The Radar Bye-bye, woollies!
Banishing our thermals to the back of our wardrobes after a miserable winter of fashion hibernation has given us Viva girls great satisfaction - hello dresses, bare legs and sandals!
BBC’s first gay wedding on a soap
SANKEYS- FROM MANCHESTER TO MANHATTAN Sankeys (voted Best Club in the World by DJ Magazine 2010) are spreading their wings to New York. There has been speculation for months about a new super-club in NYC. Now the location has been confirmed and we are all awaiting the opening. The NYC club is going to be situated in the cool nightlife area of Hell’s Kitchen on 50th West Street. The new club will be a former garage that has a capacity of 1100 people - very similar to its older Mancunian brother that is based in a 200-year-old mill. The Sankeys NYC club will have state of the art technology and sound systems, and will play host to the best DJs around. This is not dissimilar to the existing Sankeys in Ancoats, which holds events boasting artists like Calvin Harris, Laidback Luke, Benny Benassi and many more. However, Sankeys NYC is said to be a magical experience unmatched by any other in the world. One of the resident artists in NYC will be the established DJ/producer and former Sound Factory resident DJ A-LUV. No exact opening date has been set just yet, but last we heard the estimate was early 2011. When building the number one club in the world, there is no room for mistakes, which is probably why we’re still waiting - but it will be worth it. And what next? Well, future expansions of Sankeys may include venues in South America and even Asia - so watch this space.
It is the summer of love this year, with Prince William and Kate, Lily Allen, and Kate Moss all getting hitched. Eastenders have jumped on the bandwagon and are having the soap’s first gay wedding between Syed and Christian – the boys even have a chance to become parents with a surrogate. This positive story should restore some joy to the soap after the recent harrowing baby swap and prostitution storylines.

One word - SEQUELS. That’s right, we’re set for an abundance of cinematic sequels this summer with Scream 4, Hangover 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Mission Impossible IV, Twilight 4 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, the final instalment. We’re especially looking forward to the Hangover 2 - how could they possibly top the first! Hilarious.

Areas covered vary from business plans to PR and marketing strategies, which provides you with everything you need to know to get started. This is one of many events designed to help you ‘make it’ - so what are you waiting for? Come on guys, we need more fashion labels to choose from, so hurry up!

What could be more uncomfortable than watching graphic porn in 3D in a packed cinema? Fingers crossed this new 3D craze doesn’t land in England. (some of team Viva wanted to put this in the hot section)!!

KNUTSFORD: THE ROLLS-ROYCE EXPERIENCE

t is easy to get lost in superlatives in the 21st century. We’re surrounded by brands, adverts and celebrities that constantly bombard us with products and reputations that are ‘iconic’, ‘legendary’ and even ‘epic’. Getting bogged down in hyperbole can make us impervious to the real meanings of such words. However, there is one brand for which such words are apt. Rolls-Royce has been at the pinnacle of motoring for more than a century, the brand itself synonymous with precision and performance. Yet, it’s not just its automotive history that sets this brand apart from the rest. Rolls-Royce is style personified. The brand is synonymous with elegance and class. Jon Crossley is the Managing Director of RollsRoyce Manchester. He said: ‘When people think of us, they think of a luxurious saloon car. They think of bespoke, handcrafted quality cars and that is what we have always offered. ‘However, while Rolls-Royce is steeped in history, it is also built for a contemporary world. He added: ‘Our history is very important to us, but RollsRoyce is a very forward thinking company and brand. It is vital we remain on the cutting edge to maintain our reputation in the future.’ So, with a history to rival a royal dynasty and a bright future ahead, it is hard to believe that it can all trace its routes back to a small market town in Cheshire. Sir Henry Royce was living in the town when he teamed up with Charles Rolls to create the now iconic car in 1904. These days, Kuntsford is an affluent and picturesque town, not far from the Peak District National Park. Positioned in such a stunning location, it is surrounded by breathtaking country views and is, or course, home to the gorgeous Tatton Park.

Beautiful scenery at Tatton Park in Cheshire
Besides being a haven for those lusting for the rural side of life, Knutsford is also an excellent place for those questing for a life less ordinary. Whether you’re a more discerning customer who enjoys the finer things in life, or whether you’re more at home with bohemian chic, Knutsford will provide. On the high street, high fashion brands go hand in hand with independent boutiques. As for wining and dining, a host of fine eateries, exclusive hotels and achingly cool bars will keep you in as much haute-cuisine and 19th century sauvignon blanc as your well-manicured hands can hold. It is no surprise, then, that Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Manchester is also based in Knutsford, the spiritual home of the car-maker. Knutsford provides the perfect backdrop to this award-winning showroom and staff that >

recently won Dealership of the Year for UK, Europe and South Africa, and it was these kind souls who offered to chauffeur our intrepid Viva first-ladies, Rebecca and Emma, around the town for their day of luxury (all in the name of journalism, of course...). The Viva girls were picked up in a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a car that demands to be noticed, yet exudes class. While Premiership footballers tend to go for Ferrari’s and rappers for Escalades, you’ll find only Lords and Ladies on the inside of a Phantom. Their first port of call was Mere Golf Resort and Spa. The Mere Golf and Spa Resort boasts exquisite surroundings and is based in an idyllic country hall. It is also home to all the modern conveniences you would expect from a high-end establishment. Viva’s intrepid pair spent a couple of hours at the stunning new Spa. Each had a pair of treatments and were suitably impressed by the service, facilities and general ambiance. The only complaint they had was the lack of time. Rebecca said: ‘The Mere is a first class pampering experience, but I recommend you visit for at least a half day, as a couple of hours just is not enough to enjoy its full potential!’ Her Viva partner-in-crime, Emma, agreed, and added: ‘This is a true luxury spa and the range of treatments is very comprehensive. I’d recommend it to anyone.’ After being pampered, the Viva duo continued on their journalistic quest through Knutsford, this time to quench their thirst with some pre-dinner drinks. They opted for the charm and character of the Belle Epoque Hotel and Restaurant. Like its illustrious automotive neighbour, Rolls Royce, the Belle Epoque is steeped in Knutsford history and is a local institution. The hotel and restaurant is a family run business and has been in operation for over three decades. In that time, two generations of the Mooney family have turned it into one of the Northwest’s premier wining and dining experiences. While the restaurant business has been going for some 35 years, the gorgeous Belle Epoqe building itself is over a century old. Art Nouvea fireplaces, marble pillars and a secluded rooftop Mediterranean garden all add to the opulent surroundings. With a brand new cocktail menu soon to be launched, this is the perfect location for those pre-dinner drinks.

Tagliata di Mazo and Spiedini di Pesce dishes at Piccolino Restaurant
As sure as night follows day, once you’ve been wined, you have to be dined, and food was definitely next on Viva’s agenda. With our ladies still in the Mediterranean mood after the roof garden at Belle Epoque, they decided on Italian. Piccolino is a nationwide chain of Italian restaurants, but don’t let the fact that it is a chain put you off. Piccolino may be a chain but it offers you a chic dining experience with an informal ambiance, with excellent food and service in comfortable and contemporary surroundings. Our Viva girls were spoilt for choice when it came to food, as the Piccolino menu is extensive and exquisitely prepared. Our intrepid reporters opted for the Spiedini di Pesce, or marinated and skewered king prawns. Speaking of the dish, Emma said: ‘These were succulent, juicy and prepared just right.’ Rebecca also tucked into the Tagliata di Mazo, 10oz of sliced, prime rib eye steak. ‘It was cooked to perfection,’ She said. ‘A really satisfying dish. The food was fantastic, the atmosphere was lovely, and Peter Warden the Duty Manager did us proud with excellent and friendly service throughout the evening this really was a wonderful dining experience.’ ■
MARK RONSON Brit award winning Mark Ronson made a name for himself in the early nineties as a DJ on the New York club scene, but since then, has found great acclaim as an uber-talented record producer. Viva chats to Mark as he begins to work on the Gossip’s new album, his engagement to actress Joséphine de la Baume, his style of fashion and his returned love affair with his DJ decks…

dress. We noticed that GQ recently voted you as most stylish male, so we have to ask: who will be making your suit? Mark: Haha, who will I be wearing? I think it’s more important to concentrate on the dress. The dress should be the main focus on the day. A suit’s just a suit to a man - as long as all the groomsmen are wearing the same colour, it’ll be fine. Viva: What are your favourite labels to wear? Mark: I like Acne, they make great jeans. There is a company called ‘Band of Outsiders’ which is based on the outskirts of LA that I really like. I’m not a fan of sticking to one label, but I pretty much wear the same thing every day now - acne jeans and a shirt. I did do the whole suit thing for a while, but it was hard to keep up with, and I can’t be bothered now. I’ve noticed people come to my gigs dressed up in suits now - and seem to look disappointed when I show up in my jeans! Viva: Now that you’ve finished the film
score for Arthur, would you want to produce the music for films again in the future? Mark: Yeah, definitely. I had Daniel Merriweather on one of my tracks, and the others were instrumentals. I loved doing it. I’ve always loved people who have scored films from the 1950’s to the 70’s - Quincy Jones composed amazing soundtracks that could just define a film. Viva: You’ve been able to collaborate with fading big names such as Duran Duran, Boy George and Simon Le Bon. Do you like working with stars, trying to recapture the spark they once had? Mark: To me, those artists never lost their spark, it’s just the music trends that moved on, not their talent or creativity. I think it was great working with a band like Duran Duran, who I’ve respected all my life. I did want to capture aspects of what I loved from one of their first albums, Rio, but that wasn’t the sole focus of what I set out to do. I was just
happy to work with a band I’ve admired for so long. With Boy George, I had a track and thought: ‘His voice would really work in this, and I want to hear his voice on this’ - it wasn’t about reigniting his career. Don’t forget, all of these guys are still doing gigs and shows across the world, and still have masses of fans. Viva: And, finally, what have you got planned for the rest of this year? Mark: I’ve got some gig dates lined up in the up and coming months. I’m about to start work on the new Gossip album tomorrow, but apart from that, just continuing to make good records, I hope!
Viva: Thanks, Mark, we’ll look forward to seeing you at Parklife! Mark: See you there, Viva! Check out Mark Ronson performing at Parklife Festival on Sunday 12th June . ■ Interview by Rachel Edmond

V.I.P FESTIVAL FEVER Summer-time frivolity just wouldn’t be the same without Glasto’s muddy fields or Global Gathering’s questionable taste in recreational medicines. VIVA understands that whether you’re young, old, or somewhere in-between, festivals form part of everyone’s summer calendar, both at home and abroad. So it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to our guide on how to do the festivals in style this summer.
Elvis Jesus T, £60 at The General Store, Manchester
Packing is the foundation of a successful festival trip. By taking the necessities (and the luxuries) you will be sure to remain comfortable and well prepared during your expedition. Mulberry knows bags; so you can trust that the Scotchgrain Albany Duffle won’t let you down, even at the more hardcore of festivals (we’re thinking of Reading and Leeds here). The bag looks to all the world like an innocent hold-all; however, to the trained eye and well prepared festival-goer the bag holds a secret - wheels. When your festival comrades aren’t looking, feel free to wheel your belongings to your tent with ease. Note: avoid pot-holes.
Jil Sander T at £265 Harvey Nichols Manchester
Another bag to add to the mix is the Scotchgrain wash bag which can be safely hidden away from view and embarrassment inside the main hold-all. Wash bags are important because without them your toothbrush would be used as a spirit mixer and your Elemis SOS moisturiser would be considered a substance in which to shot at 6pm when the beer has ran out. Take care of your belongings and yourself by stowing your luxury products out-of-sight. So. We have the bags to pack, but what should reside inside them? First and foremost, you will need a product that will assist you in remaining fresh the morning after the night before. From Royal VKB, this travel cup can store cereal in its base and milk in its body. VIVA suggests leaving the cup outside the tent to remain cool until morning. For those readers at a festival for a longer stay than just one day, it is advised to avoid packing a product named The Fresh Traveller out of fear it would mock your situation. Keeping fresh is one obstacle, but keeping dry is a whole other problem. Wet weather gear isn’t pretty and it isn’t lightweight. This, however, from OiPolloi offers a stylish solution. A lightweight waterproof mac that folds away into itself when not required. Ingenious. Stow it in your back pocket when at the stage and, when the heavens inevitably open, whip it out to the amazement of your damp onlookers. Albam Windcheater, £99 at OiPolloi, Northern Quarter
Ray Ban Sunglasses, £125 at Harvey Nichols Manchester
When seeking sanctuary from your tent environment, you’ll want to stand out from the crowd at the stages and in the arenas. Instead of looking bedraggled and in need of a good scrub, you should aim to look as if your outfit was chosen from an array of well suited options from within the depths of your boudoir-like tent. We suggest this Elvis Jesus T which evokes the noise and hype of a loud music festival like VFestival. Team it with these dirtylook Religion Jeans, and you will look totally rock-chic whilst remaining distinctly superior from the rest of the great unwashed. For a more flowerpower summer-lovin’ vibe (eg. those headed for Glastonbury), this take on floral by Jil sander should suffice without evoking the requirement for sappy acoustic guitars and Kum-ba-ya.
Religion DirtyZee Jeans , £85 at The General Store, Manchester
Oh, and one last note: buy Hunter Wellington Boots (suppliers of wellies to both His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and Her Majesty the Queen) and good luck on your festival-going adventures! Words by: Jordan McDowell

