Making a difference in a small town is Toni Tebben’s drive. A resident of Long Prairie since 1980, Tebben wouldn’t want to live in any other town. She recently retired from CentraCare Long Prairie as the site coordinator and is spending her retirement finding ways to improve her community. “It’s about knowing you can try and make a difference one way or another at least somehow,� said Tebben. In her career, Tebben enjoyed the opportunity to show doctors and their families the wonders of Long Prairie. As a history buff and with her love of her city, she was able to perk the interest of many qualified doctors and their families into joining the CentraCare team. “Recruitment was so fun. I would introduce new doctors and their spouses to the town. I have done everything from house hunting to taking their kids to 4-H events. We tried to tailor their visits to what their likes are. I was always selling Long Prairie.� Although she was thoroughly

ben has made a mark on Long Prairie. She said, “I did the Prairie Parade for years. When no one else was willing to step up and help, we just decided to stop. Then a few years later, a whole new group stepped up and started Prairie Fest.� Aside from her time at the museum, Tebben is also assisting her community by helping it develop new leaders. Back in 1990, she took part in the Blandin Community Leadership Program. A group of individuals selected by the communities of southern Todd County were sent to the Blandin event. The program is intended to help small communities grow their own leaders and they do this by giving citizens the tools they need to become those leaders. “I’m a very strong supporter of it. It gives you the tools to go back into your community and take charge, make changes and get others involved. I feel like it gave me insights and taught me that we aren’t all the same. Everyone has their talents and their passions. It teaches you how to work with someone who is the total opposite from you, but has the same goal in mind.�

The program encourages the selection of community leaders of both men and women of all ages and ethnicity. The group melts together, benefiting from their diversity and differences while mingling their passions to accomplish their goals. Tebben is currently on the committee to select Long Prairie’s next group of strong, capable individuals that will lead the community into a prosperous future. Aside from her involvement in the growth of her city, she is also enjoying her retirement by traveling with her husband. They love frequenting small museums around the country and introducing their only grandchild to the wonders of history. There are many types of community leaders. Some may be more prominent than others, but it is without a doubt that the ones that may not be at the forefront of the crowd make some of the most amazing differences for a community. Tebben has helped her beloved city in many ways throughout her years, and it does not appear that her involvement will end anytime soon.
