1. Manchester Tattoo Show 2010... Now in its 9th year this has developed into a truly international show featuring a selection of over 110 tattoo artists and body piercers. As opposed to some “big tattoo shows” they do not just limit the invites to big names in the industry as these guys know - we all have to start somewhere. So instore the show this year, as always, features, the best up and coming new tattoo artists, plus, trade stands, market stalls, a two day competition and much more. This years Tattoo Show is held at the Manchester Centre on 6th and 7th of March. Day tickets are £20 per day, per person, or if you are a tattoo fanatic you can purchase a weekend pass for £35 per person. 2. Launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in the UK... Make way for the latest model from Sony Ericsson, the sleek Xperia X10. Not only does it contain the genius invention that is Google Maps, but it also has an 8.1 Megapixel camera, Wi-Fi Connectivity and YouTube. The phone provides a new UX (user experience) platform that promises to expand over time, continuously introducing new features and capabilities. And it’s got a pretty snazzy design too! 3. Take That stole the show in 2009, will they do it again this year? It’s that time of year again when the musical talent of Britain gathers at London’s Earls Court Arena to honour the cream of the crop. This year will be extra special as it marks the shows 30th anniversary. It has been reported that funny man Peter Kay will be presenting the event, which will be broadcast on ITV totally live, so here’s hoping the event runs smoothly, although it’s always amusing to see drunken singers making fools of themselves on stage! The stars of last year’s show were Duffy, who picked up three gongs, and rock group Kings of Leon, who scooped two. Who will dominate the event this year is yet to be discovered; could it be Leona Lewis? Take That? Or maybe La Roux? We’ll just have to tune in to find out! 4. “History Boys” on at West Yorkshire Playhouse... Penned by the Leeds playwright Alan Bennett, the award winning History Boys is set to make its way to the West Yorkshire Playhouse, running from Feb 3 to March 6. Those of you who saw the film version of the famous play back in 2006 starring Dominic Cooper and James Corden, will have witnessed the sexual and dramatic chain of events of Sheffield sixth formers set in the nineteen eighties. Told in Bennett’s typical deadpan comic style, the story of these intellectual and downright randy students is both witty and intense. Page 6, Jan / Feb 2010 Viva

PES 2010: Seriously needed to improve on PES 2009 and I’m pleased to see that they have, although Fifa 2010 is probably winning over more gamers, as Serge from Kasabian says, ‘PES is still the gentlemen’s game.’ Vinnie Jones: Ruling the roost in the Big Brother house and generally enjoying making the ever needy Alex Reid his biatch, ‘I’m Del Boy and you’re Rodney you plonker.’ Good work Vinnie. Avatar 3D: I know everyone’s been harping on about it but what a film!! The beginning of the 3D film revolution begins and what a start. The films success has also made Sam Mendes make the exciting decision to release the next Bond installment in 3D… Booya!! Glastonbury 2010: U2 and Muse already confirmed, and rumours of The Rolling Stones and David Bowie… Lets Dance

MR NICE

HOWARD MARKS
The Nicest Guy in the Room: An Interview with Howard Marks...
I
t’s not every day you meet an international man of mystery. But Howard Marks, aka Mr Nice, is such a man. 43 aliases, 89 phone lines and 25 drug laundering fronts: they are statistics that follow him as surely as the waft of skunk. But sitting across from him in a cushioned leather booth in restaurant Azucar, it’s hard to believe Marks smuggled tons of cannabis around the world in the mid-1980s, evading secret agents along the way. Mild-mannered and unassuming, he looks like some sort of ageing Brit-rock star, Rolling Stones vintage. His face is kind, filled with roguish charm, revealing both the highs and lows of an incredible double life: an Oxford graduate turned million-dollar drug tycoon turned best-selling author. His autobiography, Mr Nice, sold over 750,000 copies in Britain alone. The aura of hype dissolves in a puff once we get talking. “The main misconception about me would be that I promote drug use. Which I don’t.” Marks’ voice is deep and deliberate, marked by a Welsh lilt. His speaking style is explicit without being brusque, peppered with idioms (countless ‘you knaw’s’) and dry wit. “I really don’t give a f*** whether people take drugs or not...I do care if people are punished if they try to do so…”. Marks is passionate about cannabis. That’s why in 1997 he formed the Legalise Cannabis Party and stood at the British general election. He lost, but succeeded in raising the profile of the issue. Howard Marks began smoking when he was a young student at Oxford (where he won a partial scholarship), but says he knew it was more than a hedonistic indulgence. “In the 60s marijuana smoking was much more a pursuit of the academic middle classes…so there was a lot of intellectual pretension surrounding it...” But it was always “intimately connected with philosophising if you like, or talking shit about something.” It was arguably his aptitude for the latter which permitted Marks to expand his varsity pot network into an international drug ring. What began as filling in for a busted dealer soon involved contacts across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and America, as well as
myriad personas - including the one that stuck, Mr Nice. There were key figures of course, from the Mafia, M16, the CIA, and the self-proclaimed Provisional IRA combatant Jim McCann who smuggled large consignments of dope from Pakistan through Ireland to Britain, hidden in the compartments of Ford Capris and driven by old Oxford pals. Marks later described the experience of driving a stash across the border as akin to “an asexual orgasm”. Has anything come close since then? Yes. “Pissing on acid”. Order a cocktail at the 5-stool bar in Azucar and to your right you’ll see a smattering of press clippings. One of them – the Daily Mirror - touts Mr Nice as “the most sophisticated drug baron of all time”. Even before he received that accolade, long before he became Britain’s most wanted criminal, Marks says he knew he would end up in jail. So what spurred him on? “Success, I suppose. You know, just being a successful drug smuggler.” He pauses on ‘drug’ and his voices drops. No sooner than he’s said it, he is laughing: “Who makes up these criteria as to whether you’ve done well or not!? But by the ones I made up I was doing very well, so I carried on doing it.” Donald Nice was unmasked and Marks did go to jail: Terre Haute federal penitentiary in Indiana, where he served seven years of a 25-year sentence. While there, he studied philosophy, practised yoga and became a crack jailhouse lawyer, helping inmates to achieve sentence reductions. When he was finally paroled himself, Marks felt insecure about his future. Writing was never something he took very seriously, but he had written hundreds of letters to friends from jail. Then he was asked to write his autobiography. “It took sort of two steps really: one, some publisher daft enough to give me a big pile of money and two, me thinking I could do better than a ghost writer.” The Daft Publisher was Secker & Warburg and the big pile of money was £100,000.
