welcome
... TO SPRING 2013 WITH EDEN COURT CREATIVE! Firstly I’d like to thank every one of you who was involved in an Eden Court CREATIVE project in 2012. It was an incredibly busy year for us and we couldn’t have done it without your help and enthusiasm! Whether you were learning to Salsa on Skye; laughing at Punch and Judy at Belladrum; scaring away the ghosts and ghouls on the Ness Islands at Hallowe’en; or joined our Young Dance Company’s routine at London St. Pancras as part of Big Dance 2012, your participation is what makes events like these fun and rewarding. 2013 is shaping up to be another fantastic year for the Highlands, with plenty of opportunities to get involved with our regular classes, activities delivered by your CREATIVE Worker In Your Area, or large scale events and festivals. We’re hosting the National Theatre’s Connections 2013 Festival from 02–04 April (p22), planning a Haggis Lich’ Nicht for Burns Night (p6), and getting together our brand new Community Dance Company (p6). We’re also working with our brand new Eden Court CREATIVE Ambassadors. These are young people from secondary schools in Highland, who promote the arts and encourage their local community to get involved in performances at Eden Court and in their local area. For the first time we’re also offering a Student Discount on all our adult classes this term so students should check out all the offers and get involved! Our SQA course applications are now open, giving you the chance to study Higher Dance and Higher or Intermediate 2 Drama. For anyone thinking of pursuing a career in the arts, or for those who just want to try something different next year at school, it’s the perfect opportunity to learn highly valuable skills and meet like minded people. New classes this term include Ballet for 13–17 yrs (p12) and a host of new singing classes: Eden Court Contemporary Voices (p17), Eden Court Rainbow Voices (p18) and an Eden Court Young Voices (p13) for 9-17 yr olds. We’re sure you’ll find something to take your fancy, no matter what you’re into. Come on–get Creative!
Kati Kozikowska, Eden Court Creative Manager “As the Ambassador for Eden Court CREATIVE, I am hugely proud to be part of something that provides so many great opportunities for studying theatre, dance and film-making in the Highlands. I did a lot of my initial training at Eden Court, including my Higher Drama and my LAMDA (London Academy of Dramatic Arts) certification. The tutors were always there to support me. I had my first real experience of acting via Eden Court CREATIVE and it was their knowledge and experience that encouraged me to take the next step and pursue a career in the arts. Eden Court CREATIVE is a great resource for everyone in the Highlands both young and old. If you haven’t tried it yet, start participating and get Creative–you never know where it might lead.” EDEN COURT CREATIVE’S AMBASSADOR AND FORMER STUDENT, KAREN GILLAN All photography of class participants and staff: Ewen Wetherspoon www.ewphoto.co.uk

Eden Court Young Dance Company (ECYDC)
Eden Court Young Company (ECYC)
Why did you want to join ECYDC? ECYDC looked like a great opportunity to meet new dancers, improve and develop my dance techniques and skills, to become a more confident dancer and to learn about different styles of dance. Also the chance to take part in workshops and shows throughout Scotland makes it even better!
Why did you want to join ECYC? I wanted to join ECYC to broaden my acting skills, work with different people, have new experiences in the acting world and perform a play I had helped to write in front of a wider audience.
What do you enjoy about working with the Company? I enjoy working with good dancers that love to dance to produce high quality pieces. By the end of the year you feel like you are part of one big, happy, dancing family. Overall everything in the company is enjoyable! What kind of challenges have you had to experience as a member? I had to push myself, mentally and physically, to show I was worthy of a place in the Company and also not being afraid to make mistakes as you can learn from them. What has been your favourite moment as a member of ECYDC? Taking part in the Scottish Platform event in Stirling was one of my favourite moments of ECYDC. We had the opportunity to perform our dance routine to nearly 500 people and had the chance to watch other groups perform. Another one of my favourite moments was going down to the Scottish Connections weekend in Glasgow to take part in many different workshops. We got to work with lots of different choreographers such as Mark Brew, SDT and Scottish Ballet. What other opportunities does Eden Court offer you? As I attend regular classes at Eden Court I got offered a place to go to London to dance in the Big Dance launch on the 05 July 2012. It was an AMAZING experience!
What do you enjoy about working with the Company? I enjoy meeting new people that I otherwise wouldn’t have met and going places that otherwise would still be unknown to me, for instance the National Festival of Youth Theatre (NFYT) in Glenrothes. I’ve had so many amazing experiences through ECYC that I just wouldn’t have had the chance to do otherwise, like taking part in workshops, helping to write a play and putting up a tent in the dark past midnight! What kind of challenges have you had to experience as a member? As a member, I have had to learn lines quickly–my record is two days for a whole play, acclimatize to new situations, be able to try my hand at very diverse types of theatre and really think outside the box on a number of occasions. My biggest challenge has to have been writing and performing a “real life” monologue about my little brother–when I’m acting I’m much more used to being “other people” than being myself! What has been your favourite moment as a member of ECYC? I’ve had so many fantastic moments through ECYC that it’s impossible to choose just one! However, the ones that stand out are having Happy Birthday sung to me in the middle of NFYT, the first ever run through of our play,‘You Can’t Tell By Looking’, in front of our parents before we showcased it at NFYT, and standing on stage at NFYT at the very end of the play, thinking,“Yes, this is what we set out to do.” What other opportunities does Eden Court offer you? Eden Court offers me so many amazing opportunities, like their drama courses such as the LAMDA classes, their outdoor performances such as the Ness Islands Halloween performances, the ability to meet like-minded people and the opportunity to develop skills and to be part of so many diverse performances, clubs and classes. page 5

