ROYAL ASCOT 2010

Tuesday 15th June to Saturday 19th June will see Royal Ascot turn into a spectacular colourful scene of galloping horses and fancy hats like you’ve never seen before. Founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, Ascot Racecourse is located in the small town of Ascot, Berkshire (which is also birth place of our editor). It is closely associated with the British Royal Family, being approximately six miles from Windsor Castle, and is owned by the Crown Estate. Royal Ascot is the biggest UK horse racing event of the year hosting 9 of the UK’s 32 annual group 1 races and has also turned into one of the biggest fashion events of the year too. Ladies day is renowned as one of the most spectacular days on the British social calendar where the hottest ladies from the UK are out to impress with the latest Gucci dresses and outrageous hats. Dress code - Ladies are required to dress in a manner appropriate to a smart occasion and although not compulsory many wear hats. Men are advised to wear a shirt and tie, preferably with a suit or jacket, shorts are strictly forbidden, so put those pins away boys! There are a few different ticket options ranging from The Sliver Ring to The Royal Enclosure (which is invite only by Her Majesty The Queen). Prices range from £17 to £235. This is by far one of the greatest British days out of the year and is an even better day if your horse is a winner, we’ll see you in The Royal Enclosure!!

THE GREAT MANCHESTER RUN

Sunday May 16th sees the return of the annual Bupa Great Manchester Run, as 36,000 participants take to the streets of Manchester city centre to walk, jog, or sprint 10k, all in aid of charity.

The Bupa Great Manchester Run welcomes applicants from all walks of life including men, women and children of all ages and abilities. There are even a handful of celebrities taking part, with Coronation Street’s Samia Smith and ‘Dancing on Ice’ winner Richard Fleeshman being amongst the guests confirmed so far. The elite 10k run covers the length and breadth of Manchester city centre, with the race starting at the cross-roads of Portland St and Oxford Rd and finishing at Deansgate. There are 13 music stops along the way with live bands, DJ’s and local radio station Key 103 keeping runners entertained whilst they slog it out for their chosen charity. The Alzheimer’s Society is Bupa’s nominated charity for the 2010 Bupa Great Run series, whilst the Leukemia and Lymphomia Research charity has been chosen for the children’s race. However, charities for all causes are welcome, and last year over £8 million was raised by Manchester’s runners. Not only will this be a fabulous day-out for friends and family, but it is also for a good cause so get down and show your support! VIVA 12

t was time to say goodbye. That moment when the slightest hint of inappropriate solecisms would sabotage all the hard ground work I had put in over the course of the weekend.

I had given her a tour of Manchester and at points even became a passenger in my own ride of emotions. I had survived the big wheel that dwarfs Selfridge’s entrance and the rest of the city landscape, despite being paralysed from the waist down with fear. We had also giggled together in a joyous triumph after 23 red came in at G Casino. Later we collapsed in a heap of exhaustion after traversing the length and breadth of the city centre to find that perfect gift for her ‘bff’ back home- a trinket that she hoped would encapsulate what we Mancunians, children of the Gods, experience on our daily travels in and around the city centre- And finally, judging by her tightening clasp of my hand and her ever-broadening smile, she had hoped we would fall in love under the bright lights of China town after a feast of spare ribs and dim sum at Pacific restaurant.

Her assertion was riddled with incongruity. And I’ll tell you why. We had fallen in love that day- but not with each other. Indeed, her smile broadened but not at my jokes. Yes, It was true that I couldn’t help but notice her tightening grip of my hand but only as we reached the pinnacle of the big wheels perennial revolutions. I was merely her tour guide and despite experiencing so much together, in her heart, it meant nothing at all.

She had fallen in love my city and its beautiful people. As I watched her get on the train at Piccadilly station I noticed she had made her way to the nearest window to say her final goodbyes. As the train began to move signaling the end of our magical weekend she forced open the window to utter those three famous words.

“I love Manchester…” It made me think. Have I really taken for granted what the UK’s unofficial second city has to offer? Have I been spoiled by familiarity? Could I too rekindle my love for the region that raised me and generations of other Mancunians? Manchester is draped in a rich history that even the Oxbridge historian would find difficult to charter. The collection of museums in the city centre and its environs has however recorded the evolution of Manchester’s history- and there are lots of them. The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, or, ‘MOSI’, as it’s known by those who frequent it, has been around for 40 years. Granted not at the sight it rests today but it has served as a museum devoted to science, technology and industry. It is likely you didn’t know but Manchester was the first industrialised city in the world. This grandiose accolade was brought about by a boom in textile manufacturing over the course of the industrial revolution.

Those days are long gone but the heritage remains. The MOSI building itself is spread across the former Liverpool Road Station which linked the Manchester-Liverpool railway; the world’s first passenger railway. Today the sight is home to a dozen decommissioned airplanes that greet unsuspecting visitors in the museum’s aerodynamics department. More modern museums like the Urbis are slowly etching their mark on Manchester’s historical tablets. Located near the Printworks, and across the road from the triangle, the sloping glass structure known as the Urbis does actually serve a purpose. A quick glance could suggest it maybe an artificial ski-slope but inside that triangle of glass and modern stainless steel are an accumulation of exhibitions serving the people of Manchester and those hoping to steal a piece of our town for the weekend. The building itself was added to the Mancunian landscape as part of a £42m project for the development

of a Manchester Millenium Quarter and may I say that it was money well spent. Urbis hosts a shop, bar, restaurant, language forums and research facilities and the new exhibitions that grace its show rooms mean that Urbis is a unique educational tool socially and culturally. News that Urbis is to morph into The National Football Museum in the spring/summer of 2011 delighted many who see Manchester as the home of global football- the stomping ground of the world’s most well known club and also its geographical rival who stake their claim to global economic superiority. I am however guilty of neglecting our town. The People’s History Museum, just metres from the Manchester Civil Justice Centre is next on my to do list of cultural enlightenment. Yet even after going there, doing that and buying a ruler from the gift shop I would still not have scratched the historical museum surface. Add the countless art galleries

interspersed throughout the city and my to do list could officially label me as an outsider.

I love Manchester- enough, is never enough. While we’re on the topic of museums- only after planning on how to romantically occupy my lady friend for the weekend did I realise that Manchester had nine theatres in the city centre alone. Nine! With at least four of those claiming world class auditoriums. I have been to the Manchester Opera House a minimum of six times, all to see one of my favourite productions- Phantom of the Opera, a Lloyd-Webber classic. The M.E.N. arena hosts not only sporting events but big acts from all over the entertainment industry with America’s hottest stars jetting over from their L.A. ‘cribs’ to pay our inconspicuous city a visit. The Bridgewater Hall is our

one stop for orchestral delights (I can admit to being amongst a crowd of octogenarians once or twice) and of course the Manchester Apollo and Royal Northern College of Music need no introduction.

I love Manchester- our city has choice. Despite what Jamie Oliver will have you believe, more and more city dwellers are ditching culinary patience, woks and herb racks for eating out. Manchester is the second home to an impressive collection of international cuisine: so if you fancy going European for the evening, a collection of French, Spanish, Italian food; Manchester has got you covered. I can head down Brasserie Gerard looking out onto Albert Square where the food is renowned and the service is second to none. Equally, South American restaurants such as Bem Brasil off Deansgate have become increasingly popular with those

bored of the ‘samey’ European eateries- opting for a warmer vibe and a new approach to preparing and cooking the evening’s edibles. Of course, eating French isn’t everyone’s thing and watching Brasil take on Argentina is as South American as some people go, so there are enough ‘greasy spoon’ establishments to provide those all important five-a-days. Oxford Road- the main artery running through the heart of the city is home to some of these ‘Mum’s kitchen’ restaurants. ‘Odder Bar’ facing the iconic BBC building or just around the corner, ‘Font Bar,’ are two of my favourites. ‘Odder’s’ website boasts “If you like mirror covered stairways, giant lizards, huge vases and loads of clocks then you’re a very strange person indeed, but also you’ll love Odder.” Odder was voted Best

Bar North & Best Bar at BEDA’s UK Awards in 2007-08 and was also nominated Best Bar AND Best Newcomer at the Manchester Food & Drink Awards 2007 – enough said! The all day breakfast on thick, toasted bread is the cure for any hangover but becoming a regular face here is will see you develop a nefarious over-hang. Font bar is equally as impressive and curly fries served with a cous-cous/ southern fried chicken wrap with a couple of tomatos thrown in for good measure means that ‘Font’ is another winner. £2 cocktails and other selected house beers and cheap drinks gives you valid reason to try the Misses’ favourite drink- a Strawberry Daiquiri topped with whipped cream.

I love Manchester- it seems even wearing your PJ’s into the city for an afternoon shop is classed as a fashion statement. Like any major city, Manchester is made up of districts. These districts have developed their own vibe, crowd and sound. The nightlife in Manchester is legendary and with a student population said to be over 100,000 our city never sleeps. The Printworks offers a range of venues, spanning from the well known ‘Tiger Tiger’ franchise to superclubs like ‘Pure’ and ‘Opus.’ The newly opened ‘Entourage’ has already stamped its mark with the weekly anticipated night-‘Airport’ and ‘Norwegian Blue,’ ‘Hard Rock Café’ and ‘Henry J Beans’ offers the enticing bar atmosphere with a good food element. Exclusive bars and clubs like Boutique, Circle and Bijou are the local playgrounds for footballers and their groupies- some even making the potentially hostile journey up from Liverpool FC.