Page 9, Jan / Feb 2010 Viva
Feature
HOWARD MARKS ince then, Mr Marks has S written two more books (Dope Stories and Senor Nice)
and is compiling a third, an anthology called Tripping. Howard’s take on why his story has sold so many copies is an old literary chestnut: people love breaking the law, getting away with it –“which of course, is best experienced vicariously,” he chortles. It’s a phenomenon that was equally borne out with the bestseller Shantaram. But does he consider himself a countercultural icon? “Yes, whatever that means. An icon appeals to more than one section of the community – so I suppose I must appeal to both criminals and I hope, intellectuals. Normally there’s a slight contradiction or conflict in that.” There’s a fair amount of noise in the bar while we’re talking – the film crew from Killer Bitch is packing up after their shoot, Howard having made a cameo. He seems nonchalant. Due to his success as a writer, appearances in films and on stage are now commonplace, and some time this year, a biopic called Mr Nice will be released in cinemas, starring Rhys Ifans (The Boat That Rocked) and Chloe Sevigny (Kids & Boys Don’t Cry). The film charts his rise and fall (and rise), and is based on the book of the same name. Rather than boosting his iconic status further, Marks thinks the movie will maintain it and increase his book sales.
Page 10, Jan / Feb 2010 Viva
Talking about the movie, one gets the feeling the boy from the damp hills of Kenfig was born to push boundaries and become famous. When he was just a teenager, he lost his virginity to a girl in the vestry of a Chapel. At Balliol College (Oxford), he threw parties with Alan Price. When he owned a massage parlour in Thailand, he slept with seven women at once. He once licked a frog in
Argentina to get high on the psychedelic substance, DMT. He smuggled drugs in Pink Floyd’s band equipment. These are not exactly run-of-the-mill achievements. They only blow smoke up his media reputation as an egotistical man of danger. And yet, Howard Marks is a perennial everyman. He comes across as a kind of anti-wanker. What’s most astonishing is how unflappable he is – about everything. Maybe that’s the key to being a chameleon drug smuggler. How do I know it’s not another persona? If dining with mob bosses doesn’t rattle him, is there anything that does? Well, maybe. He still dreams of prison. “Very often I wake up you know ten times in the morning thinking I’m in prison...It’s not that worrying. It’s the sorta thing that happens.” And of course, he is fairly unforgiving about American accents. In the impromptu hierarchy of ‘Things that Piss Off Mr Nice’, the voice of Uncle Sam is No. 3 after “intolerance” and “arrogance”. We don’t talk too much about Howard’s family or how they feel about a film that may well aggrandise his public life even as it documents their private suffering. He’s divorced now, his children are grown up and I wonder whether after all these years, the Renaissance man who straddled the worlds of academia and crime, is not slowing down just a little. “I take acid occasionally,” he admits laughing mischievously, and for a second, I see glimpses of the boy behind the man. Thank you Howard Words by: Anthony Levin

e r u t a e F MEETING DAVID BECKHAM
V
iva’s James Davies chats to the former England captain and footballs biggest star at The Home Depot Center- home of the Los Angeles Galaxy- as he prepares for the World Cup and limbers up for, potentially, the season of his life...he’s ‘Beck’ to his best.
Say what you will about Beckham - and a lot has been made “of the fact that” after the years by members of the media - ‘ not by me’ - that he isn’t the brightest or most articulate guy in the world - he spoke intelligently, thoughtfully, openly and frankly. Never once did he waver or decline to answer a question, or try to skirt an issue. When answering a question about the recent reaction by L.A Galaxy fans over his decision to play in Europe, which has caused a minor ruckus, David just charmingly said: “I’m just trying to ignore it as much as I can. I think that’s the way you have to deal with these things. I’ve had it a lot worse than I’ve had here. After ’98 it was at its worst- but I’ve had it bad in a number of different places I’ve played- it’s just part of the game. When it happens, it can sometimes become a distraction not just for myself but for the team,” he mused. “The team have done well to deal with the situation. I’ve got the support of the players, the management and the owners and for me that’s the most important thing. I’m happy to be back and I’m happy to be playing with these players and with this team. I’m enjoying it,” he added philosophically. Amongst the crowd of American twangs came my English accent. Immediately David looked up and smiled at me- I think he had found it rather comforting to hear the tones of a ‘Brit’. With his attention fixed firmly on me, I began to explain to the superstar that I was in the States on a road trip, to which the affable midfielder smiled. “What would you advise me do while I’m here in L.A?” I asked. Without a hint of hesitation, David enthusiastically retorted, “Go to the beaches.” Adding:“There are quite a few nice beaches out there. L.A life is great. The weather’s great and people are always good to you. You’ll have a good time while you’re here.” I was impressed with the genuine niceness of the man who is, at times, all too easily and unfairly criticised. Having played for Manchester United, Real Madrid and A.C Milan-three of the biggest clubs in the world- as well as captaining his country, where does this insatiable drive that seems to be instilled in our finest football icon come from?
