Susan Iverson is an active member of Albany’s Chamber of Commerce. She enjoys making herself readily available for volunteer opportunities in her area and has played a major role in helping the Chamber host some amazing events.

Volunteers are a valuable resource to society. If it weren’t for volunteers, many of the accomplishments communities achieve would not be possible. Susan Iverson of Albany is a member of the Albany Chamber of Commerce and has dedicated her free time away from family to volunteering. As the part-time chairperson in charge of the Albany area’s events, Iverson plays a major role in ensuring that the organization’s events are a fun experience for the community. The three largest events include Heritage Days, Santa Day and a banquet that is held in February to honor all the organization volunteers in the area. She enjoys planning the gatherings and has improved her ability to put together a successful event. “I am excited. Since I’ve been on the Chamber, I am finally use to it and confident enough to start stepping outside of the box,” said Iverson. With a personal goal to continue to make area events more successful and enjoyable, Iverson has boldly taken a step by

It is with the help of all the volunteers that we really have successful events.” Aside from being a mother to three young children and a volunteer, Iverson is also a military veteran. She joined the Reserves just after 9/11 and trained as a cook before being deployed to Iraq. For two years she was deployed, but returned after two of her brothers were killed in a car accident. To help find a sense of camaraderie among other veterans, she has recently become a member of the Legion. She had been approached by the Legion to join in the past, but she felt she couldn’t give them the amount of time and effort they deserved. Now that her middle child has started kindergarten, she can make room in her schedule for more volunteer opportunities. She hopes to bring some of her talents that she has learned from working with the Chamber and help the vets earn some money. “I always like to do this kind of stuff, but I don’t want to take away from my night life and family time. It is nice because it keeps me up to date and in-

formed on things related to being a vet. I want to put the right amount of time and effort into it.” Iverson is not afraid of trying something new. One favorite leisure is traveling. She has explored places from all over the country to across the ocean. To afford the trips, she saves up by stashing away pocket change. Her decision to travel is spontaneous and she will buy the tickets without second guessing. “I want to put as many pins into the map as I possibly can. To me that’s the bees knees. I don’t make a lot of money, but I still managed a trip to Scotland for two weeks to visit a friend. I brought my 10-month-old daughter with me onto the airplane.” Although Iverson is ready to help out whenever possible and loves to take an unplanned trip, it is her children that hold the torch in her life. Her family is the most important thing to her, and she makes sure that none of her endeavors take away from the time she has to spend with them. “I’m very fortunate to be able to spend my time with my kids,” said Iverson.
