Pressure from pollution, development mounts on Minnesota lakes By JOHN MICHAELSON Minnesota News Connection Minnesota has some of the most pristine and scenic lakes and rivers in the nation, and a new effort is underway to highlight those individuals and organizations on the front lines of protecting the Gopher State’s waterways. The Environmental Law and Policy Center has launched the new In Minnesota Water website, and according to executive director Howard Learner, the site is designed to showcase the challenges and successes of Minnesota’s ongoing water conservation initiatives. “We’re telling the stories of Minnesota families, business owners, people who like to fish, people who like to kayak, community leaders, people who are making a difference in keeping our rivers and lakes clean for the future, says Learner. “That’s what makes Minnesota special. The initial group of stories featured on the website include the re-

covery in Duluth from massive flooding in 2012, and a look at improvement efforts around the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. Learner says the biggest challenge to Minnesota’s lakes and rivers is pollution, and while it’s an issue in both rural and urban areas, there are some variations in the types of threats. “Certainly in rural areas you’re dealing much more with pollution that’s non-point runoff from agricultural operations, says Learner. “In our urban areas, we’re dealing much more with water filtration plants, sewage treatment plants and so forth. So people in urban and rural areas have different sets of problems, but we share a common value: we care about our clean rivers and lakes. Learner says the other main threat facing Minnesota’s waterways is from overdevelopment. He says as homes and boats keep getting bigger, smarter decisions need to be made on shoreline development.

The 22nd Habitat 500 Bike Ride will travel 500 miles to beneďŹ t Habitat for Humanity Now in its 22nd year, the Habitat 500 Bike Ride will embark on a 500-mile journey with 135 bikers and 40 volunteers from July 13th – 19th across central-Minnesota, all in order to raise funds and awareness to provide lowincome families with safe, decent, and affordable homes. The Habitat 500, an annual fundraising bike ride organized by Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota, gives riders the chance to build a cycle of hope for families across the world from the seat of their bicycle. Participants will bike 50 to 100 miles each day on the ride, making six overnight stops around Minnesota. This year’s

route kicks off in St. Joseph, and then travels through Osakis, Menahga, Bemidji, Pine River, and Little Falls before circling back to St. Joseph. Riders will spend two nights in Bemidji, where they will have the opportunity to work on the sites of the Habitat 500’s two bike. homes. through a partnership with Northwoods Habitat for Humanity. This is the first year that the Habitat 500 will have the opportunity to sponsor two bike.homes. One of the homes is a new construction site and the other is an A Brush with Kindness project. A Brush with Kindness is a program by Habitat for Humanity that aims to im-

prove the existing housing stock and keep people in their homes. “Each July, I get to see first hand what an incredible job Habitat for Humanity does and how they impact local communities. The week is challenging, but I get to ride through beautiful lake country, I get to visit with old friends, and I get to promote and raise funds for a truly incredible organization, says veteran Habitat 500 rider, Kim LivezeyEisenbarth, who will be participating in the ride for the 16th time this summer. “That’s what keeps me coming back each year. Each participant is required to raise a minimum

of $1,000 to participate in the ride, but typically raises much more, averaging $2,700 per person. This year’s 22nd Anniversary fundraising goal is to raise $400,000 to help create additional affordable housing opportunities in partnership with lowincome families. Since its inception in 1993, $5.19 million dollars have been raised through the Habitat 500 Bike Ride, in support of Habitat for Humanity home construction, contributing to the 2,200 homes built by Minnesota affiliates. For more information on how to get involved, please visit www.habitat500.org.

Studies: Minnesota is healthier than most states County approves golf By DON HEINZMAN Columnist Remember when WCCO Radio featured a spoof on “Minnesota Hospital and boasted Minnesota was “a good state to get sick in? Well, it turns out that by most measures, Minnesota is a good state to stay well in. According to a study by United Health Foundation, Minnesota ranks third by many measures. The latest indication comes from a report by the University of Minnesota’s State Health Access Data Assistance Center that shows Minnesota is making good progress in the number of residents enrolled in private and governmental health insurance programs. Maybe the numbers

on the Affordable Care Act — critics like to call it Obamacare — aren’t as bad as advertised. Granted, Minnesota had a jump on other states with good enrollment in MinnesotaCare and Medical Assistance, Minnesota’s Medicaid program. The Affordable Care Act loosened the restrictions on Medicaid, enabling 135,000 people to enroll. In any event, despite the rocky online rollout of the health exchange under MNsure, from Sept. 30, 2013, until May 2014, the number of uninsured Minnesotans dropped from 445,000 to 264,500 — a 40.6 percent difference. That leaves 4.9 percent of the state’s population uninsured — the lowest percentage ever.

In May, the County Board of Commissioners approved a new ordinance allowing the use of golf carts along county roadways within cities if the city made an official request to the Board and had its own ordinance in place allowing golf carts on its city streets. low prevalence of diabetes and low rate of premature and cardiovascular deaths. The study pointed to a two-year drop in infant mortality from 5.6 to 4.6 per 1,000 births. At the same time, it cautioned about the high percentage of binge drinking and low percapita health funding. While this is a snapshot of the state’s health in one year, it helps keep in context that Minnesota continues to be a good state in which to live a healthy life.
