Celebrate the Moment

Community is at the heart of this magazine. For ten years now, CVLUX has shared the people, businesses, and charitable organizations that make the Central Valley such an incredible place to call home. The Luxury Awards recognizes all those who make this part of California so wonderful. Our sincerest thanks go out to the community for the part they play in the nominating and voting of our Luxury Award nominees and winners. There are so many people who make this event possible annually, and I am so very grateful to the vendors and staff who put so much into making our party the most luxurious night of the year. This was truly a night to remember.

This LUX life Issue pays tribute to a decade of celebrating the Central Valley, and our cover story commemorates this achievement. In the Party Like It’s 2023 (page 37) cover story, you will find the inspiration behind this year’s event, as well as an inside look at the fine details that made this such a fabulous evening. It’s so fun to see all the Luxury Award attendees dressed to the nines, which is why the party pics section is one of my favorites every year. Here you will find our most loved snapshots from that evening.

Thank you to our advertisers, subscribers, and readers who continue to support and appreciate what we do. Without you, CVLUX would not continue to grow and flourish. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for the Valley and the magazine, and cannot wait to see you again at next year’s event!

Cheers, David

LUXURY MEETS HOSPITALITY

The writer Paul Theroux said, “Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.” His words are all the more meaningful now, given that the world is being explored again. Yet the manner in which we are rediscovering has evolved. Sometimes, the journey itself is of the utmost importance. Other times, simply getting to one’s destination alone can be an undertaking worthy of a vacation, making you relish the holiday all the more. Whatever your reason for needing a temporary home away from home, the hospitality industry plays a huge part in any traveler’s stay. While luxurious accommodations are generally associated only with world-class cities and exotic destinations, a handful of Central Valley hotels are turning that notion upside down. Remember, proximity is also a luxury—these hotels hold that card in spades, as the slew of natural attractions across California is undeniably inviting. So, get your wanderlust on! It’s time to unplug and stay where luxury meets hospitality.

The Darling Hotel

The Darling Hotel really is, well, darling. Originally an abandoned former Tulare County courthouse annex, the recently transformed boutique hotel still retains its original Art Deco aesthetic in a reimagined fashion to accommodate the tastes, sensibilities, and comforts of the modern patron. Located in the heart of Downtown Visalia, guests are within walking distance of the Visalia Convention Center and a thriving downtown scene. Sequoia National Park is about a 45-minute drive away. Each of the hotel’s 32 rooms and/or suites ranges between 220 to 680 square-feet and is uniquely decorated to reference the 1930s. Elderwood, the city’s only rooftop restaurant and lounge, on the top story of The Darling, looks down upon the vibrant nightlife below and allows patrons to enjoy a meal or cocktails while taking in a panoramic view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. With indoor and outdoor seating available, the menu is inspired by local, seasonal ingredients that highlight the bounty that Central California has to offer. Guests have access to a fitness center around the clock. The hotel’s pool terrace occupies the southern end of the property and features an outdoor heated pool. Whether you are looking for adventure or a staycation, The Darling embodies the grandeur of a bygone era while offering small-town warmth.

2023 A Decade of Celebrating the Central Valley party like it’s

Editorial Director Lauren Barisic Photographer Ellie Koleen Photography

The Luxury Awards is the Central Valley’s most luxurious night of the year, and while the 2023 party certainly lived up to those expectations, it also paid homage to yet another accomplishment. CVLUX Magazine commemorated “A Decade of Celebrating the Central Valley” in true LUX life style. Guests dressed in their best formal attire and were treated to a night that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. From the striking floral arrangements and stunning décor to the exquisite food and superb drinks, not to mention an awards show that kept the whole venue on its toes, it was an evening brimming with splendor and success. Yet for those who weren’t able to attend in person, fret not! Here comes a recap of the dazzling 2023 Luxury Awards.

