“I’ve learned that people will forget what you did, they will forget what you said but they will not forget how you made them feel.” MAYA ANGELOU I love this quote from Maya Angelou. I’ve placed it here at the beginning of our new brochure because over my first six months at Eden Court we’ve been doing lots of thinking about why we’re here; what Eden Court achieves and who it’s for. Everything we present on our stages, screen in our cinemas, hang in our galleries or deliver in our projects will elicit feelings. We’re proud of that and proud that Eden Court is a place to see the world differently, through other people’s eyes and other people’s feelings. You’ll already have noticed this brochure looks and feels very different. We’re presenting to you here a six-month season. By reducing the number of brochures we produce from three per year to two we will make significant savings on design, print and postage. I’m incredibly proud of my colleagues who have worked so hard on this new look and on this new approach to programming. We have also changed how we lay out the brochure. I have taken the decision to no longer divide the brochure by genre. I don’t think it’s right to pigeon-hole our audiences, artists and shows. Many of the shows we present straddle genres so instead we have laid the brochure out in chronological order with our highlights for the month presented at the beginning of each section. There is more information on the other

art forms here at Eden Court and a sneak-peak of some other shows coming-up later in 2019. This look and feel will move online through the Autumn and we’ll be launching a brand-new website that will radically improve your online experience soon. There is so much I am looking forward to over the coming months. In October be sure not to miss the international dance sensations The Trocks. In November we’re delighted to welcome back the National Theatre of Scotland to the Empire stage with their retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac and do join us at the now nationally renowned Inverness Film Festival. Over the festive season there’s something for everyone from Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Lamp, Scottish Ensemble’s Advent Concert at the Cathedral and Scottish Ballet’s sumptuous Cinderella. In February the critically acclaimed tour of Fame lands in Inverness and we’re honoured to be presenting a season of work by the UK’s national contemporary dance company Rambert. We conclude the season in March with two exceptional, and utterly unique, productions that give a flavour of where I want our programme to head. Firstly, I’m thrilled we’re presenting Touching the Void a brand new adaptation of the best-selling memoir and BAFTA award-winning film adapted by one of Scotland’s leading playwrights David Greig and directed by Tom Morris who made the internationally-acclaimed stage adaptation of War Horse. At the end of March, a total-first – I’m delighted to announce Scottish Ballet will launch their 50th Anniversary celebrations here in Inverness. This is a thrill and an honour for us and we can’t wait to share more information with you soon. I really hope you like the new brochure. As ever, do let me know what you think. Thank you for your continued support.

Haydn Symphony No. 82 ‘The Bear’ Haydn Oboe Concerto Schubert arr Webern Deutsche Tänze Brahms Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn François Leleux conductor / oboe

Pre-Performance Talk Saturday 06 at 18.45

Joseph Haydn delighted Parisian audiences with the country carnival atmosphere of his Symphony No 82. Likewise, Anton Webern had a lot of fun with his witty orchestral reimagining of six spirited German Dances by Schubert. Scholarship suggests that the C Major Oboe Concerto may not be by Haydn, but its singing melodies and fizzing exuberance are the ideal match for Leleux’s animated playing all the same. He closes with the endless melodic inventiveness of Brahms’ ‘St Anthony’ Variations.

Cyrano de Bergerac NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND, CITIZENS THEATRE AND ROYAL LYCEUM THEATRE EDINBURGH CO-PRODUCTION

HIGHLIGHTS

Wed 07 - Sat 10 Love. War. And Noses. The hugely romantic Cyrano de Bergerac is given a Caledonian heart in a new production of Edwin Morgan’s Glaswegian-Scots translation by Citizens Theatre Artistic Director Dominic Hill. Brian Ferguson plays the irresistible Cyrano de Bergerac, with breathtaking set design by Tom Piper and costumes from the iconic British fashion designer Pam Hogg. The brash and flamboyant Cyrano’s low selfimage prevents him from revealing his love for Roxanne. He lends his poetic skills instead to the outwardly handsome Christian, who wins Roxanne’s heart through his passionate ghostwritten letters. Throughout his adventurous life, Cyrano continues to put quill to parchment, risking his life in the process, to express his true feelings. A fresh take with a dash of panache on the enduringly popular period piece, first seen in the classic production by Communicado 25 years ago which premiered at Eden Court. Contains strong language. Scottish Opera: Rigoletto Tue 20 + Thu 22 + Sat 24

Award-winning director Matthew Richardson (The Devil Inside 2016) and Olivier Award-winning designer Jon Morrell revive their powerful production of Verdi’s masterpiece. Set in a dark and dangerous underworld where cruelty and inhumanity are rife – and women are objects merely played with and discarded – Rigoletto tells a tragic tale of seduction, revenge and a father’s suffocating love for this only daughter. Verdi’s score illuminates this darkness with some of the bestloved music in opera: from the aching naivety of Gilda’s first love to the rousing and unforgettable ‘La donna è mobile’. Internationally-acclaimed baritone Aris Argiris heads up a cast of exciting talent including Lina Johnson, much-praised for her Gilda in Trieste in 2016, and award-winning British tenor Adam Smith. Eden Court welcomes children of all ages, unless the performance has a specific age restriction. Children of ten years and over are welcome to attend unaccompanied, but parents should note that the responsibility for their children’s safety and wellbeing remains theirs and that we will take no more responsibility for children than for any other members of the audience. Any member of the audience (including children) will be required to leave if their behaviour is disturbing for other patrons. Babies will not be admitted to any performances where Eden Court judges that crying could disturb other audience members.

PAYMENT METHODS Payments can be made by cash, cheque (made payable to Eden Court), Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Visa Debit Cards or Eden Court Gift Vouchers. Payment can be made in person, by phone or by post. Please note that we do not currently accept American Express Maestro for payment online.
