Striving to defend State title 2011 Braham Girls Basketball records: 16-0 Great River Conference (1st place), 31-2 overall, Class AA State Champions 2012 Lineup: Guards– Becca Dahlman, Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow, Austyn Eng, Becca Cuda Forwards– Kayla Nickles, Amanda Sybrant, Dani Braund, Caitlin Richmond Positives for 2012 season: The Bombers open the season ranked 2nd in Class AA with a strong core of returners from last season’s championship campaign. Providence Academy, who Braham beat in the State semis last year, begins as No. 1 with its returning depth and height. JR guard Becca Dahlman continues her onslaught of the record books by averaging 38.0 ppg in the team’s three wins this season. The hoop attacker and strong defender needs 85 points to reach the 3,000-point mark of her career. SR Kelsey SorensonGiffrow brings back her intense playing style and clutch shooting abilities, adding 14.7 ppg this season. This-year starters SR guard Austyn Eng and JR guard Kayla Nickles played big off the bench during the Bombers’ championship run last year. Forwards SR Amanda Sybrant, JR Dani Braund, and FR Caitlin Richmond will need to fortify the middle of the defense which was hit hard by graduation. Head Coach Tim Malone: “We know and understand the target on our back has grown. We have had a good offseason and look forward to the challenges ahead.

Especially early on, it will be all about team chemistry. We have people stepping up into new roles, and the quicker we get the chemistry working, the better it will be. We will be battle-tested early with games against Maranatha, Albany, Duluth East and Mounds View. We hope to be competitive in both our conference and in our section.” Great River and Section 7AA Outlooks: The Bombers are on a 32-game game win streak in the GRC. Last season the average scoring differential in Braham’s conference matchups was 87.4 - 29.3. That’s dominating. In Section 7AA, twotime runner-up Esko is ranked 6th to start, highlighted by shot-blocking 6’8” JR Savanna Trapp and two more 6-footers in Reuer and Bandelin, but they must hone guard leadership lost in grads Deadrick and Pelletier.

“We know and understand the target on our back has grown. We have had a good offseason and look forward to the challenges ahead.”

Making a case for return to State 2012 Lineup: Guards– Tyler Vaughan, Sam Stigen, Casey Grell Forwards– Shaun Hollencamp, Anthony Bias, Dylan Altendorf, Zach Dahlman Centers– Cameron Braund, Drew Klemz Positives for 2012 season: SR Tyler Vaughan, the reigning two-time GRC MVP, has two big milestones in sight for his final campaign: the state three-point record (347 at the start of the season, needs 14 more) and the 3,000 point mark (2,486 points coming into season). Once again, he will set the pace for the offense at point guard, and he should also climb into the state’s all-time steal top 10. SRS Cameron Braund and Drew Klemz bring back gritty experience in the middle, with Klemz capable of hitting from the perimeter. JR Shaun Hollencamp and SR Anthony Bias will also be leaned on for scoring. The Bombers’ interior defense should be improved from last season after it was exploited by Virginia in the 7AA semifinals. Head Coach Bob Vaughan: “We have very high goals for this season with a very experienced group who has worked very hard. We made a very tough schedule to

make us better.” Great River and Section 7AA Outlooks: The Bombers have racked up eight straight GRC championships and are on a 26-game win streak in the conference. Isle out of the north is expected to be improved and move up from their .500 mark last year in the GRC. A lot of rebuilding going on around the conference. Coach Vaughan forecasts that Braham’s bid for the Section 7AA championship must get past ‘11 runner-up Moose Lake-Willow River (four players over 6’4”/athletic guards Jake Disterhaupt and Tony Adamzcak). Defending champ Virginia lost much talent in the graduation of Stackpool and Buck, but there’s another Stackpool coming through (JR Cade). Deer River and International Falls are two more northern teams in the mix.

