elcome to another packed season at Eden Court.

This brochure takes you all the way from early autumn through to Christmas and the New Year. As always there’s a huge range of events and I hope you have fun choosing the ones that you want to come and see.

It’s hard to choose a few highlights but no Christmas would be complete without a brilliant Eden Court pantomime and this year we have the Mother of all Pantos, Mother Goose (04 DEC – 06 JAN). We have even more Christmas treats – so many that we’ve decided to give them a whole festive section of their own. If you’re looking for something seasonal a ittle earlier, then just after Halloween you can come with us on a journey to the

very edge of terror with The Haunting (12 – 17 NOV). We couldn’t resist the lure of this production which stars David Robb who’s perhaps best known for his role as Dr Clarkson in the award-winning Downton Abbey and James Roach whose recent work includes playing deceptive rogue, James Cunningham in Coronation Street. Eden Court favourites the Scottish Ensemble are not just joining us for one concert but for a full four day residency. We’re all really excited to welcome the Ensemble as they join us for four very different days and evenings of performances. There’s a tea-dance, a spot of scary music at the Ness Islands Halloween spectacular, a film score and, of course, a concert. We can’t wait to see what these hugely talented and versatile musicians have in store. If you find that it’s not an easy task picking from the huge variety of entertainment at Eden Court and that you’d like more of an insight into

what’s on offer each season then you might like to take advantage of our Season Preview event. Just before our season brochures are published we host an informal preview event highlighting a selection of what’s on in the coming season. The preview itself lasts around an hour and afterwards we provide a glass of wine or a coffee. Tickets are effectively free as we charge £5.00 and then at the end of the evening we give you a £5.00 Eden Court voucher. We’ve been holding season preview events for the past few years now and the response has been very positive. The next preview is on 17 December and tickets are on sale now (as it’s a Christmas time season preview we’ll most likely be serving mulled wine and mince pies - Goodness, is it that time already!)

Scottish Ballet presents an extraordinary triple bill tracing a line through dance from the highly physical to the seductively graceful. Fresh from its world premiere as part of the Cultural Olympiad this summer, Martin Lawrance's Run For It is a high energy work inspired by the power of Olympic athletes. Classical discipline meets playfulness in William Forsythe's Workwithinwork, a study of the

possibilities of motion. The dancers create a breathtaking display of fascinating angles and lines, leaving traces of their movements as they go. Drawing the evening to a fiery close is Hans van Manen's Five Tangos. Performed by Scottish Ballet for the first time, this sizzling work combines classical ballet with the passion and dramatic flourishes of the tango.

This classic Scottish novel tells the tale of two brothers gathering cones in a forest on a Scottish estate in order to replenish the trees felled for the war effort. Neil, and his hunchbacked brother Calum, lead happy and contented lives in these beautiful surroundings, completely detached from the destruction of the Second World War. However, their innocence and happiness is threatened by the dark, obsessive hatred of Duror, the gamekeeper and the deep prejudices of the class system of the time. The obsessions of Duror grow stronger throughout the story, building to a devastating climax. Robin Jenkins' greatest novel is brought to life by the creative team behind His Majesty’s Theatre’s two critically acclaimed productions, Sunset Song and The Silver Darlings, in this brand new adaptation by Scottish dramatist Peter Arnott. In the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and following the multi-award winning cinema hits The Kings Speech and W.E., comes an explosive and gripping new stage play telling the behind-thescenes story of Edward Duke of Windsor and his relationship with his ghost writer as they attempt to write his memoir, A King’s Story for one million pounds. Drawn from extensive research, this story of one man’s dilemma between love and money follows LIFE Magazine’s relentless pursuit for a ‘tell all’ best-selling book. But at what cost to Edward and Wallis Simpson

A beautiful piece of multimedia, multiform theatre. ****THE LIST (ON BLACKOUT)

Bob Kingdom is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Dylan Thomas in the Anthony Hopkins’ directorial debut of Dylan Thomas: Return Journey which has been enjoyed to date by over forty thousand people all over the world.

Fourteen years since he last brought his magnificent solo interpretation of Orwell's classic barnyard satire to Inverness, Guy Masterson, last seen in Shylock and Under Milk Wood is back! Using nothing but a wooden box, some amazing sound effects and brilliant physical and vocal dexterity, this performance has to be seen to be believed! Masterson ignites this famous yarn bringing a modern sinister relevance to Orwell's masterwork leaving an indelible imprint in the consciousness. Hilariously comic and powerfully poignant by turns, Masterson's breathtaking storytelling creates the farmyard around you in two hours of utterly compelling theatre. As the most performed solo show in the world, this is a must see performance for all ages. If you've never seen or read Animal Farm, this is the show for you. If you know the story or remember it from school... you won't believe it!

Alison Peebles is a leading Scottish actor who once gave an acclaimed performance as Lady Macbeth and in many others memorable roles. But that’s not the point. Alison Peebles has primary progressive MS which was first diagnosed 12 years ago, after a series of falls as a creeping numbness spread throughout her body. But maybe that’s not the point either. The point is that she is as vulnerable as all of us.

