President’s Message On Behalf of the Arkansas State Trapshooting Federation Board of Directors, I would like to invite you to the 2019 Arkansas State Trap Shoot. I would like to thank each and every one of the Board Members for their hard work and dedication in making this event one of the best in the country. I would also like to thank Eddy Kinslow for the many hours spent working on this great program. Eddy also volunteers his time designing and maintaining the Arkansas State Trapshooting Federation website. It truly does take the entire team working together to be able to produce such a quality event. So, again, I say thank you for all your hard work. I also want to thank our many sponsors for their contributions and donations (listed in the front of the program book). These donations have allowed us to grow so that we can increase the amount we are able to return back to the shooters in the form of added money, trophies, and prizes. As a result our added money this year will be $13,400 in-state and $4,100 out-of-state. I will put our percentage of out-of-state purse money against any state shoot in the country. Also returning this year is the Handicap Jackpot. If you play this option and run 100 straight in the Handicap Championship you will go home with $9,500 (ties divide). I challenge you to find a State Shoot of our size anywhere in the country that gives away as much money. For the fifth year Federal Premium Ammunition is the sponsor for our 3 Championship Events. Other returning event sponsors include White Flyer, Red River Dodge and Bella Vista Sportsmen’s Club. I would also like to welcome back Banded/Avery Outdoors as the title sponsor for our AIM Singles Championship on June 18th. As a returning tradition this year, the events on Wednesday will honor the 2018 ASTF Champions. Tanner Cooper, Lane Ward and Steven Powell – Our hats off to you guys for your performance in last year’s Championship Events. Enjoy your day. As many of you know our Arkansas shooting family lost Daniel Griffin late last summer. Event 8 will be named in Daniel’s honor to reflect the impact he had on the ASTF. Daniel was one of our proven young shooters having made the Clay Target Championship shootoff twice before he was 18. To me he will always be known as the kid that always had a smile and was the anchor for our squad of juniors who broke the first ever 500x500 at the 2016 Grand. Daniel you will be missed by many. Last but not least, I would like to thank the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation and the City of Jacksonville for the use of their amazing facilities. Without this great venue, a shoot of our size would not be possible. We hope you can join us at this year’s 2019 Arkansas State Shoot. We would love to see you there. Until then – Keep Your Head Down. Dennis Tune ASTF President

2019 ASTF Hall of Fame Inductee
Andy Waldo Arkansas native, Andy W. Waldo III began shooting in 1967. Andy’s career has allowed him to shoot at many gun clubs in Arkansas including some that do not exist today including the Helena Gun Club, Fayetteville Gun Club, and Little Rock Gun Club. His list of accomplishments throughout his career is impressive from being the ASTF President in 1998 to being a 5 time State Team Member. With his first recorded win in 1969, Andy would go on to accumulate numerous titles in Arkansas and Out-of-State. With wins ranging from class championships, handicap titles, HAA and HOA’s. Out of all Andy’s victories, his favorite was in 1994 at the Grand American, where his family witnessed him win Runnerup in the Class B Doubles Championship. Andy was one of the many pillars in the ASTF’s framework, with his greatest contribution being his time. Andy volunteered countless hours putting together local and state shoots. His efforts did not go unnoticed as fellow shooters from Louisiana asked for help from Waldo and friends to improve shooting in Louisiana. Although Andy stepped away from trap shooting for several years, to tend to family and business obligations, his passion for the sport and the people has always remained the same. It’s the mentoring, camaraderie and love of trap shooting that has laid the foundation for his accomplishments. A foundation that helped pave the way for younger generations. His return would be just as impressive as the start to his career; winning multiple HOAs, HAAs in veteran and senior veteran. What Andy would enjoy most was the relationships he would forge throughout his years of trap shooting. “Men, like Andy, taught us that there’s gonna be down times. It’s how you carry yourself. Having fun whether you shot good or not. Nobody sees you sweat. It’s something kids today just don’t get to see much, if ever.” - Robby Pennock He’s shot over 100,000 registered targets and has recorded many memorable wins over the years including: 2018 Arkansas State Trapshoot, Senior Veterans Singles and Double State Champion The 1994 Grand American Class B Runner-Up Doubles Event Southwestern Grand at Oklahoma Trapshooting Ass. (OTA) - 1994 Won Class C – Doubles Missouri Fall Handicap 2004- Doubles Class B Winner 2005 Tyler, Texas- Yellow Rose Shoot: Won Class A Singles Championship – 199; Doubles Championship - Class B Runner-Up – 97; Veterans Handicap Championship 94. Veterans HOA - 488 X 500; Won 4 Yellow Rose Buckles Missouri Fall Handicap 2007- Singles AA Runner-Up with a 200 X 200 Louisiana State Trap Shoot - 2017: Won: Veterans Handicap Championship (Tied for Highest Score in the Handicap Championship) Highest Handicap Yardage Earned: 27 Yard line Andy’s generation poured their hearts and souls into the ASTF back when few people knew it existed. In fact, many local shooters feel the ASTF is now on the radar of trap shooting’s biggest names because of that hard work and dedication from the “good ‘ol days.” Andy can be described in many words: outdoorsmen, husband, father, and businessman. But what we would come to know him as is a friend to all and a great ambassador for the sport of Trap Shooting in Arkansas.

