HI FROM THE TEAM

Tis the season to be jolly tra la la la la la la.! Hello Manchester, Viva Magazine is back with our 3rd edition and oh what a fab issue this is! Full of exciting features and interviews, we were lucky enough to catch up with the beautiful Pamela Anderson whilst she was in Liverpool rehearsing for the Aladdin Pantomime. We also chatted to Boy George at Venus where he was DJing for the night, as well as interviewing the inspirational Ric O’ Barry, former trainer to Flipper the dolphin on his emotional mission to stop the slaughtering of an estimated 23,000 dolphins every year in Taiji Japan.

As always it’s party crazy here in this buzzing city and we have been invited and partied at the best events; Epernay’s 1st Birthday Bash, the launch of Alex Gerrards 1st fashion line at the Circle Club, Celebrity Grilling the re-match at Restaurant Bar & Grill and The Great Northern Ball at the brand new £12 million venue The Point at Lancashire County Cricket club. We also attended the launches of all launches, the Emporio Armani party, celebrating the opening of their new store at The Avenue! We love Manchester at Christmas time as the city really comes alive with the latenight shopping, Christmas markets, the outside ice rink in Spinningfields and of course all of the Christmas and New Year parties/events. We are also excited for the new year ahead with Media City soon to bring all sorts of great business opportunities and great people to Manchester, the city is fast becoming the new London, and I would say that if you haven’t experienced Manchester you will fall in love with this fast-paced city very quickly! Happy Christmas and New Year, keep a look out for the next issue of Viva that will be available February 1st!

Big love a v Team Vi

PS: Dear Father Christmas, please could the Viva team have three of the new Bentley Continental Cars? Come-on we’ve been really good this year!

VIVA i n t h e p i p e l i n e A FEW THINGS worth shouting about over the coming

MONTHS

The Radar American teen heart throbs back on our screens

Lets face it, we’re not overthrown by gorgeous kind hearted, funny men, who want to shower us with their wealth and love, so its nice to escape into a world where they do exist (Zac Effron-Charlie St Cloud, Chace Crawford, Penn Bagley, Ed Westwick-Gossip Girl, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder-Vampire Diaries).

Manchester Representatives

So two of the biggest shows on TV are back and we’ve got Manchester in both. Tina O’Brian’s impressing the nation on Strictly Come dancing, and Marlon McKenzie did us proud on X factor proving to the rest of the country why Manchester has both beauty and talent.

Younger interest in politics

Adam Rickett has been in Birmingham at the Conservative conference party, where he has been campaigning to get young interest back into politics-an extremely important and I predict effective gesture- as it is the younger generation who will shape the future of our country.

Panto On Strike

P

addy McGuiness and Jonathan Wilkes have teamed up to create an adults only pantomime which they promise contains the “worlds most offensive song” and even songs written by Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow! Featuring their celebrity A-list friends, it is set to be the show to attend this winter, with Gary and Robbie set to make an appearance on the opening night. “It’s going to be one of those shows where we could have a different celebrity turning up every night. They could even turn up on stage, you never know,” claims Johnny. The story is centred around the two stars (playing themselves) on a mission to save pantomimes, as a host of traditional pantomime characters have gone on strike following the princess being captured by Evil King Foo (played by former Corrie star Brian Capron). The show will run from the 12th of November til the 27th of November at the Manchester Opera House and tickets are ranged between £22.25 £32.25 each. ■

D

ecember sees the launch of Browns Restaurant and Bar in Manchester, it will be situated on York Street taking over the Athenaeum bar. Brown’s restaurants have always focused on delivering classic food in a stylish establishment, and after nearly 40 years it certainly seems like a recipe for success. It’s going to be the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine after work or to celebrate a special occasion. Viva are looking forward to sampling the delights of the menu. For more details visit the website: www.browns-restaurants.co.uk >>

Spinningfields

his Christmas is set to be a busy one for Spinningfields in Manchester with the launch of The Avenue, a one-stop shop for all things designer, as well as some high end restaurants and bars. Nicky Clarke, Armani, D&G and Gucci are just a few of the names set to have stores here, and the newly refurbished Debenhams and House of Fraser (which will be celebrating its 175th birthday) will also have a home in Spinningfields. After you have shopped ‘till you drop, you can then head over to the Spinningfields Ice Rink for a relaxing skate. After the success of the last two years, Spinningfields is back, and it’s set to be just as popular as ever. ■

War veteran’s charity

I love that a former newspaper employee and war veteran from Middleton left £350,000 to charity including Manchester’s The Christie-what a better way to leave the world than to make another’s life happier.

B

A list or Z list

E

Cheating footballers

So unfortunately in reality good looking successful men is as much as we’re going to get. Abbey, Coleen and Victoria are learning this, the hard way-does wealth and looks mean giving up on love and respect from our men?

Unfair arrest

Surely someone sticking a camera up a lady’s skirt is considered assault, so why is it that Russell Brand was the one to get into trouble for sticking up for his fiancé-surely we should commend him for protecting his loved one.

Just Silly

A Disney Muslim employee recently accused the company of religious discrimination after they refused to let her wear a Hijab to work. Disney has very strict rules regarding costume (I speak from experience) which she would have been made well aware of from the start, so if she didn’t like it, she should have gone elsewhere.

New driving test rules

New drivers will be expected to follow a new route independently for 10 minutes without direction to see if their ready to go unsupervised. Driving tests are such a nerve racking experience anyway, and I think this is just adding unnecessary pressure. This issues radar was brought to you by Elicia Davies (Miss Manchester)

I Love the Christmas Markets Our city is chasing the bright lights of London – and catching up fast! Our country’s capital may be the home of all things bigger and better, but when it comes to Christmas shopping, Manchester is quickly stealing its crown. All year round, the city centre of Manchester boasts a wide range of shops, from independent designers to popular high street favourites, but when the winter months kick in and the festive season draws close, Manchester’s shopping scene suddenly pulls out all the stops.

VIVA F E A T U R E

EMMA CAMpBELL REPORTS

A

for bringing in a little bit of unique style to your shopping. For the prettiest of sights, visit the Manchester Christmas markets in the evening and enjoy drinking, shopping and socialising under the rainbow of twinkling Christmas lights.

s November approaches, the city fills with wooden chalets huddled together to bring Manchester shoppers the delights of the famous Christmas Markets. Every year, the huts instil a really strong sense of seasonal spirit in locals and tourists alike, combining gluvine, frankfurter and wooden craft stalls to create an intimate, predominantly Germanic-inspired shopping experience.

Manchester is without a doubt one of Britain’s most cosmopolitan cities, and anyone who has visited the Trafford Centre, shopper’s paradise of the North, will agree it is the ultimate in retail therapy.

The Christmas Markets first arrived in Manchester in 2000, and every year has seen little added extras that make the markets even more special. Christmas 2008 brought the city to life with an enormous Christmas Pyramid and nativity play, providing the ultimate festive setting. Spreading over five locations across the city centre (Albert Square being the main one, with smaller sites setting up along Brazenose Street, St Anne’s Square, Exchange Street and New Cathedral Street), it’s a merry little haunt where shoppers can go to seek out the most unique of gifts. Amongst the wooden chalets lie independent stalls selling handmade jewellery, fragrant candles and natural well-being products. Wooden gifts are engraved, and winter scarfs are hand-knitted for a personal touch to your Christmas present list.

As Christmas time draws nearer, Manchester’s Trafford Centre glitters with festive delights and turns into a beautiful winter wonderland. Shoppers can enjoy thousands of cascading lights and giant decorated trees, surrounded by all the brand names you can think of. It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping for your ‘hard-to-buy-for’ Dad or your ‘I-have-it-all’ best friend, at the Trafford Centre there’s everything you could possibly think of under one big designer roof. Leading department stores Selfridges and John Lewis wow the crowds every year with breath-taking window displays that set the seasonal scene. The grandest of grottos position themselves across the two floors, with Santa and his reindeer creating a brilliant attraction to adults and children alike. Traditional Christmas photos can be taken around the festive themed grottos, putting everyone in the mood and creating an exciting atmosphere.

It’s not just the gift stalls that give the markets the magical merry touch - it’s the many continental food and beverage pop-up bars which transform this shopper’s paradise into an entertainment empire. Mulled wine of every flavour is served in steaming hot mugs in cosy bar settings, where shoppers can rest their feet and tuck into the variety of Europeanstyle foods and sizzling bratwurst sausages. And if a heavier night is on the cards, the beer tents are the perfect place to head to for some serious Hoegarden supping!

The Trafford Centre also launches into real winter mode by transforming its Barton Square into a super 240 square metre eco-ice rink. This striking rink allows families to take a break from trawling the stores to glide on the ice, regardless of the weather. Shoppers can indulge in skating lessons and take advantage of skate hire (included in the ticket price) for a fun filled day out.

So if you want to add a little quirkiness and individuality to your Christmas shopping this year, then these continental markets are the first place you need to visit. Here you will find an abundance of designer and eccentric crafts and gifts, ideal

If slipping and sliding around isn’t your thing, then you can take advantage of the festive music which features around the shopping centre throughout the Christmas period. Talented musicians and >

VIVA F E A T U R E choirs gather together outside the big-name stores and herald the Christmas season with cheerful performances. Christmas shopping can be a hungry chore, but the Trafford Centre has every type of cuisine covered. From Thai to Tandoori, Tapas to Take-out, the shopping centre plays host to every type of food you could dream of. Shopping times are extended, so there’s no rush to get home, and with loads of free parking spaces it’s the ideal place to spend an afternoon stocking up for all your Christmas needs. For a more entertaining night at the Trafford Centre this Christmas to jazz up your shopping session, the Christmas light ‘switch on’ is hosted by a celebrity figure every year, with JLS previously taking to centre stage. The light display is fantastic, giving a celebratory luminosity to the building and setting a festive glow around the 230 stores it is home to. And 2010 has launched a few special treats to keep everyone entertained at this shopper’s utopia this December, with the opening of the Legoland Discovery Centre (perfect for distracting restless children!), Lipsy’s new standalone store selling all this season’s hottest party dresses, and a new Radley store so you can stock up on designer bags for all those fashionable people you have to please this year. The Christmas spirit spreads to Manchester at the end of October, when Santa Claus comes to town in the shopping malls and the shop-front baubles have been hung. So this year, make sure you take full advantage of what Manchester has to offer – embrace the open-air markets, indulge in a spot of ice skating and walk around with your mulled wine mug like it’s something you could get used to. It’s a shopping wonderland, so pull on your mittens and step into a charming Mancunian Christmas! ■

PAMELA ANDERSON:

From Baywatch to Barb Wire, celebrity sex tapes to celebrity comedy roasting, Pammy has never been one to shun the limelight. Viva gets up close and personal with the girl on the loose....