V.I.P FESTIVAL FEVER Ladylike clothing in contrasting colour palettes can be adopted by any willing woman. Monochrome injected with vivid neon is an easy way to adopt this style. Colour blocking and clashing prints are also admired this season. Colours and shapes that evoke the seventies are another obvious trend. Coincidentally, this summer is filled with British festivals allowing you to release your inner hippy. Festivals are about combining the fashionable with the practical. So in order to be confident, comfortable and have the best possible time at any festival, organise your wardrobe accordingly. Now Viva will demonstrate how!
Bertie, Purace flat weave gladiator sandals £75 at House of Fraser
Mulberry’s ‘bright pink clipper twill fold-up bag’ is the ideal festival companion. Pile in plenty of essentials then, once you arrive, simply fold it up into its own small pouch. Bright colours will certainly get you noticed this summer and neon’s follow through to makeup and accessories. Scarves are considered a saviour at festivals: not only are they stylish, they can also be used in your hair, as a belt, or even as a shawl as the night gets colder. The Matthew Williamson scarf with tie-dye print and fringe trim combines seventies revival with bright pastel colours to nail two trends in one idyllic scarf, and needs nothing more than a flowing dress to accompany it. For a less flamboyant scarf, look to We Are Owls, a brand dreamt up by three friends who always put fashion and art in the same sentence. Their collection of cashmere and silk-blend scarves will add a cool colourful edge to your attire.
Matthew Williamson Tie-dye silk scarf £255 at Net-a-porter
Wellies are a festival necessity for the quintessential British weather and many designers are creating their own styles, but Hunter wellies remain at the top of the festival footwear charts. But don’t forget to pack a pair of sandals too as your lightweight option. Gladiators are the best style to go for as they allow for festival wandering and go in parallel with the oh-so-slinky summer maxi dress. The unpredictable weather will also leave you thinking about raincoats. The Adidas leopard-print hooded jacket by Stella McCartney has a hood that can be neatly concealed and a self-tie belt, allowing you to show some femininity. Offerings from Stella and Adidas this season bring together stylish outdoor designs with top-level technology.
Diane Von Furstenberg Printed cotton sundress £255.00 at Harvey Nichols
Vivienne Westwood ANGLOMANIA Monday button front top £235.00 at Selfridges
And of course, having a good, reliable raincoat means you can wear whatever you want to underneath, so embrace the catwalk trends! We adore the ‘Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Monday Blouse’ which features monochrome and a print comparable to tribal artwork. It’s cotton so provides good structure whilst keeping you cool - in both senses of the word. An additional feature is the peplum style hem which looks incredible exposed or would also look beautiful tucked within coral coloured shorts. There are many to choose from. The Paul by Paul Smith quilted safari shorts have been well-liked as they are a classic with a twist. The newly revitalised Biba, exclusive to House of Fraser, has an amazing selection of shorts. In terms of styles and fabrics this season, leather, denim or bright coloured options are perfect at a festival. However try to keep your outfit items to a minimum, and go for dresses that look luxurious without needing ironing, such as Diane Von Furstenburg’s sundress, which should be strictly worn with large sunglasses and tousled locks. But whatever you wear when you’re rocking it up this summer, remember to purchase your festival items with an eye to channelling fashion, femininity, and practicality. Words by: Katie Thoburn

he new spa experience located within The Light Boutique Hotel, Manchester.
Set just behind the bustling heart of Manchester city centre, Piccadilly Gardens, you’ll find an oasis of calm – somewhere you can visit whenever you’re feeling stressed, tired or run down, and leave feeling relaxed, revitalised and restored. Imagine Spa opened its doors in winter 2010, and offers a sophisticated alternative to the traditional ‘escape to the country’ for a spa weekend. Here, you can enjoy not just spa therapy, but also retail therapy, as well as stunning views of one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Imagine pride themselves on their ethos of total flexibility, providing a ‘no appointment necessary’ policy, so that anyone in need of some rest and relaxation can just pop in whenever they feel like treating themselves. If you aren’t sure which treatment to have, the welcoming professional therapists can talk you through your options and requirements with a personal consultation and help you choose the spa experience that’s best for you. The spa offers a full range of treatments - suitable for both men and women - including massage, exfoliation, facials, body wraps, and finishing touches such as St Tropez spray tanning, waxing, manicures and pedicures. Imagine spas offer luxurious product brands such as BABOR, Bare Escentuals, Jessica Nails and St Tropez. My visit to Imagine gave me the chance to leave my stresses and strains at the door and enjoy the experience of one of their many excellent spa packages. I opted for the ‘Imagines Luxury Experience’, which included a choice of an exfoliation treatment or luxury facial, and a massage. The sensual oils from the Khanya Sea salt exfoliation treatment revitalised my skin, leaving it buffed, beautiful, and silky to the touch. I would also recommend the hot stone massage: the heated lava stones with the traditional Japanese massage technique of Shiatsu worked their magic deep into my muscles, bringing my mind and body into complete bliss. And, after your treatment, if you’re not quite ready to leave ‘me time’ just yet, the Light Boutique Hotel also provides a state-of-the-art gym complete with personal trainers – or, if you prefer your relaxation in liquid form, there is also a fabulous five star bar. You can find Imagine Health Spas in a variety of locations nationwide. If you would like to find out more about the Manchester spa, please visit www.imaginespa.co.uk/thelight or call 0161 819 1590.
iva goes under the needle with Dermaskin at King St Clinic & Beauty Boutique, Manchester to find out if Botox really works… Botox has had much coverage over the years - for both its positive and negative effects - and became widespread in the 90’s for its anti-aging properties. It was the must-have treatment in Hollywood for stars who wanted to enhance their image and prolong their career. An abundance of natural collagen, elastin and fat gives the
skin its flawless, smooth appeal when we are young. This begins to fade naturally as we age, but the process can be accelerated by such things as environmental factors taking their toll (eg. sun exposure), a poor diet, smoking, and exaggerated muscle movement. Static wrinkles materialize as the skin loses its youthful elements. Today, Botox is widely available and is becoming a quick ‘non surgical’ procedure available in beauty clinics to help turn back the clock. Botox is not just for erasing lines caused naturally by ageing, but can also be used to prevent excessive sweating in problematic areas, and can even be used as a treatment for reducing tension headaches. Dermaskin on Kings Street is run by brothers Dr Vik Gautam and Dr Sid Gautam, who are fully registered NHS GP’s. They specialise in skincare and anti-aging cosmetic surgery. Dermaskin are highly experienced in Botox, dermal fillers, lip

enhancement and facial skin peels, and their practices span across four continents, including their most recent location, Dubai. I choose to try out some Botox for myself as I’ve just turned 30 and decided to treat myself. Dr Vik Gautam of Dermaskin Clinic, Manchester treated me and put me at ease instantly with an attentive and thorough consultation. Once I was happy with the answers to the questions I had about the procedure and what was best for me, I decided to proceed with Botox for my forehead in three places:
near my temples, and in the centre to minimize the wrinkles on my forehead. The results peeked after two days, giving me the smooth, youthful look that I’d been missing from my early 20’s. My skin felt a bit tight and uncomfortable for the first few days, but that feeling soon went away with no problems. The treatment is temporary and lasts up to 6 months, and you should always use SPF 30 skincare products to maintain the outcome. Three months on, and I am still thrilled with my youthful face and would definitely consider it again in the future. At the Dermaskin Clinic, Manchester, prices range from £99 for Botox, £239 for fillers, and chemical skin peels from £239. GETTING TO KNOW: NICKY CLARKE You’ve just launched your new Spinningfields store. Are you excited? Extremely: a few hundred people are coming tonight and there’s a big ‘buzz’ to the event. Manchester was the first salon we opened ten years ago and, despite being unhappy with our original spot, I’m now confident we’ve moved into a brand new environment that’s far more ‘us’ in the gorgeous Spinningfields. Manchester was your first port of call after London all those years ago. What FIRST attracted you to our fabulous city? I have a certain affinity with Manchester; it makes me feel good and is a place of change. Manchester’s a work in progress, and in three years I imagine it’ll be phenomenal. It has London’s diversity and edge but with less distance to travel, and is a hub that works extremely well. You were awarded an OBE for your services to hairdressing in 2008. Do you believe the UK gives its hairdressing industry the acclaim and respect it deserves? Definitely. Twenty years ago we contributed to the development of what hairdressing has become. At the time, publications such as The Financial Times were running full page articles on hairdressers’ charges hitting the £100 mark. This is now the norm, which I think has contributed to hairdressing now being seen as a serious career choice. Financially and creatively, hairdressing is an industry with serious clout. You’re a known media personality, and have appeared on shows such as Celebrity Come Dine With Me and Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. Do you embrace the ‘celebrity’ role or does it just come with the territory? I love doing TV, but I’m not a singer or an actor, so the vehicles I can use are limited. I turn down more than I accept. I’ve rejected ‘…Get Me Out Of Here’ six times, Big Brother have put a lot of money down on the table for me and I’ve said no. I agree to shows (such as 71 Degrees
North) that are less silly and intrusive, and more relevant. I want to keep an element of dignity. However, I am always up for a bit of fun every now and again… One of these appearances was as a guest judge on 2008’s Celebrity Scissorhands. For you, what makes a fantastic hairdresser? Talent: the combination of a natural gift and hard work. Sometimes those who are naturally gifted can become complacent; equally, many hairdressers hone their crafts for years and, though they become great hairdressers, they lack spontaneity and edge. Be dexterous, have a reference point, kindle your interests. What does the future hold for Nicky Clarke? As well as product re-launches, we are opening up our first ever franchise store, which will be in Liverpool! Either later this year or in 2012, I hope to open some sort of academy – this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. So stay tuned… What top tips can you give for ‘getting hair right’? 1. Use the right cleansing products 2. The right hair cut is a base for everything 3. Always aim to make hair look the best it possibly can with the least effort necessary 4. Choose the right colour 5. Know your products: good finishing products give a good look an editorial edge. After the interview, Team Viva headed over to Clarke’s salon for its big launch event (March 31). This star-studded launch showcased some beautiful artwork that could be purchased during the event, and a generous selection of delicious canapés and cocktails for all. The party rolled on to The Alchemist, where the fun went on long into the night as we celebrated this fantastic addition to Spinningfields’ The Avenue. ■ Interview by Matt Horwood