Dukes 92 in Castlefield is THE summer spot with a massive courtyard that is teaming with Manchester’s faces donning newly purchased Ray Ban’s at the slightest glimpse of a bit of sun. Here you will find a comprehensive selection of world cheeses that complement their privileged selection of wines. Linen (inside G Casino) is a must try for Nouvelle Cuisine and the décor lends for comfortable exclusive dining. Chinatown is my area of choice for good food. Sushi houses, dim sum parlours and full-blown Chinese and Cantonese restaurants will leave your head spinning (and that’s before the Saki). My lady friend was treated to a night at Pacific but one literally has the option of trying somewhere new once a week for an entire calendar year without ever entering the same restaurant twice. The self explanatory ‘Curry Mile’ located near the student quarter of Rusholme/Fallowfield boasts curry, kebabs and Krunchy Chicken, if a sit down meal really isn’t your thing. Despite sitting less than one mile on Wilmslow Road, the ‘Curry Mile’ was given its name for being the largest concentration of South Asian bistros outside of the Indian subcontinent with over 70 curry houses and kebab shops lining the street. For the best kobeda’s in town head to ‘Kobeda Place’ (affectionately known by locals as the Palace).

I love Manchester- I can eat fresh sushi for breakfast or have an Afghan kobeda delivered straight to my door.

Manchester is a hub for past, present and future musical creativity and home to Simply Red, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Oasis, to name but a few legendary bands. Our creative genius has been celebrated with the inception of Noise Lab on Market Street in the city. Noise Lab is the brainchild of Noise Festival, and has, with the support of the National Arts Charity and Manchester City Council, transformed an empty shop into a cultural and creative hub, showcasing and nurturing young talent. Spread across three floors, each with its own identity and feel, the Lab was redesigned as an artistic space for visitors, artists and guest editors to become immersed in what those in charge hope will become a living body of artistic expression. The only project of its kind on offer this side of the hemisphere, Noise Lab has again confirmed that Manchester is the second city and our decade long jostling for position with Birmingham has come to an end.

The Northern Quarter is where you’ll find Manchester’s increasingly trendy bars. ‘Lammars,’ ‘Walrus,’ ‘The Northern,’ ‘Odd Bar,’ ‘Bluu,’ ‘Simple,’ ‘Apotheca,’ ‘Cuba Café’ and ‘English lounge’ is really naming but a few. It must to be seen to be believed. The iconic arches of Deansgate Locks set in the shadow of the club that created Manchester’s alter ego ‘Mad’chester cannot go unmentioned. Locally known as ‘The Locks,’ this stretch of bars is usually busy during the week and bustling come the weekend. Manchester gay scene is unofficially second only to that of London. ‘The Village’ or ‘Canal Street’ as it also known, offers an atmosphere that is unique to that part of the city and should be experienced at all costs! Good clubs, bars, food and hotels for ALL! Finally, we would be a doing a disservice to our city if we didn’t mention FAC251- a distant cousin of the world’s best club, the Hacienda. FAC251 has the same father but the crowd, vibe and approach has changed. Peter Hook can be seen behind the decks on a Saturday night at the venue but this club is a guaranteed good night nearly every weekday.

I love Manchester- because of its legacy, people think it’s the I love Manchester- we had the capital of Europe. Hacienda. Shopping is not a hobby of mine and is done more out of necessity than leisure. Yet it seems whenever I’m selling Manchester, to my prospective lady friend or as a destination for my European counterparts to visit I can’t help but boast about Selfridges, Harvey Nichol’s, Market Street, King Street, The Northern Quarter and The Arndale Centre. Manchester is the Mecca of North West shopping. Due to sheer size and concentration, competing with London is a no-no, but the phalanx of fashionistas and hipsters of the Northern Quarter do give our city some credibility in the fashion world.

VIVA i n t e r v i e w From paperboy to media mogul, Chris Evans, one of this country’s brightest and boldest personalities, tells James Davies the real story beyond the gale of the media spotlight.

Chris, we know a lot about your illustrious and incredibly successful career in broadcasting but we don’t know too much about your childhood and what you were like growing up. Can you tell me a little about your early years? I grew up on a council estate in Warrington, which was tough. Sadly, my Dad died prematurely- if you can say that about anyone dying at anytime- so life in the beginning was quite hard for me. Apart from that, my early life was great. But I’ve always had this desire to do well and to try and enjoy life. I think I’ve done that. Where did your interest in broadcasting come from? It came from listening to the radio and from watching the T.V. From Noel Edmonds Swap Shop, to Mike Reid’s breakfast show, to Timmy Mallet and from my brother who was a disc jockey at a club. But I think the light went on when I went to see Timmy Mallet do a road show at Old Trafford football ground. That was very exciting. I interviewed him, much like you’re doing to me, and asked him how I could get a job with him. Fortunately for me, there was a guy who was helping him who was leaving, so I wrote off for his job and got it. There was no money. I didn’t get paid for four years but it was experience you couldn’t buy and so that’s how the radio thing started. What was it like working with your hero? It was frightening. Primarily that’s the first thing I think when I think about working with Timmy because his show was so manic and so demanding and compelling and brilliant that to panic was the main ingredient to the night...for me at least. But I learnt so much. It was such a quick learning curb. Ninety per cent of what I do now is still based on what I learnt when I was working with him. Although you’ve been broadcasting for a number of years now, are you nervous about taking over from Sir Terry (Wogan)? It’s going to be a very tough gig. But it’s what I do for a living. It’s not like I’m being asked to play football for England. Although I do want to be the Wayne Rooney of Radio 2- I want to work hard for the team for ninety minutes and more.

You’ve had an incredibly successful career in both television and radio. What do you think makes a good broadcaster? Terry! He’s extremely articulate and confident. He’s got a fantastic voice, good dictation, and a brilliant education. He makes emails sparkle. He takes some pretty average material and makes it sing. I don’t know how he does it. What do your family and friends think of your success and all that you’ve been able to achieve because you’ve been incredibly successful haven’t you? I don’t know really. I don’t know what they think of it. I think they like it. I think my Mum likes it but I’m not sure. We don’t really talk about it to be honest. I’m from one of those families that keep your feet very firmly on the ground. My friends- I don’t really have many friends from when I was younger but I hope most people are happy for me. I imagine being in the public eye is an incredibly surreal experience, particularly when people want pictures and autographs. What do you like to do away from the spotlight? Oh god, it is. What I love to do is sit in my garage and smell the cars. I love smelling my cars. I know it sounds silly but I know exactly where I am when I’m doing that. I also like to be with my son and I like to have dinner and a glass of wine with my wife every night. That’s it really. Just the simple things. It wasn’t always that way though. In the 90’s I think it’s fair to say you enjoyed a night out? I did, but all the mayhem of the 90s wasn’t who I was – I was taken away with the times. I was living the rock star’s lifestyle, pulling women I’d never dreamt of and it was party time. I used to go out for days at a time and get smashed. I wasn’t an alcoholic, but I definitely had a problem. I did drink too much. And when you go to parties you do strange things – especially if they last for a while. Mine lasted anything between five and ten years. I didn’t really like it though. I like being on my own. How did living that sort of lifestyle affect you? I stopped putting the hours in and started to live the life. I’d become a self-important t**t. I thought I was invincible. I was utterly confident for all the wrong reasons. And now I’m confident for all the right reasons. Probably a bit less confident than I was then, even though I’ve got more to be confident about. I became an idiot when I thought I was moving on the same level as the bands and actors who came on TFI Friday. I thought I was part of Oasis, and what I am really is a facilitator. I forgot that. I’ve got back to why I loved radio in the first place, what I’m here for. I push the boundaries every day. We’re still being as creative, but not as loud and brash.

You’ve had some fantastic guests on your shows and were able to interview some quite remarkable people. From George Best to the Spice Girls, Pierce Brosnan to Tom Jones. What was that like? It was interesting and intriguing. Because the show was live I didn’t really have time to get into them. You’re talking to me for longer than I ever talked to any of those guests in four years. So it was fun but there wasn’t much depth to it. I got a sense of who people were but I didn’t really get into them like you are. This is a different sort of journalism- it’s more comprehensive. We had fun but I would have liked to have talked to them for longer. You mention George Best. What I remember most about George is when he came to my house. We had this football and he said ‘go on then, kick it to us’. I kicked it to him and it was unbelievable. He literally plucked it out of the air- amazing. He was like fifty odd. Did you ever imagine you would be as successful as you are and achieve all you have? It’s quite remarkable isn’t it? Well every single job I’ve ever had- maybe with the exception of one- I absolutely loved. I was a newsagent and I absolutely loved it. When I worked behind the bar at the Red Lion in Warrington I loved it. Even being a fork-lift truck driver was great. It’s all been great. But the success I’ve had is brilliant but it’s contemplative and what’s better than that is talking to you- the next generation. Success can get in the way though. It can be a bit of a heavy bag to carry. Would you ever consider going back into television? It’s not a question of whether I’m going to return to TV. It’s a question of whether TV is going to be there to be returned to. I would go back if we could come up with an idea that was different and new. When I was on Jonathan’s (Ross) show it was very exciting to be there but not for a second did I want to be Jonathan and I was quite relieved that I wasn’t. When you look back at your career I imagine you have some great memories and reflect fondly on it. Do you have any regrets? The only thing I regret in my life is the thing with my daughter because that’s huge and wrong. I was a selfish prick. I regret that, but there’s nothing I can do about it. What advice would you give to anyone wanting to break into broadcasting today and emulate, if possible, all you have been able to achieve? Take it one step at a time. Have an end goal in mind but don’t become self-important like I did. Always keep it simple and don’t over flower anything. Perhaps most importantly, don’t have any baggage. Keep re-doing things time and time and time again until you absolutely don’t have time to do it anymore because things can always get better. Harvey Nichols SPRING / SUMMER 10 FASHION SHOW In collaboration with Helen Steele

