City of North Branch, Pop. 10,000 North Branch incorporated in 1881. This meant, among other things, that the town could form a city council, pass ordinances and levy taxes to improve roads, sidewalks and other aspects of town life. In 1881, North Branch boasted of two good hotels, a boarding house, two grain elevators, a sawmill, a three-story “flouring” mill, a tin shop, four general stores and a warehouse. It had 149 families that lived in 139 houses. A visitor to the town remarked on the many trees—oaks and maples—that shaded yards and roads. North Branch also had a reputation as a fishing and hunting paradise: passenger pigeons, ducks and geese, deer, trout, bass and northern pike were plentiful. The farmers in the area started with wheat crops, but with the unsuccessful monetary growth of wheat, the cost to maintain it and the insect and other forms of failed drops, a new way to farm was needed. A man from the cities came up with railroad carloads of potatoes and soon the farmers found that the landscape was perfect for growing potatoes. Soon the farmers were growing such a great crop that many other counties and states were purchasing the potatoes. Other counties also began growing potatoes and this became the way for many years of the farmers. Around 1920, the potato boom came to an end and once again, farmers found them selves in need of a new form of income. Dairy farming became a new source of income for many of the farmers and growing alfalfa and corn took over for the potato. At about the same time that North Branch farmers were making the big switch from potatoes to milk cows, the town experienced another important change: State Highway 61 was built connecting the Twin Cities and Duluth, the third link between the two major urban areas. The new highway, built for “new-fangled” automobiles that were immediately popular, ran parallel to the railroad for much of the way. People could now drive their own cars into the Cities, and they did. Ridership on the train trickled to almost nothing. Passenger service was drastically cut back in the 1950’s. The U.S. Postal Service, which had delivered the mail to North

Branch via the railroad for over 80 years, switched to trucks at about the same time. Trains still roared through North Branch, but they were less and less likely to stop. In 1958, the state highway department announced that an interstate freeway would be constructed along the western edge of Chisago County, just beyond the town’s limits. The new freeway would be the fourth time the Twin Cities and Duluth had been joined by a transportation route. North Branch had benefited in the past from the linkage. The city council began preparing for the changes that the new road would bring by establishing a planning commission to manage the growth in business and population the freeway was expected to bring to town. In 1969 the freeway to Duluth was completed and the governor of Minnesota, Harold Levander was on hand to celebrate its opening. North Branch’s 1,000 school children walked from the elementary school to the freeway bridge to participate in the festivities and the Midsummer’s Queen cut the ribbon with a giant pair of scissors to open the new road. North Branch was already expanding in population before the freeway opened. More people had moved into town in the 1950’s than in the 40 years before. More than half worked outside of North Branch and some even worked as far away as the Twin Cities. When the freeway opened, these trends picked up steam. From its very beginning as a small railroad station on the banks of the Sunrise River, North Branch’s destiny has been influenced by the nearby Twin Cities. What its future will be depends on how its citizens shape that influence, what they value, and how they put those values into action. In 1901, a one-square mile area of the township detached from the original village and reincorporated itself as the village of North Branch. The village of North Branch was more urbanized and was centrally located within the original 35 square mile rural area that reverted its status back to township and name itself

Branch. The City of North Branch is always ready to welcome new business growth. The industrial park now has over 300 acres of developmental ready sites. North Branch is conveniently located on I-35 just 40 minutes north of the Twin Cities area. Hwy 95 is the main road traveling east-west through the community. Duluth is just 97 miles to the north, St. Paul-Minneapolis 40 miles to the south, and St. Cloud a mere 59 miles to the west. City Hall, 651-674-8113, is located in downtown North Branch at 6408 Elm Street. Council and Commission meetings are held in the council chambers at City Hall. The city is governed by a fivemember City Council, consisting of the mayor and four council members, elected at large. Mayor Ronald Lindquist, 651-674-8520, calls council meetings to order at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. Current members on the council are: Kathy Blomquist, 651674-7922; Theresa Furman, 651-674-5451; and Joyce Borchardt, 651-674-2988. The Planning Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday of the month at City Hall. Citizen members are John Philipsen, Ann Ney, Tom Borchardt, Mark Ramaley and Don Swanson. The Parks, Trails & Open Space Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the first Monday of the month at City Hall. Citizen members are Chairperson Charles Heinzel, Michael Norlan, Mic Dahlberg, Robert Bernier and John Pantelis. The Economic Development Authority meets at 3:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month at City Hall. Citizen members are Chuck Sinn, Bill Rice, Lorraine Moeller and Doug Fischer. The Municipal Liquor Store 651-674-4082 has been in operation since 1949. It is located at 5846 Old Main Street, one block north of Highway 95/east of I-35, behind the Holiday Station Store. In 1999, the property on which the old liquor store sat was sold to a developer. The old store was torn down and a new facility was built nearby. The new 6,000-square-foot store opened in June 2000. North Branch Liquors has a staff of 10, and offers a wide variety of beers, wines, and spirits. The store’s profits go back into the community through the city budget. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Utilities East Central Energy, 800-254-7944 or 763-689-8418, provides electric energy services, Internet access and telephone long distance to residents living outside of the North Branch Water and Light service area. Customers purchasing from ECE become members of the nonprofit rural electric cooperative. Its district office is located at 412 N Main St. Braham MN 55006 www.eastcentralenergy.com North Branch Municipal Water and Light Department, 651674-7100, generated electricity with a fossil fuel generator for up to 1,000 customers beginning in 1941. In 1995 the department began purchasing electricity for its 1720 customers from the Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency. North Branch Municipal Water and Light also provides water service to the city. It employs eight and is governed by a three-member utility commission. The commission meets at the Water and Light Plant located at 6388 Maple St., at 3:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month. North Branch has the capacity to store 1,000,000 gallons of water in its three water towers. The city has received commendations in the past from the MPCA for exceptions operation, maintenance, and management of its wastewater treatment plant, located on city property near the industrial park. A new Class B mechanical wastewater treatment plant reached substantial completion in the fall of 2004, and became fully operational by January of 2005. Residents in the rural areas of North Branch rely on private wells and septic systems for water supply and sewage disposal. Natural gas can be purchased from Minnesota Energy Resources, 800-889-9508, or Xcel, 800-895-4999. Minnesota Energy Resources is has been serving the North Branch area since 1960 with safe, energy-efficient and clean natural gas. Appliance repair available for residential & commercial. The 674, 237 and 277 exchanges have been included in the metro calling area, and Rush City’s 358 exchange (320 area code) is toll free from North Branch. Other Services Since there is no city garbage pickup, residents may purchase garbage removal services from the following licensed refuse haulers: East Central Sanitation ,763-689-2171; SRC, Inc., 651-4642321; Terry’s Disposal, 651-674-4053; and Waste Management, 715-720-3392. Curbside recycling is mandatory because the nonrecyclable and unsorted garbage is land filled near Mora. The city of North Branch operates a compost site at the end of Ash Street in the Industrial Park. The site is open for drop-off of leaves and grass, and for pickup of free compost. Animal control is contracted to Countryside Animal Impound. Animal nuisance ordinances are enforced. All dogs must be registered and leashed. Annual licenses cost $10 from City Hall. Animal complaints should be directed to the police department.