The Naked Goddess: Jeannette Slavinski
VIVA s u c c e s s s t o r y
Poetry in the Heart
War veteran hero: Lt. Norman Harris 94 yrs
I
n an age of blogs and status updates, Tweets and texts, never have words held so much power and potential. No-one understands this better than Jeannette Slavinski – elocutionist, drama teacher, poet and founder of the TheNakedGoddess.com. Created in late 2010, her website encourages people from all backgrounds to submit a poem from the heart focusing on the themes of love and war for inclusion in a book to be published later in the year, all proceeds from which will go to the Help For Heroes Foundation.
to Will so he can see what imagery would suit them, and that will go into the book as well.’
Jeannette & Cleo Roco
For Jeannette, this project is something very close to her heart: ‘I’ve always been a writer of stories and poetry so it was a natural thing for me to follow through,’ she tells Viva. Like her love of poetry, the decision to work alongside Help For Heroes came from a similarly personal place: ‘my father was in the military for over thirty years, so I grew up with a military background.’ ‘He passed away, and I was looking for a charity that I wanted to represent and Help For Heroes was close to home, especially with all the upheaval in the world at the moment, with our troops being sent out to these war-torn countries and coming back injured.’ This isn’t the first charitable organisation Jeannette has had a hand in. Before starting work on TheNakedGoddess.com, she created Pik & Mix, a project that again welcomed submissions from the public and supported the Rapestopper Campaign. Backed by Cosmopolitan magazine, the book was a hit and went on to sell in Waterstones, Amazon and WH Smith. ‘Again, it was something that was close to my heart,’ reflects Jeannette. ‘I went out to put on some plays with orphans in Zimbabwe, and of course they’re all affected by HIV, rape and abuse, so again it was something I had worked closely with so I thought, ‘yeah lets do something for this charity’.’ Visitors to Jeannette’s site are immediately greeted with her credo that declares: ‘There is a poem in the heart of every human being’ – something that she quickly discovered to be completely true. ‘We’ve got 214 poems at the last count, with more coming in,’ enthuses Jeannette, ‘and we’re also going visual with it.’ The Naked Goddess has attracted the attention of some wellknown artists and photographers, including Viva’s personal friends Arturo and Will Wilkinson. ‘At the moment, I’m sending the poems over
Jeannette & Laurence Llewelyn
In addition to artists and photographers, Jeannette’s poetry collective has also attracted some rather well-known admirers. ‘Tara Palmer-Tomkinson has written a little ditty, and of course I got a quote from the great British actor himself: Timothy West,’ explains Jeannette with the website also receiving contributions from exEngland goalie John Farmer. Perhaps one of the biggest influences on Jeannette’s poetry was a chance encounter with a Hollywood icon: Clint Eastwood. ‘I got an invitation to meet Clint and to stay at his ranch in America. He’s such a dynamic character and so inspirational to talk to, such a marvellous human being and humanitarian.’ It was an experience that not only inspired Jeannette to write more poetry, but one that will stay with her forever. ‘When you experience somebody as magnetic as Clint you just cant help but carry that magnetism with you. I mean how many times does somebody get to meet Clint Eastwood?’ ponders Jeannette, ‘I’m just someone from Cheadle-Hulme!’ Could she ever have guessed that her project would become such a success? The short answer to that is a candid ‘No’ followed by a laugh that suggests she’s still shocked at the project’s popularity. ‘It’s been fun to take it onto Facebook and get reactions from perfect strangers that you’ve never met…I’ve even got an American politician on board! It’s been great fun.’

Jeannette & Jeff Golblum
VIVA 51
Of course, the main focus of TheNakedGoddess. com is to comfort all those directly affected by war, and as Jeannette explains to Viva, they too have poetry in their hearts. ‘I’ve had people from the forces who have written to me and each one has a sad tale to tell with each poem they’ve sent,’ says Jeannette. ‘And I’m not touching the poems- they’re not being edited, because that’s the most natural form they’ve been sent in, right from the veins of the heart down onto the paper.’ Her love of poetry aside, the real pleasure for Jeannette lies in the chance to provide a platform and a voice for those returning from battle, something that she’ll continue to do throughout 2011. ‘To be able to put the thoughts of these people into the book, their prayers and poems, and let them feel the goodness that these words are offering, and the condolences they’re offering in memory of their loved ones and lost ones - it’s just beautiful.’ ■ words: Simon Bland

ven in these frugal times, nobody can accuse Bang & Olufsen of settling for second best. The B&O brand has remained synonymous with luxury and a dedication to providing bold, uncompromising visions of the future of audiovisual entertainment for today’s most discerning customers. Putting their best and their brightest to work with the understanding that, aesthetically and technologically, only the best will do, the company has created a new range of products that together summarise everything that sets B&O apart from its competitors. I was provided with access to three of those flagship products by Graham Stewart and the team at B&O’s Manchester store: the BeoVision 10 LED television, BeoCom 5 telephone and BeoSound 8 docking station (which is designed to accommodate the full Apple range, from iPod Nano to iPad). The BeoVision 10 is a triumph of understated design, blending a peerless 1080p LED panel and characteristically superb speaker setup into a slim frame of gleaming aluminium in 32, 40 and 46-inch variants. It is the antithesis of the trend for TVs as statements, designed to put industry-leading technology into the most refined of homes as unobtrusively and effectively as possible. Known as they are for their borderline-obsessive acoustical engineering, it’s taken a surprisingly long time for B&O to apply that knowledge to the ubiquitous iPod docking station. The eventual result is the BeoSound 8, which marries a unique conical design with a strong ethos: big sound from small speakers.
Speaking of sound, a cordless phone is perhaps the last place you’d expect audio technology to land, but the BeoCom5 inherits principals from B&O’s renowned loudspeakers to produce a sound that they claim is the next best thing to talking in person. Handset displays can be customised, and the BeoCom 5 boasts the same sleek and confident lines as its bigger brothers. The machined aluminium speaker base certainly creates convincingly natural speech reproduction, and the capacity for two separate telephone lines means that conference and personal calls
are neatly split and always clearly heard. After spending a good amount of time with each (the BeoSound 8 in particular had me digging out favourite live recordings and increasing the volume to neighbour-threatening levels), I’m convinced that whichever B&O product you pick, you’re buying an experience – one that is assured by an unmatched history of dedication to detail and investment in creating the very best that money can buy, in this range or any other.

A VERY BRITISH SPORTING SUMMER simon moore REPORTS
Britians No.1 Andy Murray
S
o you’ve already finished your summer reading list. You’ve run out of lemon slices for your G&T. Your partner thinks that applying your sun-block in stripes so you look like a grilled sole is funny. It’s high time you found something to do. But what? Since you ask, London 2012 isn’t so far away now; so why not get yourself into the habit of watching athletes do incredible things with their bodies, horses and cars and tennis balls? There are any number of championships and tournaments knocking about, so it’s only fair you know what’s happening where and when, and what you should turn up with. We all need to ask at some point, so let’s answer those Frequently Awkward Questions now.
The Wimbledon Championships (20th June – 3rd July)
Cowes Week
Strawberries and cream. Whiter-than-white shorty-shorts. Animalistic grunts from grown women. All these things existed before 1877, but it took one Major Walter Clopton Wingfield and his invention of ‘Sphairistike’ (ancient Greek for ‘the art of playing ball’) to sow the seeds of modern lawn tennis and bring them all together. Wimbledon centres around five main events: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. As for rules, nobody has actually yet worked out how to play lawn tennis. The arrangement so far has been that two players stand either side of a net and try to keep the ball in the air as long as possible. Once the Umpire has declared ‘Love’, both players hug and toss a coin to see who gets to win. Year after year, Wimbledon captures the British public’s attention, ever hopeful that this will be the year Britain wins an event. It’s optimistic to say the least; as we haven’t won a Singles event since 1977. Still, anything can happen, and everyone knows it. Its little wonder tickets are only sold by public ballot. Most tennis fans just have to chance their luck on getting a space on Murray Mound with a picnic blanket and a pair of binoculars.
VIVA S P O R T S Cowes Week
Cowes Week (6th – 13th August)
The crowd at Royal Ascot Racecourse
The longest-running sailing regatta in the world, Cowes Week takes place on the Solent, a strait of turbulent water between the southern coast of England and the Isle of Wight. The unusually strong double tides between these two chunks of land guarantee excitement, unpredictability and any amount of capsizing. The appeal for the spectator speaks for itself. Over a hundred thousand people travel to Cowes every year for the same thing; a vibrant festival atmosphere, cocktail parties on yachts, live music in the sunshine, and let’s not forget the boats. Something like a thousand boats take part in the regatta, with eight and a half thousand sailors racing each day, to say nothing of the kaleidoscope of spinnaker colours, each belonging to any of a vast range of boat classes. It’s not just the scale, either. Amateurs cruise alongside Olympic and World Champions, navigating any one of thirty different courses, making for a sporting event genuinely unlike any other. For the competing sailor, the attraction is something more personal. It’s them against the elements; an incomparable feeling of freedom as they jack-knife through the water, running on pure adrenaline and a waterproof packed lunch. Ted Heath, former Prime Minister and world-class yachtsman, summed up the bizarre thrill of the sport best, declaring it was ‘like standing under a cold shower tearing up twentypound notes.’ So, straw hats and cocktails on the Solent, or a soggy wallet? Your choice.
Royal Ascot (14th – 18th June) This is it. The social event of the year. Royal Ascot, an imitable blend of tradition, pageantry, and small men on horses. Flutterers, strutters and professional horse fanciers come together to gamble away the inheritance and see what everyone else is wearing. And on no other day is this more true than Ladies’ Day. Whether you’ve made it into the >

Silver Ring, the Grandstand, or the dizzy heights of the Royal Enclosure, the understanding is that race goers dress with formality and good taste. For women, a fascinator and formal dress (below the knee if she hopes to get into the Enclosure). For men, a suit with shirt and tie, or top hat and tails. Spaghetti straps and mini skirts are frowned upon; man-kinis are right out. It might sound monstrously formal and restrictive, but many women relish the challenge of finding something dazzling and original to wear to Ascot. Queuing for the bookmaker becomes an art form in itself, as the average race goer must quickly learn to dip, duck, dive and dodge around the various millinery creations standing between him and a 5/1 wager on Billion Dollar Brian in the 2.30. Still, it’s all part of the fun and high spirits of a day at the races.
Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone (8th – 10th July)
Silverstone
For the petrolheads out there, there’s a whole other kind of race they have in mind this summer. Far from the parading and Queen-spotting of Ascot, spectators at Silverstone are more concerned with how the drivers balance their throttle on the track’s famously gruelling bends and twists. There’s no dress code or etiquette for F1 fans – but if you are camping over the full weekend, it is expected to at least paint your face like a chequered flag. This is so you can recognise your friends as you roam amongst thousands of other identical McLaren t-shirts. 85 years after the world’s first Grand Prix at Silverstone, the track is still a world-class attraction, with a circuit nearly four miles long, adored by drivers the world over for its devilish complexity and its gauntlet of uniquely feisty challenges. This is the definitive motorsport; fun and finesse screeching round a hair-pin bend, side by side.
Lancashire County Cricket Club at Old Trafford (Ongoing) Gambling and racing are fine and good in their way, but they’re just not cricket. The game has tied communities together for centuries, and it isn’t about to stop. Cricket fans from age eight to eighty flock to Old Trafford to watch their heroes play, whether they’re batting, bowling or fielding the furthest reaches of the oval.
Lancashire Cricket Club
Matches at the LCCC can range from the world-class Old Trafford Internationals to the inter-county Twenty20s, but the real highlight for any family is the Saturday Club. Cricketers aged 5 to 11are invited to play on the world-famous grounds, learning the spirit of the game from professional coaches. There’s even a girls-only club, teaching the slightly older ones, away from the distraction of pesky, smelly boys. Short of disguising themselves in shorts and Ben 10 shirts though, adults will have to make do with the delightful abundance of fixtures pencilled in for this summer. Come to think of it, it’s the same story all over with this year’s summer sporting events – we are completely spoilt for choice. So get spoiling already. ■

