“Having just driven GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, we can say without a doubt that the lastest generation of General Motors’ full-size SUVs has raised the bar in comfort and refinement for the class.” -Motor Trend TruckTrend - Forbes “GMC Denali sales are soaring high.” - CarBuzz.com

Independence is often taken for granted as there may come a time where it is no longer safe for an individual to live alone. A senior may find that their daily life has become increasingly difficult. Many times the elderly don’t have a family to turn to, or family is incapable of providing the care their loved one needs. Business owner Cindy Karasch recognized the need to provide care to aging individuals within their homes. For the past nine years, she has been working to help keep people in their homes and as safe, healthy and happy as possible. “That’s my goal, to provide whatever the client needs to help them stay in place. Not everyone wants to stay in their home, but if they really want to stay, maybe they just need a little help,” said Karasch. The realization that these individuals needed care came to Karasch as she worked as a certified occupational therapist assistant. While a member of the local nursing home staff in their rehabilitation center, she worried about what happened to these individuals once they returned

Expanded channel catďŹ sh limit proposed for Sauk River lake chain Daily limit would increase from 5 to 10 Minnesota Department of Natural Resources The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting to discuss a proposed experimental fishing regulation aimed at reducing an overabundance of channel catfish in the Sauk River chain of lakes as well as Long, North Brown’s, Eden, and Mud lakes. The proposed regulation would increase the daily and possession limit for channel catfish taken from these waters to 10 fish, with only one over 24 inches. The public meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cold Spring city offices, 27 Red River Ave. S., Cold Spring, Minn. Information on the fishery will be provided and comments accepted. The statewide limit for channel catfish is five, with one over 24 inches. The goal of the proposed experimental regulation is to increase recreational opportunity and use of an abundant channel catfish population. Channel catfish were stocked into Horseshoe and Cedar Island lakes within the Sauk River chain from 1976 to 1988 to create angling opportunities and to help

reduce the number of bullheads. By 1990, channel catfish were becoming abundant and by the mid-1990s they were very abundant in the chain of lakes. Channel catfish were first sampled in Long Lake in 1990 and have since migrated further upstream into North Brown’s, Eden and Mud lakes. Lake surveys in 2013 indicated an increase in channel catfish abundance, especially in Long Lake, but also in North Brown’s and in the chain of lakes. Surveys also indicate that 71 percent of the catfish are in the 14- to 17-inch range. Growth of channel catfish in these waters is relatively slow, taking six years to reach 17 inches. For those unable to attend a local meeting, there will be an open house at the St. Paul DNR Headquarters, 500 Lafayette Road, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24. No formal presentation will be made, but staff will be available to take comments on any proposal. Written comments also will be accepted through Oct. 3, at the Montrose Area Fisheries Office, 7372 State Highway 25 SW, Montrose, Minn. 55363.

Cardiac surgery program maintains top rating Consumer Reports magazine has again given St. Cloud Hospital a top score for heart bypass surgery in its August 2014 issue. No other hospital in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota or Iowa received this recognition. Consumer Reports has previously recognized CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center at St. Cloud Hospital, calling it an “’all-star’ heart surgery group for maintaining the top three-star score three years running. Consumer Reports partners with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) to collect and assess data. The STS maintains a comprehensive heart surgery database that derives a composite score from four measures:

patient survival rate, complications, surgical technique and the correct use of recommended medications. The STS is an international, not-for-profit organization made up of cardiothoracic specialists dedicated to improving patient outcomes. “This report puts us on the map as a premier heart program, making us a destination for heart care for people from throughout the Midwest, said Robert Johnson, Executive Director, CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center. CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center offers a full range of heart services, including diagnostic cardiology, electrophysiology, vascular care, heart surgery and other heart procedures.