C-I aiming for break-through season 2011 Cambridge-Isanti Girls Basketball records: 11-5 Mississippi 8 Conference (3rd place), 20-9 overall, Lost in Section 7AAAA championship 2012 Lineup: Guards– Whitney Olson, Erica Young, Brynn Liljander, Paige Muehlhauser, Forwards– Natalie Larson, Rebekah Dowell, Amanda Hanson, Centers– Emily Holboy, Shelby Swanson Positives for 2012 season: SR Whitney Olson returns to pace the offense with her long-range prowess (223 three-pointers coming into season). Olson is on pace to set a new team-scoring record, needing just under 400 points entering this week’s action. SR Natalie Larson returns inside after leading the Bluejackets in rebounding last year (7.9 rpg) and adding clutch buckets during the playoff run (7.4 ppg on season). SRS Erica Young, Emly Holboy and Rebekah Dowell also provide strong leadership at their positions. Swift guards JRS Bryn Liljander, Paige Muehlhauser and JR forward Amanda Hanson combined for quality minutes last season. Head Coach Jody Ledahl: “We have a nice bunch of returners from last season, with five returners who started multiple games each for us. We also have a nice bunch of young kids that we will be mixing in this season, as well. We should have a deeper bench which will allow us to get out and pressure more defensively,

which will be a big improvement over last season.” Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAAA Outlooks: Defending conference champ Buffalo went 25-4 last season and reached State out of Section 8AAAA, giving eventual champ Hopkins a game in the quarterfinals. Runner-up St. MichaelAlbertville begins this season ranked 10th in Class 4A. Coach Ledahl foresees his Jackets, Rogers and the Bison also contending for the top. In Section 7AAAA, Anoka surprised everyone by upsetting three straight teams in the playoffs, including the C-I girls in the championship. If they achieve a fourth-straight berth in the section finals, the Bluejackets must get off to a better start in the game than they did the past two winters so they don’t have to play catch-up again. Forest Lake, Duluth East and Andover are more section teams to watch out for in 2012.

“We should have a deeper bench which will allow us to get out and pressure more defensively, which will be a big improvement over last season.”

Aggressive pace set for 2012 2011 Cambridge-Isanti Boys Basketball records: 5-11 Mississippi 8 Conference (7th place), 9-18 overall, Lost in Section 7AAAA quarterfinals 2012 Lineup: Guards– Jonah Poppen, Tom Selz, Aaron Allen, Colton Banks, Max Knowlton, Kyle McDonald, Chris Olson Forwards– Jordan Schleicher, Ryne Gagne, Matt Swanson, Hunter Vavra, Jake Johnson, Sam Thomas, Mitch Andres, Aaron Sauvageau, Garrett Hiljus, Nate Cox Centers– Clinton Treichel, Travis LaBeau, Bradley Douglass Positives for 2012 season: The Bluejackets are evolving with a fairly new mix on the varsity. Co-captains SR point guard Jonah Poppen and SR shooting guard Tom Selz will lead. Classmates Jordan Schleicher and Ryne Gagne (back from his leg injuries) add experience. SOPHS Matt Swanson and Hunter Vavra bring physical, aggressive play at forward. JRS providing depth are hard-working defender Sam Thomas, Clinton Treichel, Aaron Allen, Colton Banks, Mitch Andres and Travis LaBeau. Head Coach Mike McDonald: “This is a very young team in age and in experience. We lack some size but have some athleticism and will attempt to use this to our advantage by changing our style of play from last year. Where last year we were patient on the offensive end and played a lot of zone, this year we will be aggressive offensively and use the full

court through the implementation of a pressure defensive system. It should be fun to play and watch. Our effectiveness will be determined by our ability to make stops on the defensive end which will allow us to get out and run. In this style of play, depth is important, and we feel we have a very hungry team that will only get better as it develops during the season. We hope to use our youth to our advantage and if we play together behind our team slogan (‘We Not Me’), we will have success.” Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAAA Outlooks: Buffalo ran its M-8 Conference championship string to five last season after going 14-2 in league games and is still good. Coach McDonald also predicts Rogers and St. Michael-Albertville to be among the pre-season contender picks. In Section 7AAAA, defending champ Duluth East begins ranked 10th in Class 4A, led by SR forward Johnny Woodward and 6’5” SR Mat Lochner. Also watch out for Blaine with SR scorers guard Tanner Schumacher and 6’4” forward Duke Anyanwu returning.