The North Branch area encompasses six townships — four in Chisago County and two in Isanti County. City of Harris Harris is a small city of just over 1,200 residents. Harris is dedicated to preserving its open spaces, natural features and rural character while allowing controlled and prudent growth. Local churches have also been growing in the community: Apostolic Gospel Church, Elmcrest & Stark Rd., Harris, 651-674-8338; Harris Covenant Church, 43680 Gates Ave., Harris, 651-674-7565; First Lutheran Church, 6508 Gates Ave., Harris, 651-674-4971. One of the more prominent businesses in Harris is the Kaffe Stuga restaurant. It draws people from all over the state with its homemade cooking and friendly atmosphere. Every year in December, they host a day to serving nothing but a lutefisk dinner. All day long, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., lutefisk, Swedish sausage, rutabagas, potatoes, ham, rolls, salads and a smile. People come from all over, and line up outside, sometimes in weather just above zero degrees, just to get a seat. Harris has a major business in the rural area. Knife River, located southeast of Harris on Harder Ave., is involved in many aspects of road work, blacktopping, cement, gravel, and crushed rock. The Harris Family Ice Fishing Event is held on Fish Lake the first part of February each year. It is a fun event for the whole family from first timers through professionals. Harris Farmers Market is held each Sunday from 11-3 from June to October. You can find plants, flowers, honey, wool/yarn, crafts and many other items.

New executive director starts at Ecumen

By Derrick Knutson Nathan Johnson, the new executive director at Ecumen North Branch senior housing, has been in his new position since September of 2012, and said he’s looking forward to learning more about Ecumen residents and the city of North Branch. Johnson, a west Fargo native, is a 2010 graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., with a degree in healthcare administration. He later earned a license for nursing home administration from the same institute. Before coming to North Branch, Johnson was the executive director of Pelican Valley Health Center in Pelican Rapids, Minn., which is also owned by Ecumen. “It was an opportunity to grow with Ecumen,” Johnson said of making the move. “They’re doing a lot of great things.” About Ecumen Ecumen North Branch, located on 383rd Street, is more than just a senior housing facility. It’s a senior living and health care community that feels a lot like a small town, with four distinct neighborhoods surrounding a bustling town center. At Ecumen North Branch, residents have access to assisted living and memory care, as well as specialized health care and short-term rehabilitative care. Living options at Ecumen North Branch include 51 spacious one and two-bedroom assisted living apartments, each with full, maintenance-free kitchens and bathrooms. Heated garage parking is available. Residents also have access to a diverse mix of amenities, plus a suite of helpful services when and if they need them.

Uptown Maple Commons is a senior rental community, offering congregate living for persons 62 years or older. The community is financed under the Low Income Housing Tax Credit Program, making it possible to provide housing at affordable rental rates. North Branch Area Public Schools

North Branch Area Public School District #138 enrolls approximately 3,200 students. The district serves 176 square miles in middle Chisago County and northeastern Isanti County. Schools North Branch Area Education Center, 651-674-1000, is located on Grand Avenue. This site includes the district office, Distance Learning, and is home of the school district Early Childhood and Family Education (ECFE) Center, 651-674-1220. The NBAEF houses Community Education, 651-674-1025 Sunrise River Elementary School, 651-674-1100, is also located on Grand Avenue. This school serves students Grade K through 4. The principal at Sunrise River School is Jason Hartmann. North Branch Area Middle School, 651-674-1300, is located on CR-14. Students in Grades 5-8 attend the middle school. The middle school offers many sports along with a variety of clubs and organizations. Principal at NBAMS is Todd Tetzlaff. Assistant Principal is Kelly Detzler. North Branch Area High School, 651-674-1500, also located on Grand Avenue, serves students in Grades 9-12. Students can take advantage of enrolling in college-level courses at NBAHS, or commuting to area colleges for classes. The district offers students the opportunity to participate in an education-to-work program, which partners the school with local businesses. High School Principal is Coleman McDonough. The assistant Principal is Glen Stevens. North Branch Area Learning Center (ALC), 651-674-1050, offers alternative education programs including a day school for students in Grades 7-12, an independent study program and a distance learning program. The ALC is housed in the North Branch Area Education Center. ALC Director Dr. Lori Zimmerman oversees the programs, which include both homebound and home-schooled district students. The Brooker Building, 651-674-1400,houses the Student Transition & Employability Program (STEP). Unique Learners Manager

Sarah Brown oversees the program. Technology North Branch Area Public Schools have taken a proactive stance to integrate technology into the curriculum. District computers are Internet-compatible and there are computers in most classrooms. District Technology Coordinator is Chip Treen, 651-674-1000. Transportation The district transports more than 3,000 students throughout the year with its busing services. All buses are equipped with cameras and state-of-the-art safety equipment. The fleet consistently achieves safety ratings of 99 to 100 percent. The Transportation Department Director is Bill Burton, 651-674-1030. Extracurricular Activities At North Branch Area Public Schools, our goal is to have every Middle School and High School student involved in at least one extra-curricular activity. To achieve that goal, the school has developed quality programs with dedicated and committed coaches and advisors who care about students. Programs include a wide North Branch Schools - See Page 9

