ONE HOT SUMMER
EDEN COURT THEATRE MAY – AUGUST 2010
WELCOME To your brand new Eden Court brochure. I am delighted by the summer programme we’ve put together for you. In the following pages, you will find the type of shows and events that you have come to expect from Eden Court, and a few special surprises. Summer is a time when many theatres are quieter than usual, but that is certainly not the case at Eden Court. At the very beginning of May, we will welcome Mark Beaumont, The Man Who Cycled the World (P04) to tell us about his epic round the world bike ride. Later in the month, Scottish Opera bring not only the sublime contemporary interpretation of Puccini’s la Boheme, but also a brand new production of Katya Kabanova (P16 & 17). Look out for the wonderful Nadine Livingston as Musetta in la Boheme – she is without doubt one of the opera stars of the future. There’s a current trend for stage adaptations of ‘big screen’ films, and we have one of the best of the bunch in the shape of When Harry Met Sally (P06 & 07). We also have a major coup for Inverness, as the iconic Calendar Girls makes its first ever visit to the Highlands (P22 – P23). This amazing show has a fantastic cast, among them Elaine C. Smith and Ruth Madoc. I expect tickets to sell out in record time. Don’t miss out. We will welcome the National Theatre of Scotland back to Inverness with two quite different productions. In the 150th year since it was written, NTS bring us a fantastic new version of JM Barrie’s timeless tale of the boy who never grew up – Peter Pan. Directed by the Oliver Award winning Black Watch director, John Tiffany, and written by the brilliant David Greig, it is a show for the whole family, and it will be quite unforgettable. Two years on from 365, NTS will once again use Eden Court as the creative home for their brand new Edinburgh International Festival production, Caledonia (P21). They’ll make the show here before it goes to Edinburgh, so Inverness audiences will once more be the first to see what is sure to be one of the hits of this year’s Edinburgh Festival. Last, but by no means least – the return of one of the most successful and critically acclaimed shows to grace the Empire Theatre in recent years; Sunshine On Leith will join us for a week in September (P12 – P13) and is sure to be one of the highlights of the year. We were inundated with requests to bring the show back, so I hope that you’ll be as happy as I am to have the chance to catch up with Davy and Ally’s adventures. It’s going to be a hot summer – make sure you spend it here at Eden Court.

Sometimes words are just not enough… Experience Romeo and Juliet as you never have before. Fresh from their near sell-out of The Nutcracker, Scotland’s national ballet company returns to Eden Court with a powerful modern re-interpretation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This beautiful version of Romeo & Juliet was created for Scottish Ballet by award-winning choreographer Krzysztof Pastor in 2008, and captivated critics and audiences alike. Set in 20th century Italy, this is Romeo and Juliet as you’ve never seen it before, with striking sets featuring film footage, costumes that capture the cool elegance of Italian design and unforgettable, passionate performances from Scottish Ballet’s phenomenally talented dancers. Sergei Prokofiev’s dramatic score, including Dance of the Knights which has recently been made famous as the theme tune for The Apprentice, will be performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Don’t miss this chance to experience this must-see production. www.scottishballet.co.uk

One of the most popular shows in Eden Court’s recent history returns for a more than welcome second run in its highland home. Sunshine on Leith is the hilarious, compelling, touching and stirring tale of Davy and Ally – two childhood who return home to Edinburgh after their tour of duty in Afghanistan. It soon becomes clear that the trials and tribulations of families, relationships and life in sunny Leith are definitely not plain sailing, and that the ups and downs of life in civvy street present their own unique challenges. Sunshine is a product of the hugely successful and supremely talented Stephen Greenhorn (creator of River City and Passing Places) – it’s a true Scottish stage gem which remains unsurpassed in its style, sparkle and sensitivity. This truly exceptional love story is more than just a musical, it’s a wonderfully resonant examination of the life and times of a modern Scottish family. Sunshine on Leith is a dazzling display of live music, dance and drama which seamlessly blends the very best Proclaimers’ hits I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), I’m on My Way and Letter from America into the narrative of this unforgettable show. Sunshine On Leith all but sold out last time – don’t miss this return visit… We can’t promise to bring it back a third time!