AUSTRALIA
TRAVELING THE EAST COAST IN TRUE STYLE BRISBANE The Viva Girls were lucky enough to mix business with pleasure this February and toured Australia’s east coast in true Viva style! Not only did we stay in the best accommodation and eat at superb restaurants, we also got to experience some fantastic tours and really appreciate this diverse and beautiful country. It really is an amazing experience, and you can see why so many Brits visit Australia and return to the UK wanting to pack up all their belongings and head straight back to become part of the ‘Australian Dream’. The Aussie way of life is like no other, thanks to the glorious weather which means that most Australians spend the majority of their spare time outside in the sunshine, socialising with friends and family, and generally living more active and healthier lifestyles. Unfortunately, there has been quite a bit of bad press on Australia recently, which most of us will have heard about on the news - in particular, the devastating floods that hit Brisbane and its surrounding areas in mid January. This was a terrible natural disaster which couldn’t have been predicted and caused a substantial amount of damage, and even loss of life – but, just three weeks after the flood, it was great to hear from the locals how the country had pulled together as a team to get the area back up and running again. And just in time for our visit! We decided that Brisbane, in Southern Queensland, would >

be our first port of call. Although often overshadowed by Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane is a bustling and vibrant city in its own right and we couldn’t wait to enjoy it. After the ‘30 hour hell’ flight, you definitely need somewhere lavish and relaxing to stay. We opted for the multi awardwinning Marriot hotel, which is the epitome of five-star elegance, perfectly positioned overlooking the river between the vibrant hub of fortitude valley and the central business district. The Marriott is also just a few steps away from chic shopping, riverside dining and the cultural heart of Brisbane. Our room was fabulous – but then we would have expected nothing less from the presidential suite! (We know, you hate us!) With decor that oozes style and sophistication, this really is the ultimate place to chill out and unwind after a hectic day in the city. And while you’re kicking back, why not treat yourself to a relaxing massage at the Dome Retreat Spa? We certainly did, and we can highly recommend it! The staff were really lovely and very attentive, and there are loads of treatments to chose from - it’s the perfect way to relax, rejuvenate and re-organise your mind, body and soul, ready for your next adventure! And if, after all that pampering, you are feeling rather peckish but don’t really want to head back into the city ‘till later, then you should just head downstairs to the Petries Brassiere & Bar, where you can sit outside on the fantastic terrace and indulge in the sumptuous fresh seafood buffet, along with a cocktail or two!
There is so much to visit and see in Brisbane, you’re spoilt for choice - so much so that, now I’ve come to write it all down, I really don’t know where to start! Ok. So what can you expect from Brisbane? Well, it is pretty similar to Manchester in size, which we liked a lot as it means you can access most of the city on foot. And the shopping is amazing! When you plan your Brisbane trip, don’t forget to plan a visit to Australia’s largest open-air pedestrian mall, Queen Street Mall, with its 700+ speciality stores – including international fashion outlets, major department stores and flagship boutique stores. If you’re into arts, then you should explore Queensland’s cultural precinct, home to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, State Library and the Queensland Museum. If you are into your bands, you should head to Fortitude Valley, Australia’s first dedicated special entertainment precinct, where you can catch some of the best live music around. And as for tourist attractions, from river cruises to wildlife parks, as well as the many adventure and marine tours which all leave the city every day, you will be sure to find something to please in this fantastic city. COOLANGATTA Next we hit the beautiful beach resort of Coolangatta, located about 20 miles from Surfers Paradise. We stayed at the spectacular modern Reflection Tower Two complex. top (only the best for Viva!), the three bedroom penthouse had the most amazing panoramic views overlooking the beach, with Surfers Paradise in the distance. Absolutely breathtaking. The decor of the penthouse was the last word in luxury - all the mod cons, top quality finish, bright and spotlessly clean, with lots of space. The penthouse is split over three levels. The living area, with its fabulous spacious bedrooms, is on the bottom level, and the next two levels are both located outside - one with a gorgeous seating area from which to enjoy the amazing views, and the other with its own private plunge pool and barbeque area. We enjoyed most of our evenings in the latter two areas, relaxing with fine wine and sharing barbeques with our close Australian friends.
Penthouse Reflection Tower Two
If you don’t fancy barbeque, then Viva recommends you try the seafood at George’s Paragon Restaurant, situated under the hotel overlooking the beach, where you can enjoy some great tasting food sat on the terrace. We treated ourselves to the lobster and steak. The service? Excellent. The cuisine itself? Beautifully fresh and wholly delicious. If you’re looking for a great night out, then the famous cabaret show ‘Draculas’ is for you. This was by far one of the best nights we had in Australia - we hadn’t ever experienced anything like it before! The show includes a superbly entertaining cabaret show with a three course meal, all waited by vampires dressed up and acting the part. It might sound tacky, but we aren’t talking Vegas here – these were vampires in the classiest and most glamorous of goth costumes, beautifully made up and really living the performance. We were utterly mesmerised by the fabulous show – and terrified by the scary ghost train ride to the bar! ‘Draculas’, please come to England, we need you over here!
George’s Paragon Restaurant
There are so many tours and attractions you can experience in Collangatta. If you want to pack them all in, then its best to get a car, but you can also catch a lot of the main sights via the guided bus tours. We fancied checking out some wildlife while we were there, so we took a little trip to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. With its lush volcanic landscape, a world heritage rainforest and exotic rock pools, the scenery at this reserve is absolutely beautiful. The sanctuary is huge, and you can catch a minature railway to all the different areas of it, so you can see everything from wild birds to lots of different and dangerous reptiles, and not forgetting the kangaroos and koala bears! This reserve is a must-visit, and a great day out for the kids! HERVEY BAY This stylish and fun little town is often known as the jewel in Queensland’s crown, and is also referred to as the whale-watching capital of the world. The best time to visit Hervey Bay, if you want to see humpback whales, is from July to November, so unfortunately we missed this peak time due to the timing of our trup, but we will definitely >

go back in season next time to witness these beautiful marine mammals in their natural habitat. We stayed at the popular Peppers Pier resort, a very well known exclusive hotel chain with locations across both Australia and New Zealand. The Hervey Bay hotel is located opposite the famous pier on Urangan beach, which provides the perfect sanctuary to unwind and enjoy a seaside holiday. We stayed in the 3-bedroom penthouse, which was wonderfully spacious and beautifully decorated with warm, homely colours. The resort has everything you need for a perfect stay, with a large outdoor lagoon swimming pool situated in beautifully landscaped gardens, plus lots of comfy sun-loungers for when you just want to relax and catch some rays. There is also a fully kitted-out gym and a day spa to keep you looking your best and feeling refreshed. Our favourite part of our stay, however, was the huge private jacuzzi-style bath on the top decking of the penthouse, which we had tons of fun enjoying!
Bayswater Restaurant
Penthouse Peppers Pier Resort
Even though we had missed whale season, there were still lots of other marine animals to see in the wild. We spent the morning on board the Blue Dolphin, sailing across the deep blue Australian sea. Peter Lynch (owner-operator) has over 24 years experience with marine life - 14 years with Sea World, a summer season with the Australian Antarctic Division, and 10 years as a dolphin and whale-watch operator. His knowledge of marine life is very extensive and we had a really interesting and enjoyable time on his trip. Peter is a really interesting tour guide who is extremely enthusiastic and helpful (he didn’t mind answering all our many questions!), and you can tell that he is extremely passionate about his work. Penthouse Peppers Pier Resort
After all that sailing and sun-bathing, we had worked up a bit of an appetite and headed to The Bayswater restaurant, located next to Peppers Pier and a great place to grab some food, with a large deck for alfresco dining and a gorgeous view of the bay. We enjoyed some fabulous seafood and unique live entertainment – not for nothing is The Bayswater known by locals as one of the best venues in the area for a fantastic night out! BYRON BAY Last, but not least, came the final destination on our tour of east coast Australia – Byron Bay. We are in LOVE with this little town and already had fond memories of it from when we travelled Australia back in 2001, so we were very excited to return. We stayed at the award-winning resort Sunlight Splendour, a privately owned hotel hosted by the lovely and gorgeous Patricia Thomson, who will attend to your every holiday need with the highest standards of customer service excellence to ensure that you have the best time possible. Patricia’s Sunlight Splendour haven is oozing with attention to detail and it’s the little things that really make the difference, from ready made-up beach bags with towels, sun cream and hats, to hammocks to relax in on each balcony, to squeezey vegemite in your own little snack bar! The hotel is perfectly located in tranquil tropical gardens and surrounded by a state forest with rainforest streams and waterways, all of which makes for a really lovely 10 minute stroll to the very heart of Byron and its award-winning restaurants, cafes, world famous festivals and craft markets.
Main Beach Byron Bay
Byron has always been a super-cool night out and we were delighted to see that the town hasn’t changed much at all in the 10 years since we were last there. Our favourite place to enjoy a cold beer with fabulous views is the Beach Hotel, which is most definitely Byron’s most famous pub. With its relaxed atmosphere and sunny beer garden overlooking Main Beach, and with the addition of the excellent new restaurant Italian at Pacific, the pub’s location and great food is highly recommended - if you pass through without stopping off here for a drink or a bite to eat, then you haven’t experienced Byron at its best. If you want to experience Byron’s marine life up close and personal, then you can’t get any closer than booking a tour with Go Sea Kayak. You will experience paddling up close with dolphins, turtles, humpbacks (in season) and even sharks. Go Sea Kayak is one of only two companies who run this fantastic tour, which is a great way to see Byron’s famous lighthouse. An amazing experience- well, once you get past the break in the waves, anyway!

ater and ice are often overlooked as key ingredients in cocktails and mixed drinks. The quality of the ice and the characteristics of the water it is made from directly affects the dilution of a drink, and therefore the taste. Keep a bottle each of still and sparkling Willow water in your fridge ready for your next cocktail-making session and remember to keep a plentiful supply of Willow water ice cubes in your freezer! Bocce Ball
Method
If you are looking for a cocktail with a definite ‘wow’ factor then this comparatively new drink, named after a popular ball sport, could be exactly what you are looking for! Bocce is similar to French Boules or Petanque and shares an ancestry that dates back to the Roman Empire. It is widely enjoyed in countries as diverse as Australia, Venezuela and Brazil, having had its roots amongst the Italian migrant population before finding wider appeal.
Pour the amaretto, vodka and orange juice over ice into a large martini glass. Add a generous splash of sparkling Willow water. Garnish with a slice of orange.
Although there are many cocktails with a vodka and fresh juice base - the most famous arguably being the Screwdriver - the Bocce Ball combines the almond tones of Amaretto and the sharp citrus freshness of orange juice to produce a wonderfully sophisticated result that is altogether smoother and more refined. Finished with a splash of sparkling Willow water, this cocktail is perfect for enjoying on a warm summer’s day. www.willowwater.com