2019 ASTF Hall of Fame Inductee
Steve Mathis Steve Mathis’ love for shooting came early in his life. Steve was a duck guide for 22 years and has been involved with the Delta Waterfowl and Waterfowl USA and their celebrity hunts. He has guided for a few outdoor television shows and even made his own line of duck calls during his last years of guiding. Steve has been involved with trapshooting for 35 years. He began shooting trap in 1983 after seeing the state trap shoot on the local TV news. He later visited the Remington Gun Club, and with the encouragement of its shooting manager, Billy Crutchfield, he began shooting Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) trap. He was hooked! Steve shot his first 100 straight in 1984 and made the 27yard line in 1989. He has shot a lifetime total of 44,450 singles; 35,300 handicap; and 33,900 doubles targets to date. Steve has served as the director and vice-president of the Arkansas State Trapshooting Federation board. He has coached in the Arkansas Youth Sport Shooting Program (AYSSP), and he has had teams finish 2nd and 3rd in the state. During his career, Steve has earned numerous awards. He was the high handicap average leader in 1986 and 1987; the overall state class champ in 1985 and 1986; the 1989 State Handicap runner-up. Then, in 1990, he was the State doubles and all-around champion and the 1990 Petty Family trophy winner. Between the years of 1992 and 2006, Steve spent his spare time with his sons Patrick and Hunter. But, when in 2006 Hunter asked his dad to teach him how to trap shoot, Steve knew it was time to get back into the sport. And he did with a vengeance. In 2006, Steve earned the title of state doubles runner-up; 2007 he was the high handicap average leader; 2011 he was the Mississippi State AA doubles championship; 2012 he won the Arkansas AA doubles championship; 2013 and 2016 he was the high overall state class champ; 2017 he won the state sub-vet doubles championship title. Then, in 2018, he won the doubles championship and the high all-around championship at the Arkansas Fall Handicap trapshooting competition. Steve has won many other preliminary events in singles, handicap, and doubles both in and out of Arkansas. He has made the Arkansas state trapshooting team 17 times and served as its captain in 2008. Steve has participated in the Grand American World Championship (GAWC) in Sparta, Illinois many times. He was the yardage group runner-up in preliminary handicap competition in 2013, and won A class runner-up in it preliminary singles event in 2014. Steve also made it into the class shoot-offs of the World Championship Clay Target singles event in 2013 and 2016. He tied for 3rd place in class high all-around championship in 2016. Steve has been fortunate enough to shoot in several different states at various clubs like the Shreveport Gun Club (Louisiana), the Memphis Gun Club (Tennessee), and the Corinth Gun Club (Mississippi). During Steve’s trapshooting career, he has been a good ambassador for the State of Arkansas, a good sportsman, and last but not least, a good friend to any and all who have met him. He is always willing to help any new shooter or even and old pro in a slump. The ASTF has been blessed to have a shooter like Steve representing the State of Arkansas.

2019 ASTF Hall of Fame Inductee
Ben Forte Ben started shooting in 1966, at the West Chester Gun Club, in Pennsylvania, with his father Giuseppi. His father and family friend Frank Little helped him get a good foundation in shooting and coaching. Ben won his first trophy at the Coral Reef Preliminary Handicap at the Delaware State Shoot, in 1970. He started to work at West Chester Club as a trap loader, in 1966. Ben held every position at one time or another, at the club, with a membership of 450 shooters. During this period Ben also went out to shoot in a lot of the clubs in the Northeast. He won trophies at the Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland state shoots. He won awards at the Pennsylvania Grand, the Westey Hogan, and Spring Grand in Litchfield, AZ. Back surgeries slowed Ben down in 1995 through 1998, but he continued to shoot and work at the West Chester gun club until the year 2000. After 35 years at the club as a shooter and worker Ben moved to Camden, Arkansas. After Ben's move to Camden in 2000, he made friends with Tony Pass. Tony then asked Ben to manage and run the club, using all the knowledge he had gained working at West Chester. Ben helped Camden through some troubling times during this period. He also started to shoot all over the State of Arkansas. In 2007, Ben won the Remington Handicap with the lone 98. The same year he had 200 straight at the Southwest Zone in Lonoke, losing in a shoot off but still winning his class. He won the Sub Vet Handicap Championship in 2012 with a 95 and tying for high the next two years. Ben had another injury in 2009, rupturing a disc in his neck requiring metal support. He was unable to get back to his best level of shooting after the injury, but he still helps others. He started coaching the AYSSP with the Camden/Fairview team, both Junior High and Seniors, when the program began 8 years ago , at Camden/Fairview. The last few years he has worked with shooters from Smackover, Columbia Christian, Harmony Grove/ Camden, Magnolia, and other AYSSP shooters who come to Camden to practice. Ben has given countless hours of instruction to young shooters in South Arkansas who ask for his help. Ben has been a Board Member for the ASTF for about 5 years. He started helping with the State Shoot Program book in 2011. He helped grow the ad revenue to a new level of $11,500 in 2018. In 2013, he helped with the state trophy awards and greatly improved them. He accepted and completed the task of helping the Rick Evans Grandview wildlife center, Warren, Delta and Mountain get ATA certified and was on call to answer question during the shoots. Ben is currently consulting for Southern Arkansas University concerning a new trap and skeet facility which will be used by SAU, AYSSP teams, as well as the general public. The facility plans to hold monthly ATA shoots. Ben has been active in the sport for over 50 years, he has shot 112,850 registered targets to date. He has won awards all over the country. He has been blessed to receive help from many people.. He has been able to pass this knowledge on to many young shooters. You can find Ben now, at the Camden Gun club, managing the club, cutting the grass, working on the trap machines and whatever else needs to be done. He runs an ATA shoot every Saturday from March until the first week in October, his greatest love now is to help kids get started and reach their potential.