Well, I love the story of Aladdin and the TV show ‘I dream of Genie’ - so I thought, how much better can it get than that. I just combine both - it’s a fantasy. If you got given 3 wishes what would they be? Everyone asks me this question. I’d have to say at this moment: 1. That my children have a wonderful, safe, productive and meaningful lives. 2. More respect for the life around us, more compassion for our planet 3. No wars and one world government. If there was a Baywatch pantomime who would you want to play CJ? I’ve already done that - the TV series was already camp. We’ve already made fun of this one. You’ve been a movie star, a popular TV character, a model, a novelist, in pantomime, a charity worker, in fact your one of the biggest superstars of our time. What has been the greatest moment in your career so far?

I

f you haven’t already heard the exciting news, Miss Pamela Anderson is going to be staying up North (Liverpool) over December 2010 to appear as the genie in the pantomime Aladdin. Viva, being massive fans of the superstar, just couldn’t miss out on this opportunity to interview one of our hero’s. After 4 weeks of doing everything we could to speak to ‘the girl on the loose’ we finally organised a chat. Pamela Anderson is the most recognisable icon of this millennium and is known notoriously for her big boobs and bleached blond hair, but we find out that Pammy also has a big heart of gold....

Ow that’s a hard one, I can’t say I’ve been a novelist though! - my “ghost writer” wrote the 2 novels “Star” and “Star Struck”. My personal style is very different. I enjoy writing and hope to do more in the future. Being Pamela Anderson you’ve obviously met a lot of inspiring and talented people, who’s been the most amazing person you have ever met and why? I meet inspiring people all the time. Always people that help E-world - people that care inspire me the most. Use your vehicle for whatever that may be to share information. I would say My friend Vivienne Westwood is on the top of my list. But I have so many eccentric friends / artists in my life. I am not going through one day in my life without being connected to someone I admire.

“ I am dedicating my life to supporting

How are you going to enjoy your stay in the North of England?

the people I admire, 2011 is my year of saying YES!

I am just playing it by ear and really look forward to being there. I hope that a lot of people will come and enjoy the show. The Empire is a gorgeous theatre. So you are up here starring in Aladdin as the genie, you must be the most beautiful genie that there has ever been. What made you want to be in the Aladdin pantomime and was it your choice to be the genie or would you have preferred to play another character?

You’re a passionate representative for PETA, Viva magazine is also a big supporter, what has been your biggest break-through achievement since you’ve been involved with the charity? We’ve helped change animal welfare laws all over the world - so many issues we’ve been able to draw attention to. I am speaking at Oxford university this week. Young people just absorb all the info, it’s kind of a revolutionary process, people want to change things to the better.

Have you watched The Cove about the 1000’s of dolphins getting slaughtered in Japan each year, it’s so sad? We interviewed Ric O’ Barry a couple of weeks ago, actually on the day the slaughtering started this year, it was a very intense interview! We need to make more people aware of it? Of course I’ve seen ‘The Cove’. The director is a friend of mine from the ocean preservation society. There is so much to do - watch The Cove, Earthlings - Education is key. It shocks me how heartless some people are. Ok on a lighter note you were involved in comedy roasting David Hasselhoff and have also been comedy roasted yourself. Who would you like to personally comedy roast and what would be your first liner to them? I love the glamorous roasts of the 60’s. You have to laugh at yourself and that may be part of my job, guess we just ran out of good jokes. I really do not like abusive, smacking humour, it’s just not me. Hugh Hefner is a big fan of yours, you have been in Playboy many times and he’s even said you are the Marilyn Monroe of our era. What is it like being at the Playboy mansion and is the grotto as amazing as the rumours suggest? Well, I just shot another cover on Hef’s request in the playboy mansion grotto in the pool. It’s my 14th American cover now - hard to believe. Lastly what has Pamela Anderson got lined up for 2011? I am dedicating my life to supporting the people I admire, the causes anywhere I can help. If I can help, I will do it. I also have my beauty products that all make contributions to causes I choose. I am also working with waves4water - helping to supply clean water filters wherever needed - especially in crisis areas. These guys are ‘the real deal’. They go where it happens, the poorest, most violent places. I have so much respect for them! This is my year of saying YES! Thank you Pamela Anderson Pamela Anderson will be starring in the pantomime ‘Aladdin’ over December. The production dates are 10th December 2010 to 2nd January 2011 at the Liverpool Empire. For tickets and more information please contact the Liverpool Empire ticket line on: 0844 847 2525, www.liverpoolempire.org.uk. ■

2010 Here at Viva, we know talent. We know what works and what doesn’t. We pride ourselves on knowing who’s who in this great city and which members of the social, cultural and business elite are in need of some recognition from time to time. We like to keep their egos flawlessly groomed. Written to coincide with the official ‘Best of Manchester Awards’ 2010 held last week November 15 at St. Ann’s Church in the city centre, Viva has decided to pay their own respects to the men and women, the movers and shakers, deserving of a mention. But first a little background; The annual ‘Best of Manchester Awards’ are held to celebrate innovation in art, music and fashion. The awards draw a spotlight on those breaking the moulds, weaving the fabrics and setting the trends. The aim is to encourage and reward entrepreneurship and creativity ensuring that Manchester’s reputation as a national leader in the creative industries is sustained. This years most prestigious, ‘lifetime achievement in fashion award’ was deservingly handed to Gerardine Hemingway of the global fashion brand Red or Dead. Soon after conception the brand found itself onto stalls in Camden Market, London and later established the Red or Dead line in Afflecks Palace in the Northern Quarter, Manchester. Gerardine, who attended the event with husband and Red or Dead business partner Wayne, was presented the distinguished award by Peter Saville, Manchester Creative Director and co-founder of Factory Records. >

the V iva A wards 2010 Congratulations to all the winners! Now here are a couple of additions to the Viva magazine unofficial Best of Manchester Awards 2010:

W

e couldn’t salute Manchester’s most praise-worthy sons and daughters without mentioning Twisted Wheel, and no, before you ask, it’s not a recession proof scrap metal company. Twisted Wheel is in fact a three-piece punk band from the east end of Manchester. The band was formed in Oldham back in February 2007 and consists of guitarist and singer Jonny Brown, bassist Stephen Evans and drummer Eoghan Clifford. The trio have been described as the saviours of the British punk movement and are widely believed to be one of the most exciting young British guitar bands to emerge in recent years. With a fan club including Noel & Liam Gallagher, Paul Weller, Shaun Ryder, Ian Brown and Kasabian, they’ve been attracting the attention of the great and the good from their earliest incarnation.

The saviours of British punk: Twisted Wheel

which has been built on music, is a real honour. We’re proud to come from Manchester and very grateful for all the support we’ve had since day one.” Now, from rockstars to hairstylists, the final addition to Viva’s own Best of Manchester awards is a coiffeuse with magical capabilities. Voted North West hairdresser of the year for 2008 and 2009 by the British Hairdressing Council, Sharon Peake is clearly a stylist with something special. With salons in the fashionable Northern Quarter and elsewhere, across town, in the Bohemian suburb of Chorlton, Ethos Hairdressing has become renowned in the UK for their creative styling and colour work since opening their doors six years ago. As well as working in both salons, Sharon also runs the Ethos Academy providing courses

designed to offer a wide variety of skills and techniques to bring out the best in up and coming stylists. Working alongside international session stylist Adam Bryant the duo have turned hairdressing into a science, with each ‘do’ styled with individual flair. Adam was the former International Show Director for Toni & Guy and during his early career has been based in London and New York, working with designers including Balenciaga, Issey Miyake, and Donna Karen. Adam has also worked with big names such as Paris Hilton, Venus Williams, Carla Bruni and Kylie Minogue. With a wealth of knowledge and skills between them, Ethos has become a boutique of excellence and with Sharon a nominee for this years North West hairdresser of the year awards (third time in a row) she could soon be entered into the hairdressing hall of fame. >

Laura Rodwell from The Music Magazine said of their latest album: “For all the modern Monkeyness of the lyrics, however, musically Twisted Wheel is pure vintage. From the lo-fi production to the frantic guitars and savage vocals, everything about this album screams punk”. “What is so great about this album is that it marries two completely different eras of music brilliantly- modern Northern indie and punk – and because of this sounds like a breath of fresh air”. On hearing they’d made it onto Viva’s own best of Manchester awards, the band said: “There are so many inspiring bands coming out of Manchester so accepting this award means a lot to us. To be voted the best band, in a city

