The Laurent family – wealthy, neurotic, self-obsessed and living in a sprawling mansion house, waited on by servants. A snapshot from the life of a bourgeois European family. Expect the unexpected as this is a film by Michael Haneke.

Pawlikowski follows his award winning Ida with the stunning film Cold War, an epic romance set against the backdrop of Europe after World War II. Cinema Obscura Sunday 14th April Summer 1993 Spain (2017) Dir: Carla Simón 1 hr 36mins Six-year-old Frida looks on in silence as the last objects from her recently deceased mother's apartment in Barcelona are placed in boxes. Although her aunt, uncle and younger cousin welcome her with open arms, Frida finds it hard to forget her mother and adapt to her new home in the Catalan countryside. Based on the director's own childhood this film won best First Feature prize at the Berlin Film Festival

Films in the first half of our 2018 -19 season (in brief) Sunday 23rd September 2018: Loving Vincent (12) UK/ Poland 2017 Dir: Dorota Kobiela/ Hugh Welchman Animated biographical drama about the life of painter Vincent van Gogh, and in particular the circumstances of his death. It is the first fully painted animated feature film. Sunday 14th October 2018: I am not a Witch (12) UK/ France 2017 Dir: Rungano Nyoni In a remote Zambian village, a nine-year-old girl is accused of being a witch and given a stark choice: accept her supernatural branding and live a tethered life as a sorceress, or cut her ties with local tradition and be transformed into a goat that may be killed and eaten for supper. Sunday 11th November 2018: Aurore – I got Life (15) France 2017 Dir:Blandine Leoir Aurore is about to become a grandmother. She feels she might as well be invisible as far as the world is concerned. Her boss can’t remember her name and even automatic doors fail to react as she approaches them. Sunday 9th December 2018: Pulp (12) UK 1972 Dir: Mike Hodges Michael Caine follows up his role of Jack Carter (in Hodges’ Get Carter) by playing pulp novelist Mickey King enlisted to ghost write an autobiography of a mystery celebrity on Malta. His client turns out to be a former actor (Mickey Rooney) well known for gangster roles but soon to die. King soon finds his commission more complicated than he first imagined.