2011 Cambridge-Isanti-Mora-Pine City Girls Hockey records: 3-4-1 Mississippi 8 Conference (3rd place), 6-16-2 overall, Lost in Section 7AA quarterfinals 2012 Lineup: Forwards– Alex Nelson, Taylor Bowker, Holly Guerin, Shelby Sylvester, Alyssa Christenson, Bailey Hanson, Brooke Olson, Becca Benson, Kaity Ripp, Jordan Ramey, Kristen Eustice, Steph Cannon, Sam Anderson Defenders– Katie McCann, Megan Erickson, Carly Armstrong, Jessie Morrison, Becca Lillemo, Courtney Lindquist Goalies– A.J. Smith, Jessie Benson Positives for 2012 season: After starting the season 1-3, the Bluejackets have rebounded nicely to come into this week 4-4, averaging just over 3 goals/game. SR Megan Erickson (4G/4A), JR Kaity Ripp (4G/3A), SR Holly Guerin (1G/5A), and FR Steph Cannon (3G/3A) are leading CIMPC in scoring, with more contributions coming from SR Alex Nelson (2G/3A), SR Taylor Bowker (1G/4A), SO Jordan Ramey (4G/1A), SR Alyssa Christenson (1G/3A) and SO Kristin Eustice (2G/2A). SR AJ Smith (3.85 GAA) just earned her first shutout in the Bluejackets’ 3-0 win at Willmar on Saturday. Head Coach Jeff McCann: “We have a very deep team with 15 returning varsity letter winners. Our 10 seniors have all been playing on the varsity team since they have been freshman. We will be looking to our goalies (AJ Smith and Jessi Ben-

son), who do not have varsity experience, to play consistent between the pipes. The girls worked hard this off season and with good team camaraderie; they are focused on having a good year. We will need to make another jump up in our goals per game average again this year. We have always struggled in scoring a lot of goals so we will need to see continued improvement in that area.” Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Buffalo is the defending champ in the five-team Mississippi 8, but North Wright County is coming off a State-entrant season out of Section 8AA. NWC is currently 4-3 and ranked 16th in Class AA. The Bluejackets could get off to a great start in the conference with a win at Buffalo Dec. 13, and their solid forechecking and defense seen the past four games may help them do just that. Section 7AA defending champ Elk River, who finished 6th at State in ‘11, is currently ranked 7th and off to a 4-0 start.

Head Coach Brian Bergman: “We are in a good position to improve on last year’s season with all starters returning. Ellie Werlein led the CAL in scoring last year as a junior, so we expect her to have another outstanding season. I would like to see us improve our record this year, and

finish higher than 4th in the CAL tournament. It will be a challenge as other top teams have not lost many starters either. We will continue to make up for our lack of size with defensive pressure and a quick transition game.”

Warriors climbing the CAL ladder 2011 Cambridge Christian Boys Basketball records: 7-4 Christian Athletic League regular season, 20-11 overall, 2nd place CAL Finals tourney 2012 Lineup: Guards – Josh Roble, Justin Roble, Jack Swenson Forwards – Josiah Scheumann, Jake Bergman, Grant Taylor, Andrew Heidelberger Center – Peter Maring Positives for 2012 season: The CCS boys have grown together the past two winters, displaying strong strides during the 2011 campaign. SR strong forward Josiah Scheumann, who went over the 1,000-point mark last year, returns to lead. JR center Peter Maring led the Warriors with 16.5 ppg and 9 reb./game in ‘11. JR Josh Roble at point guard was the team-leader in assists, and SO Jake Bergman transitions from guard to forward this year. Last year’s sixth man SO Justin Roble moves into the starting lineup, with SO forward Grant Taylor becoming the team’s sixth man inside this year. Head Coach Jeff Bonkoski: “We only lost one player to graduation last year so we should be strong. We were very young last year and struggled at the beginning of the season but improved tremendously as the season went on. We were peaking at the end of the year. With our top 6 out of 7 players returning