WE WELCOME BROWNS TO MANCHESTER...
T
here was a touch of Hollywood glamour when Browns opened the doors for their spectacular launch night champagne and cocktail party in Manchester. Nine hundred invited guests, including local businesses, trod the red carpet leading to the entrance of the former Athenaeum bar. Champagne corks popped and cocktail shakers rattled as guests were served complimentary drinks all evening in stunning surroundings. Head Chef Katy Dominique Henry and her kitchen team conjured up delicious canapés and nibbles, creating mini versions of their new menu, which included mini fish and chips wrapped in Browns logoed cones, and the officially recognised ‘Tequila Queen’ Cleo Rocos, President of The Tequila Society, served skinny cocktails to guests - her organic Tequila cocktail mixed with fresh lime juice proved a particular hit, even with those technically still trying to keep to their new year resolutions. Browns have chosen the magnificent city of Manchester as the location for the opening of their first bar and brasserie in eight years. Established in 1973, Browns is the essence of quality and excellence, with a reputation for classic food, well delivered in a stylish environment. They are renowned for providing the perfect setting for people to meet, eat, drink and socialise in a welcoming and unobtrusive atmosphere. People will appreciate the timeless style, simple elegance and classic simplicity that Browns is set to provide. Situated in the iconic, grade two listed building of the former Parrs Bank on York Street, the beautiful Edwardian baroque structure of the new venue is in a prime location in the heart of the business and retail district. Parrs Bank was renowned as one of Manchester’s most opulent banking halls, and this rich history still exudes charm and authority to this day. Built in 1902, it was designed by Charles Heathcote with unique art nouveau detailing, providing a breathtaking view set off by marble pillars and
red sandstone architecture. The building has been tastefully restored with considerable panache into a contemporary bar and brasserie with a spacious interior that is simply effortlessly impressive. ‘Now that we are open, I can say that this is the perfect place for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, or just somewhere to stop by for a pot of tea or a cocktail any time of the day. Whether it’s a special occasion or a regular post-shopping treat, there will always be something for everyone here at Browns,’ said Marco Ficini, General Manager. Serving classic dishes as well as more continental flavours, the food will be skilfully prepared and exquisitely executed to provide quality without being arrogant or fussy. ‘We have uncompromising standards and our chefs are the best in the business. We select the best fresh ingredients, tailored to the seasons, and prepare our dishes with great inspiration and lots of care,’ explains Head Chef, Katy Dominique Henry. The décor represents Edwardian confidence and elegance and the staff embody the same qualities. General Manager Marco Ficini explains, ‘Our friendly staff are the best of the best and the service will rival any top London restaurant. As well as serving you delicious food at Browns, our bar staff will prepare signature cocktails that will shake up your senses, or you can choose from the impressive menu of chilled continental beers, wine and champagne. We are very excited to finally be open, and I know Browns will be a city centre favourite for people who care about experiencing value and quality in a fantastic atmosphere.’ To find out more about this jewel in the heart of Manchester’s buzzing city centre visit www.brownsmanchester.co.uk. ■

The sky’s the limit as 102 Capital Fm launches in Manchester I
f you hadn’t heard already - and if you haven’t, where the hell have you been this year?! - Capital FM launched in Manchester at the beginning of 2011, and what better way to say ‘HELLO MANCHESTER, WE ARE HERE’, than with a good old classic launch party. The event took place at the swanky Cloud 23 Sky Bar at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester. An invited audience of regional business leaders, stars of the region’s hit soap operas and members of the local media celebrated the station’s new branding at a champagne reception, courtesy of Selfridges. Guests got to meet the 102 Capital FM team, including Capital Breakfast host, Rob Ellis, and voice of drive time, Sally Hudson. Chris Jones, Managing Director of 102 Capital FM, said: ‘January was an exciting month for us with the launch of the brand new 102 Capital FM, and it’s only going to get better throughout the rest of the year. We have a team who loves Manchester and who are dedicated to offering both our listeners and advertisers the best hit music and up-to-date local news, traffic and travel, brought to them by some of their favourite presenters from the area.’ So how was the launch party? Two words: AWE-SOME! (Ok, we know that’s really only one word but sometimes a party is so good you just gotta hyphenate!) Although, just for the future, guys, it maybe wasn’t such a great idea giving guests champagne bottles to drink with straws - it went straight to our heads! You can catch up with Rob Ellis and his breakfast show crew in each issue of Viva. Head to the live music section now to read the Rob Ellis show column. ■

The Professional Hairdresser Live 2011 ‘ Professional Hairdresser - Live’ had its unveiling at Manchester Central on 3rd April 2001. Organised by hairdressing magazine, Professional Hairdresser the event was the first of its kind.
Sofie West, Deputy Editor of the magazine, said: ‘We wanted to bring people a live version of the magazine, so we wanted lots of interaction with visitors, which is why we’ve had free seminars so they can come along and listen, and get up close and personal with hairdressing icons.’ Dominic Shannon, Marketing Manager at Hamerville Magazines, the organisers of the event added: ‘It’s the first time we’ve done it, but we deliberately wanted to do it in Manchester because everything happens in London for the industry and we wanted to be different. The hairdressing industry is really strong in the North West and all the exhibitors and fellowship have been supportive of doing something here.’ One of the world’s top hairdressers, Errol Douglas MBE, took out his scissors and cut the ribbon on the first day of the two-day event. Haircare brands were there to showcase their products, while the leading lights in the industry, such as last year’s London Hairdresser of the Year, Skyler McDonald, were on hand to give seminars to offer advice on the creative and business aspects of hairdressing to salon owners and staff. There was also the opportunity to see all aspects of a photo shoot in action with the award winning hairdresser, Desmond Murray, and hair and beauty photographer, Jack Eames.
Sofie said: ‘With the hairdressing industry it’s all about names and icons. Everyone is so passionate and it’s nice for visitors to get up close and listen to who’s inspired them and how they got there.’ The Fellowship Stage was where most of the action took place, and hairdressers from various brands and salons were on hand with presentations to inspire the visitors. Celebrity hairdresser and International Ambassador for the industry, Andrew Collinge, demonstrated his simple ‘2 Minute Up-Do’ to the onlookers. Meanwhile flamboyant Frenchman, Robert Masciave, created masterpieces with his ‘rock candy’ look. All three styles were simply breathtaking and oozed creativity, with their baby pink hairpieces and scorpion-style design. Visitors to the show were able to tame, tease or tousle their hair, and for those lacking in length, there were quite a few hair extension brands on hand too, with leading company Balmain exhibiting at the show. The show seemed to go down a storm and, as the visitors left clutching their bags full of products, the organisers seemed confident it would take place again next year. Dominic said: ‘We’ve had really good feedback from visitors and exhibitors beyond our expectation. It’s something we want to build on, so we’ll be back next year!’ ■

Flannels opens down The Avenue
N
ot only was Wednesday 6th April one of the hottest days of the year so far, it was also the official launch party of Flannels’ new store in Spinningfields. Once inside the wonderfully air-conditioned store, we were greeted by a table of Hey Little Cupcake’s finest chocolate and vanilla mini cupcakes, and a host of the most beautiful clothes ever seen in one place. Refreshing rum and champagne-based cocktails were on offer, as well as mini cheeseburgers and mini fish & chips for those who were feeling peckish, and the event also featured some good quality entertainment. The duo known as ‘Fetish and Manish’ were a very quirky twosome - she in a crown and a gorgeous pair of red Vivienne Westwood Mary-Jane’s, he in a sailoresque outfit – and hosted a very lively and upbeat set, including songs such as the old primary school classic ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ sung to the tune of Girls Aloud’s ‘Sound of the Underground’. The store itself is based at the end of The Avenue, opposite All Saints, with its floor-to-ceiling windows creating a really bright and spacious shopping space. As for the products on offer, Flannels sells D&G, Acne, Lanvin, Missoni, Marc Jacobs, Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, and many, many more. The ground floor hosts ladies ready-to-wear, accessories and footwear; as well as the Joseph concession, and the first floor is dedicated to menswear. Whilst walking round the shop, a lot of pieces caught my eye, however two items stood out the most: a pair of black bowed Lanvin flip-flops, and an absolutely to-diefor white Acne maxi dress, so wonderfully tailored it actually has a corset built into it (and, yes, I have dreamed about it since!) Overall, the evening was very enjoyable-the sun was shining outside, everyone was in good spirits, delicious food and drink were available, the atmosphere was relaxed, and I was surrounded by gorgeous designer clothing. Does it really get any better? ■ words: Hayley Ashworth