anchester’s Urbis Museum went under a total transformation for Harvey Nichols Spring/Summer 2010 fashion show this month. Its usual simple white walls and spacious interior became invaded with a herd of hot looking models, a crowd of fashionable folk, and an injection of bold colours splashed around the building. The bright and eye-catching venue provided the backdrop for Helen Steele’s collaboration with Harvey Nichols. The abstract Irish artist is renowned for her vivid and dramatic art work, where Steele creates astounding art pieces on canvas using acrylic paint applied with her hands. Helen’s creativity produced a unique stage for the show, with UV paint splattered along the runway, complete with theatre style curtains. After a champagne reception and an excited crowd rummaging through their Pinko goody bags (you know you’re being looked after when there’s free Versace face powder in the bag), the show began with ‘Playdate’, an introductory movie created by Helen Steele. The short screening featured Helen throwing paint at a model in a structured dress, sending a rainbow of neon

colours splattered across the dress. When the music pumped up and the UV paint came alive, the same paint splashed dress appeared on a model as she strutted down the runway to kick off the show. The beautiful, bold coloured background enhanced the clothing, as the audience got treated to eleven different clothing themes. They ranged from Feminine Military and Fairytale, which consisted of khaki and neutrals in layers of chiffon for a practical yet polished look, to Scuba Chic and Urban Cowboy, where the fashionista’s viewed an updated take on the checked shirt and cowboy boots trend, and a catwalk of seminaked male models scantily clad in swimming trunks. Amongst the audience sat Manchester’s best dressed fashionista’s, as well as our city’s very own soap stars. Coronation Street’s Michelle Keegan, Brooke Vincent and Nikki Patel all bagged their front row seats, with perfect viewing of Harvey Nichols key trends. The most noticeable showcased look had to be the collection dedicated solely to Alexander McQueen, entitled ‘Long Live McQueen’. His groundbreaking designs included an

eclectic mix of skull motif garments, bubble dresses and sports jackets. Key pieces included a McQueen blue exaggerated shoulder dress (£885), a vibrant coloured Roberto Cavalli print tunic (£495) and a Giambattista Valli fuschia dress (£1600), where the elegant styling and striking colours made a real fashion statement. For the men, double denim made a shocking appearance (usually seen as a fashion faux pas), proving it is acceptable to wear more than one denim garment this Spring, and Brit Pop inspired brights gave menswear a fresh look for this season. To finalise the show, the fashion hungry crowd fled back to the Harvey Nichols store, where guests were treated to a generous 10% discount off anything available in store. Cocktails were being shaken up on the second floor, before the Louboutins got slipped on and the crowds trotted to Barton Arcades exclusive Circle Club for a glamorous after party. words: Emma Campbell

ELEN STEELE ABSTRACT ARTIST

On Wednesday 10th March, Viva’s Emma Campbell headed down to Manchester’s Urbis Museum to catch up with Irish artist Helen Steele, to talk about bold coloured fashion, her creative flair and love for designer department store Harvey Nichols. She turns up looking glamorous dressed in silver sequins, sky scraper heels and long sleek blond hair. Helen looked every inch a fashion model than an artist who paints using her fingers....

As an artist you’re obviously very visual. How does your creativity reflect your wardrobe?

Who would you say are your favourite fashion designers and why?

I would like to think my wardrobe is very creative. I feel that if you’re a creative person and you have a background in the arts and fashion, then you’re always going to have a sense of creativity in your wardrobe. I would say the range of clothes I have always explore a range of trends.

I absolutely love Vivienne Westwood. Everything by Vivienne is so individual and unique, and I really love that about the designer. Also, I love Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan.

Your work is full of bold colours, with lots of paintings on canvas with neon acrylic paints. Do you like to dress yourself in bold colours too? Yes, I definitely have a love for bright clothing. There are clothes that I have painted myself that I wear, and I create a range of wrist cuffs which are painted in my acrylic paint designs (shows me her wrist, which displays a selection of yellow, blue and pink striped paint designed cuffs). As a child, did you always dream of becoming an artist? I did, I always knew I wanted to go into the art industry, and particularly as an artist. In school, I spent all my time drawing, painting scribbling. I have lots of memories being told off by my headmaster for doodling on anything I could get my hands on!

How would you describe your personal style? I would say that I like to style myself a little bit differently, I like to dress unique. At the same time though, I wear staple, stylish pieces, nothing too wild and crazy!

your best. It’s good to take on advice and if you follow it, it can lead you to success. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Harvey Nichols, they are so accommodating. They give me enough scope to do what I like. I originally started producing invitations for them, using my art work and designs for their printed media, then it lead to producing a short film for them to present at the fashion show for fashion inspiration, and then finally it lead to designing a fashion item (the dress seen on the short film made for Harvey Nichols). It has been brilliant.

Where do you seek inspiration? I have a big passion for the 60’s and all the elements of that era, so that always plays a big part in my inspiration. I’m also inspired by action art, the Viennese Actionism art. You have done exceptionally well with your art work, and to get the chance to work with Harvey Nichols is fantastic. What is the best piece of advice you have been given which has helped you get this far? I think the best pieces of advice I’ve been given so far is that what you put in is what you get out. It totally has truth in it. Also, to feel the fear and do it anyway. When you feel the fear kicking in with anything you do that’s when you know that it’s going to work. My advice to anyone would be to be true to yourself, and if you’re not, you will not produce to VIVA 32

Finally, would you see yourself working with fashion again? What are your future goals? Absolutely, I have enjoyed it so much, I would love the chance to work with fashion again. I think art and fashion go together so well. And as for future goals, I would like to go into Harvey Nichols and buy everything! Even just half the shop! I love it there, and they are everywhere now, Dublin too... And after this, I’m heading to London for an exhibition called Fashion Fusion at Brick Lane for two days. with Take Two Style School

ake Two style school have launched and are bringing a world of glamour, style and confidence to groups of teenage girls from Manchester. They have been working with G-Force, a charity that aims to help children and adults from disadvantaged areas, running workshops which aim to have the girls looking and feeling great. From health, fitness, grooming and etiquette, to girly tasks like hair and makeup, and learning to walk the catwalk, it all leads to boosting the girls’ self esteem and giving them the encouragement they need to succeed in life. The eight week course gave a group of 15 teenage girls the confidence to learn a range of new skills, and put them into practise with a fashion show held at Altrincham’s Cresta Court Hotel in March. The fashion show gave the girls a glimpse into a life of glamour, with the show being hosted by Galaxy 102’s very own Wingman, and live performances by indie band No Flash and R&B group Platnum. The girls dressed up in new fashions by retailers such as Debenhams, Coast,

New Look, Superdry and Warehouse to name but a few. The girls are taught by international supermodel Alex Leigh, who teaches the girls her photo shoot posing skills. After weeks of practising Alex’s poses and spending time with top fashion photographers, the girls learn to strut their stuff on the catwalk in time for a grande finale catwalk where friends and family are invited to watch. Sara Lee from G-Force says “The girls are having a fantastic time with Take Two Style School. They are constantly learning new skills and you can see their confidence growing by the minute.” All proceeds from the show went to the G-Force charity and the Altrincham festival. VIVA o n t h e c a t w a l k Join us as we round up the key looks for Spring/Summer 2010 with help from a selection of British and International trendleading designers including Betty Jackson, Herve Leger, Jasper Conran, Alice by Temperley, Ashley Isham, Twenty8Twelve and Jaeger London. TRENDS... CANDY ROCK: Light, airy, white with accents of mouth-watering pastels dominated the catwalks for Spring Summer 2010. The intricate floral cutwork in leather and chiffon at Jasper Conran was a highlight of London Fashion Week, the entire collection in subtle shades of white, nude and the palest pink. Luella featured pastels, bows and cutout hearts for ultimate girl appeal, with layers of candy box chiffons and embroideries at Christopher Kane and Dior. Burberry Prorsum showed a delectable array of textures and drapes in muted hues to evoke those hazy summers day feelings, along with pastel dyed denims at Hilfiger and Levis, for those casual days at the seaside. SWALLOWS & AMAZONS: From the luxurious layers, ruffles and textures on the catwalk from Charles Anastase, to the ever prevalent Breton stripes at Clements Ribeiro and frostfrench. This trend combines layered mismatched pieces of luxe and denim with classic nautical tailoring and gothic leather. Mixing denim and colourful cottons at Twenty8Twelve gave an effortlessly cool London edge to this trend, with the eighties favourite ‘Double Denim’ making a come back at American stalwart Ralph Lauren. Westwood continues the trend for pirate inspired asymmetry and drapery; with crinolines and suspenders thrown into the mix for the more flamboyant girl. With luscious layers from Reem giving the goth rock edge to stop the trend getting too girly. VINTAGE GLAMOUR: And the winner is.........You! ust as summer appears to have arrived we all think about jetting off and relaxing for a week in some far away haven, I’m not sure where the logic in that is, but it’s not stopping me. So when it comes round to packing our gorgeous new holiday bikini and summer dresses we are faced with the unavoidable dilemma of how to get it all into one airline approved bag that does not exceed x number of kilos and meets their precise and non-negotiable size restrictions. Time to think strategically, as Viva shows you how to maximise your holiday wardrobe whilst avoiding those outrageous luggage fees.

