Connect: Where is Malawi?
Background Information:
The village is located in Malawi, a country in Eastern Africa. It has one of the highest rates of HIV and AIDS in the world and it is the leading cause of death in the country. AIDS and HIV are a problem that is both leading to and being made worse by poverty. Those affected by HIV and AIDS cannot work and have to be cared for by relatives, meaning they too cannot work. There is little machinery in the country and they rely on their workforce to make money. With less people there is less food and more hunger. Many children are being orphaned and are missing out on the education needed to work themselves out of poverty. As a result, literacy rates are low. HIV and AIDS infections are also higher in women due to the inequality between men and women, meaning men often sleep with many women and refuse to wear condoms.

Demonstrate: Your Challenge! The board has asked you to use your decision making skills to help the people in a village in Malawi
The United Nations has given you a budget of ÂŁ10,000 to help this small community. The UN would like the solutions to be sustainable (long term). After seeing the problems the village is facing, create a speech to give back to the board on how to solve the problems. Make sure you include which options you have chosen to use and why.
You have an information sheet of possible solutions and how much each one costs. In your speech include: 1. A brief outline of the problems facing the village (as listed in your diamond 9 diagram) 2. A list of the solutions you will use (including a budget calculation)
Extension: 3. An explanation of why you have used these solutions. (How your solutions are sustainable and why will they last in the future?)