“My drive has come from my parents, my family and the clubs that I’ve played for and the mangers I played under. When you play under some of the managers I’ve played under, if you don’t have that drive then you don’t get in the team, so I have been brought up on it from an early age. My drive to succeed will always be insatiable. It was the way I was brought up and it’s the way I’ve always played. Every club that I’ve been at has driven me to success. Once it’s in you, I don’t think it will change.” Having reached the pinnacle of sporting success himself, what advice would he give the next generation of footballers who wished to become the next David Beckham and, if possible, achieve all he has accomplished throughout his illustrious career?
“I’ve been lucky with my career but I’ve worked hard to achieve what I have. Kids out there, if they want to become a professional footballer then you have to work hard and enjoy it. I’ve enjoyed my whole career and I’ll be very honoured to enjoy it until it finishes.” Asked about his plans after retirement, he said he wanted to make up for lost time with his family. You could tell from the way he lovingly talked about his wife and kids that he is a devoted family man and that he hates to be away from them for any length of time. It was refreshing to meet an athlete who keeps things in perspective. David Beckham is the most famous sports star in the world but, instead of puffing his chest out, he remembers what’s most important in this world: his family. A first-rate footballer? Yes. A first-rate person? Without question. Having waited many years to meet my hero, I was not disappointed and he was just the way I hoped he would be. Thank you David. These are to name but a few of the benefits from choosing to detox with Madal Bal, Naturel Tree Syrup Detox. You can buy Madal Bal, Naturel Lemon Detox from most health stores or buy online at www.healthmantra.co.uk.
WHY DETOX...
Much of what we eat today can have very limited nutritional value. Processed foods, saturated fats and artificial additives are now in everything we eat and drink. What’s more, chemicals and toxins introduced into the natural environment can also find their ways into our bodies, through the air we breathe and the water we drink. Allowing your body to expel these toxins is widely regarded as hugely beneficial. For centuries people have practiced fasting and many world religions use it as a integral part of their faith. However, there is no subsitute for a healthy lifestyle. The Lemon Detox plan will cleanse your body of toxins, but it is up to you to follow it with healthy living. For many people breaking the cycle of eating unnecessary amounts of un-nutritonal foods can be a real boost towards a long-term and healthier approach to eating.
MIXING THE DETOX DRINK... Per Glass:
20ml Madal Bal Naturel Tree Syrup (2 tb-spoons) Juice from 1/2 lemon (2tb-spoons) A small pich of cayenne pepper (adjust to taste) Dilute with 300ml (1/2 pint) of hot or cold water. The Total Detox:
Depending on how accustomed your body is to fasting the plan can be done between 5-7 days for those more experienced this can be extended uptp 10 days, but should only be done under guidance of a health care professional. During the detox, drink only the recommended liquids and do not eat solid foods. Each day drink 7-10 glasses of the detox drink, along with at least two litres of water. The Relaxed Diet
For those wishing to try a more relaxed version, over a longer period of time, you can subsitute breakfast and dinner with 2-3 glasses of the detox drink. Eat a healthy meal at lunchtime and avoid sweets, processed foods, white bread, red meat, fried foods, refined flour, dairy products and cigerettes and alcohol. Page 24, Jan / Feb 2010 Viva
This detox plan has been tried and tested by the team at Viva and is a great way to get refreshed for the New Year, we are looking and feeling great, once you get past the 3rd day it gets so much easier and you already start to feel the benefits!

BEING A SCOT, “SIR SEAN CONNERY!”