The first place to shave off a few pounds is with your luggage itself, we know how gorgeous your leather weekend bag is, but it weighs too much, and at a time when weight means everything every pound counts. his season menswear takes a backwards turn to the 90’s, drawing influence from sportswear, nylon and a bright block colour palette. Think Fresh Prince of Bel Air meets G.I Jones and you’re on the right track. LOOK 1: WOMEN’S DAY Inspired by New York’s Downtown Bohemians, this voluminous style can be easily achieved on any graduated bob shape or under-cut. TECHNIQUE: Take rough sections of about 1 inch. Lifting the hair up, comb through, apply some Clynol Flatter (iron spray) and curl right down to the root. Brush the hair through. Then using a Clynol Fibre form (shaping gum) let it casually flop about or backcomb the roots and fix with Clynol Free Flow (flexible spray) for high ‘frothy’ curls.

LOOK 2: WOMEN’S EVENING Al fresco dinners, garden parties or evening strolls on the beach are the perfect opportunity to give yourself this breezy, summer style on long or mid length hair. TECHNIQUE: This is simpler than it looks! Apply Kevin Murphy Anti Gravity (oil free volumiser) to damp hair and rough dry. Using sections of about 1-2 inches, hold the hair away from the head and twist from roots to ends. Hold onto the end of just a few hairs with one hand then push the rest down to the roots, creating a ‘rouched’ effect. Secure with two hair grips, one crossing over the other. Leave some hair at the sides and back to be lightly backcombed, for a light, airy texture. Finish with Kevin Murphy Session Spray.

Feeling dandy and ready to impress? 10 minutes with a hair dryer and you can step out with this hybrid quiff.

TECHNIQUE: Prepare your hair with American Crew firm hold styling gel for volume and support. Using any hairbrush, blow-dry all the hair up and away from the face. When dry apply some American Crew forming cream for hold and a natural sheen. Brush all the hair back, then brush the sides up to the top and knock the front down.

LOOK 4: MEN’S DAY This 1950’s inspired style is a great casual, textured look for any short haircut. TECHNIQUE: Apply some Clynol Swirl (curl definer) to damp hair to define the texture. Using a hair dryer and your fingers, dry the hair forward then up at the front. Finish off with Clynol Shape (gel wax) for shine and hold.

YOGA Yoga is the practice of uniting the body, the mind and the breath to create harmony and health within. It is achieved by learning to master a variety of postures, breathing practices, methods of concentration and relaxation techniques.

here are many aspects to yoga, but probably the most well known aspect is the postures. In Sanskrit – which is the language of yoga - they are known as asana. The postures are stretching and strengthening movements, which are practiced with specific breathing patterns to help ease the body into each posture. If practised regularly, the postures can increase strength, flexibility and ease of movement and they can decrease tension, excess levels of stress and general aches and pains. They improve the health of the body, but also have great benefits for the mind.

quieten the mind, calm the emotions and bringabout a feeling of health, harmony and peace. Yoga has been around for thousands of years. There is archaeological evidence of it existing as far back as 3000 BC and there are ancient texts, which go back to 1500 BC. It started in India and initially spread across to China, Japan and other Eastern countries. Much more recently, within the last 100 years, it spread to the West and people in Britain began to discover the benefits of practicing yoga. There are many types of yoga and many styles of teaching. You may have heard of Hatha Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Viniyoga – that focus on the physical postures with breathing practices and usually relaxation too. You many not have heard of Bikram Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Kriya Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga – less well-known types that focus on one particular aspect of the practices. There are many others too.

The separate breathing practices – known as pranayama - bring more awareness to how the breath flows in and out of the body. There are various techniques, which are practised for different purposes. Firstly, to improve the breathing - essential for many people, as often people do not realise how poorly they breathe. It is very difficult for the body to be healthy if the breathing habits are not good. Secondly, to soothe the nervous system – helping to bring greater health to the many complex systems within the body. Thirdly, to calm and quieten the mind – reducing anxiety and worries.

Yoga is suitable for anyone, of any age and any ability. It’s not just for women, so guys do give it a go. There are classes to suit all levels and the teacher will be able to adapt the postures and breathing practices to suit the individual student where necessary. If you would like to start practising yoga, do find a good teacher and look for a style that suits you. It really is worth trying a few different classes, so that you can gain experience and make an informed choice.

The practice of concentration – known as dharana – is a wonderful antidote to the mass of distractions that surround us all on a dayto-day basis. The mind learns to become less scattered and more focused, gaining an ability to bring control over distracting thoughts to create a feeling of calm stability.

Some styles of yoga use various pieces of equipment to help you get into the yoga postures, but to get started, you actually need very little equipment, just a yoga mat - and even that may be provided by the teacher. You will need to wear loose, comfortable, warm clothing.

At the end of most yoga sessions there will be a deep relaxation practice – known as yoga nidra in Sanskrit. The relaxation allows time for the whole of the body, mind and breath to settle, to relax deeply and to absorb the benefits and changes that have taken place throughout the yoga session. This lasts about 10 minutes and for many people, it feels like the best part of the yoga session.

EAST M E E T s WEST he East and the West. The East versus the West. Call it what you want, there will always be some sort of issue regarding how the two can be connected, how the cultures are completely different, or even debating over which is ‘the better one’.One thing is for certain; there are definitely influences between the two, where culture has played a massive part in shaping one of their societies. Taking into consideration lifestyle factors, such as fashion, foods, interiors and music, the ways in which the Eastern culture has influenced our Western society are starting to become more obvious. Fashion is a major subject in to the Western society, it is a hugely successful industry over here, and is probably the most obvious aspect which visually shows the Eastern influence spreading over to the West. Western clothing generally demonstrates a casual feel because it is basically a secular society. Be proud to be from the West as it is known as a trendsetter of the present fashion world, we are known for our regular attire of t-shirts, jeans, skirts, pants… you know, the usual. Formal wear is confined to three piece suits and doesn’t really get much more experimental than that. As for religion, well that doesn’t even come into the fashion equation, religion has no say in what us Westerners wear and it certainly doesn’t define our fashion. What does define our fashion though, is anything comfortable and trendy, and Europeans

pretty much follow the same trend. Eastern fashion on the other hand is built on religious beliefs, cultural obligations and traditions. These factors play a huge part in determining the dress code of Eastern society. Tradition and customary dressing is considered a vital thing in order to preserve what the Eastern mind believes in, and inherent in this is a desire to pass this legacy on from generation to generation. However, in recent times, the East and West have started to adopt a new, modernised view on clothing, which is a blend of all cultures brought together. It’s hard to pin-point the exact time when the East started to meet the West, but a good place to start looking is the 1920’s when Japanese men began wearing Hakama’s and the women sported kimonos. Shortly after, Kimono’s and their comfortable style took off in the West. Vogue magazine has reflected these Eastern influences, displaying Malaysian prints by designer Hattie Carnegie on the front cover in a 1940’s issue. A few years on in 1965, designer kaftans and chalwar trousers also made an appearance on Vogue’s front cover. These Eastern fashions were being published in the ultimate fashion bible, making a statement that Eastern influenced garments were going to be a big deal for the Western fashion scene.

nd that was just the beginning. With lots of inspiration to choose from; India, Pakistan, China, near and far East, Japan, Asia and Indonesia, Western designers were suddenly in their element. Luxurious materials like silks, velvets, brocades, some woven with real silver or gold threads, were available for use in Western fashion designs. Fabrics from the East have fine embroideries, sheer linens and fine cottons, and this gave more scope for designers in the West to push the boundaries on their fashion and start borrowing some Eastern splendour. Asian fashion designer Mani Kohu has a lot to do with the Asian influence on the Western fashion scene. It can be said that British Asian fashion is down to her, after she opened her first store, Khubsoorat, in 1985. Mani is responsible for introducing rich zardosi embroidery and crystallised sahris on bridal catwalks in the Western world. She learnt the clothing trade in London, and her son followed in her footsteps by graduating in fashion at London College of Fashion, before launching Khubsoorats menswear. Celebrity endorsement went down a treat with the brand, when international superstar Jay Sean promoted the Khubsoorat menswear, giving the Asian fashion brand a push into Western society. Mani then created a collection for 2002 film hit Bend it like Beckham, and soon had a string of celebs knocking at the door for her custom made Asian inspired pieces. This lead to Mani working with Myleene Klass, and gaining worldwide recognition. And it doesn’t stop there. Modern day designers can’t seem to get enough of the world of swirling paisley prints, mirror work and bejewelled flip flops. Karl Lagerfeld’s Eastern themed collection for Chanel hit the catwalks in December 2009, and is backed up with a beautifully designed advertising campaign featuring Chinese influences and Indian toucheseastern fashion is going from strength to strength over here.