VIVA f e a t u r e Next up is an exciting venue in the Northern Quarter that successfully marries a bar atmosphere, restaurant and pool hall- all in one cosy ballroom! Blackdog Ballroom has become the place to be and a place to be seen on the Manchester circuit with gourmet food, draught beers and a 4am closing time. If you’re lucky/observant enough you could even do some celebrity spotting but ideally before you discover the extensive cocktail selection. The venue boasts a secret room, that is so secret it has yet to be discovered and the revered Anthony Fielden of The Northern Quarter restaurant serving up gastronomic delights until 1am. Free wifi, dramatic interiors and draught beers, what more do you need? Oh and did we mention that Blackdog Ballroom has just been nominated in the Best Bar Category in the Machester Food and Drink Festival 2010? Enough said.. You can unwittingly stumble across Blackdog at the space underneath the iconic Afflecks Palace, previously inhabited by Isobar and Club North. Finally, a restaurant that provides a unique dining experience difficult to find anywhere outside of South America. Tropiero, located appropriately on Brazil Street in Manchester, serves up the finest in Brazilian cuisine and culture by continuing the Churrasco tradition. Churrasco is the Brazilian equivalent of barbequing which began in the 17th century in the South of Brazil. The region was renowned for producing some of the best meats in the world and it was owner Zilda Borgert’s dream to bring these flavours to the palettes of Manchester. Expertly prepared pork, beef, lamb and chicken dishes can be found on the menu with a drinks selection to complement the traditional Brazilian ingredients. The Tropiero team

Truly a must try for meat lovers and gastro-venturers alike. To the best of Manchester 2010, Viva salutes you! ■ Words by: Martin Baxter

VIVA F A S H I O N Congratulations

now for about five years, but only got into blogging in the last 12 months. I started blogging for a start-up fashion brand before realising I was passionate enough about it to set up my own blog. My blog, ‘What Emma Did’, has only been running since January and has taken off really well. “This year Cosmopolitan magazine were running a competition to search for the best bloggers for various categories such as Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle. Since my blog had only been running for seven months at the time, I looked at the category ‘Best New Fashion Blogger’ (in association with Catwalkqueen website) which was looking for the best of the newest blogs. I felt that my blog fitted into this category much more easily, but didn’t think any more of it. It was only when Matalan found my website and

to our Viva

fashion writer Emma

Campbell

for winning ‘The Cosmopolitan

Blog Awards’. Emma tells us her winning story:

“I have always loved writing. I have been writing short stories just for my own pleasure since I was really young. I studied English at A Level, where I did work experience at local newspapers and PR companies before going on to study Fashion and Journalism at university. I have always had a passion for fashion, it was the one topic that I felt I knew everything about! So I started freelance fashion writing alongside my degree and have carried on doing it since graduating. It can be hard juggling my day job (fashion marketing) with my freelance work, but it’s what I love doing so its never too big a chore! I have been involved in fashion journalism

entered it into that category themselves (as they loved the blog!) that I really started to think that it might actually get some votes! Winning the competition meant blogging live from London Fashion Week and having my blog plugged by Cosmopolitan online. Nothing can beat blogging live from the catwalks at this year’s London Fashion Week. I blogged about next year’s trends literally five minutes after they appeared on the catwalks, and in my experience that was the most exciting news I’ve ever blogged about. There was even a silly moment when Kerry Katona strangely turned up at the Giles show and was interviewed afterwards saying she liked how he “put blouses with skirts and used spots”, which was pretty funny. The beauty of blogging meant that I could post about it straight away on ‘What Emma Did’, whereas the media company I was working with didn’t even know about it until the next day - so I guess I kind of broke the news!” Check out Emma’s blog at: www.whatemmadid.com and follow her on twitter: Twitter.com/What_Emma_Did ■

H a rv e y N i c h o l s AUTUMN / WINTER 2010 Fashion show On the 22nd of September, Manchester’s beautiful cathedral played host to Harvey Nichols’ Autumn/Winter 2010 Catwalk Show. The city’s press, shoppers and fashion insiders took their seats in the pews to watch a show of glamour and glitz.

A

s expected with Manchester’s most prestigious store, guests were welcomed with a first-class reception of sparkling champagne and a celebrity crowd. The cathedral was the perfect home for the show, with its timeless and classic architecture providing an effortless setting to showcase the winter fashions. Founder and director Susan Caplan of Susan Caplan Vintage Jewellery Collection opened the show, as the girls from Coronation Street and Hollyoaks watched from the front row. Harvey Nichols supplied goody bags on each chair so the fashionable crowd could admire the selection of beauty products as they prepared to see the different trends being sent down the catwalk to help plan our autumn/winter wardrobes. There wasn’t a definitive ‘theme’ throughout the show of a certain ‘trend’ to wear this winter, instead the eleven collections gave us an eyeful of fantastic clothing worn in very different ways. The first look to kick off the show was New Simplicity, a trend which combines simple pieces with smart tailoring for an elegant yet casual look. The colour palette included black, greys and whites, with the key element being staple pieces that will last a lifetime in your wardrobe. This collection focused on Calvin Klein smart gowns, grey panel dresses and wool capes for winter warmth. The men’s collection ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ followed and gave a real feel for the cold mornings that are fast approaching. This look displayed fur-lined gilets, McQueen sweaters and Paul Smith Parka’s, all put together for the ultimate in layering. Metallic shades were mixed with earthy tones for a slightly experimental feel. However, the silhouette was the most prominent feature for this look - the chunkier the outline, the better! Other fabulous female collections included ‘English Heritage’, an outdoors fashion theme playing with plaid, tweed and fleece, and ‘Digital Love’, a stunning mix of digital prints and pixilated sequin dresses, where the length is super short and the theme is attention-grabbing. This

look brought a display of loud, bright colours clashed with prints onto the catwalk - a look definitely not recommended for the more ‘reserved’ dresser! The crowd were then treated to ‘All Hail Cavalli’. Last season saw a trend dedicated to McQueen, and this time it’s all about Cavalli. This collection proved that rock and roll glamour is very hot right now, with silky fabrics mixing with animal prints and big heels. Fashionable men’s trends included ‘Equestrian Pedestrian’, a fashion all about the countryside coming to town. Surprisingly, the male models didn’t look too bad strutting down the runway in Gucci jodhpurs and D&G flat cap’s. This assortment was a brilliant lead into the ‘Camp Rock’ style, which mainly featured a blend of Bon Jovi and Aerosmith - add a dusting of double denim and you’ve got your ‘pretty rock’ look! For all those who said double denim would never make it, time to eat your words. This look sees denim waistcoats worn with jeans, wrapped with pashmina scarves, with fitted tee’s thrown in for a ‘pretty-boy-gonegrunge’ look. A bit of a twist came next with the ‘Interview with a Vampire’ theme, showing that the Twilight Saga has finally rubbed off on the fashion world. The vampire themed collection saw rich velvets and luxurious tailoring resulting in stunning gothic and Victorian styles. The models dressed up in the most luxurious of dinner suits, bow ties and Nicole Farhi brooches. Smart, elegant yet edgy. It may sound unusual but this look is highly effective. The show came to a finale with the ultimate theme ‘Glamour’, where guests took in the selection of breathtaking dresses. A Metallic Lanvin dress was followed down the catwalk by outfits such as a delicate Versace lace dress, Balmain leather leggings and an electric blue halter dress. All in all, an ultra-fashionable night that took us into the winter months in sophisticated style. ■ Words: Emma Campbell

Changing accents rather than your entire outfit will not only help your bank balance, but will also mean you get the most out of your investment pieces without the fear of being seen in them before. It’s also ideal for those after work drinks when a wardrobe change is just not an option. An excuse to buy a new pair of shoes? We knew you’d appreciate it! To night

Cape - This season no winter wardrobe shall be complete without a cape, from the high street to haute couture everyone has their own take, and so we are well and truly spoilt for choice; tartan, tweed, wool, casual, party the list goes on… However in this season of festivities we could not resist this block colour cape in the colour of the season. Antipodium @ Harvey Nicholls £350

Bracelet - Take a cue from Alexander McQueen’s fabulously embellished and completely dripping in gold autumn/winter collection with your accessories. There isn’t much that really needs to be said about the YSL arty too cuff, it’s a stand-alone piece that can transform any outfit. The small hints of rich colours will really set off the whole ensemble. YSL @ Selfridges “arty too” £435

>>

Watch - The most manly of >> accessories, the watch, there is only one of two ways we can go with this outfit the alpha male of time-keepers or dainty and elegant for our delicate wrists. We like the Omega Speedmaster, definitely an alpha-male with its chunky leather strap and globular face, no other accessory needed. Omega Speedmaster 38mm £6030

Trousers - These trousers are right for so many reasons, firstly camel is undeniably THE colour this winter regardless of the look you may be working. Secondly the cut and style of these trousers are a definite one size fits all, from big bottoms to those of us that don’t posses model length legs. The high waist and straight cut lengthens the leg, whilst drawing you in at the waist to accentuate your figure, you simply can’t go wrong. Whistles “Patsy” £95

>>

Blouse - The key to such a masculine look is to incorporate small elements of femininity, opt for a more delicate print and fabric as it helps to soften the overall outfit. This blouse by Vanessa Bruno is defined by it’s Victoriana influenced sleeves and trimmed collar, an entirely more feminine approach to the shirt. Vanessa Bruno @ Urban Outfitters boutique £162

Shoes - When making animal print a staple piece in your outfit it’s important not to go overboard when it comes to accessories. These peep-toe shoes from Reiss are the perfect shade of red to bring out the vibrancy of the blouse, and the added gold details make these heels far too precious for walking around the office, strictly dance floors ladies. Reiss ‘Dandy” £149

>>

Brogues - masculine shoes marched their way up and down the catwalks from New York to Paris, and following in the footsteps of this outfit Paul Smith’s Burton brogues tick all the boxes; wonderful block colour, masculine to the sole and a hot trend this winter. >> Paul Smith “Burton” @ Poshu £340

Top - Animal print was a big hit on the catwalks, but before you start picturing Cruella Devil, head to toe monochrome spots is not what we’re channelling. This drape blouse will prove to be a staple piece this upcoming party season. Matthew Williamson “Devoure’ £595

Look East Despite the revival of our British fashion heritage on the catwalks last February, designers have been looking beyond their own cultures and taking inspiration from nations far and wide. A distinct bohemian influence ran through many collections displaying a vibrant show of rich colour palettes, a juxtaposition of fabrics and textures combined with prints large and small, a far cry from the tweeds and traditionally British winter tones.

