Films in the first half of our 2017 -18 season (in brief) 17th September 2017: Lion (PG) Australia/ UK 2016 Dir: Garth Davis A five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of miles from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. 15th October 2017: The Salesman (12) France, Iran 2016 Dir: Asghar Farhadi Forced to leave their central Teheran apartment building, which risks collapsing caused by major works nearby, Emad and Rana move into a new place. An incident relating to the apartment's former occupant arises, which will turn the young couple's lives upside down. 19th November 2017: The Other Side of Hope (12) Finland (2017) Dir: Aki Kaurismäki A super slick drama-comedy that sees a poker playing restaurateur and former travelling salesman befriend a newly arrived group of refugees. 10th December 2017: Lovers on the Bridge Cert 15 France (1992) Dir: Leos Carax Alex is a Parisian down-and-out who returns from a homeless shelter to his more regular bed under Paris' oldest bridge, the Pont-Neuf. There he meets Michele a young painter who is slowly going blind. The pair fall in love, but their happy life together is to be disrupted when Michele's past catches up with her.