As I struggle inelegantly on my crutches, toddlers who have just discovered the wobbly freedom of their own two feet, whizz past me. People amble, stride, jog and just…walk. It is a gift they don’t know they have, and one I never considered until I began to lose it.

Thomas, Katie and Hanna are beautiful young performers, but it’s not important that they have healthy, flexible, reliable bodies. What’s important is that their minds and their emotions can be as unpredictable as Alison’s body. Celebratory, irreverent and, at times, surreal, My Shrinking Life examines the emotional and physical journey we are all on as vulnerable, fragile people, diagnosed or not WWW.NATIONALTHEATRESCOTLAND.COM

For this larger scale production Mark Pinkosh plays the role of Bradley and two further actors will be joining the company to play alongside him.

FROM GILDED BALLOON & TRON THEATRE COMPANY Written and directed by Morag Fullarton This is a lovingly disrespectful homage to one of the classic films of all time, starring Still Game’s Gavin Mitchell impersonating Humphrey Bogart playing Rick Blaine, alongside Taggart’s Clare Waugh and Para Handy’s Jimmy Chisholm! A 'superb multi-tasking cast' whisk you back to Morocco 1941, a Nazi infested hotbed of corruption, teeming with refugees and all the flotsam and jetsam of war-torn Europe. Cut to Rick's bar where the émigrés gather, desperate to get hold of the all-elusive exit visa, when who should walk in but the beautiful Ilsa, Rick's long lost love. Set in a tiny gin joint, this fast-paced, action-packed comedy is a smart and loving tribute to an all-time classic film. Raise a Bogart-style eyebrow and shed a Bergman-like tear as you revist one of the greatest films ever!

Pure theatre magic, the secret of the show's success lies in its combination of anarchic stage send-up and real passion for the essence of one of the great screen love-stories **** THE SCOTSMAN **** THE HERALD

In a dark, private chamber, a lonely woman begins to craft the perfect man out of the only thing she knows her crutches. A hauntingly beautiful study of love, obsession, loneliness and manipulation, Ménage a Trois is a visually stunning new piece of dance theatre from award-winning performer Claire Cunningham and choreographer/video artist Gail Sneddon. Exploring Claire's twenty year relationship with her crutches, this darkly humorous and deeply personal portrait asks if it's possible to find love when there are already three of you in the relationship.

Ménage a Trois is created in partnership with the National Theatre of Scotland and has been commissioned for Unlimited, a project celebrating disability, arts, culture and sport on an unprecedented scale as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Join Dicky on his mission to pair off a delightful gallery of glorious eccentrics; a lonely cripple from Cork; a sex starved spinster, who doesn't want to die "without the imprint of a man"; a jovial jockey and a pious widow with a toffee (yes, toffee) addiction. Using his unique blend of intuition, cunning and good old Irish Charm, Dicky must somehow match them all up. With heart-warming and hilarious results, this stage adaptation from John B Keane’s original novel is a charming mix of humour and poignancy and a celebration of Irish country people’s pursuit of true love.

Mark has cycled from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, climbed the highest peaks in North and South America and recently he returned from an attempt to break the World Record for rowing across the Atlantic. After 27 days at sea, having rowed over 2000 miles, his boat capsized and he survived with his team for 14 hours in a life raft before being rescued.

In January 2012, almost 100 years to the day after Captain Scott reached the South Pole, Felicity Aston became the first woman in history to ski across Antarctica alone. For 59 days she dragged 85kg of supplies 1744 km across the coldest continent on earth, enduring temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees and storm force winds.

Opening the evening’s performance is a youthful overture from Mendelssohn inspired by the legend of the mermaid Melusine. Leading British soloist Nicholas Daniel gives a rare performance of the beautiful Concerto for oboe and strings which Vaughan Williams composed towards the end of the Second World War, and Andrew Manze brings the evening to a stirring close with Schubert's monumental final symphony.

Following the huge success of The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro, Sir Thomas Allen and Simon Higlett return to take on the fantastical charms of Mozart's most inventive opera. Set in a spectacular visual world inspired by 'steam punk' Victoriana, this promises to be a stylish and imaginative telling of this muchloved piece.

Tamino is shown a painting of a beautiful young maiden and immediately falls in love. She is Pamina, the daughter of the mysterious Queen of the Night, who has been abducted by her mother's arch enemy, Sarastro. Tamino sets out to rescue her with just a magic flute and Papageno, a bumbling bird-catcher looking for love, to help him. But as their quest progresses the men start to question the motives of those around them, and they soon realise that all is not quite as it seems A beguiling mix of comedy, fantasy and pantomime, The Magic Flute is also a profound story of the search for love, wisdom and truth. Mozart's music effortlessly evokes the full gamut of emotions on stage - from heartfelt love songs and comic exchanges to explosive coloratura in the infamous Queen of the Night arias. Scottish tenor Nicky Spence (Intermezzo 2011) sings Tamino, and internationally acclaimed soprano Mari Moriya is the Queen of the Night. Mozart and Magic Flute expert Ekhart Wycik conducts. Sung in English with English supertitles. Supported by Dunard Fund and The Scottish Opera Syndicate. Running time approximately 3 hours.