East Central Minnesota Chorale

The East Central Minnesota Chorale is a civic choir representing more than 10 East Central Minnesota communities. Their mission: To bring fine choral music, performed at a high artistic level, to East Central Minnesota. Join the Chorale The Chorale welcomes all capable singers who love the challenge of fine quality choral music. Adults of all ages, young and older, sing in the chorale. If you are interested in becoming a chorale member please contact the chorale director, Mark Potvin at ecmcdirector@gmail.com. Rehearsals are held September through early May on Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Cambridge Lutheran Church, 621 Old North Main Street in Cambridge. History David Clarke founded the East Central Minnesota Chorale in 1980. Clarke was choral director at Cambridge High School, and after leaving Cambridge, became director of music at Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina. Dr. Dennis Port, now the conductor of the Bethel University Choir, also served as director for a few years. Mark Potvin, Choral Director at Princeton High School,took over as music director of the Chorale in September 2007. Throughout the years the Chorale performed in several cities in East Central Minnesota, and the Twin Cities. They also took regional tours, performing in Duluth, Grand Forks, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Rochester, Marshall, and other Minnesota towns. The Chorale performed at the state convention of the American Choral Directors Association, as well as the ACDA regional convention in Lincoln, Nebraska. Over 150 East Central Minnesota residents have been members of the Chorale. Performances The chorale repertoire includes everything from classical Re-

naissance to Contemporary styles, including classic choral selections, oratorios, folk songs and spirituals, as well as Broadway and pops arrangements. The Chorale has invited local high school choirs to join them in Major Works/ Scholarship concerts and has performed with orchestra and professional soloists. The concerts provide a unique experience for area high school singers. The Chorale annually awards two vocal music scholarships at this concert. The concert season typically includes 3-4 Christmas Concerts, the February Scholarship Concert, and 2 Spring Concerts. Occasionally there are additional special event concerts scheduled as well. Unum Vox, high school honor choir In 2009 the East Central MN Chorale launched a project for regional high school students. “Unum Vox” (one voice) is an elite honor choir designed to enrich the typical high school choir experience by allowing students from various schools to excel in a common pursuit of quality singing at the highest possible level. Auditions are open to 10-12 grade choral students. Unum Vox rehearses from 6-8 pm on Sunday evenings at the Cambridge Lutheran Church in Cambridge. They usually perform in concert with the East Central MN Chorale. Mark Potvin also is the director of this choir.

The Chorale is very thankful and proud to have received funding from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through a grant from the East Central Regional Arts Council.

The Chisago County Fair: the perfect community get-together

By Derrick Knutson Summers are filled with fairs: the Minnesota State Fair, and seemingly countless county and city celebrations. So what makes the Chisago County Fair different from the rest? Perhaps it’s the sense of community this fair exudes at every turn. The Chisago County Fair is a chance to get to know one’s neighbors, enjoy the most glorious days of summer, see local talent and taste an assortment of delectable foods. The 2013 Chisago County Fair takes place July 18-21 in Rush City.

It’s hard to miss—just take a left on Fairfield Avenue by “The Big Tank.” Fair activities include a talent show, parade, demolition derby, horse and livestock shows, moto-cross and, of course, numerous rides that induce shouts of delight from riders. There’s also a “Kid’s Day Saturday,” which includes games, pedal pulls, a magician, clowns, balloons, sack races, a duck pond, a pig pen, fair hair, face painting and more. The City of Stacy is named after Dr. Stacy B. Collin, an early resident of the area in 1875. It became a village in 1923 and a statutory city in 1975. In recent decades, Stacy has experienced a steady growth rate. The city has grown from around 1,000 residents in the early 1980s to a population over 1,300 in early 2003. Chisago County Government

The Chisago County Government Center is located in Center City, 651-213-8888, where most of the county offices are located. There are a few offices that are located in North Branch. The Minnesota Extension Service, 651213-8830, Health & Human Services 651-213-5600, the Housing and Redevelopment Authority, 651-674-5664, and Parks, 651-674-2345. Chisago County provides Highway, Parks, Sheriff, Environmental, Building, Public Health, Human Services, Economic Development, library and legal document

recording. Citizens may make appointments to meet with the Chisago County Board of Commissioners through the County Clerk of Board office. www.co.chisago.mn.us. There is a five-member county board; Ben Montzka (Chair), Rick Greene (Vice Chair), Lora Walker, George McMahon, Mike Robinson. The board meets the first Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and the third Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the lower level of the Chisago County Government Center in Center City.

City of Almelund

Amador Township has a long and colorful history. The first explorers to the Amador area were the French who began trading with the Chippewa for furs about 1650. The northern and part of the eastern boundary of the township is the St. Croix River which was one of the main modes of transportation for the Indians and the early fur traders. The Chippewa and Sioux had many battles in the township as evidenced by the number of Indian arrowheads and spears found in farm fields during the 1900s. Land in the area now known as Amador Township became available for sale in the Indian Treaty of 1837. The demand for land continued into the 1850s with the land along the river being the most in demand. The village of Amador was platted along the St. Croix River and settled by Yankee land speculators and at one time boasted a hotel, several homes and other businesses. There is no trace other than former basements of this village today. The area where Amador was located is now in Wild River State Park. Dr. Carmi P. Garlick, was one of the Yankee land speculators that first settled the area where the village of Amador was located along the St. Croix River in the early 1850s. He built a sawmill there which later burned. Dr. Garlick traveled to California during the Gold Rush and spent time in Amador County, CA. After returning, he named the village Amador and later named the township Amador in 1857. Amador is a Spanish word meaning “lover of gold”. Amador Township became a Swedish community with a Spanish name - a little known fact. Garlick had major financial losses in the late 1850s and moved to Osceola, Wisconsin. The first Chisago County settlers arrived by flat boat in 1851 in the area known as Taylors Falls and followed trails to the Chisago Lakes area. They were followed by thousands of immigrants from Sweden. Travel was mostly limited to river travel and steamboats and flatboats made regular trips up the river. The river valley was heavily wooded and very scenic. Swedish Immigrants started settling in Amador Township in the 1860-1880 era. The village of Almelund was founded by John Almquist in 1887 after he heard that a Lutheran Church was being constructed at this crossroads between Taylors Falls and North Branch. Mr. Almquist built a general store which served the community for almost 30 years before it burned in 1911. The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Emmanuel Church was built in 1887 for a cost of $490 with all volunteer labor. This church served the community until 1926 when the community constructed a new large brick church for $45,000. Church memorabilia is located in the church and in the Amador Heritage Center which has a replica of the first structure made by Carl Almquist. The museum also has replicas of the first creamery and a large variety of other local and community memorabilia. The museum is open on Sunday afternoons in the summer months or by appointment. Contact Lin Strong at 651-269-3580. Almelund is also well known throughout east central Minnesota for hosting the annual Threshing Show, known by people

