed the win.

Sweep of Wildcat Duals The Bluejackets defended their title at the Chisago Lakes Duals on Saturday which included defeating section-mate Blaine 55-16

and Mora 69-12. They also held off a young but skilled Kenyon-Wanamingo 36-28 in the semis, responding to a 24-6 deficit.

Against K-W, the Bluejackets swept the 145-170 matches with a Nassif 6-4 decision, a fall in 1:06 from Holt, a C.J. Schlictman decision and a Skog 16-0 tech fall. Johnson, Chromy and Derick DeMars cleaned up with a 5-0 decision, a 13-4 major and a thirdperiod pin.

Tony Nelson beats the Russian C-I Coach Neil Jennissen was excited to pass on the note about Bluejacket grad and top-ranked heavyweight Tony Nelson defeating No. 2 Alan Gelogaev 2-0 in Sunday’s action at the U of M. Unfortunately, it was 2nd-ranked Oklahoma State beating the top-ranked Gopher wrestlers 22-15.

CCS hoops teams 2nd at Coulee Tourney The Cambridge Christian basketball squads both went 2-1 to place 2nd at last weekend’s Coulee, Wisc. Invite.

In the process, both Warrior teams knocked off CAL rival Rochester Area Home Schools in semifinal matchups.

The CCS girls opened the tourney with a 47-34 win over Mountain Top Christian of Horicon, Wisc. Shelby Doble led with 13 points, Seble Doble scored 11, and Karly Wiek and Kellie Pedersen popped for 7 each.

In the Saturday noon semis, the Warriors jumped out to a 21-7 lead over RAHS en route to a 48-38 victory.

Kristin Bergman came back from a Game 1 knee injury to pace CCS with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Pedersen added 9 points, with both Shelby Doble and Wiek scoring 8.

The championship went to Hope Lutheran of Winona 5539 who hit seven three-pointers in the first half. Bergman nailed five ‘3s’ to finish with 19 points for CCS. • The Warrior boys began the Coulee with a 87-55 win over Mountain Top when Jake Bergman and Peter Maring led with 18 and 17 points, with Grant Taylor adding 14 and Anders Boyum scoring 9.

Braham Girls 75, Park Center 68 In front of the Breakdown Classic audience at Hopkins High Dec. 1, Becca Dahlman scored 43 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead in the defeat of the Pirates. Kayla Nickles scored 16 with 9 rebounds, Jaclyn Hollenkamp added 10 points and 8 rebounds, and Dani Braund scored 6.

C-I Girls B-Ball splits games The Bluejacket girls won their second game of the season by defeating 2012 Class AAA State entrant Chisago Lakes 66-51 Nov 29. Brynn Liljander led the attack with 25 points and 7 assists.

Paige Muehlhauser added 10 points, with Amanda Hanson and Lily Porta both scoring 8 against the Wildcats.

“Chisago led throughout much of the first half as their 6’5” junior gave us trouble. It took us awhile to figure out how to defend her, then we

went on a nice run to overcome the deficit,” described C-I Coach Jody Ledahl.

“Brynn played well again, setting up teammates. In the second half, our pressure started wearing them down, and we scored on a lot of breakaways.”

On Dec. 4, Section 7AAAA partner Forest Lake handed the C-I girls their first loss 6549, holding a 36-23 lead at the half. Liljander (19) and Muehlhauser (18) led the Jacket scorers again.

C-I Boys Hockey 10, North Branch 2 The Bluejackets got in the win column by defeating the host Vikings Dec. 4. Collin Anderson notched his secondstraight hat trick for C-I, scoring his first goal 46 seconds into the game. Jake Sylvester scored twice, with more Jacket goals came from Mike Nolt, Elliott Simon, Veeti Uuttera and Mitch Renstrom. Uuttera finished with 3 assists, with Anderson and Renstrom both passing for 2 assists. Tim Schultz made 20 saves for the win in goal.

Minneapolis 6, CIMPC Girls Hockey 2 Bluejacket girls hockey dropped a Dec. 4 road game

Jacket Boys Basketball falls twice Cambridge-Isanti boys basketball opened the season 0-2 after losses to two Section 7AAAA partners. In the Dec. 1 opener, visiting St. Francis logged a 72-44 victory with a solid advantage on the boards. Kyle McDonald scored 15 points for the Bluejackets. Matt Swanson added 8 points and 6 rebounds, with 7 points coming from both Aaron Allen and Jake Johnson.

On Dec. 4, host Forest Lake limited the Jackets to 14 first-half points, and kept going to win 61-39.

Aitkin 52, RC-B Wrestling 27 The defending GRC champion Gobblers opened the conference dual season with a road win at Rush City Dec. 4, creating a 46-6 lead after the 160 match. Dylan Mielke (113), Isaiah Johnson (170), Logan Johnson (195) and Chase Grant (285) all recorded Tiger pins.

Becca Dahlman eclipsed the 4,000-point mark of her Braham Girls Basketball career when she scored 43 points in the win over Park Center at Saturday’s Breakdown Tip-Off Classic. Becca hit 19of-19 at the line and added 20 rebounds and 3 assists against the Pirates. She is now 75 points away from Kevin Noreen’s all-time mark for any Minnesota high school basketball player.

Travis Swanson bolted out to a great start for Bluejacket Wrestling after opening weekend. Travis went 6-0 with 4 falls at 126 lbs. to help the Bluejackets sweep its six matches at White Bear Lake and Chisago Lakes. Coach Jennissen describes Travis as “raw-bone tough!”

Despite an injury which limited her action in Game 1, Kristin Bergman still led Warrior Girls Basketball with 33 points and 22 rebounds when the team placed 2nd at the Coulee Invite last weekend. Kristin, named to the All-Tourney team, adds a spark to the Warriors and is already showing as a freshman she has the ability to carry the team when needed.