BEING A FESTIVAL VIP Can’t decide which festival to spend your money on this year? Here’s our run down of how to VIP it in true Viva glamping style.. Words: Carla Griscti
T
he festival season is fast approaching, and if you’re anything like me you will get a rush of excitement about the prospect of grabbing your Hunters, your rain jacket (ok, maybe my fur too) and rushing out of London as fast as your little legs can carry you. It’s a strange contradiction for a self confessed ‘girly’ girl to enjoy roughing it in a tent, going without a shower for a few days and walking around in a pair of wellies trying to avoid slipping over and falling face first in what can only be described as a mud bath! I’m a girl who relies on hot showers, a comfy bed and most importantly a pair of hair straighteners to make myself look and feel like I slightly resemble a human being! Being without these (dare I say it) female necessities when you’re immersed in the whole festival experience strangely allows you to
the production of many festivals today, the impulse of ‘dressing to impress’ has become an exhilarating part of the experience. In short, the array of outrageous outfits displayed at many festivals mean that the majority of us girls don’t have to feel embarrassed about wanting to make ourselves look good, and horror of all horrors, wanting to be clean!
leave these inhibitions and image hang-ups behind, so you can let yourself go and cultivate a less pristine and somewhat more eccentric version of yourself. After all, there really is nothing comparable to standing in a field watching your favourite band rocking out on stage, aware that you are part of the whole experience.
as you could get, the modern festival phenomenon has evolved into an even more decadent affair. With an abundance of boutique camping on offer, why would anyone choose differently? Boutique facilities range from the convenience of readily set up tents, electricity points (for phone chargers and perhaps the odd cheeky hair pampering session) breakfast (or any other item you desire) delivered to your tent, private champagne bars and romantic cosy wooden cabins, to luxurious spacious campers and bohemian yurts shrouded with intricately woven Mongolian textiles. A double bed (or any bed for that matter) at a festival would be a huge selling point for me, and indeed a priceless one. No wonder then that VIP and boutique camping has hit UK festivals by storm.
So many more festivals are marketing themselves with avant-garde themes nowadays, amidst a labyrinth of outrageous fancy dress, culminating in a combination of hedonism and childhood fantasy. Festivals are no longer about getting stoned in a field surrounded by hippies, not washing for days and generally looking a bit worse for wear. With the effort that goes into
Festivals are a chance to escape the normality of everyday life and revert back to childhood instincts where we can enter the realms of make-believe and experience the fantastical. Festival fluffiness is what it’s all about. This fluffiness, like wine and cheese, requires an accompaniment of sophistication, glamour and a hint of pure indulgence. Whilst in the sixties being a back-stage Stones groupie was as extravagant
Boutique camping creates a unique festival experience that will keep you festival hopping time and time again. If anything, it at least solves the problem of leaking tents (if you opt for the plush Winnebagos of course) and being separated from a bunch of tone-deaf guitar playing teenagers who insist on being the next Bob Dylan at five in the morning (yawn). Taking into account the music, the atmosphere and the elaborate camping facilities on offer, here is a countdown of the best UK festivals of the summer. Glastonbury 22nd-26th June My first Glastonbury experience was when I was sixteen years old and now more than ten years later (Eep! where does the time go?!) it still never ceases to amaze. With awesome line-ups, this festival is time-
less and always at the top of my list. With legendary artists such as Prince, Coldplay, U2 and Beyonce rumoured to play this year, Glastonbury offers a multitude of musical genres from notorious rock & roll idols, to underground electro and even Somerset Folk music! There is something for everyone, and ultimately that is what Glastonbury is all about. From family picnics to hardcore raving, it offers everything from both ends of the spectrum. The best bits: The Pyramid stage will ultimately provide the highlight of the weekend for some, as the main headliners will undoubtedly give memorable performances there, but there are a variety of alternative areas at Glastonbury that offer totally >
VIVA f e a t u r e unique and extraordinary experiences. Each area has its own individual character - the spirituality of the Stone Circle, the chaotic pyrotechnics and massive dj sets of Arcadia, and the surreal stage creations of Shangri-La. My personal favourite from last year was the Park area, offering some great underground music sets, amazing art installations, and topping it off with ‘The Rabbit Hole’, an underground secret tunnel of psychedelic fantasy. A definite must! Boutique bundles: A plethora of boutique camping is available at Glastonbury, ranging from gypsy caravans in the Tangerine Fields and tipis in the Pennard Orchard, to apartments and cottages with private pools and spa facilities. You can literally get whatever you want. Not quite being able to afford the £5000 for a luxurious four-poster-bedded yurt, we opted for Mark’s Bar at Windinglake Farm. With hot showers, spacious rooms and a quiet location, plus a shuttlebus service, freshly cooked local food, and a fully loaded bar, we had everything we needed. Passes into Winding Lake are £225 a person. Prices range from £250 for a tent space, to £5,000 for a luxury trailer - a wee bit pricey but well worth the expense. Secret Garden Party 21st-24th July One of my favourite festivals, and the chance to immerse yourself in ultimate childhood fantasy. A hedonistic, indulgent and wholly unique experience you will never forget. With an assortment of dj’s, indie-dance and laid back acoustic sets on offer, this year’s sets will include dance legends Leftfield, 80’s icon Blondie, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, indie kids Mystery Jets and the unique indie-electro sound of Alex Metric. With incredible stage production and elaborate fancy dress themes, this festival is truly one of a kind. The best bits: The Pagdoda - a dance floor jetty floating on a neon-lit lake, with a beautifully scenic
backdrop overlooking the entire garden. An electric atmosphere, amazing dj sets with a background sunset to ensure a wave of euphoria. And of course, a lake wouldn’t be complete without a jaunty boat trip. There is always a huge installation in the middle of the lake, which, as a traditional ritual, is set alight on the Saturday night. Last year saw a large ship engulfed in a fury of flames and fireworks. In truth, the best bit of the festival is the frivolous atmosphere and the feeling of belonging. The Secret Garden Party has a real sense of community that few other festivals (that I’ve been to, at least) seem able to recreate. Boutique bundles: Having stayed in the Boutique area at this festival last year, I can definitely recommend this as an absolute festival must! £40 for a boutique wristband secures your own entrance to the festival site, private car park, bellboys, luxury toilets and showers, and a boutique sanctuary offering massages and facials. Luxury accommodation includes tipis sleeping up to six people (starting at £900), Blue Bell tents with double mattresses and linen (priced at £550), wooden Kabins & Kocoons (starting at £450), standard yurts (priced at £750, sleeping four) and luxury yurts beautifully decorated with carpets, wall hangings, mirrors, double beds and lanterns (priced at
£1,200), with any one of these options providing a perfect sumptuous retreat. For more info, please visit: www.secretgardenparty.com Bestival 8th-11th September As a Bestival virgin, I can’t quite contain my excitement about the prospect of going this year! With my two favourite bands, the Cure and Primal Scream both hitting the stage I will be all over that bad boy like a rash! Another fancy-dress themed festival (my favourite kind), Bestival hits its climax with a huge carnival precession on the Sunday, show-casing an array of crazed outfits. Previous years saw ‘Under the Sea’, ‘Fantasy’ and ‘Pirate’ themes, but this year the festival will be paying tribute to ‘Rock Stars, Pop Stars
VIVA 79
& Divas’. A perfect opportunity to demonstrate my impeccable Kate Bush moves! Best bits: Despite the expansion year after year, Bestival maintains its boutique mentality. Although it has grown into a larger festival, you can still bump into your friends around the corner, and even with its now massive line-ups Bestival still upholds its quirky vibe, creating a vibrant and refreshing experience for all. The Bollywood bar offers the best festie cocktails, eclectic dj sets and a lavish interior of chandeliers, beds and silk umbrellas. The fancy-dress parade finale is a spectacle not to be missed. For an unconventional and spontaneous twist to the weekend, there is even a chapel where you can get hitched or renew your vows, as my lovely friends did last year. And don’t forget to check out the Arcadia stage to catch some quite literally electric performances with incredible special effects. Boutique bundles: Bestival offers several different sections of boutique camping with a choice of readypitched and fully equipped tents, starting from £125. You can also opt for the quaint and cosy Podpads. I say cosy quite literally - if you are small, these tiny little solar-powered wooden huts, with either twin or
double beds (priced at £425), are ideal! Tipis sleeping up to 4 people are also available and are priced at £420 (extra furnishings are available at an additional cost). There is also an array of yurts, squrts and cloudhouses to choose from, perfect for a woodland fairytale retreat. Cosily furnished with beds, cushions, sheepskin rugs, tables and lanterns, prices for these start from £325. Each area has its own flushable toilets and Posh Wash hot showers. For more info, please visit www.bestival.net T in The Park 8th-10th July An awesome line-up this year includes rock gods (and my long standing crush!) Foo Fighters, with Arctic Monkeys and Coldplay also set to headline, fused >
VIVA f e a t u r e with a mixture of indie and pop idols including Blondie, Pulp, Ocean Colour Scene, Friendly Fires, Brandon Flowers and Jessie J. An eclectic range of dance and hip hop acts also set to play include Leftfield, Swedish House Mafia, 2 Many Djs, Plan B, The Streets, Tiny Tempah & House of Pain. The best bits: Steering away from the decadence of the less mainstream festivals, T in The Park is all about the music. With ten stages offering incredible live performances and masses of bars around every corner, this is your ultimate no-frills music festival. Fancy dress Friday displays some rather comical outfits, and the fairground is a chance to indulge in some good old-fashioned tomfoolery. For a healthy alternative to burgers and beers, get yourselves down to the Healthy T Round Up which offers healthy food, free water and massage. Boutique bundles: The Residence is a luxury festival accommodation centre located at the back of the T in The Park campsite, with its own dedicated entrance and secret passage to the main festival site. Complete with a private bar, Porta-Showers, Festival Recovery Spa, and beauty room including hairdryers, straighteners and mirrors, the Residence offers a range of
indie rockers Kasabian. The best bits: Renowned for its undeniably British atmosphere, the Isle of White festival is unpretentious and full of young families and grinning teenagers, all there to bathe in the unadulterated rock soundtrack provided by some of the biggest and best-loved names in music. Boutique bundles: This festival only offers a small range of boutique facilities, not as quite lavish as others, but practical, comfortable and affordable nonetheless. A small range of Podpads, readily erected tents and tipis are available (ranging from between £150 - £900). For more info, please visit: www.isleofwightfestival.com Reading and Leeds 26-28th August The Reading and Leeds festival prides itself on providing music fans with the best in rock and alternative music and always attracts a lively and primarily youthful crowd. Last year, Arcade Fire, Blink 182 and Guns N Roses headlined the event. This year’s headliners will be announced just before tickets are released on the 21st March. Muse and The Strokes are rumoured to be topping the bill, and supporting acts such as
services (priced from £375). For more info, please visit: www.leedsfestival.com V Festival 20th-21st August If you are a festival virgin who isn’t quite ready to rough it in a field in the middle of nowhere, then V Festival will be right up your street. With one event situated in Essex - less than an hour from London - many have the chance to experience some great music and still manage to hop on the last train back to the Smoke. The same line-up is on offer at the Stafford festival, only thirty minutes from Birmingham. This is a much more commercial festival offering an assortment of music, which this year includes Eminem, Rhianna, Arctic Monkeys, Dizzee Rascal, Ellie Goulding and 80’s shoulder-pad-wearing legends Duran Duran. The best bits: Busy and fun-filled crowds with lots of drinking and always a wide range of music with something to suit everyone’s tastes. If you’re lucky enough to have a VIP wristband, check out the legendary louder lounge, an exclusive VIP area with champagne cocktails, rocking dj sets, free bars and all-day BBQs. The Isle of Wight line up never fails to disappoint - one of the first festivals of the season, it really kick-starts the exuberance of the summer. A colossal line-up is set to wow the crowds this year with the awesome Foo Fighters, Tennessee quartet Kings of Leon and Brit
Elbow, Deftones, Pulp, Interpol and The Offspring may also make an appearance. The best bits: Another great, no-frills festival which is all about the massive live sets. VIVA l i v e m u s i c The Rob Ellis Show Weekdays 6-10 am Its been a busy three months for us since launching the newest sound to Manchester, Capital FM. We held our launch party at The Hilton on Deansgate and had all the movers and shakers in Manchester down to christen the station in style! So what’s been going on? Manchester has once again come out on top as THE best city to see live music, and its no surprise when top artists like Tinie Tempah, The Saturdays, Bruno Mars and McFly, are all selling out venues across the city. We manage to sneak back stage and on various tour buses with everyone that visits Manchester, so if you want to see and hear more of who’s passing through then check out the breakfast show page on Capitalfm.com. There’s some funny videos on there too, of when we get celebs to blow up a balloon until it pops!
Beady Eye (who have just played 2 sold out nights at The O2 Apollo) and Pulp all headlining events this summer. A bit closer to home, the Hungry Pigeon Festival in The Northern Quarter takes a break this year as it has ‘outgrown its success’, but there’s something more indoorsy at the Southport Weekender on May 6th. Meanwhile, the live venues remain busy with Kylie taking over the MEN for 4 nights back in April and Swedish House Mafia and Olly Murrs at The O2 Apollo at the end of May. Manchester is also gearing itself up for Manchester Day on 19th June. So there’s a bit of everything for everyone -whatever floats your float.
‘Manchester has once again come out on top as THE best city to see live music’
There’s still more live stuff to come too, as summer starts and the festival lineup rumour mill begins to take shape. Leeds and Reading have Muse (who played Old Trafford not too long ago),
The weather is beginning to show a bit of promise! As the temperature rises, Castlefield will be buzzing, the eye candy will be on show, and we’ll still be getting up at 4.30am to play you some tunes and chat about stuff in-between… The Rob Ellis Show
In late 2010, with Christmas fast approaching and snow covering the streets of Manchester, five lads shelter in the dingy warmth of the former Manchester Radio Online HQ to plan the launch of their exciting new project: Seeing Hester. Having formed from the ashes of past Manchester bands, the band have been running this little project in the background since the start of 2010, ready to hit the music scene hard in the New Year. So, in early April… where are the boys up to? Well, for a start, members Mark and Little Boone have been busy launching the Chorlton branch of their successful live music night ‘Scruff of the Neck’, now well established and host to a massive musical buzz and countless Manchester musicians. February saw the band take to the stage themselves for a blistering performance of high-energy, sing-along indie that had the tiny venue, ‘My Place’, packed to the rafters, with crowd members frequently being hurled into the ceilings amidst all the crowd surfing. On top of this, the boys have set up a string of gigs both locally and further afield. They have slots lined up playing exciting new Deansgate-based festival ‘Beached’ in May, as well as local annual events such as ‘Chorlton Arts Festival’ and ‘Beech Road Festival’ later this summer. This is all before heading off to hit Sheffield, Leeds and London in July and August. What’s more, following the set-up of independent record label ‘Scruff of the Neck Records’ in October last year, Seeing Hester have been announced as the next band to do a release under the brand, with a launch party set for 14th May as part of the regular night at My Place in Chorlton. ‘We’re all really excited about the band and the launch,’ said lead singer, Little Boone, ‘We’ve been planning it for a while and have timed it so that we can jump head-first into a string of gigs afterwards. We’ve all worked hard in other bands for years, but this time we feel we’ve got the mix spot-on, and we’re massively geared up to work harder than we’ve ever done before to make sure our music is heard.’