Viva’s James Davies, was left ‘shaken but not stirred’ after spending the morning with Sir Sean Connery, on his (00)78th Birthday. I wondered whether a character such as Bond existed, and was even more curious to find out whether Sir Sean Connery was anything like the cool and charismatic hero that made him a sex symbol, a multi-millionaire, a worldwide superstar and a cultural phenomenon. The one time coffin polisher is a notoriously private individual who, at times, likes to shy away from the glitz, glamour and relentless fuss that goes with his job. In fact Sir Sean’s craving for privacy was one of the reasons he decided to hang up his Walther PPK. Therefore, arranging ten minutes with this highly sought after star would not be easy. After contacting both his publicist and agent in Los Angeles, with the request to do an interview, with the great Scot, I was met with a firm no, explaining, “Sir Sean does not do interviews”. To my dismay I really thought it was, ‘Goodbye Mr Bond’. But like any good secret agent I had a Plan B. After scrawling through the internet and reading, ‘double 0, several’ articles, I came across a name- Murray Grigor. Murray, a lifelong friend of Sir Sean, and co-writer of his long awaited book, simply entitled Being A Scot, seemed the perfect person to lend a hand. Immediately I set to work and emailed the film maker in the hope he could help arrange a meeting. At first, it would seem even this attempt had failed as the first lines of his reply read, “James, your timing couldn’t be any worse”. By this, Murray was referring to the recent press Sir Sean had received and been unfairly subjected to, during the last couple of weeks. Nevertheless I remained upbeat. Although, it seemed a full blown interview was unlikely, a meeting was not, as Murray kindly invited me to Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, and the place of Sir Sean’s birth, where he was making a special appearance at the city’s International Book Festival to give a talk on his (00)78th Birthday. Walking through the revolving doors, of the hotel, I tried to run through what I would say to the Oscar winning actor. Perhaps, ‘Ah, Mr Bond, I’ve been expecting you’. On second thoughts, maybe not. After gathering a couple of realistic thoughts, I proceeded through to the elegant stairwell which looked into the dining room. There sat Sir Sean with his wife, the beautiful Micheline, whom he met playing his beloved golf. To be honest, it seemed somewhat strange to see Sir Sean eating breakfast, and doing something we all do. But why should it, he, like everyone else, is human? After being shaken, and stirred, I soon met Murray,
who promptly introduced me to the imposing actor, who still stands at an impressive 6’2”. The aura that exudes the Edinburgh born Scot is incredible and one I have never experienced before, with any other A-list star. His confidence and self assurance was clear to see as he roamed the hotel reception. “Sean this is James. James, Sean”, Murray said. Although I had worried about what I would say, I really did not need to. Sir Sean immediately put me at ease, making me feel welcome instantaneously. Far from saying “Do you expect me to talk?”, like he tells, his nemesis, Goldfinger in the 1964 epic, Sir Sean was a gentleman with an un-denying presence. The last great movie star put out his hand and lifted that famous eyebrow, saying in his broad and unmistakable Scottish accent, “Ah, nice to meet you James.”Adding, with a wry smile, “I was a James once”, to which we both laughed and shared a mutual grin. Sir Sean, 78, dapperly dressed in a white sweater, navy blue jacket and smart tartan trousers with matching scarf, oozed all the sophistication and charm he showed during the 1960’s while playing the Martini drinking, British agent. Standing together chatting really was quite a surreal moment. Although Sir Sean had obviously aged it was, as strange as it sounds, like talking to James Bond. After a short chat, Murray, Sir Sean and I made our way to the book launch. Surprisingly there was no driver waiting to take us. Sir Sean rather humbly opted to walk through the city streets where he once delivered milk. On seeing Scotland’s most famous export, people just stopped and starred. After all it is not every day you see a Hollywood star. Sir Sean laughed and joked the whole way, putting out his hand for anyone who wished to say hello. As well as telling me about the wonderful diner he had, had the night before, and how a street cleaning device had kept him awake most of the night, the actor, who now lives in the Bahamas, confessed, to my amusement, “I keep all my awards in the bathroom. Including the Oscar.” Once we arrived, we were all ushered in through the back entrance, where the world’s press were waiting. It was time for Sir Sean to disappear. But before he did, he turned to me and said, “Thanks for coming James”, raising that eyebrow once again, that often doubles as a smile. Far from being the ‘overgrown stuntman’, Bond’s creator Fleming once allegedly called him, Sir Sean was a star who made my day. With my mission complete, in true Bond style I left and went to see my Bond girls! (pictured accross!) (With Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller)

CHINO LATINO RESTAURANT AND COCKTAIL BAR
W
hen I first arrive at Chino Latino, I’m struck by its chilled out ambience. With its chic and stylish decor, relaxing red hues, and tempting aromas, it’s a place that instantly takes you away from the hustle and bustle of daily life; quite ironic to say that it is situated directly opposite the lively City Square. Located in the Park Plaza Hotel, on the first floor, alongside a lounge and bar area, I get there to receive a friendly welcome from the restaurants’ manager Jarbas Araujo and his staff. And as I sit down to look at the award winning Pan Asian menu, I can see that I’m going to be spoilt for choice. As far as costs go, Chino Latino is not for those on a tight budget – the price of their dishes ranges from a reasonable £3.50 to a costly £29.00 - but you pay for what you get which is good quality food and drink. For the starters, on offer is a variety of Eastern dishes from crispy duck pancakes to spicy fried squid and sushi rolls. We order the crispy soft shell crab which is served with creamy curry, pink pepper corns and fresh mango. The sweetness of the mango combined with the spicy taste of the curry and peppercorns creates a deliciously balanced concoction for the delicate crab meat. The main courses include dishes such as free range grilled chicken with green mung beans and spicy tamarind sauce, slow cooked pork belly with spiced apple chutney, and the award winning Lobster Jungle Curry. We soon realise why the latter is such a critically acclaimed dish. Bursting with colours and flavours, the lobster is served with mouth watering ingredients such as grapes, scallops, and prawns. Having never tried lobster before, it is amazing how tender it is; unlike a lot of fish, its taste is not too overpowering either. We order a side order of coriander rice; coriander is not usually to my tastes but, when combined with the flavours of the curry, its strong citrus flavour becomes less intense, giving it a more pleasant taste. Our food is served with an Argentinian red wine which is packed with cooked red fruit aromas and spices such as black pepper which you can definitely taste. For dessert, we opt for the Triple Chocolate Fondant and the Green Tea Crème Brûlée with coconut macaroons and ginger ice cream. Both arrive perfectly presented and are deliciously rich without being overly sweet. The texture of the crème brûlée is just right, with the ginger ice cream being a delicious accompaniment. Overall, the diversity of Chino Latino’s menu is reflected in their dishes with each one containing a fusion of contrasting ingredients, all which complement each other perfectly. I’m only sorry that I didn’t get the chance to sample more of what was on offer. Jan / Feb 2010 Viva

A: Enjoyable, Relaxed, Captivating Q: Would your friends get on with Nick? A: Yes definitely, we’re into the same sort of things and go to the same sorts of clubs and bars.