e went crazy for bindhi’s after Madonna sported one for her Frozen video, and Boyzone were spotted with decorative henna painted on their bodies, leading us into the work of henna body art which is now a popular form of body art over in the West. The pashmina palaver started many years ago, but even to this day it can still be seen out on the high street and on celebrities. Our Western winters wouldn’t be the same without a trusty pashmina to wrap around our shoulders. Even brands such as Swarovski have a lot to do with Eastern influences. We may think that we have always loved the shiny bling of Swarovski

crystals, but this popular brand of crystals has only succeeded over in the West due to the Eastern culture’s jewellery society beginning to rub off at this end. Western women have worn tiny jewelled anklets, dangling tikkas and crystal headdresses for years and years. It did not follow a fashion trend; it was the general, accepted norm for how Eastern women should dress. They believed that some of the gemstones they wore brought them different aspects to live, such as love, peace or wellbeing. As the Western society opened its mind to this way of living, we have accepted the jewelled fashion here, and it’s now an everyday fashion feature for Western women.

t is actually down to the Eastern countries such as India and Asia that jewellery is such a huge part to our daily fashion lives. India was the first culture to discover the art of bead making where they would dig to find rough stones. This then become a local trade for Indians, where people became rough stone traders. When the stones were bought, they would be placed into hot ovens until the stones turned to rich colours such as deep reds and burnt oranges. After polishing, the finishing results were beautiful colourful beads, and Indian children were taught this method from a young age. As time moved on, the Indian culture become popular for its production of glass and clay jewellery. And again, this caught on in the West. Eastern weddings were saw by the Western society, with the people dressed head to toe in crystals, beads and stones. This is how brands such as Swarovski have gained such inspiration for their collections, turning Indian culture into a fashion phase for the Western world. One of the most recent turning points for the Eastern influence has to be the release of Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Danny Boyleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production held a soundtrack rich in Bollywood sounds; the playlists featured typical Indian music and sounds. Successful girl group the Pussycat Dolls featured on the soundtrack, promoting a taste of Eastern music, which has

become acceptable and popular over in the West. This style of music has also led to a change in lifestyle choices for the Western world, with the rise of Bollywood dancing lessons becoming a popular past time and keep fit regime for ladies. Slumdog Millionaire has left its mark on viewers for its stunning portrayal of life in Mumbai. The rich culture and images has influenced Western design, and is stirring up in interior design as well as fashion. The textile industry has reacted with high watt colors and rich patterns that will appeal to a broad audience. This has been applied to interiors in the same way as fashion, home ware trends for 2010 proved to be going in the direction of an Indian summer theme, focusing on sequins and metallic threads, with a colour palette of fuchsias, oranges and yellows. Stores such as IKEA have began to sell Indian inspired home wares, such as banana leaf shaped plates to reflect the banana leaves that Eastern people have to eat from. And it seems not only have the Eastern cultures shown the West their dazzling fashion styles, beautiful jewellery and lifestyle aspects, but they have also influenced us in our very own kitchens.

he Western diet is purely a free willed way of life. We can eat whatever we like. If we chose to be vegetarian, we can. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to. Our supermarkets are filled with millions of different types of foods and brands that we are actually spoilt for choice in what to eat. As a society we are not ruled to eat certain foods due to religion, we are simply given the go ahead to eat whatever we like. This has lead us to greedily eat rich meats, dairy products, and fruits and vegetables to our hearts content. As a result of this, though, our hearts are actually not all that content! The Western society, in particularly the US, has not known its limits, and the increasing amount of high-fat products in our diets has caused death rates to rise in the Western society. The Eastern diet has changed since incomes have become higher, traditional diets are mainly based on plant food, but have developed by incorporating rice, grain foods, shellfish and seaweeds. The ways the Japanese eat were leading them to live long and healthy lives; their adapted diet of raw fish and rich vegeta-

bles gave Eastern society the number one spot for healthy living. When scientists looked into the food habits of the East and West, only one thing was clear â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that Eastern diets were producing a more healthy way of living, and this diet had to fast become Westernised. Now we are blown away by the amount of sushi bars we see over here, they have simply become a norm to our dining out lifestyle. It is fair to say that Eastern society has definitely made a massive impact on Western life. It seems that there is a lot of inspiration for the Eastern culture, and we Westerners are not afraid to use it. It is probably not practical to say that in years to come, we will all be wearing salwar kameez and bherkaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, after all, our religion is our religion and no amount of Eastern inspiration can change our set values and beliefs. But the aspects from the East are constantly coming over here, and our open mindedness to this culture has made a change to the West for the better. he new apple iphone, in competition with google’s new range of mobiles, has made some pretty good changes and will be launched this summer. For starters, it comes with new OS 4 which includes the option of upgrading to the older iphones and ipod. It’s also got loads of new features like multi-tasking, the iAd advertising feature, and the social gaming network feature which results in the phone having ten times the number of games available for traditional hand-held consoles like the Nintendo DS and Sony’s PSP. There’s also good news for book-worms, in the form of the new iphone application iBooks which can download and read all electronic books and transfer them between both iphones and ipads using wireless synchronisation between two devices. Apple’s new OS promises improved mail functionality that will let users funnel incoming mail from multiple email accounts into a single inbox. The new OS will also let users thread their messages by conversation, making it easier to stay on top of email discussions, as well as open email attachments. Other new features include: larger fonts for email, texts and alerts; tap to focus video; Bluetooth keyboards; birthday calendar; web search suggestions and search text messages. An interesting addition to the OS is folder support. According to Apple, this feature will let users simply drag one app icon onto another and a new folder will automatically be created. The folder will automatically get a name based on the app store category of that app. And finally, the new iPhone gets a camera update, the upcoming model will have a 5x digital zoom. Other new features include the ability to create music playlists on the phone.

s World Cup frenzy descends on South Africa, the country has been propelled into the spotlight. Luckily the country with the 3000km shoreline and a population of nearly 60 million is hosting games in nine different cities – giving each strand of the rainbow nation a time to shine.

Culture The very nature of the ‘rainbow nation’ (the phrase coined by Desmond Tutu in 1994) is it’s ethnic diversity. One of the most multicultural countries in the world, South Africa has 11 official languages (luckily for you, English is one of them). Ethnicity is something which continues to ring true in South Africa as the apartheid regime, in which a white minority ruled the black majority, ended only 15 years ago. The country is outstanding at documenting and displaying its apartheid history – see for yourself by visiting The Hector Pieterson museum or braving the tours of smaller townships and informal settlements, where the natives will tell you the true story. Another positive effect of South Africa’s multiculturalism is the diverse food you can gorge yourself on. Indian ‘bunny chow’ curry, Portuguese peri peri chicken or traditional South African boerewors (spicy sausages) cooked on a braai (barbecue) – why choose just one? You’re on holiday after all! Landscape South Africa’s scenic wonders are legendary. From snow-capped peaks to searing hot deserts and a warm, never-ending coastline – make sure you get snap-happy at South Africa’s sights. Particular must-sees include Table Mountain (a mountain which looks like a table, obviously) which overlooks the largest of the three capitals, Cape Town. Save yourself the worry of falling off by keeping safe in a cable car. God’s Window is another popular vantage point where on a clear day you can see, well, pretty much everything – including the Kruger National Park. This also deserves a visit; you can’t argue with the ultimate South African Safari on land the size of Wales where accommodation with an elephant view starts from as little as £30 a night.

Climate Some locals are already chuckling at the idea of Britons pouring off planes in sunglasses, T-shirts and shorts for World Cup season. This is because the June to July timing of the competition is the southern hemisphere’s winter that, although has typically dry and sunny days, can drop to well below zero at night. The winters are short, so be aware that few buildings bother with insulation or central heating (i.e. avoid stubborn British tourist syndrome and just pack a jumper for God’s sake). Confusingly, South Africa is a climatically diverse country, where you can expect heat and humidity in Durban and Bloemfontein but cold and wet weather in Johannesburg and Cape Town at the same time. For the warmest winter weather head for the coast to feel temperatures hit the 20’s. Oh, but not the coast of the Western Cape, as that gets the majority of its rainfall in winter. Like we said, pack a jumper just in case. And maybe a light raincoat. Transport The country’s public transport system is, how should we put it, a bit of a work in progress. A public bus system has just been launched in Johannesburg, with other cities to follow, but

proved controversial. Johannesburg is also building a partially underground railway, the Gautrain, linking airports, suburbs and hotel hubs, but it’s touch and go whether it will be ready for World Cup kick-off. Your best bet are probably taxis (as they are generally safe and dependable), intercity rail services (which can be comfortable and convenient despite their bad representation in Oscar winning film, Tsotsi) and coaches (where the biggest danger is being splashed with cheap cider as an English football fan misses his mouth). Another option is a hire car, where you can take advantage of the country’s sane decision to drive on the left by cruising along the spectacular Garden Route on the South-East coast. Security We don’t want to sound like your mum, but with over half a million visitors expected to descend on the country come World Cup time, staying safe is key. The rule is: it’s sensible to be cautious, but not paranoid. It’s true that crime should not be taken lightly – Foreign Office advice says South Africa has a very high level of crime but, on the upside, the authorities give a high priority to protecting tourists and adds that the risk to visitors travelling to main tourist destinations is low. TABBOULEH SALAD INGREDIENTS:

225 g of cracked wheat 50 g of parsley finely chopped 4 spoons of lemon juice 2 large beef tomatoes 4 cucumbers finely chopped 4 tablespoons of extra virgin oil Salt and black pepper

METHOD: Place the cracked wheat into a bowl and cover it with plenty of cold water and leave for approximately 20 minutes. When the grains have softened, put them into the sieve, drain and squeeze hard to extract as much water as possible. Shake the wheat into a deep bowl and stir in the parsley followed by the lemon juice and 1½ teaspoons of salt to combine thoroughly. Meanwhile, skin and halve the tomatoes, squeeze out the seeds before chopping the flesh quite small and adding to the bowl containing the wheat. Next, add the mint, cucumber and olive oil to the salad and mix to combine everything. Season with salt and pepper. Serve piled straight on a plate lined with some crisp lettuce leaves.

