Use ‘Sleep Boot Camp’ to ease children into school routine Preparing your child for the first week back to school takes more preparation than filling a back pack with pencils and paper. It means getting their sleep schedule adjusted to getting up earlier. For most children the time to start the transition to the new schedule is one to two weeks before school starts. Begin by having your child go to bed one hour earlier than his or her current bedtime and get up one hour earlier for at least a couple of days. Then, move up the bedtime and wake time earlier again every couple days until the child is getting up at the new “schoolâ€? schedule time. Helpful suggestions for getting to sleep earlier include: • No electronics 1 hour before bedtime. • Absolutely no texting or talking on the phone in bed at night. • Avoid caffeine. • Aerobic exercise should be completed at least an hour or two before bedtime. • Reading before bedtime is great. • A light bedtime snack is OK. • Straighten up the bedroom a little bit, wash the sheets and pillow case and make the bedroom feel comfy and safe. • Black out shades can darken the room. (It is hard to fall asleep with
sunlight pouring into the window.) • Keep a comfortable room temperature. • Keep a regular bedtime and wake time. • Do not let your child sleep in too much on weekends or else they will not be able to fall asleep on a Sunday night before school on Monday morning. Having a routine when getting up reinforces good sleep habits. Children who eat breakfast perform better on achievement tests and have better concentration. “Being a positive role model for your child helps set a lifetime of healthy habits.â€? says Dr. Troy Payne, medical director of the St. Cloud Hospital Sleep Center. People who do not get enough sleep at night have an increased risk of weight gain, diabetes, poor concentration, moodiness, irritability and poor attention. Certain symptoms and conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can be greatly worsened by insufficient sleep. The average 5-12 year old needs 9-12 hours of sleep each night. The average teenager needs 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Studies show that the average teen in the United States is not getting enough sleep on a regular basis.
Schefers to host dairy management workshop near Paynesville Aug. 19 Discussion to focus on nutrients Courtesy of Minnesota Extension On Tuesday, Aug. 19, University of Minnesota (UMN) Extension will be hosting a livestock workshop at the Schefers Brothers (Ken and Ralph) Dairy north of Paynesville. Schefers Brothers Dairy is located in the Sauk River watershed and is involved in the Minnesota Ag Water Certification Program. They are milking 75 cows in a tie-stall barn with an
earthen pit, 27,000 rolling herd average (RHA), over 1000 BF, and less than 100 somatic cell count (SCC). Discussions will focus on nutrient management including various options and methods to manage total farm nutrient balance, manure management, and nutrient runoff. Managing nutrients from manure is becoming a high priority among most livestock farmers for economic and environmental rea-
sons. While the workshop will be held at a dairy farm, the program should prove informative for producers of any livestock species. Registration opens at 10 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:30 a.m. Presentations by Jose Hernandez, University of Minnesota Extension livestock nutrient management specialist; Mark Lefebvre, Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) coordinator of the Minnesota
Ag Water Certification program Stearns County Sauk River Watershed; and Randy Pepin, University of Minnesota Extension educator livestock systems. Included will be a discussion time with the Schefers family and their experience with nutrient management and a tour of their facilities. The event will be held at 29336 230th St. Paynesville. A free noon lunch will be provided to all farmers and people
allied to the livestock industry. Directions are from Albany: at the I-94 intersection take County Road 10 south 11 miles to stop sign, turn right onto County Road 12, in 500 feet turn left onto County Road 32, go three miles and turn left onto County Road 33, go two miles and turn right onto 230th Street,. The farm is one mile on right. Directions from Paynesville are: Take
East Hoffmann Street (old Highway 23) east to County Road 33, turn left onto County Road 33, and go north five miles, turn left onto 230th Street, farm is one mile on right. To help plan for food, pre-registration is requested but not required. Call the Stearns County Extension office at (320) 255-6169 or email krek0033@umn.edu or marte011@umn.edu .