PROFILE NAME: Nadine AGE: 30 OCCUPATION: Accounts Assistant INTERESTS: Socialising, Gym, Outdoor Activities Q: What were your first impressions of Nick? A: Well I did notice that he was younger than what I was expecting, but he was really nice and immediately easy to get on with. Q: Were there any awkward silences or did the conversation flow? A: No none, we had a lot in common and had loads to talk about. We never had any awkward pauses or anything, which was great because there’s nothing worse on a date than having nothing to say to each other! Q: What did you order to eat? Did your date have any bizarre eating habits? A: We ordered 2 tapas dishes from each of the fish, meat and vegetarian menus including King Prawns, paella and a chorizo and mushroom dish. We liked the same things, which was great, and we telepathically knew which dessert to go for! No he didn’t have any weird habits, he had excellent table manners.
Q: What did you like most and least about Nick? A: I really liked his easy-going persona and I was really comfortable around him. Least? Well the fact that he offered me his tequila cocktail when I HATE tequila! I had a really bad experience on it and the taste brought it all back! Apart from that I can’t think of anything bad about him. Q: What did you guys talk about? A: Leeds! The nightlife and socialising, friends we have in common, we also talked about food and holiday destinations. Q: So I have to ask, will you be going in for a cheeky kiss at the end of the evening? A: I’d have to say no, mainly because of the age difference. But we added each other on facebook over dinner and I think we could be really good friends. Q: Would you be interested in going on a second date with Nick? A: I will definitely meet up with Nick for drinks or clubbing but I have to say not in a ‘date’ situation. Q: What was the atmosphere and service like in the restaurant? A: It was a really relaxed environment and the service was great, the staff were really attentive and friendly so we felt very well looked after. Q: Describe your date in 3 words. Did your date have any bizarre eating habits? A: It was great because we liked the same sort of thing. We got a mix of the tapas menu including the chef’s chicken, prawn and peanut special, which was great. She did have some weird habits yes! She was quite open with her OCD tendencies, she had to stack the plates as soon as they were empty and all the dishes had to be colour co-ordinated! I didn’t mind though I thought it was quite funny!
Q: What did you like most and least about Nadine? A: I really liked how talkative and interesting she was, we had great conversations and she was really lively and enthusiastic. Least? Chris, we know a lot about your illustrious and incredibly successful career in broadcasting but we don’t know too much about your childhood and what you were like growing up. Can you tell me a little about your early years?
I grew up on a council estate in Warrington, which was tough. Sadly, my Dad died prematurely- if you can say that about anyone dying at anytime- so life in the beginning was quite hard for me. Apart from that, my early life was great. But I’ve always had this desire to do well and to try and enjoy life. I think I’ve done that.
Where did your interest in broadcasting come from? It came from listening to the radio and from watching the T.V. From Noel Edmonds Swap Shop, to Mike Reid’s breakfast show, to Timmy Mallet and from my brother who was a disc jockey at a club. But I think the light went on when I went to see Timmy Mallet do a road show at Old Trafford football ground. That was very exciting. I interviewed him, much like you’re doing to me, and asked him how I could get a job with him. Fortunately for me, there was a guy who was helping him who was leaving, so I wrote off for his job and got it. There was no money. I didn’t get paid for four years but it was experience you couldn’t buy and so that’s how the radio thing started. What was it like working with your hero? It was frightening. Primarily that’s the first thing I think when I think about working with Timmy because his show was so manic and so demanding and compelling and brilliant that to panic was the main ingredient to the night...for me at least. But I learnt so much. It was such a quick learning curb. Ninety per cent of what I do now is still based on what I learnt when I was working with him. Although you’ve been broadcasting for a number of years now, are you nervous about taking over from Sir Terry (Wogan)? It’s going to be a very tough gig. But it’s what I do for a living. It’s not like I’m being asked to play football for England. Although I do want to be the Wayne Rooney of Radio 2- I want to work hard for the team for ninety minutes and more. You’ve had an incredibly successful career in both television and radio. What do you think makes a good broadcaster? Terry! He’s extremely articulate and confident. He’s got
Page 40, Jan / Feb 2010 Viva
a fantastic voice, good dictation, and a brilliant education. He makes emails sparkle. He takes some pretty average material and makes it sing. I don’t know how he does it.
What do your family and friends think of your success and all that you’ve been able to achieve because you’ve been incredibly successful haven’t you? I don’t know really. I don’t know what they think of it. I think they like it. I think my Mum likes it but I’m not sure. We don’t really talk about it to be honest. I’m from one of those families that keep your feet very firmly on the ground. My friends- I don’t really have many friends from when I was younger but I hope most people are happy for me. I imagine being in the public eye is an incredibly surreal experience, particularly when people want pictures and autographs. What do you like to do away from the spotlight? Oh god, it is. What I love to do is sit in my garage and smell the cars. I love smelling my cars. I know it sounds silly but I know exactly where I am when I’m doing that. I also like to be with my son and I like to have dinner and a glass of wine with my wife every night. That’s it really. Just the simple things. It wasn’t always that way though. In the 90’s I think it’s fair to say you enjoyed a night out? I did, but all the mayhem of the 90s wasn’t who I was – I was taken away with the times. I was living the rock star’s lifestyle, pulling women I’d never dreamt of and it was party time. I used to go out for days at a time and get smashed. I wasn’t an alcoholic, but I definitely had a problem. I did drink too much. And when you go to parties you do strange things – especially if they last for a while. Mine lasted anything between five and ten years. I didn’t really like it though. I like being on my own. How did living that sort of lifestyle affect you? I stopped putting the hours in and started to live the life. I’d become a self-important twat. I thought I was invincible. I was utterly confident for all the wrong reasons. And now I’m confident for all the right reasons. Probably a bit less confident than I was then, even though I’ve got more to be confident about. I became an idiot when I thought I was moving on the same level as the bands and actors who came on TFI Friday. I thought I was part of Oasis, and what I am really is a facilitator. I forgot that. I’ve got back to why I loved radio in the first place, what I’m here for. I push the boundaries every day. We’re still being as creative, but not as loud and brash.