CHICKEN SKEWER INGREDIENTS:

700 grams of chicken breast 2 branches of laurel 12 slices of pancetta salt

METHOD: Cut the chicken breast (already cleaned and boneless) into strips about 1cm thick and then cut the slices of pancetta in half. Now just put on 8 skewers (3 pieces distributed in each) chicken strips, pancetta and bay leaves. Season the skewers with salt and barbecue for 25 minutes.

PASSION FRUIT MOUSSE METHOD: Blend all the ingrients in a blender for about 10 minutes. After put the mixture in a bowl and put in the fridge for at least 1 hour before serving. When serving add some spoons of the passion fruit juice on the top. Decorate with some mint leaves.

METHOD: You can not enjoy a Brazilian style BBQ to its full potential without washing it down with the famous Tropeiro Prenda Caipirinha... Place the lime and sugar into a cocktail mixer and using a muddle (or the end of a wooden rolling pin), squeeze and mash the limes and sugar into a paste. Add ice and then pour the cachaca on top of the ice cubes. Add the vodka, mango puree and the red chilli cover the cocktail mixer with its lid and shake 8-10 times. Pour in a glass and enjoy.

One Monday in April, we at Viva visited Manchester’s Akbar restaurant to try the food. Immediately, we were welcomed by the friendly waiters who made us feel relaxed. The vibrant atmosphere hit us as soon as we arrived with the warm lighting and first class decor. The restaurant is extremely well presented which is mirrored through the exceptional food that is served. The menu caters for all different tastes ranging from a variety of Balti dishes, sea food and vegetarian dishes, dry meats and hot and mild curries all at great prices. Every day, the Chef prepares different Handi dishes to give the customers the opportunity to sample a different Handi dish

everyday. Our total meal including drinks, starter and mains came to a total of £55 for 4 people. The starters we had were; - Chicken Nambali- the chicken was tender marinated and topped with melted cheese, calamari special, grilled salmon, and Lamb chops. The mains included the Seafood Balti- this was exceptional and described as being the best seafood dish in the sub continent, chicken Balti, chicken Tikka Makhani- ideal for delicate tastes as the Tikka is tender and mild, and a Balti Lazeez. All the food was delicious and it was clear to see why Akbar’s has an amazing reputation. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the whole experience of true South Asian cuisine. Boasting the largest stock of champagne in the UK, Epernay is fast gaining a reputation in Manchester as the cocktail bar of choice for those wishing to enjoy chic surroundings and topnotch cocktails without paying the ‘sky high’ prices of Cloud 23 – or indeed enduring the queue. It has a relaxed vibe and the super friendly bar staff soon shake off any notion that this place is pretentious. After picking my way through the extensive menu I opted for the Jane Mansfield which, like its name sake, is a bubbly bombshell of a number, mixing fresh strawberries with champers and a twist of rum. Usually I’m of the belief that it’s a sin to tamper in any way with the water of the gods but I was totally won over by this sexy tipple, which I could well imagine sipping by a pool in Hollywood in the 1950’s.

Walrus in the Northern Quarter, with its amazing value lunchtime bento boxes and equally brilliant rice dishes, is a haven of retro minimalism and turquoise tones. Happy hour runs between 5pm and 7pm weekdays where cocktails are half price – this is great value when you see the skill that goes into them! Today, with spring in full swing, I tried a Hard Candya seriously zesty knickerbocker of fruity flavours that, on a hot day, is just what the doctor ordered. The drink looks just as retro as the decor and is just as refreshing as a cold shower - great for cleansing the palate after food before moving on to sample some more!

Next stop: Space. Famed for its roof terrace and BBQ, this great little bar nestles in on New Wakefield Street, which on May bank holiday will be taken over by the Euroculture festival. Graffiti artists, breakdancers and DJ’s will descend from around the globe drawing an eclectic crowd - entry is usually a few pounds at most. This two day party has become synonymous with the start of summer in the Manchester events calendar. In keeping with the season I had a Red Rabbit which if you like Amaretto you will love - although one too many might get a bit sickly - but isn’t that the case with all alcohol!? Its super sweet marzipan flavour is mixed with the fizziness of the ginger beer to create an all round winner of a drink.

Tom Lloyd, Obsidian’s very own bartender of the year will lead you through the maze of instructions and ingredients, providing you with everything you need to know to mix, muddle, and shake. Two of us from Viva Magazine were lucky enough to be invited down and get our hands dirty to see if we had what it takes to whip up some delicious cocktails and maybe even create our very own Viva cocktail… The cocktail class began with a brief introduction and history of cocktail making, things such as learning the many possible origins of the word “cocktail”. The most likely being that in colonial times, the taverns would keep casks, or “cocks” of rum, brandy, whiskey and gin, behind the bar. As the liquid ran out, the dregs ‘or Tails’ were put into a separate cask and sold at a reduced price. People would ask for “cocktailings”, that’s right we were paying attention! Tom then went on to demonstrate four cocktails of our choice and gave us his bar tenders top tips. Then we were let loose behind the bar to practice our newly learnt skills! Once we had created our chosen cocktails it was time for the best bit, sampling our new skills and enjoying a group tasting of our four delicious cocktails, Porn Star Martini, English Country Garden, A Schoolboy Error and our very own Viva cocktail. FOOTBALL STARS HELP RAISE NEARLY £60,000 FOR THE FIVE STARS APPEAL. A team of footballers headed up by Shay Given are at the top of the culinary league, after thrashing the opposition 2-1 in a unique cookery showdown. The 12 football stars took part in an exclusive Premiership Cook Off event at Panacea Bar and Restaurant in Alderley Edge, sponsored by Bentley Manchester, to raise funds for local charity the Five Stars Appeal. The two teams went head to head in the kitchen where the likes of Wayne Bridge and Micah Richards took a blow torch to a brulee and Carlo Nash plus Nigel de Jong got cheeky with a Bellini cheesecake. The footballers, wearing pristine chef whites without a grass stain in sight, cooked and served three courses and cocktails to the lucky guests. After each course diners voted for their favourite dish, which resulted in Shaun’s Team bringing home the cup while Carlo’s Team were handed a red card. The evening was hosted by Robbie Savage and ex Manchester City player Nicky Summerbee, who had the guests eating out of their hands as they exchanged some lively banter with the

football stars while interviewing them for the cameras. Guests enjoyed being served delicious cocktails by ladies’ favourite Roque Santa Cruz while Wigan’s Titus Bramble did an amazing job serving up the culinary delights. The auction was kicked off by Key103’s Mike Toolan and Hugh Ferris who whipped up a frenzy of excitement. Prizes included a Ricky Hatton Training Day bought by Shaun Wright-Phillips for £4,600 and a Rob Lloyd Racing Day bought by Roque Santa Cruz for £2,100. Harvey Nichols provided luxury goody bags and ex Manchester City player Jim Whitley provided the entertainment by showing off his vocal skills. Once the auction had ended the guests and footballers enjoyed a VIP after party, cheering on Shaun Wright-Phillips as he took to the decks as DJ for the night. Joe Akka, Managing Director for Panacea, comments: “It was an absolutely fantastic evening and the players proved they are every bit as good in the kitchen as they are on the football field. hursday 1st of April saw the start of the Easter weekend and the debut of the ‘Billionaire Boys Club’ night at the glamorous Circle Club. And what a way to kick off the weekend in style! The special Easter Bunny party oozed sex appeal as ladies tottered around in their skimpy bunny outfits, whilst the gents were all suited and booted, making up a totally chic and trendy crowd. Initially the night was a slow burner, but gone midnight the dance floor was in full swing with bodies popping to the R n’ B sounds of Rhianna and Jay Sean infused with dance tracks such as Calvin Harris’ Flashback. There really was something for everyone. Celebs in attendance included Big Brother stars Craig Phillips, newlyweds Grace Adams-Short and Mikey Dalton, Shipwrecker Markus Hafner, singer Pierre Lewis and new recording artist, Lil H. However this night was all about Manchester’s young, hot and fabulous. The Easter party was still going strong well into the early hours of Good Friday and it is safe to say that the night was a resounding success. It most definitely has paved the way for more of its kind in the future, demonstrating once and for all that there is only one way to party in style: Billionaire Boys Club style!

he eagerly awaited new addition to the dining scene in West Didsbury, Albert’s restaurant and bar open on Friday 30 April 2010. The new restaurant is the second Albert’s opening, and is a sister restaurant to Albert’s Shed in Castlefield, in Manchester city centre.

The new space, which has been created from the old Barleycorn pub site on Barlow Moor Road in Didsbury, aims to provide South Manchester with a slick, modern space with dining for 160 guests inside and will also feature a fabulous outside dining terrace for 60 – perfect for alfresco dining this summer.

