Experiential Education Real Learning, Real Education

“Experiencing” a site through the senses …. sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.

“Reflection” . . . taking time to pause, and put what the senses have learned into a framework that allows for understanding.

Experience + Reflection = Education - - John Dewey

On Safari in Sri Lanka

Presentation Questions to Ponder How well does your interpretation program incorporate the senses? Are your guests or visitors invited to smell, taste and touch in addition to see and hear? How might more sensory input be included in your interpretive programs? Do you or your guides plan for the requisite reflection to achieve real learning?

Protected Areas (PA’s)

Most protected areas (PA’s) are “under-resourced and poorly managed, offering little in the way of real protection. Global estimates suggest that as many as 70-80% of the PAs that have been established worldwide are protected in name only and are not actively managed at all.” In other words, they are “paper parks.” -- World Wildlife Fund

Presentation Questions to Ponder Do you have a “sister city” relationship? Do you have a sister “forest” or “protected area” relationship? Who actually manufactures your interpretion signage? Materials?