You’ve had some fantastic guests on your shows and were able to interview some quite remarkable people. From George Best to the Spice Girls, Pierce Brosnan to Tom Jones. What was that like? It was interesting and intriguing. Because the show was live I didn’t really have time to get into them. You’re talking to me for longer than I ever talked to any of those guests in four years. So it was fun but there wasn’t much depth to it. I got a sense of who people were but I didn’t really get into them like you are. This is a different sort of journalism- it’s more comprehensive. We had fun but I would have liked to have talked to them for longer. You mention George Best. What I remember most about George is when he came to my house. We had this football and he said ‘go on then, kick it to us’. I kicked it to him and it was unbelievable. He literally plucked it out of the air- amazing. He was like fifty odd. Did you ever imagine you would be as successful as you are and achieve all you have? It’s quite remarkable isn’t it? Well every single job I’ve ever had- maybe with the exception of one- I absolutely loved. I was a newsagent and I absolutely loved it. When I worked behind the bar at the Red Lion in Warrington I loved it. Even being a fork-lift truck driver was great. It’s all been great. But the success I’ve had is brilliant but it’s contemplative and what’s better than that is talking to you- the next generation. Success can get in the way though. It can be a bit of a heavy bag to carry.
Would you ever consider going back into television? It’s not a question of whether I’m going to return to TV. It’s a question of whether TV is going to be there to be returned to. I would go back if we could come up with an idea that was different and new. When I was on Jonathan’s (Ross) show it was very exciting to be there but not for a second did I want to be Jonathan and I was quite relieved that I wasn’t. When you look back at your career I imagine you have some great memories and reflect fondly on it. Do you have any regrets? The only thing I regret in my life is the thing with my daughter because that’s huge and wrong. I was a selfish prick. I regret that, but there’s nothing I can do about it. What advice would you give to anyone wanting to break into broadcasting today and emulate, if possible, all you have been able to achieve? Take it one step at a time. Have an end goal in mind but don’t become self-important like I did. Always keep it simple and don’t over flower anything. Perhaps most importantly, don’t have any baggage. Keep re-doing things time and time and time again until you absolutely don’t have time to do it anymore because things can always get better. udi designer Walter de’Silva, who designed the bodywork for the R8, began working in the auto motive industry in 1972 for Fiat, followed with nine years at I.DE.A institute in automobile and engineering before being snapped up by Alpha Romeo. Walter then spawned a new generation of sophisticated but modern shapes you see in the Alfa today such examples are the 156, 147 adding curves and appreciating build quality to the highest specification. In March 2002 Walter de’Silva was appointed Head of Design to the now globally know company Audi, he is responsible for the Audi Nuvolari concept, A4, A3 Sportback, his first full design from start to finish was the 2004 A6, this again spouts off from his few years at Alpha seeing the suttle curves to produce a visually immaculate machine. Obviously from these few cars you can straight away see the brainchild of the R8 V10 using those gentle curves to engulf your mind in the elegance of the body to the raging velocity of the V10 under the bonnet. One of the sharpest, clean cut v10 supercars to hit the streets of Briton in many years. You may compare this to the Lamborghini Gallardo, well near enough the same engine, but the R8 wins hands down in practicality. SHUTTER ISLAND: FEBRUARY 19th 2010
or the fourth time Martin F Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio re-unite for this
adaptation of a novel by famous mystery/thriller author Dennis LeHane who has already had two of his books turned into critically acclaimed films, ‘Mystic River’ and ‘Gone, Baby, Gone’. Set in 1954, an up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) along with his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are assigned to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer) a murderess patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. Naturally, there are twists and turns as the plot thickens and before long Teddy wonders whether he hasn’t been brought to the Island as part of a corrupt plot by hospital doctors, whose nihilist treatments range from immoral to illegal to downright nasty. He is
convinced that Dr. Cowley (Ben Kingsley) is conditioning his patients to lie about the events that might have occurred.
Teddy’s cunning investigating skills soon provide an encouraging lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more menacing criminals breakout in the confusion, and the obscure, dubious notions multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything, his memory, his partner, even his own sanity. Without giving away too much because I believe the strength of this film lies in how all the information is presented to us, Teddy tries to discover how Rachel, the all-too-perfect Doctor, and a mysterious lighthouse are all interconected. The last time Scorsese and DiCaprio teamed up, Scorsese finally won that directing
Oscar for ‘The Departed,’ and as cinema history demonstrates there have been many legendary actor/director pairings. Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant. Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, and of course, Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese. These days, however, Scorsese has found himself a new muse. The pair have made three acclaimed films together, ‘Gangs of New York,’ ‘The Aviator’ and ‘The Departed,’ for which each of them were nominated for their respective Oscars. Now Scorsese is making a return to thriller territory for the first time since ‘Cape Fear’ in the early 90’s, which is one of the reasons ‘Shutter Island’ looks so interesting. He’s the master of suspenseful drama creating tension even in his non-thriller films. People like thrillers, they like twisty endings, they like Martin Scorsese and this material seems very well suited to Scorsese’s style.