Johann Strauss's unofficial Austrian national anthem begins a dance through the imagination of Vienna, a city whose relationship with tradition can be both as tender as Webern's tribute to Schubert, and as revolutionary as Beethoven's explosive Fifth Symphony. BACH Goldberg Variations (arr. Sitkovetsky)

Alex's music, lauded by the house and techno communities, is also informed by his early experiences as a boy-chorister at Durham Cathedral. Still drawing on his classical music training gained as a teenager, Alex now tours his sets which blur the boundaries between electronica, classical and hip hop across the globe, including to the prestigious Sonar Festival in Barcelona.

The ancient and simple concept of variations is woven into an epic narrative, where earthly rhythms reach out towards the spiritual dimension.

A talented cellist, Alex's new score exploits the full express range of the string family layered with electronics providing unusual atmospheres and textures.

As well as our energetic and challenging concerts which you love, we’re presenting some more unusual events giving you new ways to experience the Scottish Ensemble, plus we’ll be joining in the fun at the Ness Islands Halloween spectacular. 8 Songs for a Mad King

Baritone: Marcus Farnsworth

TUE 13 NOV 19:30 ONETOUCH THEATRE

Renowned for quality of performance and diversity of repertoire, Hebrides Ensemble have brought many varied programmes to Eden Court over the seasons. This season they return with Peter Maxwell Davies' classic piece of music theatre Eight Songs for a Mad King on Tuesday 13 November.

The work is based on King George III who during his episodes of madness, tried to teach caged birds music, often making awful attempts to sing with them. The instrumentalists play the parts of the caged birds and Marcus Farnsworth, baritone, the role of the King. Madness has been popular in songs and opera for centuries, but usually as something to mock or as a way for the composer to display the musical pyrotechnics of his performers. Eight Songs for a Mad King is full of these bespoke musical pyrotechnics and is an immensely powerful work that considers the seriousness of madness.

This melodically and rhythmically exciting collaboration by three of the world's leading folk musicians was rapturously received on its first British tour in 2010. Sharing their Celtic, Nordic and Appalachian cultures are Aly Bain, Scotland's supreme traditional style fiddler, Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ale Möller, and American old time fiddler, singer, guitarist and banjo player Bruce Molsky. All three have for many years explored traditional music from a wide range of cultures.

Fiddle playing at its best. Duncan Chisholm returns to the Eden Court Empire Theatre this October to present his new album, Affric, the concluding part of his critically acclaimed Strathglass Trilogy. During this tour, Duncan’s audience will be the first to be treated to a carefully crafted collection of tunes, handpicked from The Trilogy – the culmination of six years work. Duncan is delighted to be accompanied on stage by Allan Henderson and Matheu Watson during this tour.

This is the first time that they have found a space in their crowded schedules to tour here together since their first British tour played to packed audiences throughout Britain. Don't miss this musical feast.

When Meschiya Lake & The Little Big Horns flew in from New Orleans for their first UK tour, it was instantly apparent that folks here already knew all about the band's reputation as one of the hottest acts on the American roots music circuit! Playing to sold-out shows everywhere, they’re accompanied by two of the world’s top Lindy Hop exhibition dancers – Chance Bushman and Amy Johnston, who also tour the globe in major events from Brazil to Canada and Scandanavia. Knocking the socks off thousands at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival 2012, they were hailed as One of the big hits of this year’s Celtic Connections by performer and presenter Mary Ann Kennedy. Plus with Meschiya winning Best Female Performer of The Year in the 2011 and 2012 Big Easy Music Awards and the band’s 2011 album Lucky Devil receiving glowing reviews, Meschiya Lake & The Little Big Horns are certainly on a high and are ready to blow you away!

POWERPLAY (ON JOHN WILSON)

What’s so compelling about Lizanne's music is her innate ability to capture little snapshots of life with vivid imagery, understated music and a voice that resonates with passion and soothes the very soul.

From the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi brings to joyous life all forms of song and what sets her apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance. One of the best kept secrets in the UK.

Absolutely gorgeous music. We've rarely had as big a reaction to any artist in recent years as the one we had for Lizanne Knott

Having shot to fame in the 1980s as Fairground Attraction’s front woman with the hit single Perfect, it’s Eddi Reader’s subsequent solo work that’s kept her at the forefront of the music scene.

A long standing member of the Philadelphia music scene, Lizanne Knott has performed at some of the most prestigious listening venues in the US and throughout Europe and is a frequent featured artist on Bob Harris’s This Is Country.

Edward Kennedy Ellington was a unique contributor to 20th century music. Composer, pianist, band leader - he reached out and touched a worldwide audience in a fashion that may never be equalled. His music was evocative and emotional, richly textured in mood, from lyrical simplicity through to dense complexity, there were songs and suites, tone poems and the blues. The Ducal legacy is vast covering six decades. However,

the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, winner of the UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards: Best Jazz Ensemble 2012 and featuring Scotland's leading jazz musicians, have chosen a variety of pieces spanning Ellington's output with which to pay their respects. From Happy Go Lucky Local to the Per Gynt Suite, the interpretations by the SNJO redefine the timelessness of Ellingtonia.