Isharya, Moon Bali earrings, £245

Acne, cropped jacket, £1,558

However, where in the past the bohemian vogue has been rehashed, reproduced and basically flooded the high street, February’s fashion weeks presented the cutting edge in Boho chic in the west. Designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Anna Sui and Kenzo selected the very best of eastern colour and pattern, bohemian flare and transported it to the wardrobes of New York businesswomen. Jean Paul Gaultier’s colour scheme was undeniably eastern yet his tailoring one hundred percent from the occident, taking the traditional blazer and teaming it with silk dresses printed with large lotus blooms.

Hermes, Torana enamel bracelet, £465

Fur was featured heavily across many collections; however if you prefer not to cause a stir designers are creating increasingly authentic looking faux fur garments. Still not convinced, then opt for a more sparing coverage; fur trims on jackets and capes add instant bohemian glamour yet needn’t be reserved for evening wear only. Paisley and floral print are synonymous with bohemian fashions, blouses from One Vintage combine traditionally bohemian silhouettes, rich jewel shades and embellishments. Yet for those that tend to shy away from the bold patterns and colour palettes there are many means of incorporating print into your wardrobe. If uncertain of this look we recommend Zara’s extensive range of patterned shirts and blouses. Offering a range of shades and designs they allow you the freedom to experiment with the look without investing in expensive key pieces. And finally it is well known that accessories are the simplest way of updating your wardrobe and trying new trends, and this is a look that allows for embellishments aplenty. Layer charm necklaces and colourful beads over a flowing blouse, Isharya has an incredible selection of elaborate earrings that need no other accompaniment. Suede tends to be the fabric of choice for bohemian accessories, tassels, studs and sequined embroidery adorn handbags and shoes whether subtle or ostentatious work to make an outfit stand out.

WINTER WARMERS Lavenham brown multi tweed westley hunting gilet, £159

Lavenham plum classic quilted jacket, £115

Lyle & Scott mid grey cable knit beanie, £35

As the nights start to draw in, the air fills with a chill, the transportation infrastructure of the entire North West freezes to a halt, and we begin to understand that winter is indeed upon us. With this current season comes the necessity to wrap up warm against the frost and if a gentleman prepares well in advance he will achieve the goal of wrapping up warm in style. This autumn/winter season has brought about much choice within the menswear arena, and all are suited excellently to the devastatingly cold temperature of Manchester at this time of year. The first option to present is one many will be familiar with as the look probably sported by your father and your grandfather for years. The English countryside has infiltrated the city, and so the urban gent may hibernate for the winter underneath a waxed jacket and keep his feet warm in thick socks and hiking boots. Many will have already seen flat tweed caps and waxed gilets strutting up Deansgate - proof that fashion has taken a break in the Peak District. To help achieve this look, Selfridges have stocked their menswear department in Exchange Square with every kind of quilted jacket, in appropriate hues of green and black. The quintessentially English original is clearly the Barbour but other labels, for example Lavenham, have taken the classic and interpreted with tighter fits and stylish additions which may suit your personal style more closely. Team your jacket with a checked shirt, like this Marc Jacobs, and classic blue straight cut jeans. Boots are also a necessity; Ugg of Australia’s latest line for men offers suitable options which all include their signature fur lining, ideal against the cold. When in work, the jacket - whether quilted or waxed - will work well with a grey suit and tan Mulberry Brynmore satchel. Deer stalker hats may be utilised by the braver man looking to capitalise on the gimmick but this Lyle & Scott matching set would also suit.

APC chocolate soft leather aviator jacket, £660

Next, if you’re the kind of gent who likes to look on trend but still blend with the rest of the crowd on the MetroLink then military trends can work for you. Likewise, if you’re more akin to being the centre of attention because of your clothing you can use the military theme to nurse your ego. This trend is one that will be present season after season, thus making the right purchase an investment. Team your work suit with a military themed overcoat like this Vivienne Westwood Admiral Jacket or, if you’re that bit bolder, bring your old over-coat up to date with a few customisations like those Dries van Noten badges introduced to you in Viva’s last issue. Gloves must be leather - and it is best to get a size slightly too small so as to let them warp to your hand shape - and this red Vivienne Westwood scarf will complete the look.

Lyle & Scott mid grey cable knit scarf, £50

The last option to highlight needs no introduction as it has taken our female counterparts by storm. With the Aviator the main objective the wearer must bear in mind is that it is important to ensure that you do not succumb to the costume package, namely: the white scarf, fur lined helmet, goggles and pantaloons. Simply incorporate the jacket into your own winter wardrobe - taking care not to look like one of The Wright brothers - and the rest will come naturally. Moustache optional.

GUILTY PLEASURES Around Christmas we are all guilty of being over indulgent in all aspects of food and drink, and as we all nurse hangovers on 1st January many people make the eternal resolution to let this year be the year they finally lose weight. Well, Weight Watchers is here to help with a whole new plan- its most liveable yet. Weight Watchers has taken all the best nutritional science from around the world and distilled it down into one simple, easy to follow plan for healthy, sustainable weight loss for life. The new ProPoints plan, available in meetings and online from November 7th, is set to be one of the most efficient ways of losing and controlling weight, without letting it control your life. >

VIVA H e a l T H

Introducing the Weight Watchers® ProPoints® plan

S

So what is the science behind this new plan? To start with, we need to know a bit about the basic history of the calorie. In the late 1800s experiments were conducted that involved burning small samples of food in controlled conditions and measuring the amount of energy released in the form of heat, thereby estimating what energy is available to the body.

ince being founded in 1963, Weight Watchers has become the world’s leading provider of weight management services and over the past 8 years the company has helped the UK lose over 8 million stone. It has always used credible and evidence based science to ensure its members are losing weight in a healthy and effective manner, and its newest offering is no exception. The ProPoints plan is the biggest innovation from Weight Watchers in the last 15 years and uses the latest nutritional science which reflects how our bodies process different types of food. The plan helps people discover foods that will keep them satisfied and healthy, and which will make life even more enjoyable as they lose weight. Weight Watchers has given all food and drink a ProPoints value, which takes into account the protein, carbohydrate, fat and fibre in any given portion. This is to give an accurate reflection of the value of food and its impact on weight loss. When you begin the plan, you are given a personal daily ProPoints budget which takes into account gender, age, weight and height. A great aspect of the plan is that all fruits and most vegetables have a zero ProPoints value. Zoe Hellman, Weight Watchers Company Dietitian says: “We want to help people make healthier choices, and we know it’s easier to snack on fruit when you are on the go in a busy day. Most vegetables also have a ProPoints value of zero so we’ve made it easier than ever before to take in your five a day.” In addition to your personal daily allowance, everyone is given an additional 49 ProPoints values as a weekly allowance to be used however they choose. Zoe Hellman says: “The 49 ProPoints weekly allowance essentially gives you a ‘day off your diet’. Either divide them up across your week or, save them up for your Friday night curry, or night out with the girls (a typical curry, rice and Naan will set you back 45 ProPoints and a bottle of wine, 20 ProPoints).Put simply, it means that real life doesn’t have to sabotage your weight loss efforts.”

Karen Miller-Kovach, Chief Scientific Officer for Weight Watchers International says, “Our bodies aren’t simple burners that use up all components of food in the same way.” Different nutrients use different amounts of energy to process, in other words, if an item of food needs a lot of energy to process it, the energy value left for our body to use or store depletes. ProPoints values work by using this simple formula.

Zoe Hellman

Some people have already been lucky enough to try out the programme. Amanda-Jane Foster, 25 says “Along with a desire to fit back into my size 10 jeans, attending regular meetings to share and listen to the experiences of others has been key to my success. The flexible real-life approach of the ProPoints plan means I can stay on track but still enjoy dinner (with dessert!) on a night out with friends – and the weekly allowance means I never worry about weight loss at weekends.” So the new programme is already proving a huge success. So start the new year how you mean to go on and lose weight whilst still enjoying the festivities! Weight Watchers is a tried and tested method of losing weight healthily and has a fantastic track record, and the new ProPoints plan is sure to be another success story. Words by: Kate Miller

What happens if I have a bad day?

You can’t always plan for life. That’s why on the ProPoints plan you have a weekly allow-ance. Members who have tried the ProPoints plan describe it as a ‘safety net’. If things don’t go to plan with your eating, the weekly allowance is there to help you get back on track.

If I use the weekly allowance, will I still lose weight?

VIVA g a d g e t s GADGET CHRISTMAS WISH LIST.... Nintendo 3DS

T

he Nintendo DS has no doubt revolutionised the gaming industry since its release in 2004 and they are set to do it once again with their new console – the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo have created a hand held 3D console that works without the need to wear glasses to optimize game play and bring it to the next level. The console includes a analogue controller so players are able to control the depth of 3D, as well as motion sensing accelerometer integrated. While you may be able to have a much crisper 3D image using the PS3 the DS capitalizes on its main selling point – portability. Although an overall beefier feel than the previous consoles, the 3DS is still perfect for those boring train journeys to work. It is a great present for young and old and will surely be a huge seller this Christmas with its expected release date on November 20th 2010.

odern day life consists of everything being portable so we can use it when we want it and where. But there is one problem with this – battery life. This is where the pebble steps in. It is a small lightweight gadget that has four different connections so you can charge up any item you need. It plugs into the USB on your computer and charges itself, and then it has the power to completely recharge an iPhone four times. Great for travelling or festivals or just to have in case of emergencies.

he Polaroid is making a comeback and its been given a very modern twist. The new instant printer allows you to send your photos via USB or Bluetooth to be printed out where ever you are! And no need to have to keep restocking on ink this nifty little gadget uses technology called ZINK (Zero Ink) and prints photos using heat instead meaning they are also dry as soon as they have printed. Also they have combined an Android app into the gizmo which will allow users to add borders, text, images and customize their photo in any way they want before they print. It is no bigger than a mobile phone and weighs just 8 ounces so it can just be slipped into your pocket. It will be hitting the shops at Christmas time for just £99.99 with pack of ZINK paper priced at £12.99

In 2003, Continental GT revolutionised the luxury coupe market, combining supercar performance and dynamism with remarkable everyday practicality. MARTIN BAXTER REPORTS

A

pieces of luxury machinery in the world- buying a Bentley is buying into a tradition.

s I left the M6 and headed along the A53 to Nantwich, I got the distinct feeling that I was leaving civilisation.