in the area as the “Threshing Party.” It is a fifty-plusyear-old celebration of vintage tractors, old farm equipment and traditional threshing methods. Friday, Saturday Sunday, second weekend in August each year. This years Threshing Party will be held August 10-12, 2012. The Amador Apple Festival is held the third Sunday in September on the site of Amador Heritage Center Museum and Swedish Immigrant Log Farm. This event is geared toward educating children about life in the past—in a way so they don’t even know they’re being educated! It’s a day of family fun for children of all ages. Some of the many things offered are: Music of all types, rides in a Model T, horse drawn wagon rides, three historic log dwellings, a quilt show, Rod’s Famous Swedish Sausage on a Stick, and much, much more. Join us for the arts and crafts show, a piece of great apple dessert and stay for the afternoon. Entertainment all afternoon. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is sponsored by the Friends of the Amador Heritage Center and your donation of an apple dessert or two hours of time is appreciated!

The beginnings of the North Branch area

Geology As Minnesotan, we are all fortunate to have access to lakes that are sometimes as close as out own backyards. But, how did all of those 15,000 lakes get there? Many of Minnesota’s lakes were formed during the last ice age when large glaciers advanced and retreated over the Minnesota landscape. Large masses of ice would break away from the glacier and become buried under layers of sediment. These massive ice chunks eventually melted; leaving large holes called kettles. It is these holes that filled with water to become lakes. Other local influences of the glacial ice of the ice age on the local geology and landscape are the creation of the Rum, kettle, and St. Croix Rivers. These waterways were formed as the melting large sheets of glacial ice produced tremendous amounts of melt water that needed to drain. Evidence of the massive power and volume of the water can be seen along these waterways even today. Potholes can be found near the St. Croix and Kettle Rivers. Potholes are formed in turbulent high velocity waters where rocks trapped in a cavity or crack in the underlying bedrock are swirled from the water flow and carve tunnels into the rock. Potholes near these rivers measure from a few inches to several feet in diameter and depth. Other evidence of the sheer volume of melt water draining from the area can be appreciated in the St. Croix River Valley noticing how much water was necessary to carve this broad and deep valley compared to the size of the river today. Why does the landscape of Chisago County look the way it does? Much of this land’s surface geology consists of glacial deposits of the last ice age (1.2 million to 12,000 years ago). Glaciers changed out landscape by both eroding it and redepositing sediment hundreds of miles away. Glacial erosion occurred as glacial ice scraped up the rock sediment below.

Glacial deposition occurred most often at the glacier margins (or edges), as the melting ice would dump the tremendous volumes of rock and sediment it carried. These glaciers acted like giant conveying systems, carrying loads of rock and sediment picked up beneath the ice toward its margins where it was deposited. Early settlers Archaeologically speaking, this area is believed to have been inhabited since 9000 B.C. People of the Paleo-Indian culture were a mobile tribal culture, following the big game they hunted. After 6000 B.C., the Archaic culture followed game seasonally and added wild plants to their food supply. People of the Woodland Period (1000 B.C. to 700 A.D.) left mounds and bits of pottery as evidence of their spiritual and agrarian advancement. The Mississippian culture continued the trend toward agriculture. The Dakota Indians were pushed west as the Woodland culture of the Ojibwe moved ahead of the European settlement from the Atlantic coast. Settlers from Sweden and Germany eventually settled in the area. Fearing conflict with remaining Ojibwe, they build a fort at Sunrise in 1862. This for served as a training camp for Union soldiers during the Civil War. Christian churches were established in east central Minnesota soon after the Swedish settlers began arriving in 1865. Fish lake Lutheran Church was the first congregation in the area, built in 1867. It was followed by Trinity Lutheran Church in 1887 and St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in 1904, all of which are still located in the North Branch area. Five cultures have inhabited this land. The vegetation has changed from grassland to forest to agriculture, retuned to forest, and in recent decades, has been cherished as a prime location for recreational activities and enjoying the natural beauty of east central Minnesota.

NB Chamber of Commerce prompts shoppers to ‘Buy Local’

By Derrick Knutson Chances are shoppers milling about in various North Branch businesses have seen “Buy Local” logos in the windows of those shops. That phrase is straightforward enough, but what shoppers might not realize is there’s been a concerted effort by the North Branch Area Chamber of Commerce and local businesses to make Buy Local more than just a phrase. “It just started out as an idea to encourage people to buy in town,” chamber member and President of A & C Automotive Andy Schoeberl said. Kris Greene, an administrative assistant at the chamber, said Buy Local started in 2009, and now there’s nine North Branch business leaders who comprise the Buy Local Committee. Initially, the committee focused on offering coupons to encourage shoppers to check locally first before driving to the metro or going online to look for goods. “We had been offering them at businesses like County Market, Shopko, in pizza boxes, the water and light bill and break rooms,” Greene said. But just recently, the focus of the committee has changed. “We’re really trying this year to refocus and pull away from the coupon idea and focus on getting the word out … getting the community to think about the local businesses first and check around,” Greene said. “And then if we don’t have it,

then go somewhere else.” Jennifer Neumann, chamber vice president and owner of Prism Design and Embroidery, said the upcoming Community Connections Expo at North Branch Area High School March 23 is a good chance to meet members of the Buy Local Committee, and also participate in Buy Local bingo. During the bingo, visitors to the expo have the chance to go around and meet area business owners. Those owners or their employees then mark off their businesses on the attendees’ bingo sheets. Once a bingo is completed, a visitor may submit that sheet to be entered in a drawing for a goodie basket from the chamber. “The whole idea was to get them talking to the businesses, because they may not realize who is in town,” Neumann said. Future ideas The committee has an array of ideas its members are thinking of implementing over the next year. One idea, Neumann said, is sponsoring a free Buy Local lunch before the Midsummer Parade. Another would be getting involved with “Shop Hop.” Consignment shops in town formulated that idea last year. People who visited the consignment shops Dec. 7 found coupons, refreshments and more at the five participating consignment and repurposed stores. -Buy Local - See Page 17

I believe the focus and the intent of Buy Local will be changing and growing.”