For the second year in a row, the Luxury Awards was held in beautiful Downtown Fresno. This was the first time it was hosted at the Holy Trinity ballrooms, behind the Armenian Apostolic Church. Attendees entered the venue off of M Street. A tunnel with gorgeous draping ushered

guests to the step-and-repeat room for photo ops, where two sponsorship backdrops were ready and waiting. Partygoers checked in upon entering the ballroom, where they were greeted with hand-passed champagne. In addition to the bubbly welcome, servers also distributed the event’s signature drink: chocolate martinis. The centrally located lounge area was accessible from both the ballroom and step-and-repeat areas.

Dark blues served as the color story baseline, which was complemented by magenta and shades of violet. Cobalt carpeting paved the way from the front door, into the step-and-repeat area, and throughout the lounge. The same white draping seen upon entry was unfurled around the entire venue and was uplit with saturated blue and pink, casting a seductive hue over the party scene. The pale nature of the draperies and linens imparted a vivid feel to the bold scheme with the use of mood lighting. The matching dark blue velvet chairs, sofa, and tufted DJ booth harmonized with the luxurious colorway. Mirror elements and touches of silver and gold throughout simply enhanced the luxe vibe.

—40— APR

In the ballroom, the stage commanded attention. A navy velvet backdrop donned the CVLUX logo in white light and was flanked by giant LED walls. The acrylic podium at the center allowed those on stage to be seen uninterrupted. Ghost chair seating and the towering clear glass flower vases outlining the room’s perimeter echoed the transparent effect. The round tables were swathed in snowy tablecloths and matching napkins. To them, a mix of ecru velvet, white satin, and satin stripe textiles added cohesive variation. Mirror tabletops and centerpiece rounds reiterated silvery flatware and drinkware rimmed with silver. This pale palette made the vibrant floral arrangements truly pop.

In the lounge, the bright white dancefloor took centerstage. At either end stood mirror-front half-circle bars outlined in gold. The golden accent tables were the perfect place to set a drink down for a moment, and each sported a compact floral arrangement that added a perfect dose of fuchsia to the room. Scattered lounge seating made the space feel like an exclusive club and drew people to all four corners. At the far end, stood a crowd-favorite—the 360-degree photo booth would catch glimpses of the party in the background as its arm swung around.

Florals are always an intricate part of any event, and these were no exception. Royal blue hydrangeas comprised the bulk of the arrangements. Each masterfully domed bouquet was then dotted with vibrant magenta roses and purple calla lilies. In addition to the lounge side tables, the

dining and cocktail tables, as well as the bars, were adorned with small, various-sized vases. On those select dining tables with extra-tall centerpieces, fuchsia orchids seemingly appeared to drip out of the arrangements. Even the hand-passed hors d’oeuvres featured floral garnishes of the same varieties.

Catered by Pardini’s, the event’s menu was arguably the best culinary line-up yet and got going with a duo of small bites. Waiters carried Smoked Salmon Cucumber Rounds topped with fresh dill cream cheese and rustic Avocado Toast Canapés with crème fraîche and micro greens garnish. Once the attendees were seated and the show commenced, dinner service began with a Burrata & Arugula salad tossed in lemon and aged balsamic vinaigrette, layered with halved cherry tomatoes and prosciutto, and served with a parmesan crostini. After a hearty meal, dessert featured Bread Pudding topped with caramel sauce, whipped cream, and a chocolate medallion.

For the main course, guests chose between three options. The Grilled New York Steak was topped with herb compound butter and served with gouda red mashed potatoes and roasted broccolini. A Casarecce Shrimp Scampi pasta was dressed in a creamy pesto sauce, tossed with roasted cherry tomatoes, and finished with shrimp sautéed in garlic and white wine. For the vegetarian option, a Mushroom Camembert Wellington consisted of puff pastry stuffed with a mushroom veggie medley and soft cheese, topped with a delicate cream sauce, served with broccolini.

