STAFF PICK MAGNOLIA (18) Director Paul Thomas Anderson Starring Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore USA I 2000 I 188 mins

The tale of a pen-friendship between Mary, a lonely eight year-old girl from the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max Horovitz, a 44 year-old, obese Jewish man with Asperger’s syndrome in New York. Over 20 years and two continents, Mary and Max takes you on a journey which explores friendship, taxidermy, obesity, kleptomania, copulating dogs, and much more...

I’m delighted that after a long, a very long wait, it’s finally my staff pick. Aside from the stunning performances from a top class cast, the unpredictable interweaving storyline, and an ending to top that of The Usual Suspects, my main reason for loving this so much is the outstanding Golden Globe winning performance from Tom Cruise. As the misogynistic TJ, he blows out of the water all pre-conceived notions I ever had of him. Don’t take my word for it – just get your ticket! Teresa Bendoris, Marketing Officer.