meet the creative team Hayley Savage Accessible Arts Worker & Creative Arts Worker for Wester Ross There’s never a dull moment when Hayley’s around. Well known as the ‘Props Queen’ of the Team, it’s not surprising to find her with an inflatable T-Rex under her arm, or leading a group of budding young actors out into all weathers in the name of a luminous giant cockroach! Hayley is also our resident Harry Potter expert, and will be first on her broom for all witchcraft and wizardry related goings on here at Eden Court! Hayley’s been very busy this past term with lots of new activities, in particular our new youth club for young people on the autistic spectrum, The Hub (p20). You can find out more about Hayley’s work in the Wester Ross area or her work with young people with additional support needs throughout the Highlands by emailing her: hsavage@eden-court.co.uk. What do you like most about your job? The thing I love the most about my job is the sheer variety of activities that I get to do during a typical week. You might catch me on location filming a version of Lord of the Rings one minute or up to my elbows in papier-mâché constructing a rubber duck the next! The people that I meet and work with have such a capacity for fun that I spend most of my work time laughing and enjoying myself. I really love feeling like I’ve made a difference to someone's day, even if it is just a joke shared or an experience gained. My job can be anything and everything ...except boring! What’s the most difficult thing about your job? A job like mine does have its challenges. Finding the time to plan such a diverse programme of activities and workshops, across such a wide range of different needs every week, often leaves me wishing that I had a time turner like Hermione Granger. My main challenge is that there are just not enough hours in a day! What events are you looking forward to? Well, the big news of the term has definitely been the success of The Hub, our youth club for teenagers on the autistic spectrum. We are delighted to have the support of the National Autistic Society for this group and hope that with their partnership we will see The Hub develop in to an even better social group. Also in the pipeline at the moment are two BIG projects for me. I have been very busy over the past half term ironing out the details for a new touring project, Fungus Humungous, an interactive theatrical play experience which I am in the process of seeking funding for. Also I have started to plan Eden Court’s first Accessible Arts Festival, which is shaping up to be awesome! It’s early days yet on both of these projects but, as they say...‘watch this space’! page 14

£32.40 I NINE WEEK TERM I CLASS PRICE: £4.60 Children just love to sing, especially those who find it challenging to express themselves in other ways. Singing is such an inherent part of our heart and soul expression. It helps personal development, self confidence and frees blocked emotions. Singing reduces aggression by calming nerves and reducing blood pressure. Good breath control in singing uses the full energy of the body and literally tones it up! In this class we allow our kids to sing in total freedom, develop a healthy vocal sound and have fun as they express themselves. Vocal technique will be taught as we sing a wide variety of songs and have fun.

SAT 02 MAR I SUN 10 & SUN 17 MAR FRI 05–WED 10 APR Scottish Ballet, in conjunction with Forestry Commission Scotland, Eden Court and regional artists, would like to invite up to thirty people from community dance groups to join the “Hansel & Gretel, and Me” project in Spring 2013.