LitchďŹ eld safety cab ďŹ rm to add 31 jobs Custom Products of Litchfield Inc., a maker of cabs and operator protective structures used on off-highway vehicles for the industrial market, is investing more than $2 million and projecting to add 31 jobs in an expansion of its manufacturing plant. The company said it plans to add 20,000 square feet at its Litchfield facility so that it can begin manufacturing cabs utilizing expanded processes for two new major customers. The company
said the new jobs will pay an average of $17 an hour. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is assisting with the expansion with $231,000 from the Minnesota Job Creation Fund. Custom Products will receive the funding once it has completed the expansion and added the jobs. “Custom Products is known for making some of the industry’s highestquality safety cabs for
drivers of heavy equipment, said DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben. The company originally was a sheet metal job shop that was founded in 1959 in Litchfield by Arvid Reinke as Reinke Sheet Metal and Manufacturing. In 1962, the business expanded into making cabs for farm tractors under the Cozy Cab brand. Eventually, the company also began making protective enclosures for equipment in the construction, forestry, utilities, turf care,
airport, recycling, military and recreational sectors. The Minnesota Job Creation Fund is a new pay-for-performance program that provides up to $1 million to businesses after they meet certain criteria, including minimum requirements for job creation and private investments. Under the program, businesses must create at least 10 full-time jobs and invest at least $500,000 to be eligible for financial assistance.
Don’t spray too early for soybean aphids By DAN MARTENS Extension Educator U of M Extension Service
The threshold for control efforts with soybean aphids is finding an average of 250 aphids on 80 percent of plants checked at random locations in a field. Reports have come in of some spraying being
done further south in Minnesota. Spraying too early contributes to selecting for a population that is resistant to insecticides and increases the chance that you will need a second spray. Pesticide is put in the environment unnecessarily and increases the risk for more regulations that will make managing
many kinds of pests more difficult. Common sense, based on research based thresholds, is the best approach. It’s your chance to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Getting calls from your own phone number? BBB says nationwide caller ID spooďŹ ng scheme lands in Upper Midwest Courtesy of the Better Business Bureau The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) says area consumers are reporting they’re receiving illegal marketing calls that display their own phone number on caller ID. Though it’s natural to be curious about such calls, BBB advises the public to ignore the calls or let them go to voicemail — and then delete the messages. “This is another clever ruse scammers have devised to get people to answer their phones,â€? said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota. “You look down, you see your own number on caller ID‌obviously you want to know what it’s all about.
We’re advising people to override that instinct. Since the start of summer, Better Business Bureaus across the country have been hearing from harried consumers who are confused — and annoyed — by these calls, which are often dialed by computerized calling centers. Here’s how the scam works: Your phone rings and you see your name and phone number pop up on caller ID. If you answer, a computerized message claims to be able to lower your credit card interest rates, which of course, means they will require your credit card number. In some cases, consumers are informed they can supposedly opt-out of future calls by pressing “1. People who do so can count on receiving more calls of this
nature from other shady telemarketing firms. Any action consumers take tells fraudsters that a phone number is ‘good,’ and that number is added to phone lists which scammers then sell to other scammers. In any case, these promises of lowering your credit card interest rates are not legitimate. The practice of using technology to alter or disguise the true number of an incoming telephone call is known as “spoofing, and its use is growing among criminals who also use this technique to pretend they are calling from a well-known company or government agency. By hijacking the names and phone numbers of organizations with which you are familiar, the callers attempt to gain your trust in

hopes they can trick you into handing over personal or financial information. Per FTC rules, telemarketing sales calls with recorded messages are generally illegal unless you have given the company written permission to call you. Some prerecorded messages are permitted — for example, messages that are purely informational. That means you may receive calls to let you know your flight’s been cancelled, reminders about an appointment, or messages about a delayed school opening. Prerecorded messages from a business contacting you to collect a debt also are also permitted, but messages offering to sell you services to reduce your debt are barred. Other exceptions include political calls and calls from certain health care providers. For example, pharmacies are permitted to use prerecorded messages to provide prescription refill reminders. Prerecorded messages from banks, telephone carriers and charities also are exempt from these rules if the banks, carriers or charities make the calls themselves. “The most ingenious aspect of these ‘spoofing’ calls is the lack of information available to consumers,â€? asaid Badgerow. “If they report the issue to the FTC, what are they to report — their own phone numbers?â€? Nevertheless, BBB has confirmed the FTC does want to hear about these calls and other suspect robocalls. People can file complaints by visiting www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov. The FTC is interested in the time and date the call (or calls) occurred and what product is being offered. Before responding to unsolicited phone calls, BBB advises: • Never give out any financial information — If you did not initiate the call, do not provide bank account, credit card or Social Security numbers over the phone. It’s best to end calls that make you uncomfortable or that you’re not sure about and follow up with your bank or financial institution — or government agency — directly; • Don’t rely on caller ID — Remember, scammers can use technology to make it appear as though their calls are coming from legitimate businesses or organizations — or even from your own phone number. Caller ID is a helpful feature, but it’s far from foolproof. Keep your guard up; • Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t seem right to you, end the call and report your experience to BBB, by calling 1-800646-6222 or visiting bbb. org.