Emcee Margot Kim of ABC30 hosted the 2023 Luxury Awards and was assisted by Miss Fresno County 2023 Elita Damron and Miss City of Fresno 2023 Bella Rodriguez, who escorted the winners to and from the stage. The 2023 Luxury Awards Winners were announced over the course of dinner and then immediately ushered to the Winner’s Circle to be photographed during the hype of the moment. But the party wasn’t over yet. DJ Diko had already done a tremendous job playing music for the show, but when the After Party in the Ultra Lounge got going, the newfound energy in the room was undeniable!

The Luxury Awards is only one night. However, it takes approximately a year to get to the most luxurious evening of the year. Nominations for the 2023 Luxury Awards were submitted in July 2022. The top five in each category made it to this year’s ballot. Voting began in September 2022 and went on until the end of January 2023. Each email address could vote only once, and all emails were authenticated at the end of the voting period.

Stay tuned for details about the 2024 Luxury Awards!

FEELING Light Blue

You’ll feel anything but blue in this sky-shaded confection. The practically nude strapless top with embroidered rhinestones allows the pale azul balloon skirt to truly shine as a wearable sculpture. An understated statement necklace will enhance the barely-there bustier. Pale gold, crisp silver, clear crystal, and creamy pearl will complement the ensemble beautifully.

Pinky Swear

We promise pink can be edgy. This ultra-feminine corset-style bodice with contrasting peekaboo scalloped sweetheart detailing is sure to turn heads. So, opt for a minimalist patent heel and clutch that are impactful but do not distract. Orange accent jewels add an extra dose of unexpected color to the scheme, and now is definitely the time to wear your dress watch.

COSTARS

Aries

March 21st to April 19th

Aries bursts forth with a green fire of emerging springtime and a reset to the beginning of the zodiac. The energy of this dynamo can be used to achieve personal growth. The ram provides strength and fortitude to overcome the wave of emotions and feelings right now. Mars, the ruler of Aries, gives these natives the courage and passion to initiate and discover uncharted territory ahead. To rekindle vitality, get plenty of rest, engage in walking meditation, or attempt fiery crafts or smudging rituals.

Taurus

April 20th to May 20th

Embrace perseverance to help you move out of your comfort zone and boost self-assurance and confidence. A great deal of vitality is yours for the asking. New opportunities that serve greater goals are awaiting you.

Gemini

May 21st to June 21st

Calm the inner chatter while focusing on personal goals that expand and support members of your group and your career. The ability to analyze and be inventive helps with improving working relationships.

Cancer

June 22nd to July 22nd

Focus the available energy toward being productive with affiliations. Shifting long-held perceptions demonstrates your unique leadership qualities for achieving group goals.

Leo

July 23rd to August 22nd

Aim for an expansive viewpoint to include a global outlook. A thoughtful and self-sufficient approach can get you far, but joining with others leads to a more sociable and profitable experience with joie de vivre.

Virgo

August 23rd to September 22nd

The key to being molded by life’s circumstances may stop forward motion, but a change of attitude shifts perspective. Redirect and fix plans to make changes that are better for the future.

Libra

September 23rd to October 23rd

The connections with people in your community may overextend you; take a break. Otherwise, exhaustion will lead to missing out with significant companions who add contentment, joy, and balance.

Scorpio

October 24th to November 21st Objectivity helps when dealing with others, making them powerful allies. Start with having respect for another’s viewpoint. Staying engaged and being persistent leads to cooperation and productivity.

Sagittarius

November 22nd to December 21st

It may be challenging to understand what others are saying. Share your thoughts and give people an opportunity to share their thoughts as well to avoid misunderstandings.

Capricorn

December 22nd to January 19th

To achieve peaceful resolutions, make an effort to be open to constructive suggestions. The criticism may not sit well, but acknowledging where you were at fault allows the joint effort to move ahead.

Aquarius

January 20th to February 18th

To reach inner goals and realize personal satisfaction, some modifications may be in order. Shift your focus and primary motivation to fulfill the project you started without overhauling earlier efforts.

Pisces

February 19th to March 20th

Self-motivation encourages new ways to blossom this spring. Stay away from unhealthy habits that involve excesses, such as drugs, alcohol, and food. Be realistic about your strengths and confident in expressing self.