START - DISTRIKT
Getting ready for NYE I always feel slightly apprehensive, if New Years Eve had feelings it would have long ago cracked under all the pressure of trying to ensure everyone enjoyed the mother of all celebrations. As soon as I stepped into Distrikt I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about the evening being a big fat anti-climax, which I have unfortunately come to expect from over-priced, over-hyped NYE events in the past. Only open for 12 weeks Distrikt had already forged a name for itself amongst the Leeds party people, so by the time the New Year came around the atmosphere inside this intimate venue was of no disappointment. Despite Distrikts size and slightly dodgy alleyway location, it boasts some excellent credentials – hosting some of Leeds biggest free entry pre parties to top resident club nights around the city such as Louche, Asylum, System and DD. NYE was no exception with revellers out in force to celebrate the arrival of 2010 in style. Although everyone had to temporarily put partying on hold for 20 minutes whilst the fire alarm wailed out it’s own persistent celebration, the rest of the night was filled with those all important NYE smooches and relentless dancing (albeit badly) due to the variety of good party tunage on offer and fuelled by an impressive array of booze to choose from.
NEW YEARS EVE 2010 FINISH - MINT CLUB
Post Big Ben’s bongs I moved on to popular Leeds destination Mint Club where I partied until the early hours of 2010 with no regard for time or fatigue. Having recently undergone a major refurb with a lot of money spent on a very fancy sound & lighting system, the club looks and sounds fantastic. The base literally shakes your bones if you stand still long enough, which lets face it, is not something you’re going to be doing with some of Leeds finest DJ’s playing set after mind blowing set right in front of you. Reasonable drink prices ensured everyone was just a bit more than merry and all up for some serious partying action and with the likes of System & DD providing the soundtrack, good times on the dance floor were a definite given. Another significant plus is the addition of an outdoor smoking / chill out area with it’s own separate DJ, located just off of the main dance floor this great space meant you didn’t feel like you were missing out on any action whilst indulging in a sneaky sit down or on a fag break. Perhaps one of the most impressive things however about this venue is the management teams concern whether everyone is having fun, run by a tight knit group of friends they really care about the success of the place and their punters satisfaction. With an immense line-up scheduled for the next 3 months will definitely be back and urge you all to join me! Page 48, Jan / Feb 2010 Viva

VIVA LAS LEEDS - YOU
U BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE
e r u t a e F
Viva: The title of your latest album, ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’ was a real asylum back in the 18th century, and Serge has mentioned that if he were to get put into some sort of mental asylum, it would be for “setting up a tent in Buckingham Palace.” Do you believe that there is a fine line between genius and madness?
Viva: Talking of Zeppelin, The Stones and The Who, they were big in an era where Rock Stars really were treated like Stars. Trashing hotel rooms, mass orgies and copious amounts of narcotics was all standard rock n’ roll antics; they could pretty much get away with anything! In this day and age has that rock n’ roll lifestyle ended or are you keeping it alive?
Serge: Absolutely, there has got to be a point where if you concentrate all your energy and thoughts into one area then there’s got to be something not quite right, not quite there ya know. But its funny, I think that it won’t be the big things that send you mad, something big will happen to you, but you’ll snap a shoe-lace and that will be the final tipping point to the other-side.
Serge: Well back in the day they were making bucket loads of money, so it was easy for them to flitter and do such things ya know and that is just not the case anymore. But we have a romantic view on life and adhere to that sort of lifestyle, so yeah we love a party, like fucking Frank Gallagher man, know what I mean. But if I had a Rolls Royce and drove it into a swimming pool I would be like, ar man that was a bad idea, I’d probably have to do it in a Ford Capri.
Viva: It has been reported that you wanted to film a concert for a DVD release, and that you would like legendary film director Quentin Tarantino to direct it. Have you managed to get him on-board? And what is your favourite Tarantino film? Serge: Um no not yet, I would love to, I’m sure if you asked any band in the world that they would probably say the same thing, so its probably unlikely but I would love to. Viva: What is your favourite Tarantino film? Serge: Difficult question… I would say Kill Bill 1 and 2; they’re the ones that I go back to. Viva: At your gigs people get out of their seats and go mental; Just like the founders, Zeppelin, the Stones, the Who, its rock n’ roll you can dance to. What do you think of the current state of British Indie/Rock and which bands do you like at the moment? Serge: I’m not really a massive fan of Indie I have to say, it’s not really my kind of music. But I follow a band called ‘Maneki’ that are really good and Miles Kane from the ‘The Last Shadow Puppets.’ I’ve heard a few of his tunes that he’s making at the moment and they’re fantastic, so that’s something to look out for.
Viva: A number of your songs have featured on various computer games most notably on football games, ‘Club Foot,’ on Pro Evolution Soccer 5, L.S.F on FIFA 2004 and, ‘Fast Fuse,’ on FIFA 09. So are you FIFA or Pro Evo? Serge: Oh this is a big question, I understand this question very well. I used to be pro-evolution through and through, I used to beat people up who ever even mentioned that Fifa was anywhere near as good. I must say that pro-evolution is a gentlemen’s game, but I have to say and it does pain me to say this, but the new Fifa is actually better than pro-evolution soccer and that’s me saying it as a whole-hearted pro-evo fan. Viva: Back in April, ‘Vlad the Impaler,’ was available for free download for a period of 4 days, would you ever consider in the future giving an album away for free like Coldplay or let people pay what they want like Radiohead did with, ‘Rainbows?’ Serge: Radiohead were very clever though, they knew their fans, it turned out they made more money doing that than just releasing it normally. But it depends ya know… who knows.