Trails, Parks and Recreation

The Chisago County Parks & Trails Foundation The Chisago County Parks and Trails Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission to further the establishment, development, and enhancement of parks and trails within Chisago County and to encourage their wise use and protection. The Foundation was formed by inspired citizens in 1992 to focus attention on the need for a non-motorized trail system that will serve to: Improve Safety, Link Communities, Provide Recreational Opportunities, Enhance Tourism and Economic Development and Connect Regional Ecosystems. The CCPTF advocates for pedestrians, bicyclists, in-line skaters and anyone else seeking transportation, recreation and escape by means other than the automobile. Our group members attend city council, planning commission, park board and other governmental meetings in towns and cities throughout the county, gathering information about upcoming transportation and parks projects and speaking about the benefits of trails. The Parks and Trails Foundation’s relationship to the Chisago County Government is one of advisement only. They receive no funding from the County and have no powers associated with County Agencies. The CCPTF does not act with direction from the County Board although the Board does endorse and support the activities with respect to creating new recreation opportunities within the county. The County has asked the Director of Parks and Trails to be a liaison with the group - which he has since 1992. Chisago County Parks Chisago County Commissioners strive to improve the quality of life through county parks, trails and open space. County parks near your home provide access to unique natural resources and outdoor recreation opportunities, lakeshore and riverbanks. County Parks and Trails offer benefits custom tailored to your interests. For fitness or pleasure enjoy hiking, biking or skating on a 16 mile hard surfaced Sunrise Prairie Trail. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. We enjoy hearing your suggestions, e-mail: ljmork@co.chisago.mn.us. All parks are open daily 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Beaches are available at Fish Lake Park and Checkerboard Park and are open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Park Rangers are on duty at Fish Lake Park throughout the season, weather permitting. No lifeguards are posted at the parks, swim at your own risk. Boat launch hours at Fish Lake Park are from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The parks office is located at 38871 7th Ave. North Branch. Vehicle Permits are required for all vehicles entering Fish Lake Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend - $3 per day and $20 per season. A bus permit is $15. Enjoy Checkerboard, Kost Dam, Dennis Frandsen Park and Ki-Chi-Saga Park, no permits required. Make your shelter reservations early by calling 651-674-2345. New in 2011 check out the 9 hole disc golf course at the Dennis Frandsen Park on the north end of Rush Lake

off County Road #2. The course features rolling terrain with lake views from most of the fairways. Throwing discs will be available for rent or purchase at the Rush Point Store. There are no fees to use the course. The Sunrise Prairie Trail Sunrise Prairie Trail in Chisago County and Hardwood Creek Trail in Washington County follow the former Burlington Northern Railroad Right of way between North Branch and Hugo. Directions for the North Branch Trail Head: I-35 to HWY 95 exit. East on HWY 95 to Forest Blvd (CR 30). Go South on Forest Blvd, one (1) block. Trail head is on the southwest corner of intersection of Forest Blvd. (CR 30) and Maple Street. Stacy Trail Head: I-35 to Stacy Exit (Stacy Trail / CR 19). East to Lions Park on right side of road approximately 5 blocks east of I-35. Wyoming Trail Head: I-35 to Wyoming Exit (Forest Blvd. / CR 23). Go east on State HWY 61 to Forest Blvd. (CR 30). Go Left on Forest Blvd. approximately 300 feet, trail head on left. Activities along the trail feature a 10-foot-wide paved surface facilitating hikers, bicyclists and inline skaters during spring, summer and fall. Bridges cross Hardwood Creek and the south and west branches of the Sunrise River. The parallel unpaved portion is open to nonstudded snowmobiles when there is sufficient snow and to horseback riders at all other times. Snowmobiles and horses are not allowed on the paved portion of the trail at any time. Parking areas and information kiosks are located adjacent to the trail at North Branch, Stacy and Wyoming. Parking is also available at the start of the trail in Hugo, as well as in downtown Forest Lake. Golf Courses There are many area Golf Courses to check out as well. office hours are daily, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Day visitors can enjoy a leisurely paddle down the St. Croix River from the Sunrise river access to the southern park river access. The park provides opportunities for semi-modern camping, group camping, backpack camping, canoe camping, and walk-in camping. Visitors who want modern amenities can reserve the guest house which provides a living room, dining room, kitchen, and fireplace. The park also has six camper cabins which include bunk beds, a table, and benches. An all-season trail center is a great spot to relax after hiking or crosscountry skiing on the 35-mile trail system. A visitor center with exhibits and environmental education programs is open year-round. Please visit www.mndnr.gov for more information about the parks system. Wild River State Park’s 6,803 acres stretch along 18 miles of the Wild and Scenic St Croix River. The park is well know for its excellent camping, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, and cross country skiing facilities. The park has 35 miles of trails, Back pack sites, canoe sites, Group camp, Guest house, Camp Cabins, and a 94 site campground with 34 electrical sites. There is plenty of accommodation for your needs or interests. Directions North Branch: take Interstate 35 to exit #147 at North Branch, Take Hwy 95 east for 14 miles to County road 12. Go three miles on Co 12 the road will end into the park. Route is well signed. Total number of campsites: 112 (winter campsites is 8), number of camper cabins: 6 year round. Some camp-

Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area Located 30 miles north of the Twin Cities near Forest Lake. Approximately 25,000 acres of forest, marshland, lakes and swamp, Carlos Avery is best visited in migration when the songbirds come through, usually in large numbers. The Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area is open year round, seven days/week from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Office hours for wildlife staff are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Office is closed on certain holidays. The park is adjacent to a game refuge; birds and waterfowl grace the area in abundance. Kost Dam Park: Located on the Sunrise River south of North Branch or west of Almelund just off of County Road 11. Featuring: Bank fishing and picnicking. The Kost Dam Park is a historic dam site. The dam first built in 1903 was used for a flour mill and later in 1922 provided electricity by way of the hydro power plant on the site. Remnants of the electric generator and mill building can still be seen. The wooden dam which Mr. Nelson acquired in 1903 was not the first one to be built, nor was it the last. All went well with the hydro power plant until the wooden dam washed out again. Mr. Nelson, with the help of the power company, constructed a concrete dam in 1928; the bridge built at the same time is still on site but scheduled to be replaced by Sunrise Township in 2011. Don’t miss an opportunity to visit this precious riverside park if you haven’t yet.

North Branch Area Library

Located at 6355 379th St. in North Branch, 651-674-8443, the library is a branch of the East Central Regional Library (ECRL) which is in Cambridge. The ECRL provides the City with contract library services. There are over 250 patrons per day using the new facility since itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opening in 2005. People can check out books, eBooks and e-audios, magazines, videos, DVDs, books on tape and CD, music CDs, and AV sets. Residents can get their free library card simply by showing two forms of identification, including a current address at any counter of the library system. For each item checked out of the library, the patrons must present a valid library card. For the internet use and data system or word processing, they must also have their library card and password to logon with.

Features at the library consist of copy machine, microfilm reader/printer and fax service for its patrons. Numerous programs for adults and children including preschool story time and a summer reading program are also available. Currently there are two book discussion groups. Book group #1 meets the first Monday of the month at 12:30 p.m. and book group #2 meets the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please call the library to find out the current titles that are being read by these groups. There is also a community room available which can accommodate up to 90 people. Table and chairs are provided for use. In order to reserve the room, please come in person during the library hours. Public Safety North Branch Fire Department 37917 Forest Blvd, North Branch Non-Emergency, please call 651-674-7908 (leave message) The North Branch Fire Department is an organization of 27 volunteers who provide services for both fire prevention and fire fighting. It has been serving the community for more that 100 years. They each carry personal beepers to alert them of emergencies and also located throughout the community are alarm systems. Sirens near the fire hall, city hall, and in the Industrial Park sound to alert the community of harmful weather with a two-minute steady tone. On the first Wednesday of every month, the sirens are tested at 1 p.m. The newly constructed building accommodates the 10 emergency vehicles and is located approximately one-half mile south of North Branch on Forest Blvd. (Co. Rd. 30). The Fire Department responds to approximately 130 calls annually. North Branch Police Department The North Branch Police Department currently has 10 full-time officers, which includes a police chief, sergeant, investigator, and a school resource officer. The department provides continuous patrol coverage to all person within the City of North Branch. The headquarters is in the lower level of the Municipal Building at 6408 Elm Street, PO Box 910. It takes a special person to fill the boots of a volunteer fire fighter, someone with a desire to help their community, courage and dedication; someone who isn’t afraid of hard work. The Almelund Fire & Rescue Department serves 90 square miles and all or part of four townships (Amador, part of Sunrise, Chisago Lakes, and Shafer). They are a self-supporting service organization and a great benefit to the local area. The department currently has 31 trained firefighters of which many of them are also first responders, all of whom are volunteers. They serve a population of 3,000 residents with medical and fire protection. Also within the service area is Wild Mountain Ski Area and Wild River State Park, both which are located in Amador Township. Wild River State Park includes 15 miles of the St. Croix National Scenic River which draws thousands of campers, hikers and boaters to this area each year. Wild Mountain Ski & Water Slide Recreational Area attracts visitors year around. Continued development in the area for housing along with scenic and recreational attractions require that the department be current and up-to-date with equipment and training. Stacy-Lent Fire and Rescue & Police Departments Stacy-Lent Area Fire Department 30785 Forest Blvd in Stacy, MN www.stacylentfire.com • 651-462-3389 The Stacy-Lent Fire Department is jointly operated by the City of Stacy and the Township of Lent Township. The entire site, owned by Lent Township, includes an impressive 9-bay brick fire station, large classroom space and Training Simulator. The fire station and training simulator are widely used by their 34 active, highly-trained members, as well as surrounding fire and rescue departments. Lakes Region EMS ambulance crew out of North Branch uses this facility for a transfer site. Besides their commitment to protecting life and property, the Stacy-Lent Area Fire Department is very active in the community. They offer fire safety instruction for kids, and they participate in parades and water ball fights. In October, the department holds an open house tour of their facilities and equipment, and later in the day, plan to attend their annual Fire House Bash, complete with live band, dinner and drawings. Senior Center

The Chisago County Senior Center and Services is located at 38790 6th Ave. (6th and Maple) in North Branch, 651674-8658 or Fax: 651-674-7630. For more information please send e-mails to Dawn Cash at dcash@sherbtel.net or see our website www.chisagosrcenter.org. The center has been open since 1982 and services many seniors in the community. The Senior Center is open Monday through Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Fridays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with routine stops for the Heartland Express. The Chisago County Board on Aging operates the center with funding completely from grants, donations and fund-raisers. Unlike most senior centers, there is a kitchen on location to cook the 200+ meals a day for the senior dining program. Meal Programs For more information call the Senior Center at 651-6748658. Social Activities There are 500 Card Parties and dances held for the North Branch area and surrounding community residents Bingo on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. Tuesdays is music at 11:15 a.m. until lunch at 11:45 a.m. There is also Dice roll every Monday and Thursday. There are many educational activities available. Classes available are painting, computer & 55 Defensive driving. There is also a monthly newsletter, exercises, health & wellness programs. There is also open com-

puter lab for the seniors available when no other programs or activities are going on in the computer room. Health Programs There is a community health nurse on duty at the center on 2nd and 4th Thursdays with services ranging from helping seniors understand their medical needs, blood pressure checks, medicines and bills. There is a foot clinic on the first and third Tuesday of the month, appointment necessary. Day Trips Day trips to cultural events in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas are organized through the center, and extended tours to various destinations in the United States are made with the cooperation of area travel agencies. Resource Expo Once a year in March or April the center has a fund-raiser which features speakers, food, recreation, raffles and many exhibits. This is the major fund-raiser for the center that is open to the public. There are also many other fund-raisers through the year to help keep the center going. Senior Housing The Uptown Maple Commons senior housing complex opened in 2001 above the senior center. It includes 32 housing units, 28 with one bedroom and four with two bedrooms.