At a time when dance has never been hotter, this is as hot as it gets! EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS
2010 sees the re-launch of The Space Cadets, the graduate dance company based at The Space, Dundee (home of the Scottish School of Contemporary Dance). With a highly adept cast, a national tour and a diverse range of choreographers, this young company is initiating a full-throttle attack on dance audiences. In previous years, the company has become well known for its stimulating theatricality and highly emotive works by some of the most exciting and interesting, new and established choreographers alike. These have included Filip Van Huffel, Victoria Fox, Thomas Small and Vanessa Haska. Co-Artistic Director of New Art Club, Pete Shenton, is creating a brand new work for the company, and the tour will see pieces from Errol White and Matthew Robinson
YDance brings together the best young dancers that Scotland has to offer, presenting an exciting programme of new contemporary dance work across the country. Last year’s visit saw a near sell-out audience treated to a razor sharp showcase of young dance talent. This year, prepare for pieces from choreographers like Andy Howitt and Errol White. Ever been young, poor and in love? When Mimi and Rodolfo meet, they fall hopelessly for each other but the course of true love rarely runs smoothly and Puccini’s passionate and evocative music carries them from heart-stopping romance to heart-breaking loss as their story tumbles towards its conclusion. It’s a familiar tale and one that rings true in any era. Tony awardwinning Director Stewart Laing updates the action to the modern art scene of 21st century New York - as young, penniless artists, Mimi and Rodolfo, along with their friends Marcello and his flamboyant sweetheart Musetta, scrape a living together selling their work. The vibrant characters stand out all the more for the drab reality of their lives; their dreams of riches too easily lost in the chaos of the city that never sleeps… La boheme is one of the world’s favourite operas for good reason and has inspired a generation of love stories, most recently Moulin Rouge. From Rodolpho’s tender singing of ‘Your tiny hand is frozen’ to Musetta’s provocative and fiery waltz, and the beautifully guileless ‘They call me Mimi’ it perfectly captures the passion, and the pain, of being young, poor, and in love. Sung in Italian with English supertitles Running time approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. www.scottishopera.org.uk

Roghainn na Daoine intertwines two powerful stories, one of a young Island woman’s struggle with matters of principal and living with the choices she has made, the other follows the desperate social and political circumstances which provoked the emergence of a new spirituality-based belief system in the 1840’s which has resonance today.
Haggis McSporran left the Highlands to become the king of comedy. Now he’s coming home for an interview on Jacobite Radio with his old pal Craitur Face Macleod, a proper celebrity interview with a proper celebrity, and a chance to catch up with the man he first met all those years ago ( when Uncle Angus was invading England, when together they escaped Craig Dunain mental hospital, met the Loch Ness Monster and tried to cure cancer with Granny and her Shetland ponies).
NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND AND EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
CALEDONIA (PREVIEW PERFORMANCES) FRI 13, SAT 14 & MON 16 AUG 2010 | 20.00 EMPIRE THEATRE By Alistair Beaton Directed by Anthony Neilson William Paterson was a financial adventurer who devised one of the most daring and disastrous speculations of all time. His plan - to found a Scottish colony on Darien in Central America and turn Scotland, one of the poorest nations in Europe, into an imperial power. He invited the public to invest. And they did – in a big way. Within weeks a vast proportion of the nation’s wealth had been subscribed. What went so wrong that, within a few years, the Scots – demoralised and impoverished - gave up their nation’s independent status and signed the 1707 Treaty of Union with England? Inspired by documents, journals, letters, songs and poems of the period, celebrated playwright and satirist Alistair Beaton has created a work that is both a tribute to heroic ambition and a darkly witty take on the deceptions and selfdeceptions of rich and poor alike. Caledonia is directed by Anthony Neilson, the Scottish writer/director whose awardwinning work for the Edinburgh International Festival has included the National Theatre of Scotland’s Realism and The Wonderful World of Dissocia.

THE BAGPIPE AND HIGHLAND CULTURE SAT 22 MAY | 11.30 MACLEAN ROOM Friends of Highland Music presents its third Spring Lecture, this year with Allan Macdonald, renowned exponent of the bagpipes, who will give a presentation on the unique place of the bagpipe within Highland culture. Allan was raised in the isolated Gaelic speaking community of Glenuig, Moidart, on the West Coast of Scotland. He started learning pipes aged 8 and was tutored at Queen Victoria School, Dunblane. He followed the competitive route, winning the major awards, especially in Piobaireachd, while retaining an antipathy to the competitive scene. However, he became increasingly aware of the hiatus between the pibroch music played today and other music and songs in the Gaelic tradition. The essence of his research at Edinburgh University was the identification of the lyrical nature of piobaireachd in performance style; one that had been lost through divorce from its cultural context and increasing dependence on written music.

CAN’T SEE THE WOOD FOR THE TREES THU 10 JUN | 19.00 ONETOUCH THEATRE
by John Batty & Bryan Beattie Join the participants from Eden Court’s Adult Drama Lab as they tell the epic tale of Cu Chulainn, the Irish mythological hero, who having killed the King of Ulster's guardian hound, offers to take its place in defence of the realm until a replacement can be found. At the age of seventeen he defended Ulster single-handedly against the armies of queen Medb of Connacht in the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge. A tale much darker than Macbeth played in a ‘Carry On’ style, with ensemble physical-theatre acting from the theatre's adult acting class!
If you were a bird, in which tree would you make your nest? If you could plant a tree, who would it be in memory of and why? Collections of stories, movements and memories around trees. An exciting and innovative performance by Eden Court Theatre Young Company. Join young theatre-makers from across the Highlands as they present a brand new piece of contemporary theatre, which is Eden Court’s entry into this year’s National Theatre of Scotland Exchange programme. Exchange is the National Theatre of Scotland’s nationwide youth theatre, which unites young theatre-makers from across Scotland and beyond. Youth theatres create a new piece of quality contemporary theatre that is devised and performed entirely by the groups themselves. Each piece of theatre is then performed as part of the Exchange festival week, which will take place at the Byre Theatre in July. www.nationaltheatrescotland.com
