Harry Zenzen owns Harry’s Frozen Foods in Elrosa and has called the town his home for many years. He wanted to see the little town grow but Elrosa needed a place for new homes to be built. To help their hometown expand, Zenzen and his friend Roger Weller got together and purchased some residential land under their company name of H&R Properties.

“We developed the lots because we wanted to get something going here,” said Zenzen. “There was nowhere else to build. There was no land and no place to build a new home, so we purchased eight lots. Two of those lots have houses on them now.”

H&R Properties wanted to use local materials and labor to complete the home. The contractors came from Elrosa and neighboring towns.

Mid Minnesota Excavating Inc. began the project by getting the lot ready and setting the foundation. Once the base was completed, Bertram Meyer Construction set to work using materials from Elrosa Lumber and Hardware.

Ellingson Plumbing Heating and AC of Freeport, Jim’s Electric Service of Greenwald and Spanier Masonry & Concrete of Paynesville took part in making the home functional and comfortable.

“I am thoroughly impressed with all the contractors we hired to construct this home,” said Zenzen.

Zenzen worked with his daughter in designing the floor plan of the home. It was Kayla who did much of the finishing touches to the home’s construction. She decided on a Mission Style continued on page 24

“My daughter picked out some wonderful, homey colors,” said Zenzen. “The painters we hired were ‘Sharon Schoenberg and Gals’ from Spring Hill. They do a lot of painting and are very fast at it.”

One of the best features of the home is the Cathedral ceiling in the main living area.

This was designed by using a metal expansion joint down the middle that would allow the house to settle and reduce cracking.

Other interesting and mod-

ern conveniences within the home are the high windows in the bedroom that allow for additional light but are out of the way of headboards. The siding that protects the house is known as LP SmartSide.

This engineered wood product has a 20 year warranty on the finish alone. Another feature is the soft-close drawer glides that are installed throughout the kitchen.

The total construction of the home cost roughly $200,000 but Zenzen is not looking to make a profit from the property when his daughter is ready to move.

“We will sell this home down the line, but we’re just looking to make back what I put into it. I started this building project to encourage growth, not to make a profit,” said Zenzen.