ates alternative care for the aging

would do tests to make hey were safe to return but we didn’t cover all arid they have a ride to the y store or to help make I just knew they needed help.” nting to ensure that people eing cared for, she started ative Senior Care. What as a small, home-based ss is now 80 caregivers . The business outgrew me and is now located in own Sauk Centre, and their s reach clients in five counross Minnesota. started as a non-medical, care company. We have ually grown and can now e nursing care with medisetup, vital checks and all ngs nurses can do.” of Karasch’s passions is ng awareness and educao communities. She started siness because she underthat there was a need, but families are not aware that are alternatives to care giv-

help raise awareness, Karhas put together several that include workshops motivational speakers. She a member of the planning

committee for Aging with Attitude, a program meant to promote positive aging while providing education to sustain physical, emotional and financial health. Reaching out to the correct group of people has been challenging. Those who find themselves with the responsibility of caring for aging parents tend to be women who have children or grandchildren that they are also assisting. This “sandwich generation” is heavily involved in its own careers and may be out of state. Karasch wants to help ease the stress of these family members. “Many times I will get calls from out of state. While they were visiting, they may have realized that their mom and dad needed help. Maybe they get a call, and they realize something is wrong. They need someone out here to help and check in on them. They are sitting across country feeling helpless.” One of the ways Karasch has brought awareness to this generation of family members is by attending expos where women of this age group may be. She understands that until people are in a situation where they need someone to help with their aging parents, they don’t pay attention to the information given to them.

“I’d love to talk to more groups, but everyone is so busy. It’s really hard to talk to people,” said Karasch. One of Karasch’s passions is memory loss. She hosts a support group once a month in her office to discuss the journey of memory loss. It is a stressful situation and many caregivers need a place to vent and reach out. The support group discusses how memory loss can affect those who are suffering as well as those who are caring for them. “People with memory loss start to feel excluded. We try to teach how to include them and how to talk to them. They still need their family and their friends. They may not know who you are, but they will know that you are someone important in their life and that you are someone that cares for and loves them.” Caring for aging loved ones no longer means having them move to a nursing home. Due to Karasch’s desire to improve the aging process, families now have an alternative to providing the seniors in their life with the help and care they need. The elderly are important parts of the community, and keeping them happy and safe in their homes and in their communities is now a possibility.

Unusual multi-vehicle auction to be held in Vining Sept. 20 An unusual auction of vintage race cars, tractors and other vehicles will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 in Vining. Dennis and Audrey Anderson are selling off vehicles they have collected throughout their lives. Among the vehicles being auctioned are an 80 hp Case steam tractor, vintage 1960s hot rod, military collectibles including an Er Coupe airplane, vintage race cars, to V-12 Lincolns, Porsches, to modern classics like a 1999 Prowler street rod and even a Rolls Royce. The weekend will kick off with a preview Friday with Vintage Race Cars firing up roaring down

the race track at their home. Music and food will be available. . Saturday, the auction will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with vintage tractors including steam and gas. They will be followed by vintage trucks, Fire trucks include a rare 1952 L Mack, which is one of six ever built. Then the collector cars, parts, and collectibles will be auctioned off. All items will be sold to the highest bidder at no reserve. The collection will be offered on location at the Twin Oaks Farm and also to bidders around the world on-line through proxibid.com. Dennis bought his first

vehicle, a 1934 Chevrolet, when he was 11 years old, and says he owned over 20 vehicles before he graduated from high school. Dennis met Audrey when he was in 10th grade, and they have been together ever since, 53 years together. His father owned dairy processing plants, and he worked with that business till he started his own. His family, two boys, and the business started to grow. Dennis developed unique ways to process ingredients for many products and built his business up to add more plants and develop more unique ingredients for products from animal

ways speak up. “Those kids in kindergarten, first, or second grade are so excited to get back into school, says Gregory. “But if they’re having any problems seeing up close, seeing the words, or just using their two eyes together as a team, that can cause a lot of problems and dampen their excitement right away. Gregory says signs a child may have eye or vision problems include headaches, frequent eye rubbing or blinking and the avoidance of reading and other close activities. According to Gregory, vision is not just the ability to see clearly, but also the ability to understand and respond to what is seen.
