WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW YEAR AT EDEN COURT

2012 was a fantastic year at Eden Court.

So, what have we got in store for 2013?

We celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Inverness Film Festival, we hosted a four day residency by the Scottish Ensemble and we laughed our socks off at the first ever Happyness Comedy Festival. There was a host of high quality drama on offer, from the incredibly talented Miriam Margolyes to the brilliantly quirky Allotment, a play that took place on our front lawn and was accompanied by tea and scones (and umbrellas just in case the weather turned bad). We also enjoyed some incredible dance, including performances from the renowned Michael Clark Dance Company and Scottish Ballet’s brilliant new version of A Streetcar Named Desire. On top of all this our CREATIVE department seemed to be involved in absolutely everything. From scaring over 10,000 people at this year’s Ness Islands Halloween event to having more than 100,000 people attend our classes, activities and events throughout the Highlands.

This new guide is packed with a whole host of delights to ensure that your diary is filled until spring. We’re thrilled to be welcoming back two brilliant dance companies, Rambert and Balletboyz. Fans of contemporary dance will not want to miss either of these big hitters! For music lovers, as always, we’ve got a huge programme for you to choose from including two of the biggest jazz acts on the planet, Yellowjackets and Gurtu / Fresu / Sosa. These musicians are in a different class – all I can say is get your tickets quickly, once word gets out that they’re performing here we expect the demand to be huge. In terms of Drama, we’ve got another great season ahead and some of the treats on offer include the hilarious west end hit The 39 Steps, Guy Masterton’s solo Animal Farm and Vox Motus returning with their unique production of Slick. We also have Moray based company Right Lines performing Be Silent or Be Killed - the true story .

of Scottish businessman Roger Hunt who was caught up in the Mumbai hotel terrorist attack in 2008. Our CREATIVE team kick off 2013 in style with A Haggis Lich’ Nicht – which involves giant Haggi (apparently the plural of Haggis) being hunted down and chased throughout the streets of Inverness before being cooked up in a cauldron here at Eden Court. Keep an eye out in the press for more information nearer the time but be sure that this will be the most unique Burn’s Night you will ever have! As ever, there’s just so much on offer to keep everyone entertained over the coming months. Here’s to another great year Colin Marr Eden Court Director

Recently married to his beloved Effie, his addiction to excess finds him in the fateful company of a beguiling gothic fairy. As his love for the strange and beautiful sylph becomes an obsession, he embarks on a fateful journey that takes him from the mean streets and nightclubs of Glasgow into a magical world beyond reality and reason.

A triumph of astonishing illusions TIME OUT

By Nicolai Gogol, translated by Adrian Mitchell, directed by Gerry Mulgrew

'BURNS! (Your Bard, By the Way)' is an original, exciting portrayal of the life of Robert Burns. Two actors play many of the characters who shaped the poet's life and works, moving seamlessly across age, gender and class. Hilarious comedy contrasts with heart-rending tragedy, interwoven with beautiful song.

This is MMA action under the most exciting rule set in the world; bouts can be won by submission or knockout and only the toughest fighters will prevail!

With a dialogue in rhyming Scots, and featuring some of Burns' best-loved poems, including a dramatic recital of Tam o' Shanter, there's plenty here for the Burns enthusiast as well as the newcomer. Bribes, mis-directed contracts, misallocation of public money, fiddled expenses. Panic. Sound familiar? A penniless nobody from the big city arrives in a small town, where he is mistaken for the allpowerful government inspector by its corrupt and self-serving officials. They all have to work together fast to clean up their act – shredding incriminating documents, issuing gagging orders, blacking out the media. The Government Inspector’s hilarious and vicious expose of the corruption of (petty) power pulls off that rare trick of providing belly laughs and food for thought in a single stroke.

Humorous, bawdy, punchy, yet with moments of delicate, tender love. Wonderful tribute to Burns.

An exuberantly funny and inventive show, hilariously powerful and raucous live music.

