“Books have an instant appeal.”
Edco supporting literacy and promoting reading for all Edco have teamed up with the JCSP Demonstration Library Project to make the In Pieces trilogy available to all schools. The novel, In Pieces, has proved to be very popular. It is recommended by the NCCA/DES for first year students of English and is published by the Junior Cycle School Programme (JCSP) Library Project. In Pieces tells the story of Alan, who is in his first year in secondary school. His mother has just died and he and his dad, Robbie, are struggling. Alan’s best friend is Mary. The story follows Alan through the school year and has a touch of magic realism about it.
Mary’s Shadow continues the story of Mary and Alan. It recounts the ups and down of their friendship through second year. The novel reflects the voices, concerns and lives of many of the young writers with whom Kevin worked during the residency. NEW
Rollercoaster is the final book of the In Pieces trilogy. It is narrated by Mary. She describes a turbulent year in her life as she copes with the pressure of exams, tensions within her family, annoying boys and the complications of friendships old and new.

Reviews “What sets In Pieces apart from other books we use with a class is how instantly relatable it is. The style, the language and the humour all have an immediate appeal that our students can identify with.” Stephen Doherty – JCSP Librarian, Coláiste Chill Mhantáin, Wicklow “In Pieces was the most popular book we ever had in Terence MacSwiney CC. The students loved it. They read it and discussed it and the teachers were so delighted to hear them reviewing the book. We have yet to find another book that could make such an impact on our students.” Anne Masterson – JCSP Librarian, Terence MacSwiney Community College, Cork “From the ghostly halls of the Dead Zoo, to the banks of the Royal Canal, Alan and Mary have brought readers on a journey across a city that like them has continued to grow and change. Although this particular adventure has reached its end, we know that we can meet with them again in any of the places where Kevin brought them to life, be that a summer’s afternoon in Sandycove or a wintry morning in Ballymun. A modern Irish tale that’s true of people, place and voice.” Joe Kelly – JCSP Librarian, Trinity Comprehensive School, Dublin NEW