VIVA 88
And why wouldn’t they be excited? With memorable tunes, more than 30 years gigging experience between the five of them and an average age of 23, these boys are sure to dominate the Manchester music scene before the summer ends. Add to this their enthusiasm, passion, and fresh approach to reaching their ultimate goal of a major record deal, and you will see why we at Viva are firm believers that Seeing Hester are set for BIG things. ■

Kylie: Queen of the night... T
he weekend of April 1st brought Manchester to the height of Kylie madness as the queen of pop herself was in town for four days with her Aphrodite World Tour, along with support act The Ultra Girls. Kylie herself had chosen the sassy four piece act, The Ultra Girls, to head out on the road with her, and they have the distinction of being the first tour support Kylie has had in over seven years. The show started off with The Ultra Girls getting the M.E.N crowd all fired up for Kylie by rocking it up with new hit ‘Girls will be Girls’ and a genius mash-up version of Blur’s ‘Song 2’ and Pink’s ‘Get The party Started’.
photo: Steven Cox
The main stage was then transformed into a giant colosseum, as the lights went down, water images and dancers filled the stage, then Kylie herself popped up dressed as Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, flanked by her army of muscular (and extremely sexy!) gladiators. Now, you couldn’t really have one of the greatest pop show tours around and NOT fly across
VIVA 83
the M.E.N arena on a male angel, could you? YES, this is exactly what Kylie did, right before launching into the old classic - ‘I Should Be So Lucky’. Amazing. If you were lucky enough (as we were) to be in the ‘Splash Zone’ area, you would have noticed Kylie whisper to her dancers half way through the show ‘I’m really hot!’ - yes, I bet you were, naughty Kylie, with all those fit dancers around you! And they didn’t call it the ‘Splash Zone’ for nothing - the M.E.N provided us with poncho macs, which was a delightful (and much appreciated!) gesture as the show finished with a massive display of spectacular water works. We must confess, we were not massive Kylie fans before the show, and, of course, the Aussie star is not necessarily everyone’s taste, but after her fantastic performance at the M.E.N, we have been converted! Kylie, you truly are THE No.1 show girl! ■

PLAYING ON THE VIVA IPOD...
FRIENDLY FIRES - PALA. The eagerly anticipated return of Friendly Fires has finally come. The trio’s second album ‘Pala’ is named after Aldous Huxley’s novel based on the doomed utopia island fuelled by educational drug use, parrots squawking positive slogans and tantric sex. Luckily ‘Live those Days Tonight’ gave something for us to nibble on and was also a chance to preview what was to come. The boys did not disappoint and will provide us with more unstoppable body shaking at this summers’ festivals. Confirmed for Glastonbury and many more stages this summer, Ed Macfarlane’s signature jittering dance moves have developed into a subtler, classier sound, but make no mistake, this new finesse can still bring life to the party.
JAMIE WOON - MIRROR WRITING. Another Brit school alumnus pops up following the success of Amy Winehouse, Adele, Leona Lewis,The Feeling (the list can go on)... Woon possesses a folk quality coupled with real melodic skill. His debut album, ‘Mirror Writing’ has been three years in the making, and has clearly been lovingly crafted. Well, Woon, we are officially swooned, this relaxing album has moments of understated yet outstanding beauty, as well as sparks of pure dance-ability - what more could you want from an album? Out Now.
ARCTIC MONKEYS SUCK IT & SEE. ‘Suck It and See’ is the Arctic Monkeys’ fourth album and is due out this June. The drummer agrees that some could think its a bit of a naughty title for the album, but it is after all a typical British saying - doubtless, people worldwide are bound to interpret it in different ways, but this is something which the Artic Monkeys clearly find amusing. Recorded in California, the boys claim the album hasn’t deviated from their true Sheffield lyrical swagger, which I think is true - after all, stamping a thoroughly British saying on the album cover makes a pretty clear statement as to where the band’s true inspirations lie. ‘Dont Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’ is the first glimpse of what is set to be another great album for this band.
CAGE THE ELEPHANT - THANK YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Back in 2008, a little band from Kentucky packed a punch with us Brits. Cage the Elephant’s debut album was full of charm, and their new album, ‘Thank You, Happy Birthday’, is just as winning, although the songs themselves are perhaps not as strong. The roots of the band mean that plain old rock is in the lifeblood of every track. ‘Thank You, Happy Birthday’ peaks well at the beginning with the excellent ‘Shake Me Down’, but by half way through ‘2024’ we are slightly let down with what could have potentially been a great album for the band. But, as with all young creatives, the band are still finding their feet and will soon find their ‘sound’. After all, Kings of Leon had two albums and a three year wait until they erupted onto the scene for good and became a household name. KATY B - ON A MISSION The fresh-faced girl out of Peckham has been given the stamp of approval with this album, which is packed full of instantly likeable songs. Although she has been criticised for commercialising the dubstep genre and bringing it to the masses, her integrity as an artist has remained intact. This is an artist who has seized the middle ground between the likes of commericial radio played Lily Allen and Jessie J, and true soulful lyrics mixing underground dubstep beats with catchy pop hooks. Katy B is here to stay, thanks to her well-executed lyrics on ‘On A Mission’, ‘Broken Record’ and ‘Lights On’, featuring the return of Ms Dynamite, although, in our opinion, the monotonous thank you speech at the end of ‘Hard to Get’, should have been saved for the sleeve of the CD. Out Now.
VIVA 84
THE ULTRA GIRLS GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS. Straight off the tour bus from supporting Kylie Minogue on her Aphrodite: Les Folies tour, it’s the Ultra Girls with their new single ‘Girls will be girls’. The four girls caught the eye of Kylie and have the distinction of being the pop star’s first support act in seven years. The single ‘Girls will be Girls’ is pleasant but isn’t breaking new ground in the world of pop. But, with a fine team supporting the group - the same team who were behind Girls Aloud, Kylie, Britney and Lady Gaga’s success - the album could be promising, so keep your eye out for it. Until then ‘Girls will be Girls’ isn’t bad for a bit of background music. Album due out Autumn 2011.

NOT ABOUT
ACTING
IT’S ABOUT
DOING EMMA REPORTS....
I have now finished the DNA’s ‘Building Blocks’ course and have progressed on to the next level, ‘Acting for stage and screen’. This course aims to provide me with the necessary tools to enhance my ability and help provide a platform for my continued development as an actress.
they are playing. Mind-boggling, I hear you say! And, yes, at first it was a really weird concept for me, but I think I am slowly getting my head round it. For me, the turning point came when I realised it’s all about being real and believable in your performance - after all, how can your reaction look real if it’s not how you would really react?
So what have I learnt so far? Well, from day one my basic perceptions of what ‘acting’ is were challenged. I think I always thought of ‘acting’ as ‘pretending’ to be a character and acting as that person. But a good actor does not ‘act’ like
For me, the hardest part of my Monday night acting classes is concentrating and not thinking about my life outside the classroom, but instead believing in and living the scene that I’m about to act. Chris, our tutor for the ‘Building Blocks’ course, has shown and taught us different techniques to overcome this, including relaxation and concentration exercises to train our minds to be ‘in the zone’.
As you may have guessed from previous entries, these acting lessons are not about acting, they’re about regular Emma updates. Not that I’m egotistical or anything, but it kinda comes with the territory, dah-ling (mwa mwa). All joking aside though, learning the skills required to act has been one of the most challenging experiences I have come across in a long time, and is proving to be a lot more difficult than I anticipated - but, at the same time, it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
As a group, I feel that myself and my fellow actors have really gelled. There were obvious nerves at the beginning of the course, but as we have progressed together I can definitely see the improvement in all of us, and we all seem a lot more confident in our performances as a result.
that - they play the part as they would if they found themselves in that particular situation in real life, putting themselves and their reactions into the shoes of the character
A few of us even had our first practical experience of acting recently on a professional industry standard filmset for a film called ‘Bump’, which will be showcased at various film festivals throughout the summer. Although we were only extras in the film, it was really exciting to be on an actual filmset and see first-hand how it all works. I’ve definitely got the acting bug now and I just can’t wait to see where this course is going to lead me next! ■

Sex, Drugs & Arturo Preview Renowned southern photographer Will Wilkinson brings Sex, Drugs & Arturo to Manchester Photographic Gallery...
‘
SEX, DRUGS and ARTURO’ – the exhibition from the legendary photographer, Will Wilkinson – was unveiled at the Manchester Photographic Gallery on March 27th, with the opening night party hosted by Viva Magazine. Manchester’s elite gathered for canapés, drinks and great music from XFM’s own Gareth Brooks, whilst taking in the striking photography, featuring and inspired by artist Arturo Rhodes. Viva was lucky enough to catch up with both Will and Arturo for a few words during the event…
Q&A WILL WILKINSON photos: Karin Albinsson
VIVA: So what is the exhibition all about?
WW: The exhibition is all about an artist I met in Mallorca up in the Tramuntana Mountains, Arturo, who is himself an artist and a very eccentric character. The images themselves were shot in the mountains also. VIVA: How did the project all come together? WW: After spending two years with one another, I decided to begin photographing Arturo and talking to him about his life. After gaining one another’s confidence, we began to talk about what he’s done, the paintings he has created, and his generally crazy life… The end result is an exhibition for which he is the subject, which includes both photographs and poetry. VIVA: So what is the essence of the >
exhibition? What should those who come and see it take away from it? WW: The exhibition should really bring about a feeling of Arturo’s life, who he is, who he was and what he loves. Apart from that, it’s really a story about his life and love of Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll… VIVA: Why did you choose to bring the exhibition to Manchester? WW: I had this exhibition in London previously and it went down very well. Manchester is a great place, and an extremely happening area, so with the help of Viva Manchester magazine and gallery owner Andrew, I have managed to bring it up here and promote it to the public. I am a huge fan of Manchester and, in turn, I hope that those who come to see the exhibition here will leave as huge fans of ‘Sex, Drugs and Arturo’…
Q&A ARTURO RHODES VIVA: How did you come to get involved with this project? AR: Well, Will Wilkinson lives real close to me on Deia in Mallorca, the East Coast, he bought an apartment literally a stone’s throw away from my house. I had been in Deia since 1980 – I only meant to visit for a weekend, but I have not wanted to leave this place or a life on the beach ever since. So this is where I met Will and our friendship has grown ever since, which is where this exhibition stemmed from. VIVA: Is this the first time a project has been done on you? AR: No, not at all. There have been short movies and other projects over the years… Sex, Drugs and Arturo differs in that the project came from male bonding types of conversations. In the hot Deia weather where we were shooting in the breeze, Will would record many of our conversations, which went on to become inspiration for the art work. Sometimes the work would inspire me to paint or Will to make more photographs; work was created through what happened within our conversations.
VIVA: Are you still living the Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll lifestyle? AR: I think, you know, you can’t do any better than to say the truth, and for sure, back when I was your age I was doing drugs like everyone else. To be truthful, right now, I’m not doing drugs. I still like Rock and Roll though… VIVA: Do you have a favourite photo from the exhibition? AR: I love the photo Will took of me wearing a Napoleon hat. The Napoleon hat was actually made of corrugated cardboard and paper-mâché. I did a picture of Napoleon and then waltzed around my village dressed as him to make a fuss with a sword and everything… It was great, and I think that the photograph that came out of it was brilliant. VIVA: What have you got in store for the future? AR: I have many projects lined up for the future, and also have many interests that I try and stay active in. These include political change, climate change and things related to Mother Earth. Many things are important to me. I have a few other projects coming up that I myself am working on to do with nature, Gaia principles and the steady decline of the world around us.
T
he event itself was both chic and quirky, with a speech from Wilkinson, a poetry reading from Arturo and a specially written rap from Orange Live & Unsigned winners Ghoodfellas. In addition to this, there was also a fantastic guest appearance from ‘Mr. Nice’ Howard Marks, who said a few words to open the event, and caught up with Viva outside for a quick exclusive chat.
Q&A HOWARD MARKS VIVA: So What do you make of the exhibition so far? HM: The exhibition is fantastic. I loved the poetry reading from Arturo; I’ve not heard his work before today. VIVA: How did you meet Arturo? HM: I met Arturo around five years ago in Deia, and he has always been a man who has interested me. VIVA: Do you have a favourite piece? HM: I’ve not managed to catch the entire exhibition yet, however a piece >