ANIMAL MAGIC! ... This famous tale is ignited, bringing both humour and a sinister aspect to the rhetoric of the upwardly mobile pigs. THE HERALD A brilliant adaptation which delights with its physical grace and artistry. It's complex and entirely theatrical THE SCOTSMAN

Fourteen years since he last brought his magnificent solo interpretation of Orwell's classic barnyard satire to Inverness, Guy Masterson, last seen in Shylock and Under Milk Wood is back! Using nothing but a wooden box, some amazing sound effects and brilliant physical and vocal dexterity, this performance has to be seen to be believed! Masterson ignites this famous yarn bringing a modern sinister relevance to Orwell's masterwork leaving an indelible imprint in the consciousness. Hilariously comic and powerfully poignant by turns, Masterson's breathtaking storytelling creates the farmyard around you in two hours of utterly compelling theatre. As the most performed solo show in the world, this is a must see performance for all ages. If you've never seen or read Animal Farm, this is the show for you. If you know the story or remember it from school... you won't believe it!

This blissfully funny show follows the incredible adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women. On the day of a crunch Old Firm clash, a fan of each team winds up sharing a jail cell from which their only hope of escape is cash raised by bets on the match to pay their fines. While taking turns to watch the action on a TV visible through their cell door, the pair bicker their way through every entrenched cliché of 'Scotland's shame', from religion to politics and national identity. But aided by their kindly turnkey Harry - whose worries for his sick grandson help put their petty quarrels into perspective - they're forced to reach a grudging understanding. Des Dillon's brilliant satire of 90-minute bigotry in Scotland and its inextricable connection with the nation's two biggest football teams, first scored critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2005, and has since been a near-constant fixture in theatres in Scotland.

Adapted & performed by Rebecca Vaughan Directed by Guy Masterson Thirteen of Jane Austen’s most celebrated female characters are brought to life in this bold revisiting of the most exciting moments from Austen’s ‘two inches of ivory’. In scenes of high comedy and moments of profound pathos, Lizzy Bennet, Emma Woodhouse, Marianne Dashwood and many more, fall in love, alienate their friends and commit notorious improprieties. Using only Austen’s words, Rebecca Vaughan offers a brilliant and illuminating distillation of 19th century feminism.

The best original American play so far this year

Mike Daisey's one-man show The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, starring Grant O'Rourke, is an emboldened, passionate production that will make you question what you thought you knew about one of the world's most worshipped brands. Daisey explores the legality and morality of electronic sweatshops in China, complete with armed guards, underage workers and the harrowing tales of the toxic effects of hexane in these factories. One of the most talked about pieces of theatre to come out of the USA in the last few years, this show has been a hot centre of controversy. After being broadcast and subsequently retracted from the popular radio programme This American Life, this is a tale that has clearly made its way under the skin of audiences and media alike. As a self confessed "worshipper at the church of Apple," playwright Daisey tugs at heart strings, and shows how one man's story might not be able to topple an empire, but it can certainly give it a righteous shove.

On March 16, 2003, Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old American, was killed by an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza Strip as she was trying to prevent the demolition of Palestinian homes. My Name Is Rachel Corrie is a one-woman play composed from Rachel's own journals, letters and emails - creating a portrait of a messy, skinny, articulate, Salvador Dali-loving chain smoker, who left her home in Olympia, Washington, "to support non-violent resistance to Israel's military occupation." Rachel's writings were edited by British actor Alan Rickman and Guardian editor Katherine Viner. This infamous show has attracted a huge audience from its original West End Run and recent UK Tour, and now the IOC is bringing the story to Inverness for the first time this Spring. An evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, Jekyll & Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father's mental illness lies in the separation of Man's evil nature from his good, Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde.

THIS IS A SEMI-STAGED PERFORMANCE Sung in English with English supertitles Timothy Dean Conductor Olivia Fuchs Director Niki Turner Designer Bruno Poet Original Lighting Warren Letton Revival Lighting Jon Driscoll Video Design

Now in its eighth successful year, our ambitious collaboration with Scottish Opera celebrates the 100th anniversary of Benjamin Britten's birth with a revival of Olivia Fuchs' 2005 production for the Royal Opera House: A Midsummer Night's Dream. Adapted from the Shakespeare play in collaboration with Peter Pears, Britten's version is centred on the ethereal world of the fairies rather than the human action at the heart of the original. His extraordinary music brings to life the magic of Shakespeare's characters from the romantic lovers to meddlesome Puck and mighty Oberon, unusually written for countertenor, and even the

sighing, creaking, and rustling of the forest itself. Singers from the Conservatoire's opera programme perform with players from The Orchestra of Scottish Opera. This year, two of Scottish Opera’s Emerging Artists join the cast as part of the range of performance opportunities made available to them throughout the year. Scottish Opera's senior specialist artisans and technicians also work with the Conservatoire's costume makers, set builders and lighting and stage technicians throughout the process of staging this production.

