WHAT IS MINIMALISM

PIET MONDRIAN - DE STILL

TRADITIONAL JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE

MINIMALISM IS A DESIGN TREND THAT STARTED IN THE 20TH CENTURY AND CONTINUES TODAY, MOST PROMINENTLY THROUGH COMPANIES A APPLE AND VARIOUS GRAPHIC AND VISUAL DESIGNERS. A MINIMALIST DESIGN IS A DESIGN STRIPPED DOWN TO ONLY ITS ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS. LIKE WITH ANYTHING IN LIFE, MINIMALIST DESIGN WAS INFLUENCED BY CERTAIN THINGS THAT CAME BEFORE IT. SPECIFICALLY, WHAT INFLUENCED MINIMALIST DESIGN WAS:THE DE STIJL ART MOVEMENT, ARCHITECTS LIKE VAN DER ROHE AND TRADITIONAL JAPANESE DESIGN. THE DE STIJL WAS AN ARTISTIC MOVEMENT IN THE NETHERLANDS THAT STARTED IN 1917 DE STIJL PUSHED FOR SIMPLICITY AND ABSTRACTION BY REDUCING DESIGNS ONLY TO ITS ESSENTIAL FORM AND COLOR. LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE WAS A AGERMAN ARCHITECT WHO’S CONSIDERED A PIONEER OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE, VAN DER ROHE STRIVED FOR SIMPLICITY AND CLARITY IN HIS ARCHITECTURAL IF YOU LOOK AT OLD JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN, YOU’LL SEE THAT THERE WERE VERY FEW FLOURISHES, SIMPLE COLOR AND DESIGN CHOICES, AND CLEAN LINES AND FORMS. THEN IN THE 1950’S MINIMALISM MOVED INTO GRAPHIC DESIGN WITH THE RISING OF SWISS DESIGN, USING MAINLY CLEVER TYPOGRAPHY AND MINIMAL COMPOSITIONS THIS STYLE GREW MASSIVE AND IS STILL BEING USED MORE AND MORE TODAY.

SOME FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT GORILLAS; THE MOUNTAIN GORILLA IS ESPECIALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO HUMAN DISEASES, EACH GORILLA BUILDS ITS OWN NEST OR SLEEPING PLATFORM, HOWEVER, A NEST IS NOT USED FOR MORE THAN ONE NIGHT, MOUNTAIN GORILLAS ARE THE MOST CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, THOUGH ALL GORILLA ARE ENDANGERED BY LOSS OF HABITAT AND PEOPLE HUNTING FOR THEIR MEAT, EACH GORILLAS HAS A UNIQUE NOSE PRINT, THE WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA’S BIG TOE IS FARTHER APART FROM HIS OTHER FOUR TOES THAN OTHER GORILLA SPECIES.

THE STRUCTURE OF AN OWL’S FOOT IS REFERRED TO AS ZYGODACTYL, THIS MEANS THAT TWO OF THE TOES FACE FORWARD WHILE TWO FACE BACKWARD. THIS ARRANGEMENT ENABLES THE OWLS TO CAPTURE AND GRASP PREY WITH GREATER EASE. SOMETIMES, MOST OWLS ARE ACTIVE AT NIGHT. A FEW SPECIES ARE ACTIVE IN THE EARLY MORNING OR AT DUSK WHILE SOME ARE ACTIVE DURING THE DAY. OWLS ARE UNABLE TO MOVE THEIR EYES WITHIN THEIR SOCKETS TO A GREAT EXTENT, WHICH MEANS THEY MUST TURN THEIR ENTIRE HEAD TO SEE IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION. BECAUSE OWLS HAVE FORWARD-FACING EYES, THEY HAVE WELL-DEVELOPED BINOCULAR VISION. CONTRARY TO POPULAR MYTH, AN OWL CANNOT TURN ITS HEAD COMPLETELY BACKWARDS. IT CAN TURN ITS HEAD 135 DEGREES IN EITHER DIRECTION; IT CAN THUS LOOK BEHIND ITS OWN SHOULDERS, WITH A TOTAL 270-DEGREE FIELD OF VIEW

IN SOUTH AFRICA THERE IS A PROJECT TO BRING BACK THE QUAGGA, AN EXTINCT SUBSPECIES OF THE PLAINS ZEBRA. YOU CAN READ ABOUT IT BY CLICKING ON THE LINK, “QUAGGA PROJECT,” BELOW. ZEBRAS CAN RUN UP TO 40 MILES PER HOUR AND BABY ZEBRAS CAN RUN AN HOUR AFTER THEY ARE BORN. IN ANCIENT ROME GREVY’S ZEBRAS WERE CALLED HIPPOTIGRIS AND TRAINED TO PULL CARTS FOR THE CIRCUS. ON THE SERENGETI PLAINS, BURCHELL’S ZEBRAS SOMETIMES FORM MIGRATORY HERDS OF TENS OF THOUSANDS. NOT ONLY CAN YOU TELL WHAT TYPE OF ZEBRA IT IS BY ITS STRIPES, BUT NO ZEBRA HAS EXACTLY THE SAME STRIPES.