Viva: Some people believe that illegal downloads have in some ways been good for the Music Industry, in the sense that bands can no longer rely on album sales to make their money and therefore have to tour and be good live! What are your views on this? Serge: Well yes it has certainly helped, but it kinda should have been the case anyway, you should be good live, when people pay money you should be good, you should give them a wonderful evening. I think if you’re going to take music off the net, or if you hear something on the radio and you think oh that’s pretty cool, then go and buy the album. Just getting it for free all the time doesn’t seem right, but personally do whatever you want, I’ve got nothing against it, I just think if you hear a tune and you like it, then get the album that seems fair ya know. Viva: What are the most ridiculous rumours mentioned in the media about Kasabian that you actually wished were true? Serge: Well it’s a bit of a weird one because its actually been confirmed as true but I didn’t believe in it at the time. It was said that Arnold Schwarzenegger works-out to our album; I thought that was the most incredible thing, but didn’t think that it could be true, but it actually turned out it was because his daughters a really big fan. Viva: Finally if you could create a world super-band made up of Rock legends from the past and present, who would be in the group? Serge: Ok, well I’d have two singers, Tom and Liam Gallagher and then I’d have me on bass, Noel on lead Guitar, I’d have ‘Mitch’ Mitchell on drums and then I’d probably have to have Jimi Hendrix… ya know what I’m going to have everyone, there’s going to be about eighty people in this band.

IAN BROWN SMASHES O2 ACCADEMY...
A
s the crowd settles in and awaits the emergence of Ian Brown, it would have been easy to think that people were there just for the music. However a large contingent of the crowd begin the apparently increasingly popular chant: “Yorkshire! Yorkshire”. It would seem any visitors from Manchester to Leeds cannot avoid this treatment, and it is not missed by Brown, who emerges with his trademark tambourine in hand. “Who’s for Leeds?” only just out performs “Who’s for Manchester?” in decibels and completely unfazed by the geographical tensions in the audience the gig gets going. A combination of volume and showmanship sees Brown stealing all attention as he carves through the air with microphone and tambourine, still somehow wearing a leather jacket in the face of the immense heat generated by his unswerving fans.
Reaching into his growing back catalogue, Corpses in Their Mouths tempers the preceding pounding bass and beats with a chorus that, as “an old one”, has huge appeal to the older contingent of the crowd; those who may have seen Brown in his earlier incarnation and recall the dreamlike qualities of tracks from the Stone Roses era. Back to more recent times, “Keep What Ya Got”, although the work of not one, but two of Manchester’s prodigal sons (Noel Gallagher), provides the loudest participation and finally the crowd is one, and more importantly, his. Never missing a beat Brown takes the opportunity to mention the release of his new album My Way, of course in his own manner: “Who bought it? Who downloaded it for free? Who nicked it? Who’s borrowed it off a mate and not given it back?”; a barrage of questions no doubt applicable to most present. He then launches into what for many, will have been their first taste of Ian Brown’s solo work, F. E. A. R., and it translates brilliantly live. As Brown brings his set to an end, “Just Like You” creates an excellent and unifying end to the night. With focus now fully on him, the relevance of old allegiances and rivalry seems detached from the minds of those present as all within earshot seem to have come to similar conclusions: “he was fucking great”. Bridging age gaps and cooling territorial disputes…all in a nights work for a king.
JULIAN CASABLANCA’S WOOS LEEDS
I
f you’re going to admit to having a man-crush, it may as well be for The Strokes frontman, Julian Casablancas. On 10 December, The Met hosted one of rock’s most charismatic performers showcasing his first solo album Phrazes for the Young. The mood was expectant as Casablancas swaggered on stage, Messiah in a black leather jacket, to sing ‘Ludlow Street’ – a song both tribal and futuristic at first that quickly morphs into electro-folk. It was a gentle way to open the set, but a perfect chance for Casablancas to unleash his velvety goodness. Next came ‘11th Dimension’, a retro-cheesy wake-up call popular with the varsity crowd.
But it was ‘River of Brakelights’ that proved Casablancas is no solo waif. The song is, quite simply, brilliant. A rapid baseline like a future crime thriller quickly becomes a sea of minor chords with an anarchic background texture. There’s a complex degree of disharmony at the heart of this song and one wonders whether it’s all too deft for a live gig, but with Casablancas’ magnetism it works - even with the broken gameboy interlude which had the kids lining up for robot camp. On the whole, the music is dark without being glib; joyful without being sentimental. ‘Out of the Blue’ is a pop song with a chorus to sink your teeth into and the crowd revelled in some good old ‘Ohhhh ohhh ohhhs’. On stage, there’s a bit of Johnny Cash about this hypnotic man: the resonant voice, the nonchalance, the loose regard for decorum (even the initials J.C.)…and if the original ‘Man in Black’ had had access to synths and keyboards, he just might have made an album like Phrazes. With the exception of I Wish It Was Christmas Today, the whole experience sounded like the birth of an epoch. So if you want instamatic pop songs, listen to Kylie. If you want rewards, time and time again, Jules is your man. Senõr Casablancas: you had us at Hey. Page 54, Jan / Feb 2010 Viva