Chisago County Historical Society

The Sunrise Townhall and school was built in 1861. The building now serves as a museum.

The Chisago County Historical Society has been collecting and sharing stories and artifacts about Chisago County for a long time. In the early 1900’s, the Society sponsored the annual Fourth of July celebration and picnic on the St. Croix River where Interstate Park is today. Its first museum was in the Works Progress Administration (WPA) stone building at the park’s entrance. Today the Society has historic displays and buildings scattered throughout the county so that all the communities have access to its rich educational resources. The Society has helped to rescue and relocate buildings as a last resort to prevent their demolition when the structure has important cultural attributes. At the Chisago County Fairgrounds in Rush City, the Soci-

ety has several reconstructed buildings which are open by appointment and during the County Fair. Other historical exhibits are located in the old Town Hall in Sunrise, in the Clover Blossom School at the Almelund Threshing Grounds near Palmdale, in the Gustaf Anderson House in Lindstrom, and in the County Government Center in Center City. Exhibits are still under development for the Moody Round Barn farm site south of Chisago City. The Chicago Historical Society also maintains an extensive collection of family’s genealogies, community history, publications and microfilm copies of local newspapers. The History Research Library is located in Lindstrom on the corner of Third Ave North and Olinda Trail. It is open limited hours everyday and by appointment. The Society’s mission remains unchanged: to preserve and interpret local history and heritage in order to make the past more meaningful and personal to both residents and visitors. Fishing and Hunting

Area Fishing North Branch area is home to many lakes, streams and rivers for various activities. For fishing, you will find: East and West Rush Lake, Fish Lake, Goose Lake, Horseshoe Lake, Sunrise Lake, Sunrise River and St. Croix River. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has an abundance of information available on local waters, including species of fish available, quality of the water, water depth, and locations. The DNR also offers general information on fishing and hunting. They offer the following information on local lakes and rivers. Additional information can be obtained at the DNR web site, www.dnr.state.mn.us, or by contacting the area fisheries supervisor at 320-384-7721. Rush Lake Rush Lake is actually made up from two lakes: East Rush and West Rush. The two are located west of Rush City with one access maintained by the Minnesota DNR. Each access has two cement loading ramps of concrete and docks for easy launching of boats and watercrafts. East Rush Lake is accessible from the northeast end in section 11. There is enough room for approximately 30 vehicles and their trailers. The second access is on West Rush Lake located on the west-central side the lake off Co. Rd. 4. This area also can accommodate 30-40 vehicles and trailers with onsite portable restrooms. These two lakes connect to form Rush Lake through a channel that is accessible to the public. Special regulations on both lakes include a 24 to 36 inch protected slot for northern pike and a 48 inch minimum for muskellunge. Characteristics of East Rush Lake are quite different from that of West Rush. Many people will tell you the fishing is not the same on either one, but is all the fun on both. East Rush is approximately 1,359 acres with a maximum depth of 24 feet, and water clarity of 2.40 feet. The lake is managed primarily for muskellunge and walleye and secondly for large mouth bass, black crappie, bluegill and northern pike. Fish species in the lake include Black Bullhead, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Brown Bullhead, Large mouth Bass, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Golden Shiner, Freshwater Drum, Walleye, Yellow Bullhead and Yellow Perch. West Rush Lake is approximately 1,464 acres with a maximum depth of 42 feet and water clarity of 3.1 feet. Fish species found in West Rush are similar to those of East Rush. Black Bullhead, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Brown Bullhead, Large mouth Bass, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Walleye, Yellow Bullhead, Yellow Perch, Common Carp, Freshwater Drum, Golden Shiner, Hybrid Sunfish, Muskellunge, Painted Turtle, Snapping Turtle and White Sucker. Fish stocking on both East and West Rush Lakes dates back to the early 1900s, which consisted of sporadic stocking of such species as northern pike, large mouth bass, crappie, sunfish, walleye and muskellunge. Walleye fingerling stocking began in the 1970s and continues to the present day. Current plans call for annual walleye fingerling stocking. Muskellunge stocking began in 1968 and currently muskellunge fingerlings are stocked every year. Rush Lake Island SNA, locally know as Crane Island, protects one of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest heron rookeries, with as many as 500 active great blue heron nests each year. Black-crowned night herons are also found in this rookery. A few great egrets have begun to nest on the island in the last decade. The best time for viewing is in the spring and early summer from a boat. Landing on the island is not permitted between April 15 and July 15 in order to protect the young herons. NOTICE: Eurasian watermilfoil is present in Rush Lake and extra caution is urged to thoroughly inspect boats and trailers and remove all vegetation. State law requires the removal of drain plugs and draining of water from all live wells and bait buckets before leaving any lake.