from last season we expect to continue to build on what we accomplished in the latter part of the season last year. We are still young as we only have 1 senior again this year. Even though we are young, this team has been through a lot together and have a very united and determined attitude to be the best they can be. The two things we need to improve on from last year are foul trouble and turnovers. I expect that will improve with more experience. We are certainly capable of obtaining the No. 1 seed at the end of the regular season, and it is up to the boys with how hard they are willing to work and continue to improve throughout the season as to whether we will accomplish that goal.” CAL Outlook: Coach Bonkoski: “Mt. Lake Christian Bears (who we faced in the championship last year) will still be strong but they will not be the same team they were a year ago. They graduated two key players, but they have a strong core returning. Faith Foreston Saints were young last year, as well, and they will be better this year. They played us very tough last year, and they were extremely disappointed in the outcomes. RAHS Defenders were very disappointed to lose to us in the semifinals last year after handling us quite easily early in the regular season. They will be very hungry

for a win against us this year. They have a lot of talented height that will pose a threat to anyone in the CAL.”

The Royals are ranked 13th in Class A hockey to start this season. MonticelloAnnandale was the M-8 runner-up after sweeping its games with the Bluejackets last year. In Section 7AA, three-time defending champ Duluth East is still the team to beat, opening this season as the top-ranked team in Class AA after finishing as State runners-up to Eden Prairie. “Gymnastics uses every single part of your body, every little tiny muscle that you never even knew.” — Shannon Miller

2012 Lineup: All-Arounders– Michelle Ziebarth, Emily Stewart, Morgan Urness, Britta Rud, Hannah Haight Event Depth– Jessica Christensen, Abby Schlenker, Kasey Bruss, Tayla Fletcher

Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: The Bluejackets are the defending M-8 champs but 2010 champ Big Lake could be tougher this year. “The Hornets should have a very strong team this year. They struggled with injuries most of last year, but almost qualified for State when they started getting healthy. They bring back all of their varsity competitors and should be very solid,” projected Coach Rooney. “Becker is in a rebuilding year, but they have strong coaches and a strong program so I expect them to be good.” The C-I girls are the two-time defending champs in Section 7AA which also has a new look this season. “We lost Elk River and Chisago Lakes and gained Centennial with the section realignments. Based on last season’s scores, I’m not expecting Centennial to contend for the section title, but every year is different. St. Francis (‘11 runner-up) should be a strong team again this year. The Saints bring back most of their var-

Positives for 2012 season: Four strong seniors graduated from last season’s powerful program, so new faces will be seen. SR Michelle Ziebarth is the lone member back from last year’s State competitors, with SR Emily Stewart bringing in club experience for her first varsity season. JR Abby Schlenker (Vault), SO Kasey Bruss (Beam/Floor) and 8TH Morgan Urness (All-Around) move up from a strong JV team. Head Coach Wendy Rooney: “After graduating the majority of our varsity team, our returning girls are excited to step up into leadership roles and show everyone that we are still a team to contend with. Beam should be a real strength for us again this season. Our vaults might start a little slow, but

Filling holes from ‘11 grads is key task 2011 Cambridge-Isanti Boys Swim & Dive records: 3-1 Mississippi 8 Conference (2nd place),7-2 overall duals, 37-7 all inc. invites, 2nd place Section 7AA Finals, 18th at Class AA State Meet 2012 Lineup: Freestyle– Grant McCormick, Kyle McCormick, Benj Nault-Maurer, Patrick Jones, Darren Codner Odd Strokes– Matt Taray, Calvin Cicha, John Solberg Divers– Parker Brown

picked up its third straight Mississippi 8 title last season, and Coach Gotz sees the Magic as the team to beat once again this year. “The rest of the conference is pretty balanced, so everyone will be gunning for them,” he noted. Anoka won its fourth straight Section 7AA title, with the Bluejackets a close runner-up last February. “Anoka will be very strong this year. I see us, Duluth East and Forest Lake challenging the Tornadoes for the section title,” finished Coach Gotz.