that in my own head I’ve renamed Strawberry Skies Forever (ed: you’ll know the one!) is my favourite so far. VIVA: Have you got anything lined up for the future? HM: Plenty. I have a new book coming out, for one. It’s a bit of a ‘whodunnit’… a battle between me and whoever decides to read it! THE AFTER-PARTY Marks then went on to enjoy the rest of the event with his son, and, as afternoon turned to evening, the crowd got ready to move on to the after party at the Northern Quarter’s Crown and Anchor. Ghoodfellaz warmed up the crowd, followed by local bands Little Volcanoes and Seeing Hester, all to fantastic receptions. DJ Andy Hunt kept the music spinning long into the night, which turned into an after-after party at The Light Boutique Hotel, where hot tub shenanigans went on until sunrise… All in all, an eventful Sunday! And, despite the inevitably sore heads on Monday, it was a fabulous event for all. Sex, Drugs & Arturo was showcased at Manchester Photographic Gallery through out April. If you missed it and would like some information about the exhibition and how to order prints please contact Andy at Manchester Photographic Gallery on 0161 236 2446. 3 Insidious - April 29
I
f I tell you that this film is from the makers of ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Saw’, you can pretty much guess the rest. Insidious is a modern day ‘Poltergeist’, focusing on a family affected by their young son whose spirit escapes his body when he is put into a coma in a household accident. The film has a metronomic pace, which is a theme of the movie, but sometimes is its own downfall as it plods along. Not much originality, but if you enjoy a horror movie, you’ll get a few jumps out of this one.
1
Priest - May 13
S
taring Paul Bettany (DaVinci Code, Gangster No.1) as a priest in a post-apocalyptic alternate world where an on-going battle between man and vampire rages. A small group of highly combative priests carry the fight and have the complete faith of the human masses, and appear to have won the battle, but when Priest’s (Bettany) niece is kidnapped the reality of the situation is unearthed as he goes on a renegade mission to rescue her. An all-action horror thriller with lots of ‘Blade’ style sequences on a large scale. Christopher Plummer plays the sinister leader of the priest army and the cast is very strong all round. Bettany’s role is more superficial that those he usually takes, as he is an actor who enjoys deeply challenging psychological roles, but his performance is honest and full of the usual integrity. A rip-roaring, fast paced fireworks display of a movie which reflects the influence of debut director Scott Charles Stewart, who has an impressive CV in the area of visual effects, having worked on projects including ‘Sin City’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Superman Returns’. And if you’re looking for eye-candy, Cad Gigandet and Maggie Q also star.
4 World Of The DeadThe Zombie Diaries 2 - May 6
A
fter ‘28 Weeks Later’ damaged the UK zombie movie’s reputation and ‘Shaun of the Dead’ gave us a good chuckle, it’s about time for another serious zombie film. The premise is a post-apocalyptic UK, where most of the country is now zombified (which, I imagine, is like being on the tube in London, except you eat flesh too). A small pocket of unaffected people are hiding together and fighting to survive until they receive news of potential salvation in Europe, and begin a perilous journey toward it.

XMen First Class - June 3
ne of my many guilty pleasures as an adult is watching the original cartoon series of this fantastic comic book creation. I have always been fascinated by the idea of ‘mutants’ having super-powers and how it would effect them and the ‘normal’ people that surround them. This film is a prequel to the four movies we have had thus far, and focuses on a young Professor X (James McAvoy) when he was just Charles Xavier. We are given an insight into the friendship he had with Eric Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) who later becomes ‘Magneto’. Anyone who is a bit of a geek like me will be aware that the sworn enemies that Charles and Eric became began as a close bond, ultimately destroyed by a clash in ethos. Here, McAvoy and Fassbender really nail the sense of that deterioration and the way in which it damages both of them. Set in JFK’s America, a time of racial and political unrest, the film captures a strong sense of that tension, and it creates a solid backdrop to the battle that the mutants get involved in. The film-makers have done us comic strip fans proud, and look out for Nicholas Hoult (‘About a Boy’, ‘Skins’) as ‘Beast’
K
Something Borrowed - May 6
ate Hudson stars in this romantic drama about a couple who never pursued their teenage crush and now, at a completely inopportune time, reveal their true feelings for one another. This is a playful and light-hearted movie that will get your partner snuggling up to you. It’s warm, occasionally funny and generally entertaining. The delightful Miss Hudson continues the traditions set out by her mother (Goldie Hawn), being sweet, charming and amusing, but perhaps with a touch more integrity.

The Way Back - May 9
f you’re a fan of epics, do take this movie in. Colin Farrell and Ed Harris star in this tale, based on a true story (or, arguably, a number of true stories rolled into one), which charts the escape of seven prisoners from a Russian prison. They journey across some of the most horrendous terrain to make their escape, and director Peter Weir (‘Master and Commander’, ‘ The Trueman Show’) has really created a feel for the film by capturing the landscape in a fantastically visual way.

n all-star cast provide the voices for this spin on Shakespeare’s classic. Set in a garden on Verona Drive, there is a battle raging between the Reds and the Blues (I’m a Red all the way!). All the key characters are there, but in a fun, playful form (for example, I doubt very much that Shakespeare ever visualised his most famous work being performed by a flamingo desperate for love and a frog who can’t stay calm). A good fun family film with a few good chuckles along the way.

here is very little that hasn’t been written about this film. I went to see it on its day of release at the Vue cinema on Salford Quays. I was thoroughly entertained and consumed in this touching tale, but when asked by a friend what it was about, my description of the plot was quite uninspiring. Who really wants to see a movie about a man who has a severe speech impediment, a dysfunctional family, a bullying father and too much responsibility? Couple that with the fact that this was about the British Royal family, and some people were immediately put off. So, instead, I’ll describe the film as the story of one man striving to overcome crippling personal problems and succeeding in a battle that would allow him to motivate and inspire a whole nation at a crucial and dangerous time. After seeing this film, I left the cinema with the same feeling I had after watching ‘Rocky’ – if you’ve seen Rocky, you know what that feeling is. If you haven’t seen this film, get the DVD, it’s worth every penny!

or those of you that are not familiar with the Scottish vernacular, a ‘Ned’ is the equivalent of a ‘Scally’. This hard-hitting Brit-flick focuses on a young man, who has gone from being a successful, well-adjusted and promising student, to a violent, troubled teenager. The real battle begins when he tries to turn his life around for the better - his recent past is not so keen to let him walk away. The strong accents can be difficult, but this film is worth persevering with.

or all the negative publicity method actors get, when they produce a top performance, it can really blow you away. Christian Bale has not been far from controversy during his career, and who can forget his explosive rant on the set of ‘Terminator Salvation’, but when he is good he is awesome, and in this film, his work is akin to the quality he achieved on ‘The Machinist’. Bale plays the drug-addicted older brother of an aspiring but failing boxer. His character has a history in the fight game himself, and hangs on to the memory of what he nearly had. This film is a touching and emotive exploration of family and how they can have a negative impact on your ability to fulfil your ambitions and follow your desires. Ultimately, the key protagonist Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) is forced to choose between his family and his determination to succeed. Well choreographed and shot fight sequences, and an excellent cast and script, make this a very good watch. This is one of Hollywood’s lower budget movies at an estimated $25 million, but stands as a great example of what can be produced with all the right ingredients, and is predicted to have grossed in excess of $100 million thus far.

Shark finning is one of the most brutal and inhumane trades to plague the fishing world and yet it continues today. We talk to environmentalist group The Shark Trust about the full extent of the problem and what’s being done to prevent it. Words: Simon Bland

hen you think of sharks, what’s the first thought to enter your mind? Blind terror, sharp teeth, that foreboding ‘Jaws’ theme? Actually, the reality surrounding these apex ocean predators couldn’t be further from all the movie misconceptions. The under-publicised truth is: it’s us who do most of the butchering. Funnily enough, there’s no Hollywood movie about that. Each year, around 70 million sharks are dragged onto fishing vessels, stripped of their fins and thrown back into the ocean, in most cases still alive. This excessive and inhumane treatment is all in the name of food – shark fin soup - a delicacy once reserved for Oriental royalty and now considered a luxury dish at Chinese restaurants, weddings and New Years celebrations. Finning is oblivious to age, size and shark species and for the most part is largely un-policed. Not only is it wasteful (fins constitute only around 14% of a shark’s body, the remaining 86% goes unused) but it’s also a food source that won’t really do you much good. Like dolphin meat, which is harvested in a similarly brutal fashion, it contains dangerously high levels of mercury that if consumed in excess can affect the immune system and lead to birth defects.
It’s a grizzly tradition that continues for one reason and one reason only: money. On average, one pound of dried shark fin can retail for £200, with a dish of the highly coveted shark fin soup going for around £90 a pop - it’s a million dollar business and one that’s shrouded in controversy. It’s also a hot topic for conservation groups worldwide and rightly so - the trade could have a disastrous impact on marine life. Fins are farmed in such high numbers that the shark population has dropped dramatically in recent years and is unable to replenish fast enough. Over-fishing has driven many shark species’ numbers down by 95% - a concerning statistic, and one that impacts on other marine life too. After all, if you take out the top ocean predator you’ll find it’ll have a ripple effect on the whole aquatic food chain. ‘It’s an industrial process - there’s nothing partisan or romantic about fishing anymore,’ explains Shark Trust conservation officer John Richardson. ‘These ships are just huge and some of the long lines can be nearly 100 kilometres long with thousands of hooks. They put those out and the number of sharks they may catch is pretty mind-boggling. ‘At the moment it’s really just a minority of countries that have banned shark finning,
but enforcing the actual regulations is really difficult because you can’t police the whole ocean,’ Richardson continues. ‘The UK government is one of the most progressive and has a really positive, sustainable attitude to shark management. If any UK vessel wants to land sharks it has to make sure that all the dorsal fins on said sharks are naturally attached. In other words, they can’t be pinned on (which has happened in the past), they can’t be glued on (which, again, has happened in the past), and they can’t be tied on (which, unbelievably, people have also tried doing). ‘That means they are restricted to catching far fewer sharks per trip - you can imagine how many carcasses you can fit compared to how many fins - so that does make a difference, plus the fish enforcement guys can get a good idea of the exact species that’s being landed, so they know if they’ve landed a great white which is completely illegal and is protected around the world.’ The issue of finning was the focus of Gordon Ramsay’s Shark Bait, an hour-long special recently aired as part of Channel 4’s The Big Fish Fight, where the network’s top celeb-chefs champion sustainable seafood. Ramsay’s documentary pulled no punches, delving deep in >

to the ruthless world of shark finning and the culture that relies on it to survive. He talked to The Shark Trust’s Founding Trustee Sarah Fowler about the real-life implications this marine genocide holds. ‘The problem is that a shark’s carcass is not worth enough money to bother bringing it home, but the fins are money in your pocket,’ explained Fowler before describing the potential impact this could have on marine life: ‘You need that apex predator because they regulate everything that goes on in the marine food chain beneath them. Take those animals away and all sorts of things might happen that we haven’t even anticipated yet.’
involved in this ruthless practice, it’s a means to an end: they have families to feed, and, unfortunately for the sharks, shark fins are the most lucrative solution to that problem. ‘It’s very hard, these guys are under a huge amount of pressure to make money…but it’s not an excuse,’ explained Ramsay on the gory situation. ‘What a lot of people don’t realise is that the UK does still legally export fins but they have to use the ‘fins naturally attached’ method so there’s far fewer sharks being killed,’ adds Richardson, ‘but countries like Portugal and Spain have special fishing permits which mean they can still catch thousands of sharks and fin them. Spain and Portugal account for roughly 30% of all shark fins in the whole Hong Kong market, which is one of the biggest in the world, perhaps the biggest.’
‘When I got back downstairs, they tipped a barrel of petrol over me’
Ramsay then set off to South America and China, getting right onto the scene of the crime. What he discovered was a shady black market for shark fins, with those in charge (and, conveniently, also making the most profit) going all out to stop him uncovering the true extent of the problem.
He explained to the Telegraph how shark fin gangs ‘operate from places that are like forts with barbedwire perimeters and gun towers.’ An attempt to secretly film one such area almost ended in danger: ‘I managed to shake off the people who were keeping us away, ran up some stairs to a rooftop and looked down to see thousands and thousands of fins drying on rooftops as far as the eye could see. When I got back downstairs, they tipped a barrel of petrol over me,’ describes Ramsay. He also accompanied local fishermen on a long lining trip, witnessing finning first hand from those who rely on it for income. As he quickly discovered, it’s an issue with no easy solution. For many

However, there is still hope and The Shark Trust is leading the way in ensuring a brighter future for shark populations. ‘At the moment, the EU is reviewing its finning ban and the Shark Trust has contributed to it by putting in some submissions,’ enthuses Richardson. ‘What we’re hoping will happen is that the situation here in the UK, where sharks have to be landed with their fins naturally attached, will become the law throughout the EU. That will mean that Spain and Portugal won’t be able to do what they’re currently doing, and nor will any other country.’ So, hopefully, the next time the conversation turns to sharks, it will be their protection and conservation, not their Hollywood stereotypes, that will be the first thought to spring to mind. ■
