ECS Short Courses are six-hour courses designed to provide students or seasoned professionals with an in-depth education on a wide range of topics. Small classes taught by academic and industry experts make for personalized instruction, helping novices and experts advance technical expertise and knowledge. Short Courses are open to the public. Meeting attendees and ECS members receive special discounts.
All Short Courses are scheduled from 0900-1630h on Sunday, May 28, 2023. The Short Course registration fee includes lunch.
SB: Gardner Rooms
Instructor: Mark Orazem
This course is intended for chemists, physicists, materials scientists, and engineers with an interest in applying electrochemical impedance techniques to study a broad variety of electrochemical processes. Attendees develop a basic understanding of the technique, sources of errors in impedance measurements,
the manner in which experiments can be optimized to reduce these errors, and using graphical methods to interpret measurements in terms of meaningful physical properties. The course is based on M. E. Orazem and B. Tribollet, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, 2nd edition (John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, New Jersey, 2017). The basic impedance course covers the front matter (page xxxiii) and parts of Chapters 1, 4, 5, 7-10, 17, and 18.
This is the first of two courses Professor Orazem offers at alternating ECS meetings. The second course, “Advanced Impedance Spectroscopy,” covers chapters 5, 9-14, and 17-22, and introduces model development based on proposed reaction mechanisms, statistical analysis of impedance data, and regression analysis.
SB: Hampton Rooms
Instructor: James Noël
This course covers the basic theory and application of electrochemical science. It is targeted at people with a physical sciences or engineering background who have not been trained as electrochemists, but who want to add electrochemical
methods to their repertoire of research approaches. Researchers in many fields approach their work from another discipline at first, and then discover the advantages of understanding and using electrochemical methods to complement their work.
The course begins with a general foundation in basic electrochemistry which is used to develop the theory and experimental approaches to electrochemical problems of a thermodynamic nature. “Fundamentals of Electrochemistry: Basic Theory and Kinetic Methods,” Professor Noël’s complementary sister course, has a different emphasis. Both courses are designed as stand-alone introductions to electrochemical fundamentals and can be taken in any order.
ECS provides professional development opportunities including workshops and professional panels, as well as career resources. The workshops are targeted at students, early career researchers, and experienced professionals.
Please note that ECS professional development opportunities are not offered in a digital format. Participants must register for in-person attendance at the ECS biannual meeting and purchase a ticket for each workshop.
Wednesday, 1400-1500h
SB: Liberty B
Facilitator: Alice Suroviec, Berry College
ECS brings mentors together with students and early career professionals in small roundtable groups. The discussion topics vary and are often led by the group. Topics usually focus on career-life balance, building contacts and networks, questions about career paths, and perspectives on different experiences.

Instructors: Fikile Brushett, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Lynn Trahey, Argonne National Laboratory
JCESR is a multi-partner battery research hub funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. In continuous operation for over nine years, JCESR has trained hundreds of graduate students and postdocs who have gone on to a diversity of careers in the energy ecosystem including academia, national laboratories, government, industry, and entrepreneurship. JCESR Research
Integration Leaders Lynn Trahey and Fikile Brushett moderate a panel of scientists/engineers (potentially including JCESR alumni) with a range of careers in energy storage. Panelists share stories of their career trajectories with
special emphasis on pivot points, factors influencing major decisions, and career outlooks in electrochemical energy storage. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions in this lively forum.
Monday, 0930-1200h
SB: Liberty A
Instructor: Dennis Hess, Georgia Institute of Technology
Nearly all engineers and scientists work in teams where a leader oversees and guides process/product development and direction. When technically trained individuals undertake a leadership role, frustration is a frequent outcome despite technical competency and good intentions. This workshop discusses why engineers and scientists often find adaptation into leadership roles disconcerting and explores ways to smooth the transition.
Tuesday, 0830-1100h
SB: Liberty A & B Rooms
Instructors: Adrian Plummer and Paul Cooper, ECS, and Jessica MacDonald, IOP Publishing
ECS’s trusted publishing partner, IOP Publishing, offers a first-of-its-kind peer review certification program, Peer Review Excellence: IOP Training and Certification. The course is co-delivered and offers learning with the opportunity to gain hands-on review experience.
The workshop focuses on key aspects of peer review in the materials sciences, including:
• Peer review fundamentals
• Models of peer review
• How to become a peer reviewer
• How to write an excellent reviewer report
• How to spot and respond to research misconduct
Wednesday, 0900-1200h
SB: Liberty C
Instructor: Michel Fouré, Berkeley Grant Writing, LLC
Whether your career takes you to industry, academia, or a national lab, chances are that you will be intimately
involved in writing research grant proposals. In fact, your career growth may largely hinge on your ability to raise funds. While each proposal is unique, critical guidelines lying at the intersection of the funding agency’s needs and your technical idea must be observed to maximize the probability of success. As this workshop is interactive, it is particularly meaningful and useful for participants to be prepared to work with a real example. This could be a proposal they have submitted in the past, or one they anticipate submitting.
