a three year period over 70% of the population of the Highlands attended a ticketed event here. When you combine these ticket sales with our conference business we make an estimated economic contribution to the Highlands of over £6 million.
As you may know, I normally use this opportunity to talk in a little more depth about my own particular highlights of the coming season. However, this time round I’d like to tell you some interesting facts about Eden Court – things we should all collectively be proud of.
W
elcome to a new season of entertainment at Eden Court. As ever, we have a fantastic line-up of dance, family events, drama, music, comedy and more.
A few weeks prior to this brochure being printed we held a showcase event here at Eden Court to highlight the incredible work our CREATIVE department do. Although the response was overwhelmingly positive it confirmed our suspicions that we’ve not been shouting loud enough about our achievements. Many of those who attended already knew that we ran over 60 classes and activities every week at Eden Court. Equally, they were aware that we offered courses in Higher Dance, Higher
There’s probably a lot you already know about Eden Court and the fact that you’re reading this most likely means that you come here regularly. It also means that you bought one (or more) of the 160,000 theatre tickets we sold last year. That’s a really impressive number and means that relative to the size of our population, we are the best attended theatre in the UK. It’s testament to the great programme of theatre and cinema on offer that over Eden Court is supported by:

Drama and LAMDA (London Academy of Dramatic Art). But most people who were at the showcase event were unaware that Eden Court CREATIVE runs the largest creative learning programme of any UK theatre. Indeed, they were genuinely gobsmacked by the positive impact our CREATIVE department is having in communities throughout the Highlands. It’s no exaggeration to say we are transforming lives through creativity. There’s not anywhere near enough room here to even scratch the surface of what CREATIVE do but if you’d like to know more please contact creative@eden-court.co.uk Have a great summer! Dance meets drama with powerful effect in Scottish Ballet’s iconic and vivid reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s greatest love story. Choreographer Krzysztof Pastor (Polish National Ballet) has created a Romeo and Juliet for Scottish Ballet as timeless as love itself; set against a dramatic multimedia backdrop, his story of star-crossed lovers spans three decades of Italian life. A classic. A landmark. A legend. The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre - with over 25,000 performances it’s a play to be proud of. And to celebrate 60 incredible years on stage, it’s going on tour for the first time, to give you a once in a life-time opportunity to see this masterpiece here at Eden Court. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner. www.mousetrapontour.com

A co-production between Rapture Theatre and Mull Theatre What happens when the rock and roll of swinging sixties London collides with the rock and moss of remote Scotland? Sandy Sheridan: pretentious art critic and self proclaimed cultural icon returns from London and home to his Scottish country pile – with his new, much younger, wife in tow. Waiting for him are his stoical daughter Shona and his acerbic exbrother in law: Uncle Varick. Uncle Varick is John Byrne’s (author of Tutti Frutti and The Slab Boys) moving yet humorous adaptation of Chekov’s classic Uncle Vanya, relocated to 1960’s rural Scotland. Scottish theatre legend, Jimmy Chisholm (Para Handy) leads a cast of great Scottish performers including Dave Anderson, John Stahl, Maureen Carr and Ashley Smith.
By Clare Duffy
By Justin Young Gaelic by Iain F Macleod Directed by Philip Howard Design by Fiona Watt Lighting by Grant Anderson Music by Jon Beales In an old wooden house by the shore of Lake Ontario in Canada, Louis battles with his elderly father, Don, whose decline into dementia is gradually robbing him of the ability to speak. Louis’ professional success as a university teacher of Classics belies an emotional inarticulacy which matches his father’s inability to express himself in words.
Before the financial crisis of 2008, Casino and Queenie were hedge fund managers. Now, in an inspired – or desperate – career move, they’ve turned to performance art to share their stories of how to make (and lose) billions from economic downturn. Playing with £10,000 in real pound coins, you are invited to bet long, short and hedge as Casino and Queenie guide you through high stake games, demonstrating how the world’s economic system came to the brink of collapse.
Into their lives comes Flora, the carer that Louis employs to look after Don. Flora is of Scottish heritage and a good listener, and she understands that the ‘nonsense’ which Don speaks is fragmented Gaelic, opening up an ocean of revelations and buried family history spanning the Atlantic.
Money… The Game Show is a thrillingly interactive new play that takes a playful and politically sharp look at the roots of the financial crisis and its impact, and asks the big questions: What is money? What is it worth? And what happens if we stop believing in it?
In My Father’s Words is a beautiful play about identity - national and personal - and language, and the utter indivisibility between the two.
Initially developed as part of the Platform 18 Award 2011 at The Arches and Traverse Theatre, and now a co-production between Unlimited Theatre and the world famous Bush Theatre in London.
Set against a sensational sixties soundtrack, arranged and performed by Dave Wildcat Anderson, Uncle Varick is both entertaining and thought provoking.
In the year that the Commonwealth Games comes back to Scotland, the Dundee Rep presents a play which re-tells the Scottish emigrant story for our times.

