EDEN COURT BROCHURE SUPPORTED BY:
Welcome to the Summer Season at Eden Court
Featured on the front cover: Ballet Black - Double Bill – page 11 (photography by ASH)
Over the coming months the building will be alive with world-class musical theatre, dance, drama, music and film. As you may have seen in the local press earlier this year Eden Court suffered an annual £200,000 cut to our funding from Creative Scotland and a £200,000 cut to our funding from the Highland Council. Over the last few weeks I have been working incredibly closely with colleagues at Eden Court, and at Creative Scotland and the Highland Council to understand why these cuts were made and how we can do our very best to protect the quality of our programme. These conversations are ongoing. These cuts do though mean, now more than ever before, that we need your support. Firstly, we need you to keep coming to Eden Court, but we would also be incredibly grateful if you would consider making a donation to us. If you could become a regular giver that would enable us to have more security to plan for the future. More information about how to support us can be found on the opposite page.
Many of you have called and written to tell us about problems with using our new website. Please be assured we have been listening and over the coming months we will embark on a project to improve the functionality and navigation so it’s easier to find information and book tickets. I am sorry this has not been an easy transition. I’m committed to sorting it out for you all by September. I wanted to share with you all a little more about me. I’ve spent my whole career working in theatre and dance. I first came to Eden Court in 2008, not long after it re-opened. I fell in love with it then and visited again in 2014 when I got to know the organisation a little better. When I saw the news that Colin Marr was moving on I knew that I was going to do my very best to get the job: and here I am! I’m moving to the Highlands with my Scottish husband and our two sons. We will be making a life for ourselves here in this thriving city and stunning region. The success of Eden Court is dependent on the special relationship between myself, all our wonderful staff, the artists who come here and all of you as our

audience and supporters. I want to build on all the exceptional achievements of Colin Marr and help Eden Court to grow – that’s why, with my team, we are working now on a plan to prepare for Eden Court’s 50th anniversary in 2026. That may seem some time away but we have ambitious plans to ensure that Eden Court is able to deliver to you world-class arts and cultural experiences in a modern building for 50 years beyond that special birthday. As our plans develop we will let you know. The rich variety of our programme at Eden Court is so special. This season I’m particularly looking forward to the Double Bill from Ballet Black, a fantastic company who I have seen perform many times. If you enjoy other aspects of our dance programme please do come along and support Ballet Black. There is plenty for your wee ones to enjoy from Bing, Peppa Pig to the Dinosaur Safari and of course don’t forget to book early for our wonderful pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. Wind Resistance, starring Karine Polwart, is guaranteed to be a wonderful evening of drama and of course Scottish Opera’s Eugene Onegin will be a sensory feast. I will personally be trying to see as much as I can over the coming months. If you see me around the building, or in our auditoriums, please do say hello. Below is my email address; you can also find me on Twitter. Feel free to get in touch - I’d love to hear from you.

These photos are NOT of Elvis! STEVE MICHAELS really does look that good! His masterful renditions of The King and his music have garnered him worldwide fame, and appearances alongside the extraordinary Jordanaires and the Sweet Inspirations as well as Elvis’s legendary drummer DJ Fontana and bassist Jerry Scheff. It’s 1968 - the major musical event of the year is the first live TV special for Elvis Presley in what would come to be known as The ‘68 Comeback Special. Drawing phenomenal ratings, this event reestablishes Elvis as the major entertainment star of the decade, and twelve months later Elvis stars at the International Hotel in Vegas, performing live for the first time in seven years, and securing his place in history as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll! This production celebrates 50 years since the TV phenomenon and is testament that his songs live on and the King still rules!

Often known as the Father of the Symphony, Haydn’s 49th Symphony has deeply impressed the musical world plus the SCO also share an intimate musical love letter with Wagner's wonderfully poetic Siegfried Idyll and the evening is completed with Mendelssohn's virtuosic and energetic representation of Italy. Supported by The Alexander Gibson Circle and Scottish Opera’s ‘Play a Supporting Role’ Appeal Tchaikovsky and Pushkin: two of Russia’s greatest artists come together in this sweeping tale of unfulfilled love. A lovesick girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends. Pushkin’s epic romance is relocated to pre-revolutionary Russia, as an aged Tatyana looks back on the ghosts of her adolescence and the one great love of her life: the enigmatic Eugene Onegin. In this mesmerising new production, director Oliver Mears (Director of Opera, The Royal Opera) teams up with award-winning designer Annemarie Woods and choreographer Ashley Page (former Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet) to set this hopelessly romantic opera in a world full of memories and dreams, where the past is ever present. Tchaikovsky’s soaring score, not heard on Scottish Opera’s main stage since 1993, is the most radiant of Russian lyric operas. Natalya Romaniw (Rusalka 2016) sings Tatyana. Samuel Dale Johnson (The Marriage of Figaro 2016) is Onegin. Scottish Opera Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts. Sung in Russian with English supertitles.

We loved Patrick Monahan when he was last here with the Happyness comedy festival and we’re delighted to welcome him back with his brand new stand up show inspired by his Irish/Iranian/Teesside teens in the 90s. 'Cool Britannia', drink and drugs were some of the trademarks of the 1990's but for the teetotal and drug free Monahan it was 'cake and tea and R 'n' B!' 2018 sees The Blues Band Celebrate their 39th year together!
Many of The Blues Band’s 21st century fans weren’t even born when Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Tom McGuinness, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher, already music industry veterans, decided to fly in the face of musical fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’. No one could have predicted that, 39 years on, they would still be dazzling audiences with their showmanship and virtuosity. About 20 albums and thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation around the world as one of the finest exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms. With this line-up, it’s hardly surprising.

Stravaigin’ by Colin Campbell 30 APR- 9 JUN In old Scots, ‘If you embarked upon ‘a stravaig’ you’d have a wander through glens and over hills with no set purpose other than to enjoy the walking’. Colin’s work places great care on both form and composition and explores those hidden landscapes, either found or suggested from, some aimless wanderings.
WildFires presents work by three women who explore what it is to be young. Flannery O’Kafka documents the profound physicality and mystery of heredity, while Sarah Amy Fishlock examines her father’s life after death. A resonant celebration of youth with its fleeting darkness’s and deep joys.
Osborne explores time, space, light and form in photography. Temporary sculptural constructions are made from common materials which are photographed using controlled lighting to produce images that are familiar, yet fictional and anonymous. His work asks questions of what is being seen, how things might appear and how we negotiate, interpret and give meaning.