25.

HIPPO

A COMMON HIPPO’S HIDE ALONE CAN WEIGH HALF A TON, MALE HIPPOS WILL ATTACK YOUNG HIPPOS IN THE WATER, BUT NOT ON LAND, AN ADULT HIPPO CAN STAY SUBMERGED FOR 5 TO 6 MINUTES, A HIPPOPOTAMUS CAN EAT 100 TO 150 POUNDS OF GRASS IN A NIGHT, A HIPPO’S TAIL IS UP TO 22 INCHES LONG.

27.

WOLF

A WOLF MAY SPEND AS MUCH AS A THIRD OF ITS TIME ON THE MOVE. ACCORDING TO SCIENTISTS, THE OLDEST WOLF KNOWN WAS 17 YEARS OLD. WOLVES ARE RELATED TO CATS, BEARS, RACOONS, AND SEA LIONS CAPABLE OF RUNNING ABOUT 35 TO 40 MILES PER HOUR, THE GREY WOLF’S PAWS PROVIDE SUPPORT IN THE SNOW. THEY RAISE THEIR HEADS ONLY WHEN ALERT, AND USUALLY CARRY THEIR HEADS AT THE SAME

LEVEL AS THEIR BACKS. THIS MEAT-EATING ANIMAL COULD EAT ALMOST ANYTHING, FROM DEER, RABBITS AND RODENTS TO ELK, YAK, MOOSE AND SHEEP. DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS IN THE NORTH POLE THE WOLVES CAN GO FOR WEEKS AND WEEKS WITHOUT EATING AND MAY END UP HAVING TO TAKE UP VEGETARIANISM FOR A WHILE EATING BERRIES AND GRASS.

PANDA PANDA PANDA PANDA PANDA 30.

THE PANDA’S DIET MAY CONSIST ONLY OF BAMBOO, BUT PANDAS SURE SPEND A LOT OF TIME EATING IT. THE PANDA SPENDS BETWEEN 12 TO16 HOURS OF THE DAY EATING! IT SEEMS THAT THE PANDA REALLY KNOWS WHAT IT LIKES. BAMBOO HAS A VERY LOW NUTRIENT CONTENT, SO PANDAS MUST EAT UP TO 84 POUNDS OF BAMBOO PER DAY. OCCASIONALLY, THE PANDA WILL STRAY FROM ITS MUCH LOVED DIET OF BAMBOO TO EAT GRASS OR EVEN SMALL RODENTS.

GIRAFFES ARE THE TALLEST LAND MAMMAL, GIRAFFES ARE SIX FEET TALL AT BIRTH AND MALES CAN GROW UP TO 18 FEET IN HEIGHT WITH A NECK LENGTH OF SIX FEET. GIRAFFES ARE BIG HEARTED CREATURES, LITERALLY. THEY NEED THEIR 26LB HEART AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE TO STOP THEM FAINTING WHEN THEY RAISE THEIR HEADS FROM GROUND LEVEL. THE TONGUE OF A GIRAFFE IS BLUE-BLACK IN COLOUR AND CAN BE AS LONG AS 18 INCHES. IT IS ALSO VERY TOUGH AND SEEMS IMPERVIOUS TO THE VICIOUS THORNS ON THE FOLIAGE THEY EAT. JUST AS NO TWO HUMANS HAVE THE SAME FINGERPRINTS, NO TWO GIRAFFES HAVE THE SAME PATTERN OF SPOTS.

THE LARGEST BALD EAGLE NEST EVER RECORDED WAS FOUND IN FLORIDA. IT WAS MORE THAN NINE FEET WIDE AND 20 FEET HIGH AND WEIGHED MORE THAN TWO TONS. THE BALD EAGLE’S SCIENTIFIC NAME, HALIAEETUS LEUCOCEPHALUS, MEANS “WHITE-HEADED SEA EAGLE.” AS IN MOST BIRDS OF PREY, FEMALE EAGLES ARE LARGER THAN MALES. EAGLES CAN LIVE UP TO 28 YEARS IN THE WILD.

PENGUINS KEEP WARM BY USING THEIR BEAKS TO SPREAD OIL FROM A GLAND NEAR THEIR TAIL ALL OVER THEIR FEATHERS. IF THEIR FEATHERS GET WET THE PENGUINS WOULD GET VERY COLD AND THEY COULD NOT SURVIVE IN ANTARTICA, WHERE MOST OF THEM LIVE. WHEN SUMMER FINALLY REACHES THE NORTH POLE THE PENGUINS COMBAT THE HEAT FROM THE SUN BY DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL TO AVOID OVERHEATING.