ALEXANDER JANICZEK

In the enviable position of writing most of his music for musicians that he knew well, Haydn peppered his work with wonderful solos - his Sinfonia Concertante is awash in them, offering select principals of the SCO a chance to shine. Janiczek has built a fascinating programme around it, with two short pieces from the 20th century; Strauss' moonlit sextet is as expansive as Webern's Five Pieces are tiny and dense. To close, a grand finale - the second symphony of Haydn's own troublesome pupil. WWW.SCO.ORG.UK

The mesmeric and dynamic Yamato drummers return to the UK with their new show. A thrilling performance of Japanese Taiko drumming, the Company has been touring the world for 20 years, have performed in more than 50 countries and been seen by over 5 million people of all ages who have been left breathless and exhilarated by this high-energy, explosive show.

Three leading lights of Scotland's Fence Collective go on tour...

Yamato play Wadaiko drums that range from the size of a plate to over a metre in diameter, including the Odaiko drum, hewn from one huge tree over four hundred years old. The sheer physical strength and movement of the drummers is as impressive as the music, in this visually spectacular and highly entertaining show.

The sleepy fishing-village of Anstruther, in Scotland's East Neuk of Fife, is home to FENCE RECORDS - a self-proclaimed micro-indie music label with a resolute D.I.Y. work ethic and healthy assortment of musical styles and facial hair. The label's output is reserved exclusively for members of THE FENCE COLLECTIVE - a loose-knit amalgam of singer-songwriters, musicians, bands and electronic artists who collaborate with one another on record, as well as on stage. Although their music isn't always strictly 'folk' in the traditional sense, the Collective's tendency to hand-down and share songs with one another is very much in the folk spirit. Join three members of the Collective, James Yorkston, The Pictish Trail and Seamus Fogarty as they join forces - collaborating on stage, sharing songs, a laugh and a blether.

Jaw dropping talent

THE SCOTSMAN

Yamato's captivating music has both delicate beauty and heart thumping bass power and the drummers' remarkable strength and skill defies belief.

Worbey and Farrell - previously known as Katzenjammer - are internationally acclaimed concert pianists with a wicked sense of humour. Combining musical thrills with a deep love of laughter, they have played with the world's leading symphony orchestras, achieved over half-a-million hits on YouTube, and entertained audiences all over the globe with their barnstorming blend of sparky comedy and utterly sensational piano-playing. Steven Worbey and Kevin Farrell are much more than a traditional piano duet. Their instrument can imitate the tones of a Spanish guitar, resound with the pyrotechnics of Tchaikovsky's 1812, or pulsate with the passions of the masters of jazz. They perform everything from Rachmaninov's 18th Variation to Highland Cathedral, from Carnival of the Animals to Bumble Boogie. Not even Lady Gaga has escaped the Worbey and Farrell treatment This exuberant evening is suitable for every age and all musical tastes. Prepare to be moved, excited and amazed. But above all prepare to laugh with joy at the sheer ingenuity and style of these two masters of musical mayhem.

In 2012 the Legendary Irish Folk group THE DUBLINERS celebrated 50 glorious years in the music business by receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. This was rapidly followed up by a sell-out UK concert tour, the highlight of which was a magical night at The Royal Albert Hall. Sadly, however, they subsequently suffered a body blow with the sudden death of founding member "Banjo" Barney McKenna. Quite naturally this tragic occurrence meant that the remaining members chose to sit down and decide upon the band's future.

SEAN CANNON, EAMONN CAMPBELL, PATSY WATCHORN and banjo virtuoso GERRY O'CONNOR have decided to continue the legacy started by Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Ciaran Bourke, Barney McKenna and John Sheahan back in 1962. As Barney himself said It's Too Late To Stop Now. The Boys are looking forward to entertaining and meeting all their old friends and fans in the UK and Scotland in and will continue to play all the classic songs and ballads known the world over; Whiskey in The Jar, Dirty Old Town, The Wild Rover, Seven Drunken Nights, Finnegan's Wake, Molly Malone, The Irish Rover, Black Velvet Band & many more