From first glance, not much has changed from the old model, however car enthusiasts would probably notice that the 2011 Continental GT sits significantly lower and wider than its predecessor. This gives the automatic impression that the car is more assertive and, like a British Bulldog, should not be taken too lightly. This would also prove, to the more courageous of drivers, that the car has a lower centre of gravity, helping it to stick firmly to the road even at high speeds. The GT remains a four-wheel drive vehicle but some fine tuning in the transmission department now means that slightly more power is delivered to the back wheels, giving it more of that ‘supercar’ feel.

Three lane motorways became single file country roads; speed signs warned of impending cattle crossings and the possibility of finding a ubiquitous Starbucks for my 9am coffee fix was increasingly unlikely. I was in Crewe - a railway town home to a league two football team and acres upon acres of verdant fields peppered with sheep and other signs of farm life. As a city dweller, I was used to the metropolitan lifestyle of fast cars, fast food and fast money what business did I have being out in the sticks? It was a touch of irony therefore that I had actually left the city to come in search of an entity that characterised the city’s culture of prosperity and wealth.

Photo: Ben Quinton

“The Continental GT was our key car responsible for the rebirth of the Bentley brand after the separation of Rolls Royce and Bentley.

I came in search of a Bentley. I had been granted an audience with the creator of the newest edition to the Bentley bloodline; a younger, more beautiful 2011 Continental GT. But before I would lock horns with the creator and his latest creation, I was given an exclusive tour around the 60-acre site by a young gentleman from the Bentley Experience Team. As we wandered around showrooms, build halls and workshops, my guide breezed through a lifetime of ‘Winged-B’ history as effortlessly as he promised the new Continental GT would accelerate from 0-60 mph.

As I walked around the car, inspecting the spotless, edgy bodywork, I was joined by Raul Pires, head of Exterior Design and one of the masterminds behind Bentley’s new generation. He explained:

“In the 90 years of Bentley history, Bentley produced about 16,000 cars. In the past 7 years we’ve made 23,000 of the GT alone,’ he laughed.

Photo: Ben Quinton

The tour and the preceding luncheon wasn’t a subtle technique at ensuring my writing a favourable review of Bentley’s latest automotive venture. It was simply to put their newest creation in context. It was like a father showing me his family tree before discussing the possibility of taking his daughter’s hand in marriage. Bentley Motors is steeped in a rich history and heritage, making their cars some of the most sought after

His laughter was born out of incredulity rather than arrogance. It was an amazing feat. Raul and his diverse team of exterior designers had created a car that had changed brand Bentley forever. Instead of being the toys of the ruling elite, driven once a year and polished daily, Bentley was now attracting the nouveau riche, a younger customer who wanted luxury and sport sans the smoking jacket and matching gloves. The newly sculptured exterior showcases quality and integrity and encases an all new, more powerful W12 6.0 Litre engine. Five hundred and sixty seven sophisticated show horses fit neatly under the sculpted bonnet of the car producing 516lb/ft of torque at 1700 rpm, and steering wheel mounted sequential gear shift takes you from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 198 mph. >

VIVA 61

VIVA e x c l u s i v e I will leave figures on fuel consumption and emissions to the poor Bentley sales team but I will add that, interestingly, Bentley has responded to political and industrial pressures to develop more environmentally friendly alternatives to their traditionally large gas guzzling engines. Raul leaked that a new high-output 4.0 litre V8 engine option for the GT will be introduced in late 2011, cutting CO2 emissions by 40% and potentially making the Continental GT the car of choice for tree huggers and Clarkson clones alike. Raul continued. “I wanted the car to be recognised as a GT, so I wanted the car to have the key character lines that made the traditional GT so striking, but I wanted it more modern and contemporary.” The result was a distinctive ‘chiseled jaw’ feature resting above the front wheels and a more apparent haunch above the rear wheels, which was arguably the previous generation GT’s most characterful line. The only significant change was a ‘double-horse shoe’ design at the rear of the car, similar to it’s larger, four door cousin, the highly revered Mulsanne. “You can see a bloodline from the R type from the 50’s the previous generation and the 2011 GT; you see a natural evolution of these three lines and I wanted that to remain.” The interior has received a fitting upgrade, with the usual Bentley options of Burr Walnut wood grains to high gloss veneer finishes and a comprehensive range of leathers. The hides of 11 Scandinavian bulls will cover the inside of your bespoke Bentley from the door panels to the steering wheel. State of the art infotainment systems will also ensure you get from A-B as safely and as entertained as Walter Owen Bentley himself would have wanted. As I left the back roads of the A53 and found my way back to the M6, I realised that I hadn’t left civilisation in leaving the city, I had found it - out in the sticks, in Crewe, at the Bentley garage. ■

VIVA C U I S I N E VIVA DOES THE COUNTDOWN TO MANCHESTER’S FINEST CHRISTMAS DINNERS.... IN 2ND POSITION: The English Lounge, 64-66 High st, Manchester, M4 1EA Tel: 0161 832 4824 E: englishlounge@btconnect.com

The Didsbury: Chicken & honey paste

The Didsbury: grilled premium salmon fillet with white wine and pesto sauce

IN 3RD POSITION: The Didsbury, 852 Wilmslow Road, Didsbury, Manchester, M20 2SG, Tel: 0161 44 55 389 W: www.thedidsbury.co.uk E: office@thedidsbury.co.uk This characteristic pub dates back as far as 1644 and has been a massive part of Didsbury’s history. The pub was previously well known as the Ring O’ Bells, and with its traditional features and bustling atmosphere, we chose The Didsbury to be voted the 3rd best restaurant/bar for our Christmas dinner countdown! We would definitely recommend this traditional pub as a great place to enjoy your Christmas festive season, either with close friends, a partner or as a large group. With a huge variety of choices on the menu, The Didsbury can please the fussiest of customers and you can design your meal around what you like best. For the starter, I chose the chicken and honey pate with cranberry sauce, toasted baguette and dressed leaves. The liver had a great texture and, with the baguette lovely and hot and straight from the oven, it was a great start to the meal. As I was feeling a little full from the baguette, for my main I opted for something a little lighter and chose the seasoned, grilled premium salmon fillet with white wine and pesto sauce, served with all the traditional trimmings. The salmon makes a great change from choosing meat, and was cooked well and complimented by the great tasting sauce. Last but not least (and after u doing the top button on my jeans!), I chose the home-baked winterberry crumble with thick creamy custard. The crumble was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented with your own pot of custard – yummy! There are a few different menu choices available at The Didsbury this Christmas. The festive menu starts from £16.99 and is available from 22nd November. The Christmas day menu consists of four courses and costs £54.99 per adult and £32.99 per child, and is of course exclusive for 25th December. Boxing Day and New Year menus are also available.

The Didsbury: winterberry crumble

King prawn salad

Roast turkey

This fantastic pub is situated at the centre of the Northern Quarter across the road from the Arndale centre. The English Lounge is a mustvisit traditional pub with leather sofas, bookshelves loaded with books, prints on the walls and lots of dark wood, all setting a cosy, homey mood that is great for those cold winter Christmassy nights. When deciding who should take our number one spot, it was a toss-up between The English Lounge and The Mark Addy, and it was a very close call indeed. After a long discussion we decided to put The English Lounge in second position. Once again the Christmas menu at this venue is very extensive, and with four starters and dinners to choose from and three deserts, there’s something for everyone at The English Lounge! We briefly spoke to Head Chef Sarah, who told us that all produce is bought in fresh and even the sauces are all homemade. To start with I chose the king prawn salad with a lime and chilli dressing on a bed of green leaves and spring onions. The prawns were a good size (and cooked to perfection) and the sauce was fantastic – zesty, with a hint of spice. Unfortunately, however, even though we asked really nicely, The English Lounge would not part with the secret recipe! For my main, I of course opted for the traditional roast turkey served with stuffing, all the trimmings, homemade gravy and a huge Yorkshire pudding. The English Lounge is definitely a home from home experience, and you can tell that everything is cooked from fresh ingredients and with a lot of care (just like when your mum lovingly prepares dinner on Christmas day). The turkey was deliciously moist and succulent, the roast potatoes were beautifully cooked (crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside) and the home-made cranberry sauce was perfect. Feeling rather stuffed, I thought I would relax a minute with a glass of pinot grigio before my desert - a trio of mini chocolate puddings. The presentation was phenomenal and once again they were all home-made and baked to perfection. They looked absolutely divine and my favourite was definitely the toffee cheesecake! There are two different menu choices available at The English Lounge. The Luncheon menu (£25.00 per person) and the Dinner menu (£30.00 per person), Both are brilliant and Viva would definitely recommend visiting The English Lounge this Christmas! The English Lounge will be in full Christmas spirit from 1st December. >

