Welcome

Inverness Book Festival 2014

to the 10th Inverness Book Festival, the second in association with Sandstone Press. We have a great line up this year with our subjects ranging from the Antarctic with Gavin Francis to 20th Century Ireland with Man Booker shortlisted Sebastian Barry. We have Tartan Noir with Louise Welsh and Doug Johnstone and we visit 1970s Chicago and beyond with Bonnie Greer. The timing of the festival lends itself perfectly to delve into the independence referendum debate with Robert Crawford and Iain MacWhirter. Our agent-in-residence this year is Isobel Dixon of Blake Friedmann. As well as being an agent, Isobel is also an accomplished and much published poet. For the first time we will be hosting an evening of Gaelic language books, organised by the Gaelic Books Council and two important events for young readers sponsored by Publishing Scotland. Plus, we have the No 1 international bestselling author Kate Mosse joining us at the Big Book Group event. I hope you are as excited as I am by the terrific programme of events we have on offer. I look forward to seeing you at Eden Court for another fantastic festival.

Douglas Thompson’s short stories have appeared in a wide range of magazines and anthologies. His first book, Ultrameta, was published by Eibonvale Press in August 2009, nominated for the Edge Hill Prize and shortlisted for the British Fantasy Society Best Newcomer Award. Since then he has published four subsequent novels. The Brahan Seer is his sixth novel. Executed at Chanonry Point, Fortrose, for witchcraft in the late 17th century, the shadowy historical figure of the Brahan Seer foretold the Battle of Culloden, the invention of the railways and canals, the Second World War and even the creation of the Channel Tunnel. Described by Thompson himself as a historical literary novel (with supernatural overtones) this fascinating book begins to question whether our current understanding of time is quite as safe and scientifically sound as we think it is... Douglas will be interviewed by Inverness based journalist and broadcaster Roddy Maclean.

Free readings from two exciting talents – hosted by Chris Powici, editor of Northwords Now, the free literary magazine for the North. John Glenday is one of Scotland's finest poets. His most recent collection, Grain, won accolades from across the country and overseas, including Canada's Griffin Prize for work that is earthly, full of rivers and hills and islands, but where old ideas like 'love' and 'soul' have not been banished. Jared A. Carnie is an exciting new poetic talent from the Isle of Lewis. His poetry is rooted in a sense of place and people and finds expression in a voice that is funny, passionate, modern and vivid. (Jared's appearance at the festival is supported by Emergents – dedicated to supporting the development of creative careers, enterprise and the economy in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and beyond.)

While working as base camp doctor at the Halley research station in Antarctica, writer, physician and author Gavin Francis penned his latest book, Empire Antarctica: Ice, Silence & Emperor Penguins. The Halley research centre, where Gavin worked is said to be so remote that it’s easier to evacuate a casualty from the International Space Station than it is to bring someone out of Halley in winter! This story of one man’s fascination with the world's loneliest continent, as well as the emperor penguins who weather the winter with him, is truly captivating. The embodiment of everything I admire in travel writing. I loved this book. PAUL THEROUX Interviewing Gavin will be the author of Walking and Cycling in Inverness and the Highlands and popular Scottish Provincial Press outdoor writer, John Davidson.

Reading and Snobbery SGL Board Room I Thu 21 Aug I 16.30

Free But Ticketed I www.invernessbookfestival.co.uk Picking up from author Matthew Haig's 30 things to tell a book snob in his 2013 blog, Julie Simmons and Mark Richardson invite you to join us for a light hearted and liberating look at what we read and why. Matthew’s original blog said, One of the reasons people are put off reading is snobbery. You know, the snobbery that says opera and lacrosse and Pinot Noir and jazz fusion and quails' eggs and literary fiction are for certain types of people and them alone? There is something innately snobby about the world of books. There is the snobbery of literary over genre, of adult books over children’s, of seriousness over comedy, of reality over fantasy, of Martin Amis over Stephen King. And it is unhealthy. If books ever die, snobbery would be standing over the corpse. To read Matthew’s blog visit: http://bit.ly/1l3xqVi

Beginning with the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, when the Scots defeated the English and continuing up to the present day, Robert Crawford’s Bannockburns explores the literary-cultural background to Scottish nationalism in the lead-up to the independence referendum. Robert examines how writers have set out in poetry, fiction, plays and on film the ideal of Scottish independence. This is the only book to set out in full what Scottish independence has meant in literature and it shows how, even after 700 years, the Battle of Bannockburn remains a key reference point. From her early years in segregated, racist Chicago to the months in New York City that would lead to her first steps on British soil, award-winning playwright, author and critic Bonnie Greer’s biography, A Parallel Life, is compelling, eye-opening and an exquisite testament to one woman’s strength, determination and pride. Standing on the corner of Michigan Avenue, in the middle of the biggest blizzard of the decade and at the height of the rush hour, I yelled into the driving snow and howling Arctic wind: ‘OK! After playing the role of good daughter, great sister, best friend, girlfriend in the background, and black student warrior, what else? Because there is something else. Now, Miss Greer, you must finally face it – ‘cause you have run out of road. The curtain is about to come down. They’re packin’ up and goin’ home, baby!’ It was time to leave Chicago. Bonnie will be interviewed by Collette Douglas-Home, the popular and hard hitting columnist from The Herald.