Indian Peter’s Coffee House is a caffeinefuelled, rip-roaring, swashbuckling story of kidnap, shipwreck, slavery, murder, mayhem and skulduggery. It tells the story of Scotsman Peter Williamson (1720 – 1799) who was kidnapped in Aberdeen, sold as a labourer to a farmer in Pennsylvania and then captured and enslaved by native Americans. Unbelievably, that’s just the beginning of the story. Come along and find out how this incredible man came to open his own coffee house in Edinburgh, run a private post office and invent a submarine for commuting across the Firth of Forth to Fife. 51 Shades of Maggie EMPIRE THEATRE MON 19 & TUE 20 MAY 20.00 SEAT PRICE £20.00 EDEN COURT FRIENDS DISCOUNT APPLIES 16+ contains strong language and themes of an adult nature.
Following sold out tours across the UK, Ireland and Australia – the one-woman smash hit comedy sensation 51 Shades of Maggie returns to Eden Court this May! Audiences loved this hilarious send up of the best-selling novel 50 Shades of Grey last time round and this time we’re certain the reaction will be just as good. The show tells the story of loveable working class Maggie Muff who, despite being let down by the men in her life, is still searching for love. Attending an interview at the Social Security Office Maggie meets the handsome and hunky Mr Big! Will Mr Big turn out to be the man of her dreams, or will his “Private Room of Pain” put her off? Not for the faint-hearted or easily offended, this hilarious new play, full of naughty bits, will have you laughing out loud. Prepare for the funniest, sexiest (and maybe dirtiest) show of 2014.
Direct from a West End season comes this first national tour of Luke Kempner’s tour-de-force impressions comedy, in an extended version featuring exclusive new material. Having made his name with YouTube hit Downstairs At Downton, and appearances in musicals including Les Mis and Avenue Q, Kempner’s debut solo show won critical acclaim and sell-out audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe last year. As celebrities start appearing at the Abbey, cultures clash and eras hilariously collide in this brilliant new parody, which takes in many other popular TV shows and familiar modern voices to help the cast of Downton save the estate from financial ruin – again! He defines the upcoming record, with a wink, as Folk-Prog-Metal. It will have its debut performances in the UK, along with a selection of The Best Of Jethro Tull highlights, all set within a theatrical and multimedia production.

A unique collaboration between legendary Scottish singer-songwriter Rab Noakes and acclaimed Gaelic songstress Kathleen MacInnes as they present an evening of Love and Murder Ballads.
One of the most influential solo guitarists of the last two decades, Preston Reed has captivated audiences the world over with his two handed integrated percussive style and directly influenced many of today’s contemporary acoustic players such as Andy McKee and Kaki King.
Expect stunning performances from both Rab and Kathleen and songs from Scots and Gaelic cultures such as The Two Sisters/ Minorie (A Bhean Iadiach) and An da fheannaig (The Twa’ Corbies) alongside Down in the Willow Garden, Long Black Veil and Valley of Tears. This promises to be a magical evening of entertainment from two consummate artists who may be from different cultures and different generations but who have a passion for music that is undeniable.
Reed fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion that integrates the breathtaking potential of the guitar body. The power and depth of his original and timeless compositions are as unique as the man’s execution, as blues, rock, funk and jazz meet, interlock and attack in a sonic brew that is unlike anything you’ve heard from one solo guitarist before. Preston Reed doesn’t need a band. He is the band.

Irish-born flautist Nuala Kennedy has also blossomed as a vocalist and songwriter in recent years, developing a distinctive blend of folk and pop with artfully adventurous arrangements, showcased most recently on her highly-praised 2012 album Noble Stranger.
Fred Morrison was born and raised near Glasgow, but it’s the celebrated Gaelic piping tradition of his father’s native South Uist that forms the bedrock of Fred’s intensely expressive, uniquely adventurous style. Although his first-love instrument remains the Highland bagpipes, over the years his mastery has expanded to encompass whistles, Scottish smallpipes or reelpipes and Irish uilleann pipes.
Troy MacGillivray is a multiple award-winning virtuoso of the Cape Breton style of fiddling and piano and has performed at festivals around the world. Nuala and Tony first met and played together at the Celtic Colours International Festival over ten years ago, and have developed an intuitive and complementary duo style, which when combined with Nuala’s dynamic band is sure to result in some musical fireworks!
Dubbed the Jimi Hendrix of the pipes, Morrison has performed with seminal Scottish bands Clan Alpa and Capercaillie. Come and see him in the up close and personal atmosphere of our OneTouch Theatre. WWW.FREDMORRISON.COM

Alexandre Bloch – Conductor Sean Shibe – Guitar The Scottish Chamber Orchestra returns to Eden Court with a sparkling concert of energy, enthusiasm and summer warmth under the baton of talented, young French conductor Alexandre Bloch. 24 year old Scottish classical guitarist Sean Shibe – a BBC New Generation Artist – is soloist in Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un gentilhombre. Composed for the guitar virtuoso Andrés Segovia – evidently the nobleman referenced in the title – Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un gentilhombre will transport you to a sundrenched Spain, where the piece takes its inspiration and themes from 17th century folk-dance guitar pieces by Gaspar Sanz. To complete the programme is Mozart’s popular Symphony No 38 Prague, full of animation and radiance.