IN 1ST POSITION: The Mark Addy, Stanley Street Salford, Manchester, M3 5EJ Tel: 0161 832 4080 W: www.markaddy.co.uk E: info@markaddy.co.uk Picturesquely situated along the Manchester canal opposite Spinningfields, The Mark Addy is a perfect example of a traditionalEnglish-pub-cum-restaurant, and recently won the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ Award as part of the Manchester Food and Drink Festival 2010, thanks to its style, delicious real ales, and its commitment to preparing locally sourced English food. The restaurant now comes with a brand new outdoor dining area, complete with a 10ft x 8ft steel barbeque and spit - perfect for large parties and special occasions, such as those traditional summer-time hog-roasts. However, summer is sadly long gone, and we at Viva can now hear the faint tinkling of sleigh bells approaching, so myself and Viva Editor Rebecca Legon went to The Mark Addy to sample a selection of dishes from their Christmas menu. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Manager John and Assistant Manager Kevin and shown to our table, a very nicely appointed booth in the main restaurant area. The décor of the restaurant is immediately comfortable – simultaneously elegant and homey – and the atmosphere is very warm and friendly, which makes it the perfect place to wind down after a hard day at the office. Assistant Manager Kevin was extremely attentive, and, as we pored over the menus, brought us

a bottle of Pinot Grigio from Pavia (Lombardy, Wild game terrine

Mushroom & garlic pud

Italy), a very smooth yet fruity white wine which would prove a perfect compliment to our meal. The Mark Addy has four Christmas menus, and we just couldn’t decide which one to choose, so Kevin kindly recommended a dish from each, so that we could sample something from across all of the menus. For the starters, we began with spiced fishcakes with baby leaves and chive mayonnaise, and wild game terrine with port wine jelly. The fishcakes were beautifully prepared - delicately battered, light and full of flavour. To describe them as ‘melt-inthe-mouth’ would be an understatement. The wild game terrine was also a very tasty appetizer, luxurious and yet not too rich, with the port wine jelly adding a delightful ‘zing’ to the dish. On to the mains, where we were presented with roast capon with all the trimmings, and portabella mushroom and garlic pudding. The roast capon was delicious – succulent with mouth-wateringly crispy skin – and the same care and consideration had obviously been taken when preparing the tender and zesty vegetables that came with it. The mushroom pudding was a nutty, smoky and very hearty main, with the tangy red cabbage providing a perfect complement to this savoury dish. Before the pudding arrived, we were treated to a glass of a very rich and luxurious port – a real taste of Christmas, and possibly the most

VIVA 69

festive drink you can indulge in at this time of year (next to brandy and mulled wine, of course!). By now we were feeling very relaxed and contented, so the arrival of the pudding was perfectly timed. A very indulgent trifle, served in a large cocktail glass, was placed before us, and the cheese platter came with it, so that sweet could compliment savoury. By this point we were already pleasantly full, but we just couldn’t let ourselves miss out on this gorgeous dessert and cheese board! We left the restaurant feeling full, satisfied and very relaxed. The atmosphere of this restaurant really is lovely, and the staff could not be friendlier or more welcoming. So, if you’re looking for fine dining in elegant yet comfortable surroundings this Christmas, look no further than The Mark Addy in Salford. The Mark Addy is available for fine dining and private functions of all kinds, including weddings, birthdays, bar mitzvahs and christenings, as well as corporate events such as retirement celebrations and staff parties. Veuve Cliequot prides itself on its motto: “Only one quality, the finest.” And this is exactly what is conveyed through this vintage champagne. Silky and generous, the refined mineral flavour is accompanied with pleasant flowery notes of acacia, hints of yellow-fleshed fruit and pastries, which gives way to delicately spicy aromas. A good choice to compliment Asian cuisine, priced at £42.00

Have yourself a penthouse party at the Light Boutique Hotel... ...And that’s exactly what we did!

V

iva’s very own Rebecca Legon turned 30 in September and, being the party animals that we are, we could not miss this golden opportunity for fun times and so arranged a surprise 30th birthday party at the hottest Penthouse establishment in town - The Light Boutique Hotel in Manchester. The breathtakingly spacious and luxurious Penthouse is situated on the entire 15th floor and plays host to two steaming hot tubs positioned on each side of the terrace, over-looking some stunning views across Manchester. For large parties, this suite holds up to 70 people, and for any guests sleeping over (or who have had a bit too much to drink!) there are 4 double sized rooms. The Light can cater for any event including cocktail parties, photo shoots, networking events and weddings, although we just arranged for some home-made pizzas to be delivered up to us that evening as guests were more interested in the alcohol offerings! The shenanigans kicked off at 9pm with a ‘Scruff Of The Neck’ DJ set, indie rock band ‘Dirty Space Disco’ and special guest rappers ‘The Ghoodfellaz’ setting the music scene for the evening. Viva girl Rebecca was definitely surprised and guests praised the night as one of the best parties they’d attended this year! For more information on booking a party, networking event, wedding or photo shoot at The Light Boutique Penthouse please contact Chatan Patel on 0161 839 4848. ■

VIVA l a s m a n c h e s t e r Celebrities Get a Grilling Former England footballer John Barnes was offered a £1,000 charity donation to perform his famous World in Motion rap – and he didn’t disappoint. The former Liverpool winger rose to the challenge and helped to raise more than £50,000 for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity.

C

elebrity Grilling: The Sequel, hosted by Angus Deayton, saw two celebrity teams going head to head to cook signature dishes, shake things up behind the bar and serve up a unique experience to guests at Restaurant Bar and Grill in Manchester. As well as trying to impress guests with their skills, the two teams had to ensure that their cooking skills met the approval of celebrity Head Chef, Something for the Weekend’s, Simon Rimmer. Captain of the fork team, actor John Thomson, spiced things up with a starter of tandoori prawns while team mate Hollyoaks star Nick Pickard created the main course of slow cooked aged Aberdeen Angus beef fillet with wild mushrooms and butter roast fondant potato. Coronation Street star Samia Smith hoped her delicious desert would be sweet enough to win votes, while co star Brooke Vincent and presenter Terri Dwyer wowed guests with their serving skills and Hollyoaks star Ashley Taylor Dawson stirred things up behind the bar. Knife team captain, former England and Liverpool footballer John Barnes led his team to victory preparing a main of herb roast lobster paella with lemon, with Sale Sharks and Welsh Rugby International Dwayne Peel creating the starter and Bolton Wanderers footballer Ivan Klasnić proving the proof is in the pudding. Helping John’s team on the attack front of house was Blackburn Rovers footballer David Dunn and Hollyoaks star Rachel Hassan. Sale Sharks and England Rugby International Charlie Hodgson proved he had a safe pair of hands while Hollyoaks star Jessica Fox added some fizz along side Charlie serving cocktails. Things really started to heat up in the auction, kindly hosted by Key 103s Mike Toolan and Hugh Ferris, when Simon Rimmer offered up his apron and chef jacket, while a private jet taking the winning bidder on a Champagne flight from Manchester to Paris went under the hammer at £4,000. Other prizes up for grabs in the auction included a Manchester United Shirt presentation with a player, a signed Pele shirt and set tours of Hollyoaks and Coronation Street. Guests were also offered the unique opportunity of a training session with Restaurant Bar & Grill’s Bar Manager to create and name a seasonal cocktail which will run across both Bar & Grill and Piccolino menus, with 50 pence from every sale of the newly created cocktail being donated to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity. Steven Walker, owner of Restaurant Bar and Grill commented: “What an amazing evening made possible by the hard working celebrities and our generous guests. Once again to be sold out and raise over £50,000 for such an important and worthwhile cause is a huge achievement. Thank you to everyone involved.” Maurice Watkins, Chairman of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity added: “Celebrity Grilling: The Sequel was a superb event that would not have been possible without the generosity of Restaurant Bar and Grill and those who joined us for dinner. Our thanks must also be given to the celebrities who kindly gave their time to make this a night to remember. We are delighted that such a fabulous amount was raised on the evening, which will help us to make a difference to children and their families who use the children’s hospital.” Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity is raising money to ensure continued excellence in treatment, care and research at the hospital – improving the lives of thousands of children each year across the North West and beyond. ■

Emporio Armani Launch new Manchester store

Armani set the standard for the newest luxury shopping destination, The Avenue at Spinningfields, in October 2010 by hosting a fabulous cocktail launch party for their new store. Manchester’s most glamourous peeps flocked down to the event with Armani, which did not hold back on the ‘wow’ factor. The event drew huge attention and featured two giant screens playing the store’s adverts whilst guests strutted their stuff down the red carpet to take a glimpse of the new slick and modern store. In the store, the house collections featured the Emporio Armani, EA7 and Armani Jeans for men and women, including formal and casual wear, sportswear, leather accessories, watches, eyewear, and jewellery. More than a fashion boutique, the new store design embodies Giorgio Armani’s vision of the modern, casual lifestyle that Emporio Armani represents. The party continued into the night with guests enjoying the Armani homemade cocktails. The entertainment included a live performance from celebrated new British rock band ‘Everything Everything,’ who played a set from their just launched album ‘Man Alive’ and a DJ set by ‘DJ Erok’. ■

The former Culture Club singer talks to us about his recent collaborations, celebrity Big Brother and a possible re-union Hello George, how are you? I’m very well, thank you.

were in the charts for weeks and weeks but nowadays you’ve got this virtual record shop so it’s always there. A record can keep on selling over a period of time, so You’ve recently finished your new single for me I’m not particularly bothered. Today there are ‘Sunshine into your life’, that you produced so many other ways of doing things, so unless you’re and wrote with Marc Vedo, tell us about it? a big pop artist I don’t think it really matters. If you want to be in the charts you have to compromise quite Well, it’s a song that I wrote with Marc and it’s sung by Sharlene Hector, a Bassment Jaxx vocalist. We are a lot. Everybody is kinda making the same record now, about to sign it to one of the it’s all very formulaic, you dance labels so it probably know? I listen to a lot of pop I listen to a lot of pop music won’t be out ‘till next year music and I sometimes and I think what is this s**t think: what is this shit? now. Everybody now puts these weird effects on their Do chart positions and sales figures still voices, you know? That kinda Cher thing? What are matter to you? they doing! Can’t they sing? But there is always Not really because it’s very different now. Today great music being made and I think the Internet plays you can sell records in different ways, you’ve got the a huge part in that. > Internet and viral campaigns. In the old days records

VIVA 86

This year you completed a tour of Italy. Do you enjoy it over there? I could literally live in Italy, I’m pretty much there every week. It’s one of the places that I play most as a DJ. You have also been DJ-ing throughout Asia. What are the fans like there? They’re great! The thing about club music and DJ-ing is that all around the world there are always people dancing, it’s a huge phenomena and the music kind of translates wherever you go. You have recently finished studio projects with Mark Ronson for his new album ‘Record Collection’. Can you tell us about this, and have you got any other collaborations lined up? There are rumours of Lady Gaga...? I’m going to be on Mark’s third single, which is coming out in October or November. It’s a track called ‘Somebody to Love Me’. It was really exciting to work with Mark - he’s a great guy and he loves his 80’s music. The rumours about Lady Gaga aren’t true, but I’ve got a track coming out with a band called ‘Glide and Swerve’ that’s coming out quite soon which is called ‘The

“ My mum said that if i went on Big Brother she would leave the country ” Pentonville Blues’, and I’ve been doing work with Harry Choo Choo Romero who is a big DJ, so, yeah, I’m just doing work with lots of different people at the moment which is really exciting.

