Simon Lake Challenge involves diverse interests Now includes 6,500 acres in Pope County By JOHN MICHAELSON Minnesota News Connection Across the state and region, grassland habitat is some of the most threatened, but success is being reported in West Central Minnesota thanks to a unique collaboration. The “Simon Lake Challenge is a project involving farmers, landowners, environmental groups and government agencies. The goal is to revitalize area grasslands and improve water quality for the benefit of wildlife and livestock, says Robin Moore, coordinator with Chippewa 10 percent, a Land Stewardship project. “It is a community putting aside their differences, listening to each other and really working together to meet a common goal, Moore says. “It doesn’t work to just manage your own land; you also have to make sure the neighbors around you are taking

care of their land to have healthy grassland. Moore says efforts thus far have focused on two key areas including the wide-scale removal of invasive species like the sumac and western red cedar that were taking over in the area around Simon Lake. The other goal has been to open more land to livestock grazing as a method of protection and conservation. “A lot of grasslands do much better with impact from grazing animals, Moore says. “So, a lot of private land that hadn’t been grazed put in some fence, some of the public lands also; we’ve also been combining herds in some areas to provide the correct impact for each piece, and for the management they’re looking for. In just the first year, Moore says, the amount of land under the project has more than tripled in size, now stretching across some 6,500 acres in southern Pope County.

Book on the history of Minnesota’s Boundaries to be discussed Sept. 30 The Stearns History Museum and the Department of History at St. Cloud State University will present a free program Tuesday, Sept. 30, on Minnesota history by historian Dr. William Lass. The presentation will be held on at 7 p.m. at the Stearns History Museum. Admission is free and the event is open to the public. Lass, professor emeritus in history at Min-

nesota State University Mankato will be talking about his new book entitled “Shaping the North Star State: A History of Minnesota’s Boundaries.â€? Some of the questions he answers are: • How did Minnesota get its shape? • Why is Isle Royale part of Michigan? • What’s with that knob on top of Minnesota? • And why doesn’t it

include the entirety of Lake of the Woods? • What about the bump on the western border? • How long has the rivalry between Minnesota and Wisconsin existed? Lass’ interest in Minnesota’s borders stretches back to when he began teaching history at then-Mankato State College in 1960. The author of seven books and dozens of articles, Lass

has touched on the topic of the state’s borders in previous work, but writes that this book is “the first history to systematically describe the shaping of Minnesota. Lass retired from Minnesota State Mankato in 2002. Please contact the Stearns History Museum for more information or with questions, (320) 253-8424 or info@ stearns-museum.org.

Protect your family on the farm before it’s too late

Fall harvest season is upon us and farm safety is of utmost importance. Follow these safety tips to keep you and your family safe this harvest season and all year long! •Perform a safety check of buildings and grounds for obvious fire hazards and hazardous materials. •Store farm chemicals securely where kids and animals can’t access them. Then make a list of the chemicals for firefighters in the event of a fire on your property. •Keep weeds and grasses trimmed so tractor and ATV drivers won’t run into hidden obstacles and holes that can cause the vehicle to overturn. •Maintain clean and neat work areas with tools stored out of the way. •Establish a safety boundary around gas and diesel fuel tanks and other flammable substances. •Don’t wear loose clothing around equipment or work areas. •Use safety equipment the way it was intended. That means appropriate gloves, hearing protection and safety eyewear, not to mention face masks and respirators when working in dusty conditions. •Always have a helper nearby when entering grain bins, breeding pens or other high-risk areas. •Shield all PTO-powered equipment drive shafts, and keep kids at a distance from them. •Discuss safety concerns with children as you explain safe handling and operating procedures. Practice what you preach, and they will practice it, too. •Keep tractor roll-over protection structures in place. If you have a tractor without one, get it installed today‌ and while you’re at it, buckle your seat belt. •Prohibit riders on tractor fenders, hitches, attachments or implements. •Never start or run gas or diesel engines in an enclosed area without being assured of good ventilation. •Outfit tractors and farm trucks with fire extinguishers and first aid kits. •Never exit a tractor or truck without placing it in park or engaging the emergency brakes. •Never leave running power equipment unattended. •Check and maintain equipment, especially hydraulic hoses and electrical cables showing cracks or other signs of wear. •Keep animals in good health and treat them with respect. An animal in pain and discomfort can react aggressively.

acre in the state has risen steadily. “Historically, a lot of folks that were getting into farming had family land they were transitioning into and we’re seeing less and less of that, says Olson. “That’s a trend we’ve seen throughout the entire country, and particularly here in Minnesota. To help beginning farmers find opportunities and navigate the system, the Land Stewardship Project offers various training sessions with the latest round of classes set to begin this fall. Olson says the offerings range from a onetime, four-hour “farm

dreams workshop to a beginning farmer training program that runs for 12 months. “That training program looks at farm planning, financial planning, and marketing, says Olson. “We just added a two-year ‘journey-person’ course too, which is for folks who have been farming for two to five years and are looking for financial and production support. Since the Farm Beginnings Program started 17 years ago, more than 650 people have gone through the course, and around 60 percent are still farming. Details are available at farmbeginnings.org.

L.I.F.E. program offers weight loss, lifestyle changes The L.I.F.E. Program (Lifestyle, Food & Exercise) program is a nine-week, physicianled educational program consisting of weekly twohour seminars beginning January 2015, at CentraCare Health – Sauk Centre. These sessions provide extensive education on diet, exercise and nutrition, as well as practical and behavioral aspects of a healthy lifestyle. The eighth session covers menu planning and food preparation tips. CentraCare Clinic’s board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist David Kroska, M.D., is the medical director for the L.I.F.E. program. Dr. Kroska developed the program and leads the informational sessions which give participants the knowledge they need to gain a lifetime of health through sound nutrition and lifestyle changes. The program’s evidence-based principles can benefit a wide range of individuals who desire to improve health, prevent disease and extend their lifespan. Moreover,

the program teaches key weight loss principles with proven success. The program requires an initial appointment with readiness screening, a physical exam and lab work. A $375 per person fee covers nine two-hour sessions, several books, and a follow-up appointment within one year. The program’s cost includes the option to bring your spouse or significant other without additional charge (materials will be shared). Participants must register in advance by calling 320-352-6591. This program can benefit: • People who want to improve their health and reduce their chance of chronic disease; • Patients with conditions such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia or those at risk for coronary artery disease; • People who are overweight; • Women who are overweight and struggle with fertility issues, especially polycystic ovarian syndrome patients.