The menu is modern British with an eclectic mix of Albert’s favourites and dishes from around the globe, all using only fresh local ingredients. The restaurant will be open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, and, in a first for Albert’s, will be offering a full brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays. The new restaurant will also be using local suppliers such as JB Richardsons bakers in Chorlton and Reserve Wine Merchants in West Didsbury. Those seeking liquid refreshment will not be disappointed – Alberts has a large bar area which is hoping to attract both diners and non diners and will feature everything from cocktails to real ales from the Marble Brewery.

MANCHESTER TATTOO SHOW MARCH 2010 Manchester Central played host to The Manchester International Tattoo Show in March which was in its 9th successful annual year.

selection of over 110 tattoo artists from around the globe came together for one special weekend, including some of England’s finest- Dan Gold, Sista Sammy, Mark The Shark and Nicole Lowe. Manchester Central was heaving over the two days with Hells Angels, tattoo fanatics and sexy hot tattooed women all there for the same reason, to add another piece of tattoo heaven artwork to their body’s collection. INTERESTING: We got chatting to Tony Slodger, an exclusive UK custom hand built tattoo machine maker. Tony told us that his tattoo machines were made up from pieces of an alarm bell like the one in the picture opposite! So as well as being able to get a tattoo or a history lesson about tattooing the show also featured VANS half pipe, which throughout the weekend showed demo’s from BMX’ers Jon Taylor and Zack Williams, plus some extreme half piping form skaters Marc Chruchill, Greg Nowik and Rogie. OUR FAVOURITE STAND: Tit4Tat had a stand which is a newly formed charity, working in conjunction with Pennine Acute Hospital Link4Pink. tattoo machine that will enable patients to have an areola tattooed on after breast reconstructive surgery. Raffle tickets were being sold for the cause, and prizes included custom design VANS shoes(designed by award winning tattooist Dan Gold), a custom made corset (donated by Black Pearl Treasures) and a pair of Lynard Skynard concert tickets. We’re not sure who won, but it wasn’t us- boo!

Limb is a unique rang of corsets dresses and outerwear, from retro frocks and nautical dresses, to lolita and tea dresses. Limbs is seriously any tattooed princesses closet heaven. BOON VS BROOKS A new beer a new record. CLINT BOON It was one of those emails that I had to read a few times. “Clint, do you mind if we make a special real ale in your honour? We want to call it ‘Boon Army’. You can pretty much design it the way you want it to taste”. The email came from a couple of people from the management team at Wetherspoons in Oldham, Eric Fulham and Rachel Wren ………..who came up with the idea. Within days I found myself at Greenfield Real Ale Brewery explaining to the owners (Peter and Tony... lovely, passionate blokes, think ‘beer scientists’) how I’d like the Boon Army Ale to taste. I think my brief was ‘something, golden, light and a bit fruity’. The kind of ale I could enjoy on a night of dj-ing. ‘DJ Juice!’ The launch night for the Boon Army Ale went really well. Real ale enthusiasts, locals and fans of 97.7 XFM turned out at Wetherspoons ‘Up Steps Inn’ in Oldham to have the first taste of the brew along with my wife, Charlie (6 months preggers = designated driver) and my mum, Marie (73 and enjoying a rare night out).

As you read this, Boon Army Real Ale will be on sale at most Wetherspoons across the area and will soon be ‘rolled out’ to other watering holes. Jessie Rose Hancock is a young lady from Stockport who’s about to crash into the music industry like the overwhelming breath of fresh air it needs. With her band, The Jessie Rose Trip she’s making music which is inspired by blues, jazz, funk & rock yet retains a totally contemporary feel in these days of Plan B, the Noisettes and (dare I say it...) Amy. I defy anybody to put a more talented individual in front of us than Jessie Rose. The band is brilliant, but in Jessie, there’s something unique. A multi instrumentalist with the most distinctive voice and, best of all, the most infectious and magnetic personality. It’s something I’ve not seen since Lisa Stansfield. So refreshingly down to earth. That incredible world class talent that usually comes packaged with extreme complications and

unpleasant idiosyncrasies (Amy again). The world is about to hear about The Jessie Rose Trip. Their new single ‘You Won’t Forget Me Boy’ is out now on Garden Records. Have a great summer, Clint GARETH BROOKS I can’t believe that we’re into May already! Where the hell have the last few months gone and why is it that when you get older, the time just flies by? Anyway readers, I hope you’re well and enjoying the warmer weather. So for the first time in a while, I’ll agree with Clint and what he’s saying about Jessie. Jayne (my gorgeous girlfriend and future wife) and I went along to see Jessie at Sound Control a couple months ago, and she totally blew us away. Great tunes and presence, will take Jessie a long way. I’ve been listening to Massive Attack’s new album ‘Heligoland’ pretty much non-stop since its release in March. A lot of people say it’s a real return to form for the boys from Bristol, but for me, they’ve never made a bad album. There are

guest appearances from Damon Albarn, Martina Topley-Bird and Manchester’s own Guy Garvey. ‘Girl I Love You’, ‘Psyche’ and track 10 ‘Atlas Air’ really are something special and I would definitely suggest that you go purchase this fine album. If like me, you were lucky enough to see Massive Attack play in Castlefield in 2008, I’m sure you’ll have bought it already anyway. Another album that’s blown me away recently is the new Gil ScottHeron album ‘I’m New Here’. It’s not the longest of records, but it’s an incredible listen. o if you haven’t heard the news already, Peter Hook has recently opened a new club called FAC251, located along Princess St at what used to be the notorious Factory Records. After attending the opening party (which was off the hook, by the way) we decided to get a few answers out of Hooky. Here’s what he had to say... VIVA: What made you come up with the idea of opening the old Factory Records HQ as a club? HOOKY: The idea for a club came about before the premises. It was half hearted at first, but when the building became available I really got into the idea. VIVA: Was there any other direction you were going to go with the building or was it always going to be a club? HOOKY: It was an office originally and I always thought it would make a great club! Twice on its own and now once with me! The Hussy! VIVA: What do you think Tony Wilson would have said about you turning the base of Factory Records in to a night club? HOOKY: I’m hoping he would say “Go for it! Make back all that dough you lost on the Hacienda”. VIVA: Do you think FAC251 is the start of a new ‘Mad-chester’ era? HOOKY: Well, I must be mad, so, yeah. VIVA: It has been 20 years since the Hacienda days - how do you think things have changed and how is FAC251 going to be different? HOOKY: That’s an interesting question. I don’t know really! By me being involved for a start....A fresh attitude to music and not money. VIVA: You’re putting quite a few club nights on as well as band nights - which club night are you most excited about? HOOKY: Mine, of course! VIVA: We see you’ve got a few cool unsigned bands on the line up - which unsigned bands are on your radar at the moment? HOOKY: There’s a great one called Mr. Lizard and a singer/songwriter called Ben Marron, who are both very good. Too many to mention really – Manchester’s music scene is growing again and is going from strength to strength. VIVA: What advice would you give to bands trying to make it like you were back in the day? HOOKY: Write great songs! You can’t go wrong then! VIVA: So you joined up with Mani, Rowetta and Howard at the opening night as ‘The Light’ (you guys were amazing, by the way!) Who came up with that idea to all play together and do you think this

could be the start of a regular thing? HOOKY: Me, I’m afraid! As for regular? Humm, I’m doing another one in May on the 18th. VIVA: Tell us a bit about your new project “Freebass” with Mani. I know you’re looking for a lead singer - have you found one yet? HOOKY: Yes. It was tough getting everyone together but hopefully worth it. (we asked Howard Marks this question too and he said: “Well, people keep telling me I’ve been here before but I can’t remember a fucking thing!”) HOOKY: Most memorable moment? My many bollockings off from Tony. VIVA: I read somewhere that when you had the Hacienda you were quoted as saying you were a rubbish business man. We are quite a new business and we’re still learning the ropes. Have you any tips for us from what you’ve learned?! HOOKY: Keep your eye on the till! Never have partners! WHER E’S STRUTTER Viva’s Tom Boone took a trip down to the Night and Day Cafe to meet the Where’s Strutter boys (minus the lead singer who missed his train). After congratulating the band for being Viva’s top unsigned band on the radar, he asks them a few questions so our readers can get to know them a bit better... VIVA: So who are Where’s Strutter? What are you guys all about? WS: We’re about rock ‘n’ roll, and have a real passion for playing live. VIVA: It’s an interesting band name- does it have any meaning or significance? WS: We went to someone’s house party and he had a pet snake called Strutter, well someone let Strutter out of his cage, and the guy whose house it was just kept shouting all night“Where’s Strutter?”. VIVA: What would you rather have, one album that sells millions gets to No.1 and makes you super stars or 5 albums that all make it to the top 20 but you never really make it as massive superstars? WS: 5 albums definitely. You’ll still have your fan base there and you’ll be able to properly show people what you’re all about and continue playing the music you love not what everyone else likes in order to shoot to the top. VIVA: What would be your perfect night out? WS: Sex drugs and rock ‘n’ roll without the missus!! VIVA: Oww you’ll be in trouble now! We say this to every band but I like

this question, describe your sound? WS: It’s heavier than your average indie band, but it’s still too indie for rock and too rock for indie! VIVA: What’s the greatest song you’ve ever written? WS: ‘It’s been a long time coming’. It’s a simple tune and it started from nothing but now it has so much behind it, it’s the tune we finish all our gigs on. VIVA: Where do you see yourselves this time next year? WS: We’ve got a tour coming up and a single release soon so the skys the limit! VIVA: Tell us a bit about getting locked in a room with Pete Docherty? WS: We didn’t really get locked in a room with him, one of our mates is best buddies with Pete so we chilled out one night with him, smoking a few splifs. It was a great experience, he’s a top guy. We’re supporting him on the 5th April at Moho Live. VIVA: Random question but what’s your favourite cheese (just a little survey we are doing)? WS: Cheese-coated salami slices! Feta cheese is disgusting, it’s like someones collected together a load of different sp**k and just made it into a square block. VIVA: Greatest moment of Where’s Strutters life as a band so far? WS: Walking into Academy 2 with the crowd chanting- ‘Where’s Strutter?’.

