the world's first and only zero emissions airline
Why we take action?
• Our commitment to the environment is reflected in our origin through our name and our corporate identity. • To be a catalyst so the international airlines follow similar programs. • To motivate the tourism industry to take action based on a commitment to the environment.
A Force of our own Nature
• Methods and solutions set by the KYOTO Protocol are difficult to implement. Nature Air had to decipher the text and find a way to go about this. • Controversy – Costa Rica was able to get words into Kyoto Protocol for “avoided deforestation” – outlined in Article 12. – This wording was eliminated in implementation of Kyoto Protocol – Pressure was to reduce, not to offset
• Nature Air spent months researching both local as well as international certification programs.
Less talk…more walk • We decided that the following criteria was important to us: – – – – –
Local presence Credibility Protection of bio-diversity and corridors Social Community Benefits Transparency
• We chose FONAFIFO as a certification agent .
•
Costa Rica’s National Fund for Forest Financing (FONAFIFO) is a government entity assigned by the Department of the Environment and Energy (MINAE). – In the period of 1995-2006 FONAFIFO was able to incorporate more than 500.000 hectares of forests and forest plantations that directly benefited more than 11,000 beneficiaries in Costa Rica.
•
FONAFIFO focuses on: 1. Financing to the environmental private sector. Execution of the Payment Program for Environmental Services (PSA).
• We chose to support the protection of carbon sinks (primary and secondary forest in the Osa Peninsula). – Our investment assured the conservation of biological corridors between national park of Corcovado and private land bordering the park and Parque Piedras Blancas.

What’ What’s tourism got to do with it?
• Tourism -as a global industry with profound impact on global economies – Zero Growth Strategy in Tourism is not a solution – Use the momentum of why people travel…to sway public opinion and consumer action
• No other industry has more to gain and more to lose from climate change than tourism. – Tourism is pre-disposed for conscious consumerism.
• Most companies do not have the time, financial resources and will to withstand the process. – Require Governmental and NGO support and resources
Suggestions for improvements: • Socio-economic benefits a must-have in these programs. • Improve and provide assistance to companies in marketing and education of customers and market. • Improvements in Conservation and Reforestation Programs. - Create reserves of the existing forest - Reforest the cleared zones - Assure long-term protection - Allow “buffer“ for fire destruction - Biodiversity as a compulsary additional benefit
It does not stop there… there…