2010 saw the one-off special BBC drama ‘Worried about The Boy’ revisit the period of your life before Culture Club! Did you find it hard to watch and were you happy with the outcome? I think it looked great, they got the look of it perfect. I thought it was really well done in terms of the styling. There were lots of mistakes the film made but I think overall it was a good show. I’m glad it was made; I think Douglas Booth who played me was gorgeous; he’s a brilliant actor. In 2009 the probation service stopped you going into the Celebrity Big Brother House – Is that something you regret, or when you look back are you ultimately pleased? I think it was a good decision. I realise now it would have been a big mistake to do that, so I don’t regret it not happening. My mum said that if I went on it she would leave the country! I think it can make you look really boring, so I think I had a lucky escape there. The public voted you no. 46 in their top 50 Greatest Britons Ever, beating the likes of King Arthur and Florence Nightingale. Has this public show of support helped you over the last couple of years, and how do you feel about being labelled an “icon” or “legend”? Well I don’t get up in the morning and think ‘oh, I’m a legend!’ or anything like that, but I do get a lot of love from people, especially in this country. I get a lot of affection from people I don’t know and that’s a wonderful thing - I really appreciate it, I’m really lucky. Finally, various 80’s bands seemed to have re-formed over the last couple of years, most notably Spandau Ballet. Could there be a ‘Culture Club’ re-union on the horizon? Well, we have our 30 year anniversary in 2012 so we’re going to do something then. We haven’t decided what we’re going to do yet but we are definitely talking and it’s looking like a real possibility. If we do it we will be going all over the world. ■

bestival

Once upon a time a young and courageous man set out on a mission, the young man sought to bring music, art and peace to these fair isles and defeat the evil climate change. And so he battled across the waters to a land far far away, known as the Isle of Wight, and upon the hill named after one robin he built his kingdom. And when he was done, he invited his friends and fellow eco warriors to revel in his creation. The warriors descended upon the land for a merry weekend of mayhem which would from here on be known as Bestival. >>

N adia ismail REPORTS

T

his year the Robin Hill country park opened it’s floodgates (thankfully, not quite literally!) to some 50,000 Bestivalites, a whopping 20,000 more fantastic festivalgoers than the previous year. So of course in order to accommodate their new friends, Mr and Mrs da Bank had to mix it up a little, calling for a fresh new layout.

The Band: Fat Freddy’s Drop

New for 2010: The wishing tree field was the first fantasy world to enter before hitting the main arena, home to a whole host of new tents it was a an exciting addition for 2010. Chai wallahs proved a resounding success keeping the party going until 6am every day. But it’s most interesting feature had to be the wishing tree itself, a beautiful and magical creation from the outside, cleverly disguising an intimate club on the inside. It was something of a secret haven far from the festival madness, we enjoyed escaping into one of its little nooks and simply letting time pass us by.

Joe Dukie: vocalist Fat Freddy’s Drop

The Music: As always Bestival boasts one of the most impressive line-ups of pure music talent of the summer, to name but a few…hailing from Manchester was Delphic, the Incredible XX, Hot Chip, Dizzee Rascal, Mumford and sons, the Flaming lips, Roxy music, the super mellow Fat Freddy’s Drop and the maniacs The Prodigy. Highlights: The return of the pure genius that is time for tease! Tea, cake, beautiful ladies, fabulous outfits and some seriously sexy dance moves, what’s not to love? Fire. Bestival was piping, Arcadia presents cranked up the heat this year to bring us a jaw-dropping performance; there were flamethrowers, giant insect men and some great dj sets. Fake Blood drew in an astonishing crowd for its surprise set amidst the flames. Of course how could we forget the fancy dress, Alice and her companions lead Santa and Super Mario to the wizard’s den to hang out with the fairies at The Flaming Lips set on the main stage, what a spectacle! ■

VIVA l i v e m u s i c MY NIGHT.....

SCRUFF OF THE NECK Vivas Anna J Westerman reports

V

iva recently attended the Scruff of the Neck night at the Attic, Oxford Road, home to Manchester’s best underground club nights and a definite one to watch on Manchester’s live music scene. The night was organised by promoter and local boy Mark Lippmann. No stranger to performing in bands himself, Mark began his promoting career living above a struggling pub. To draw in the crowds, Mark offered to try his hand at putting a night on, starting with only limited equipment but big ambition. Teaming up with his friend Chris Warr, they have worked together on Scruff of the Neck ever since.

Both Mark and Viva’s favourite act of the night was without a doubt The Ruskins. Mark says; “The Ruskins played at Bennicassim & Hop Farm festivals to name a couple this year, and we’ve had them on twice now, which has been quality. I expect big things of them one day.” The unsigned band from West London have a punchy, ska and rockabilly vibe and vocals to rival Jamie T, and were a definite crowd pleaser. Mid-performance, lead singer Eamon pulled out a banjo christened ‘Bill’ and cranked out a solo piece which was further extended by a rapturous drum solo. A friend and rapper - known only as Marcus - was also on hand to join the band on stage, throwing some old school classic garage hits into the Ruskin’s session in the form of the Architects ‘Body Groove’ with later a mix of Wiley’s ‘Rolex’.

“Our nights are aimed at the local Mancs so there’s generally a comradely atmosphere”

The evening kicked off promptly at 8.30pm and carried on in a similar fast-paced fashion all night. The bands played across two stages, the acoustic stage and the band stage, at opposite ends of the room so that when one band finished the next swiftly began, keeping the crowd on their toes with no drawn out pauses in between acts. The dark, dimly lit and smoky venue was packed to the walls with an eclectic mix of like-minded music appreciates, from students young and old to stylish individuals and 40+ year olds enjoying the show with a beer in hand.

Scruff of the Neck is rapidly becoming the night to watch out for in Manchester. Mark comments: “Our nights are aimed at local Mancs so there’s generally a comradely atmosphere and people get excited about seeing great new bands they never knew existed before Scruff of the Neck.” Mark also does equipment rental and DJ-ing as well as studio recordings and events. www.scruffoftheneck.com ■

MICHAEL STEWART FROM THE VOLANTES

It has been a very exciting time being in The Volantes this year! It all began in January when Laurie Agnew was introduced as the new drummer in the band. This was considered to be a fresh start for us and we were determined to make our mark in 2010. We set out by paying a lot of attention to the music, making absolutely certain that whenever we played to the crowds that came to see us, the performance was seriously tight, energetic and super-powerful with raw emotion. After a lot of hard work and planning we began the campaign for our debut single “Woke Over Hung Up” by holding the pre-launch show at Moho (Manchester). The night was a great success and the fans were able to pre-order copies of the single with a collection of other merchandise on sale too. The track had already been laid down by this point, professionally produced and mastered, and was ready and waiting to be unleashed for all to hear.

“ The music

video has already found its way on to Sky Channel ‘Lava TV’ ”

Following the pre-launch, we began working closely with Spiral Static Productions that offered to create a music video for the single. At the beginning of September this was aired, receiving fantastic feedback from the fans. The music video has already found its way on to Sky Channel “Lava TV” and is still being requested and played regularly. Finally, the single was released on the 4th October into the official UK charts, available to buy in HMV, or download from iTunes & Amazon. That week, we had adverts being played on both XFM and Rock Radio and TV adverts going out on Q TV the week after. We’ve seen a massive increase in popularity from this single release and we are now planning the next release for sometime soon in the future. Exciting times!!” ■

Ric O’Barry

Ric O’Barry used to capture dolphins, taking them from the oceans and training them to entertain us. but then he had a change of heart

H

aving made a name for himself in the 1960s as one of world’s principal and most famous dolphin trainers in the world, Richard O’Barry has spent the last 38 years fighting a pioneering campaign to abolish dolphin captivity. After leaving the navy, O’Barry began training dolphins in the 1960s working for Miami Sequariam. He captured and trained five dolphins for the American TV series Flipper. After a poignant moment when a female Bottelnose dolphin named Kathy died in his arms, he dramatically changed his attitude towards keeping dolphins in a captive environment. O’Barry maintains that Kathy committed suicide due to the stress enforced upon her during her training sessions, and saw the harsh and cruel reality these remarkable creatures were being subjected to. Kathy’s death was a turning point in Ric’s life and the multi-billion dollar industry he spent 10 years establishing,

for the last 38 years, he has spent in a courageous battle trying to tear it down. In 1970 on the first Earth Day, aptly in conjunction with celebrating the Earth’s natural environment, O’Barry launched the Dolphin Project, a scheme devoted in its entirety to freeing captive dolphins. After recognising that dolphins are conscious and self-aware creatures, highly intelligent and extremely sensitive to sound, O’Barry understood that these complex wild animals simply did not belong in confinement. The Cove is an explicit and controversial documentary detailing the corruption surrounding this substantial commercial industry. Taiji is the focus of O’Barry’s The Cove, as it is the world’s largest supplier of dolphins to marine parks and swim with dolphins programs. A dolphin’s primary sense is a very much-heightened awareness of sound. O’Barry reveals an excess amount of noise causes a tremendous amount of stress

to dolphins. The Cove therefore emphasizes the cruelty in keeping dolphins entrapped in concrete containers surrounded by large screaming crowds. It accents the dolphins’ collective depressed and stressed responses to these elements. The documentary also discloses not only the cruelty involved in training dolphins; it proclaims that the Japanese government are permitting the slaughter of an estimated 23,000 dolphins a year. The majority of these killings are undertaken in the intimate cove of the idyllic town of Taiji. O’Barry encapsulates the barbaric and inhumane means by which the Taiji fishermen slay these helpless animals, with very poignant imagery. The nucleus of O’Barry’s crusade is the proven scientific fact that dolphin meat is heavily laced with mercury, which is the most toxic non-radioactive element on earth. Dolphins have five times the maximum allowable level of mercury. O’Barry argues these Taiji fishermen