WE GET ON THE WHEEL After bursting out of the Manchester music scene in 2008, Twisted Wheel have been hard at work touring and promoting their selftitled debut album, whilst still finding time to support Oasis on what looks to be their farewell tour. Now signed up to Noel Gallagher’s label Big Brother, ‘The Wheel’ (as their fans endearingly refer to them) are gearing up to go and do it all again with their imminent second album. ‘The recent demos of new tunes we’ve done are rockier than ever’ we are assured. ‘The music scene at the moment has become a little soft and its attracting a crowd of Chin scratchers who seem more concerned about what the crowd are wearing rather than the music.’ So, no relent seems to be the blueprint from the Oldham lads as they prepare to hit the festival circuit in the summer with Dot To Dot, Osfest, Leeds Live and Haddow Fest already confirmed, as well as an inevitable tour to follow the album. When talking to Twisted Wheel, it is easy to see why they have such a special bond with their loyal fans. They are very much a band of the people, and always true to their roots. From hand picking local bands to support them on their tour dates, to casually discussing their love of Manchego cheese with us, The Wheel have obviously managed to stay grounded despite a whirlwind year. So, what was the most memorable moment? ‘I think walking out on stage at Heaton Park supporting Oasis, there is no substitute for that feeling of playing your songs in front of 70,000 people and getting a fantastic reaction from them.’ I’m sure Wheel be hearing a lot more from these boys in 2010... words: Tom Boone

It’s like Gremlins, I threw water on you last time, and now you’ve multiplied!” announces Paloma Faith after her dramatic entrance onto the Manchester Academy stage with her pair of orange feathers. The girl is right. Last time she set foot in the Manchester music scene she played at a much smaller venue- The Ruby Lounge to a crowd of about 200, back this year and shes sold out Academy 1. The show is huge and oozes effort and spectacular visuals. Costume changes are outrageous and worn in a way that only Miss Faith can, from colourful zebra print and flower patterned dresses to the final encore outfit (wait for it)...an all in one American stars and stripes jumpsuit complimented with a pair of cherries head-piece! But hey we aren’t here to score fashion tips we’re here for the music! All the classics are of course played - ‘Stone Cold Sober’, ‘New York’ and ‘Broken Doll’, an unexpected upbeat cover of the Beatles hit ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’ is a risky endeavour but completely wins the crowd over. But the tune of the night award definitely has to go to Faiths biggest hit to date ‘Upside Down’. ....And we’ve just got to pay tribute to the lucky lad who Faith drags up on stage in the first half to serenade him with ‘Romance Is Dead’. We’re not sure who is, luckier, really the hot guy, or Faith!!

e are sure that it is no surprise to anyone that Glastonbury is at number one in our summer festival run-down. It is a known fact that it’s the mother of all festivals – it’s the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world and a template for all other festivals that are around today. Everyone wants to be one of the lucky people that gets through the ticket system and gets to go. Because it’s very different today from the old days when you would head to Glastonbury and jump the fence! I went in 1998 and, out of a group of 20, myself and three friends were the only ones that had paid to get in! This time the four are leaving behind the city’s baggage and instead filling theirs

with couture gowns and harem pants as they jet to exotic Abu Dhabi. Oh the glitz, the glamour and the exes? That’s right, thousands of miles from home and Carrie just can’t escape city life when she bumps into ex-fiancé Aidan, could this chance meeting have come at the most opportune of moments as married life

takes it toll for Mr. and Mrs. Big. But Carrie’s not the only one feeling the heat, Charlotte struggles with the joy of parenthood and might be about to loose her cool. A rogue prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (Gemma Arterton) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

1980s TV action gets a reboot with this new version of The A-Team, which shifts the Vietnam vet backstory to a group of Iraq War vets who look to clear their name with the U.S. military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed. Liam Neeson heads up the crew as Hannibal, the brains of the operation, with Bradley Cooper as Face, UFC star Quinton “Rampage” Jackson filling in for Mr. T as B.A. Baracus, and District 9’s breakout star, Sharlto Copley, inheriting the unhinged role of “Howling Mad” Murdock. Jessica Biel also co-stars.

The mission: get Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) notorious rocker to L.A’s Greek theatre for one off ten year anniversary gig. 23-year old intern Aaron Greenberg (Jonah Hill) is fresh out of university and may have bitten off more than he can chew. Can he survive 72 hours of sex, drugs and outrageous rockers in London, there’ll be plenty of bad behavior, criminal antics, wild parties, women in absolute abundance and a lot of laughs.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Eclipse - July 9th Since the release of the second edition of the Twilight Saga: New Moon, the world has been eager to sink its teeth into the much-awaited third installment Eclipse. New Moon left us longing for answers, with Edward and Bella reunited, and the

commitment they made to vampire royalty the Volturi looming over them, where will Eclipse take us next. Torn between love and death, and life and friendship Bella’s racked with guilt whichever way she turns. Eclipse captures the love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob we witnessed develop in the

previous two films, and their individual fight to prove their devotion to her.

Yet this is not the only challenge Bella is set to face. Her impending high school graduation, a major milestone for any average teen is the least of her concerns. Still under threat from vengeful vampire Victoria, and the

constant fear the Volturi shall come to fulfill its demands, her struggle to find the right answers is put in jeopardy. We see the return of the Cullen family, the Volturi and a number of new and more dangerous vampires as they all seek their own self-interested objectives.

Platinum Dunes the production company behind the remakes of Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, tackles another classic horror franchise with this redo of the Wes Craven film. Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley) returns in A Nightmare on Elm Street” a contemporary reimagining of the horror classic. A group of suburban teenagers share one common bond: Freddy Krueger, a horribly disfigured killer who hunts them in their dreams, is stalking them all. As long as they stay awake, they can protect one another…but when they sleep, there is no escape.

Set in the infamous city of passion and romance in fair Verona, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) opens the doors to unanswered tales of love and loss when she discovers an old love letter from the 1950s. Her journey begins when she contacts Juliet (Vanessa Redgrave), the intended recipient of the letter. As Juliet seeks out her former flame, Sophie too becomes swept up in the mystery and romance ultimately leading her down an untraveled path and to find her own true love she never knew she was looking for.

Invite the funniest actors in Hollywood to a funeral, and watch the mayhem unfold. Get the right coffin to the right place, pay off the vertically challenged man with the unforgiving photos of the deceased, try to keep your drug induced hallucinating partner in check, keep your guests happy whatever their needs and you’ve got death at a funeral.

CYPRESS HILL- RISE UP

he first Latino multi platinum group are ready to tear down the hip hop scene again with a new portfolio of iconic west coast rap tunes. The span of six years between Till Death Do Us Part and Rise Up marks Cypress Hill’s longest gap between studio albums in their career. Originally scheduled for 2006 - the album which was released on 20th April still never ceases to cover the mishaps of gangster life, with toe tapping beats.

Rise Ups lead single is its incendiary title track, which features Rage Against the Machines’s Tom Morello, who who wrote and co-produced the song is a marked change from their use of conventional hip hop vibes. It Ain’t Nothing is also like a blast from the past as its style manages to cling on to the RNB/hip hop beats of the early noughties.

LITTLE VOLCANOES- SCARS

anchester has produced many great bands over the years. But this chilled-out indie track is the first release from one of Manchester’s most anticipated up and coming bands who have been warming up for six years. Their debut ear popping and insanely cool single could easily be the tool to their major breakthrough.

Mike Edmonds – Bass and Paul O’Neil on the Drums. The band think of themselves as flying the flag for romantic, glam pop-rock in the vein of Morrissey, Suede and The Cure with their wonderfully eccentric guitar pop music. With a list of prestigious venues, press and radio play on the agenda, 2010 could be the year the Little Volcanoes erupt. Let’s pray- minus the ash cloud.

PROFESSOR GREEN- “I NEED YOU TONIGHT”

Brought to you by an eccentric British rapper from East London, Professor Green aka Stephen Paul Manderson’s smash new single introduces an effective twist on an old INXS song with cheeky Eminem style lyrics. The feisty single that makes your feet tap with its sharp beat could actually be better than the original INXS version. The song also features vocals from English singer-songwriter Ed Drewett.

The lyrics are extremely appealing to anyone who has been rejected on the chase for new a love. The song started out its success on Radio 1’s A playlist in March this year- a big deal. Note that his hot comeback single has also had an envious chart performance after entering the Top 40 at number 3. And the Professor is set for even more chart success when his debut album ‘Alive till I’m dead’ gets released later this year.