Positives for 2012 season: Replacing a main core of the 2011 team lost to graduation is the foremost task for the Bluejackets this winter. Returning to help lead that chore are SRS Benj Nault-Maurer and Grant McCormick, both who competed on relays at State last March. Nault-Maurer also placed 6th at sections in the Backstroke, and McCormick was 11th in the Butterfly. JR Calvin Cicha also was on the State-entrant 200 Free Relay and medaled at sections in the Breaststroke (6th). SR Kyle McCormick brings back skills in the Freestyle sprints, as does JR Matt Taray in the Breaststroke. SO Parker Brown (9th at sections) leads the Diving crew which was also hit hard by graduation. Head Coach Gary Gotz: “This team has a great work ethic and a lot of young talent. We have some big holes to fill with the loss of last year’s very strong seniors. It will be bun to see who steps up.” Mississippi 8 and Section 7AA Outlooks: Monticello

larger numbers out. Braham athletes which cracked the varsity lineup for Saturday’s invite were Bryce Bodell (106), Frances Loerzel (120), Tyler Stitz (126), Bryce Lanhart (145) and Jerry Griggs (220). Top individuals back on the Rush City half of the co-op include Dan Johnson (152), Logan Johnson (160, 3rd at RC Invite) and Isaiah Johnson (170, 1st at RC Invite). Coach Jake Shockman: “Our numbers are way up this season with 38 wrestlers out, so we’ve got kids fighting hard for those varsity spots. Then I really believe we’ll be in the hunt for the conference championship next season,” he said. Wrestling

Bluejackets vs. Knights rivalry continues at high level 2011 Cambridge-Isanti Wrestling records: 6-2 Mississippi 8 Conference (3rd place), 21-5 overall, Lost in Section 7AAA Finals 2012 Lineup: Lower Weights– Tyler Tischer, Jordan Hay, Nate Medin, Travis Swanson, Tommy Guy, Monty Frederiksen Middle Weights– Travis Holt, Cody Skog, C.J. Schlichtman, Ben Hartnett, Robbie Phillips, Tanner Torgerson Top Weights– Clayton Jennissen, Cole Bakke,

Kyle Chromy, Dakota Johnson, Jon Knowlton, Ben Zins, Derrick Demars. Positives for 2012 season: The Bluejackets solid 2011 season was reflected in a team-record eight wrestlers reaching State, with six earning medals. Four of those return to lead the 2012 campaign: SRS Clayton Jennissen (39-7, 2nd at State 171), Ty Tischer (17-5 at 125), JR Travis Holt (37-9, 2nd at State 135), and SO Cody Skog (39-9, 3rd at 140). All four are ranked in the top four of their weights to start this season, with Jennissen ranked No. 1 at the new 182 class.

More returners with much varsity experience for C-I are SRS Jon Knowlton at 275 (12-20), Nate Medin at 120 (11-16), and Ben Hartnett at 138 (7-5). The Bluejackets are ranked 7th in Class AAA in the preseason poll. Head Coach Neil Jennissen: “We have a philosophy that revolves around participation. I believe this team will be one of the largest in terms of numbers of kids participating in the state of Minnesota. This is also reflected in the number of managers who want to support us. I’m excited to see how many different wrestlers we can get on the varsity mat. We also have high expectations of the kids in terms of work ethic, perseverance and team work. There is enough talent in this bunch to push for a team section and conference title, and also to challenge for titles (team and individual) in the individual tourneys.” Mississippi 8 and Section 7AAA Outlooks: St. Michael-Albertville is the three-time defending champ in the Mississippi 8, surviving another close match with the C-I boys last January. The Knights, also the Section 7AAA champs last season, are ranked 2nd in Class AAA to start the season after finishing as State runners-up to Apple Valley last March. Monticello of the M-8 reached State in Class AA last year and are ranked 10th in that class this winter. More power teams filling Section 7AAA are Forest Lake (ranked 4th), Coon Rapids (5th) and Anoka (10th).