VIVA 94

are distributing incredibly toxic goods to Japanese citizens, and the strict governmental controls over Japanese media, means the public are unaware of the severe health issues that could result from consumption. The Cove therefore seeks to educate and communicate the truth behind these harrowing dolphin killings. O’Barry argues that it is the greed of capitalist giants who reinforce the slaughtering, and not (as argued by them) the difference in cultures between Eastern and Western ideals. As The Cove has evocatively discovered, these merciless killings are ultimately focussed around a monopoly of industrial trade, at the expense of Japanese democracy. The Cove depicts a powerful message, and urges people to make a combined effort in prohibiting the ongoing slaughter, and supporting the freedom of these magnificent beings. Words: Carla Griscti

Ric with Flipper

VIVA I N T E R V I E W In The Cove you touch on the various misconceptions that people have towards dolphins held in captivity, such as how they can appear to look happy but can actually feel quite the opposite! Can you expand on this?

For our readers who haven’t seen The Cove, could you summarise what it is about? The movie? It’s about a lot of things. It’s a complex story about how we treat the earth; how we treat dolphins; mercury contamination; it’s biographical; it’s my life story, pretty much. To tell you the truth, I’ve gone around the world twice to screenings: I show up for the last 15 minutes and do Q & As, I don’t see the movie. I saw a rough cut at Sundance a year or so ago, but I haven’t seen it all the way through, it’s too personal. When you look at the movie you’re seeing a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, and I’m seeing in-between the lines. I see my whole life laid out there: I’ve seen births, deaths, marriages, divorces, jail cells and court rooms, so it’s hard for me to watch. So, to go back to the beginning, do you remember your first encounter with a dolphin?

Well, a dolphin’s smile is nature’s greatest deception; it creates the illusion that they actually like doing the job. Because they are dolphins with jobs, and it’s a very boring job because they do a repetitive routine over and over again, 7 days a week. We bore them to death; we literally bore them to death. You also mention how dolphins have to make a conscious effort to breath and that you believe that Flipper committed suicide in your arms. Can you explain this? Well, dolphins are not automatic air-breathers like we are, that is why they don’t sleep. Every breath they take is a conscious effort, so you have to think about that for a few minutes because this means that if life becomes too unbearable they just don’t take the next breath. And this happens over and over again at The Cove in Taiji Japan - they give up and they just don’t take the next breath, and they sink to the bottom.

in different aquariums and dolphin swim programs - in fact, I’m leaving tomorrow for Egypt where there are 4 dolphins just being kept in a swimming pool at somebody’s house. Do you think it is the differences in attitudes and cultures between the Japanese and the Western world that is one of the biggest barriers in terms of fighting this issue?

Yes. Japan is a special case because people My first encounter with a dolphin was on there don’t have the information that we take Miami Beach. I remember standing in the for granted. Most people in Japan don’t even sand, looking out to the surf, holding my know that this takes place, they don’t even know mothers hand. I couldn’t about whaling. The filmmakers were of a human being like that, almost like it’s a financed by Jim Clark, a billionaire who startreflex, an instinct that they are compelled to ed Netscape, so they pretty much had a blank obey. I didn’t realise it immediately. It took a while, but I remember the first time that I took the television set down to the water to show Flipper the dolphin the television show ‘Flipper’, and I realised then that they are self-aware. And with that knowledge comes responsibility, and that means that they don’t belong in captivity.

So what has happened to the fisherman in Taiji since the film’s release? Well, they are still there and the dolphin killing continues. They haven’t actually been killing dolphins up until today (21st Sept 2010), today is the first day that they have killed them. They have been capturing them and putting them

Blood bath: Taiji fisherman spears dolphin

Throughout the documentary you are constantly followed by police and threatened by the fishermen and Japanese mafia, the Yakuza, what have been your scariest moments throughout this campaign? Every time I’m there it’s scary because the Japanese mafia are involved and they’re a very real threat. If you have a problem with somebody in one of these villages, you don’t call the police, you call the Yakuza and whoever is causing the problem simply disappears. So every moment is a scary moment there now because the fisherman are getting angrier and angrier as the film is shown around the world, and it’s now popular in Tokyo and that makes them angry. Barbaric slaughtering: fisherman throw spears

Do you ever fear for your life? Yes, every time I go there. What happened to you after the very emotional closing scene in the film where you enter the room where the International Whaling Commission are meeting?

The

I was literally thrown out onto the street, and my TV screen got broken. I was trying to bring attention to what happens in Japan, where 23,000 dolphins are slaughtered every year. People don’t seem to understand: dolphins are whales. Everybody bottom line is they are killing the dolphins for their at the IWC (Intermeat, but the meat is poisonous. national Whaling Commission) is talking about 1000 whales in the southern ocean, but they’re not talking about the 23,000 other whales that are being killed in Japan each year, it’s not even on the agenda. So the purpose of me doing that was to expose that lack of Ric holds dolphin meat understanding, and the movie does that also - it exposes how in a Japanese market often labelled whale meat incompetent and dysfunctional the IWC is.

There are some people that may say that if you want to save dolphins, save pigs and cows as well. The clear difference is that pigs and cows are obviously bred specifically to eat, what else would you say about this comparison? Well, you can’t really compare the two. That’s comparing wildlife with domesticated animals, and I don’t think you can do that, but slaughterhouses are a problem and there are people working on that. The dolphin has a brain larger than a human, and they are self-aware, but they are also contaminated with mercury so when people are killing dolphins for meat they are eating this contaminated product. So the bottom line is they are killing the dolphins for poisonous meat. So this takes the issue out of animal welfare and puts it into the arena of human rights. Japanese people have no idea that it’s contaminated because the government won’t tell them. 23,000 dolphins are slaughtered every year

So how far has the campaign progressed since the release of The Cove - have there been any significant changes? No, there hasn’t. There’s a new element called defiance; they’re being defiant now and they’re just digging their heels in and killing dolphins in spite of the fact that the world is opposed to it. Finally, what one message would you want to give viewers of the film and the readers of our magazine? Well, I would tell them to go to www.savejapandolphins.org and get educated. There’s a lot of factual information on there and people can take action on this site. We have a petition that 1.7 million people have signed so far, so that’s what I would ask people to do: support us and help us to end the senseless killing of dolphins. ■

Fun Lovin’ Criminals – Classic Fantastic

I

t’s been a rocky five years full of legal dramas for the Fun Lovin’ Criminals. In which time the members of the band have explored other avenues in all aspects of creative outlets, most noticeably Huey who snagged his very own radio show on BBC Radio 6 to great acclaim. However they are finally back to doing what they are best at with their new album. Classic Fantastic fused together all that made the UK fall in love with FLC back in the 90’s – slick beats and a light hearted, tongue-in-cheek attitude. They describe this album as “making you dance

1964. It also features a deluxe booklet with in-depth liner notes by famed music historian Colin Escott as well as rare photographs from around the same era. When listening to this collection Dylan’s growth as an artist and songwriter is evident as the years progress, with a bonus 15 songs that have never been officially released to the public until now. With these recording being universally regarded as some of the most important recordings ever, the public can finally get their hands on a piece of music history and every song still sounds as ground-breaking today as it did 50 years ago. It is in stores on Monday 18th October. like a whirligig and laugh like a kookaburra perched up in a disco gum tree.” Now who can resist that? This feel good party album, which is intended to celebrate the end of the bands troubles, has some rock hits such as “The Originals” however still does have some more mellow song such as “El Malo” which ensures this album is far more than a simple comedy album. FLC are on tour in September with their new double A-side ‘We, the three’/ ‘Keep on Yellin’ and their album is out now.

The Ting Tings – Hands

L

ocal Manchester band The Ting Tings burst onto the scene in 2008 and dominated the radios and charts with songs such as “That’s Not My Name” and “Shut Up and Let Me Go” becoming the soundtrack to the summer, and after an extensive tour they retreated back into the studio. Although they ventured slightly further from Salford, where their award-winning debut album We Started Nothing was created, and went to a retreat in Berlin where they let their creative

juices flow. Hands is the first single to be released from their new album Massage Kunst, Kunst meaning art in German. It is a lively electro-pop song that was written by both Katie White and Jules De Martino and has been mixed by label mate Calvin Harris. It has a strong 80’s vibe present throughout, although they say that it was inspired by the darker German weather. The songs message is a shout out to everyone working hard in the world and that’s tune we can definitely all dance too!

Kings Of Leon - Come Around Sundown

ome Around Sundown, was released on October 18th, 2010. It was recorded in New York at Avatar Studios and produced once again by Angelo Petraglia and Jacquire King. Come Around Sundown is the follow-up to the hugely successful Only By The Night, which sold over six million copies worldwide and garnered four Grammy Awards and two Brits. It’s yet another bold and expansive statement by the Nashville, Tennessee-based quartet who, in the last two years, have become one of the biggest bands in the world; also one of the most creatively restless.

As proven throughout their storied career, Kings of Leon love to work. Whether writing, recording or touring, the band is constantly in motion. Once they finished touring in support of Only By The Night at the end of October of 2009, they went back in the studio to record in February 2010 and came up with this little beauty- Come Around Sundown. The Kings Of Leon are on tour throughout the UK in December 2010 and will be returning to the MEN Arena in Manchester on the 13th December getting us all in the mood for a top Christmas!