Fish Lake Fish Lake is located west of Harris, off of Co. Rd. 10. It has an oval shape and is about 1.3 miles long. The shoreline is roughly half developed with homes. There is one public access, owned by the county, on the East Side of the lake. A fee is required on weekends and features an overflow parking area able to accommodate 25 vehicles and their trailers. The lake is approximately 314 acres with a maximum depth of 57 feet and water clarity of 7.4 feet. Fish Lake has dominate bottom substrate, sand, muck and clay. More than half of the lake area is no more than 15 feet deep. Species found in the lake include: Black Bullhead, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Brown Bullhead, Green Sunfish, Hybrid Sunfish, Painted Turtle, Snapping Turtle, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, White Sucker, Yellow Bullhead and Yellow Perch. Fish Lake is managed primarily for walleye and northern pike, and populations of largemouth bass and panfish are also present. Current plans call for walleye and fingerling stocking annually. Thirty species of aquatic plants were sampled throughout the lake. Fairly diverse populations of various emergent, submergent and floating-leafed species were present. Recently the presence of Eurasian water milfoil was confirmed in Fish Lake. Extra caution is urged to thoroughly inspect boats and trailers, and drain any water when leaving the lake to reduce the risk of spreading the exotic species to uninfested waters. Goose Lake Located northwest of Harris, Goose Lake has one Minnesota DNR managed access on the East Side of the northern basin. It has a small parking area for about 5 vehicles. Goose Lake is about 754 acres divided into two basins and

has a maximum depth of 55 feet with water clarity of 5.8 feet. There are two basins that make up the lake. The northern basin is shallow and subject to winterkill, while the southern is deep and has plenty of oxygen. Goose Lake is primarily managed for walleye, northern pike and large mouth bass; secondly for black crappie and bluegill sunfish. Species found in this lake are: Black Bullhead, Bluegill, Brown Bullhead, Green Sunfish, Hybrid Sunfish, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Snapping and Painted Turtle, White Sucker, Yellow Bullhead and Yellow Perch. Stocking dates back to 1908, and has included various species of fish. Walleye have been stocked on a regular basis since the 1970s, with current plans calling for annual stocking of walleye fingerlings. There is a 17 inch minimum length regulation for walleye, and there is a possession limit of 5 crappies. Horseshoe Lake Horseshoe Lake is located west of Harris near Stark, a small town off Co. Rds. 8 and 63. There is a concrete public access on the lake, which can accommodate a few vehicles and trailers.

Species found in this lake include: Black Bullhead, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Bowfin (Dogfish), Common Carp, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, White Crappie, Yellow Bullhead and Yellow Perch. The lake is managed primarily as a northern pike lake. Although the lake suffered a partial winterkill 20 years ago, fish populations have rebounded and no winterkill has been recorded since. Good numbers of northern pike, largemouth bass, and bluegill sunfish are present, with varying numbers of crappie. Sunrise Lake Sunrise Lake is located north of Lindstrom, off of Co. Rd. 14. The lake is 742 acres with a maximum depth of 21 feet and water clarity of 2.7 feet. Species include black bullhead, black crappie, bluegill, brown bullhead, green sunfish, hybrid sunfish, large mouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, yellow bullhead and yellow perch. A fee is charged for the private access on the east side of the lake. The Sunrise River consists of two branches that come together east of North Branch. The South Branch of the river has two dams which create the North and South Sunrise pools. While primarily managed for waterfowl, both of these pools have public access and provide some opportunities for northern pike and panfish fishing. Good fishing opportunities are available on the Sunrise River at Kost Dam and in the town of Sunrise down to the confluence with the St. Croix River. Walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern pike can be caught in these parts of the river. St. Croix River Designed as a Wild and Scenic Waterway by the Minnesota DNR (Department of Natural Resources), the St. Croix River flows just a few miles east of Rush City. Excellent bank fishing can be found at little used accesses on the Minnesota side, off of Old Ferry Road and the Old Government Road east of Rush City. Anglers find success fishing for walleye, muskie, northern, small mouth bass, catfish and sturgeon. However, all sturgeon caught must be immediately released back into the water. The St. Croix is a river of two moods-the upper river is a wild stream of lofty pines and myriad white-water tributaries; the lower is a placid river of quiet tree-shaded backwaters. The heavily wooded banks of the upper St. Croix valley are predominantly birch, maple, oak, aspen and basswood. The extensive forests of white pine that once covered the slopes disappeared during the valley’s logging boom in the last half of the 19th century. The St. Croix has little prime waterfowl habitat and hunting pressure is light. However, waterfowl which may be found in the area are mallard, wood duck, ring-necked duck and blue-winged teal. Upland game birds include ruffed grouse and woodcock. The most plentiful game animal is the white-tailed deer. Other wildlife along the St. Croix include beaver, raccoon, otter, mink, muskrat and fox. In addition to catfish, the St. Croix harbors walleye, northern pike, largemouth and small mouth bass, muskie and sauger. The beautiful character of the St. Croix has earned the river its status as Minnesota’s first stream in the national wild and scenic rivers system. Administered by the National Park Service, the St. Croix National Scenic River way was designated in 1968 to preserve the scenic qualities of the river and to provide adequate access for recreational users. Fishing license Information You can purchase Minnesota fishing licenses from county auditors or their agents, including resorts, bait and tackle shops, outfitters, some service stations and convenience stores, and many other popular businesses or online at www.dnr.state. mn.us. You can also get your license and fish stamps by calling 1-888-665-4236. There is a small charge by phone of $3.50 beyond the regular fee for the license. Yearly license fees are $22 for individuals 16 and over, $35 for married couples and $10 for a 24-hour license. Other license options are available; information

will be on the DNR website or wherever fishing licenses are sold. Area Hunting Hunting opportunities in the North Branch area included whitetail deer, wild turkey, waterfowl of many kind, pheasant, bear, grouse and other small game. Most of the land in the area is privately owned and permission is a must to hunt on these lands. Wild turkeys are fast becoming one of the most popular game for Minnesota hunters, probably due to the illusiveness and intelligence of wild turkeys. Hunting rules, regulations, and application procedures vary depending on the game sought and the geographic area. Licenses can be purchased through the DNR, or at a variety of businesses, such as bait/tackle stores, sporting goods stores, convenience stores, and some gas stations. The DNR has hunting regulations books available at its state and regional offices, with complete information also in its web site. Available through the DNR are Public Recreation Information Maps (PRIM). The maps bring together the most up-to-date information on federal, state, and county lands and their recreational facilities, making it easier to find that unique spot for your outdoor enjoyment. Each map displays parks, forests, waterfowl production areas, and wildlife management areas. In addition, each map show facilities such as state trails, fishing piers, campgrounds, historic sites and more. PRIM maps can be purchased for $5.95 plus S&H at DNR regional offices.
